Announcement Welcome to r/SwitchPirates! FAQ, Guides, and Resources
Why Create This Post?
We often get flooded with many of the same questions. While we love to help new commers, it can be exhausting constantly replying to very similar posts. This post is intended to serve as a resource for the community. The idea is to have the information easily accessible and clear for new commers and people exploring a new app or refreshing their memory. Feel free to comment any additions you would like to add and I will create guides. I don't have much free time between running So-Cal Console Modding and my main career, but I will try to slowly trickle out more guides to help out the community.

Discussion Skate 3 Port For Switch Out Now
Sorry for shit video quality, the port works good with some OC
If there's one thing y'all should know is that it's not a 1/1 XBOX 360 port it's a rewrite, there's no traffic or NPC's, I saw someone else tried to port the XBOX version and it ran like shit so this is pretty good for a Switch version for now.

update of this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/SwitchPirates/s/urfMJq3MZx
finally got some playable gameplay! go some graphics settings in there and at full coverclock and very low graphics it can get high 20s consistently. at the very end i did put it back to high (game default) and you can see the difference. been putting a lot of time recently into it. fixed lots of bugs and have done optimization. this is a debug build by the way so we will see without all the debug stuff enabled if i can get some more frames.

Question Newest Atmosphere/Hekate release & main Switch guide.
I’m seeing multiple posts saying they are following the main Switch guide to a T and still having errors or problems. My question is since the newest release of Atmosphere a few days ago is this guide truly good to go for firmware 23? Are people doing fresh CFW successfully with no hiccups using this guide within the last few days?

Discussion [Release] Exiled Kingdoms native port for Switch homebrew: build it from your own PC copy, full controller support
I've been porting Exiled Kingdoms, the old-school isometric action RPG by FDG Entertainment, to the Switch as a native homebrew NRO. No emulation and no streaming: the PC game's Java code is translated to C++ and compiled for the Switch. No game files are shared. The repo only contains build tools and patches. You build the NRO yourself from your own copy of the PC version (`exiledkingdoms.jar` from Steam). If you don't own it, please buy it; it's a great game and very cheap.
Repo, with a build guide and a long technical write-up: https://github.com/type0labs-dev/exiled-kingdoms-switch

News [Release] PlayGuard 1.2.0 – parental controls right on your modded Switch: notification bell, broken-game checker, new Console tab
Hey everyone,
PlayGuard is a homebrew that puts the Switch's parental controls on the console itself: daily play-time limits, the PIN, restrictions, play activity and the network clock. No phone app, no Nintendo account, no internet needed. It drives the console's own `pctl` service, so nothing runs in the background– close it and the console enforces the rules by itself.
Useful if you set up a modded Switch for your kids, or bought a second-hand one still tied to someone else's Parental Controls app.
https://github.com/JigSawFr/PlayGuard
What's new in 1.2.0
Notification bell. Everything that needs the parent in one place: bedtime alarm off, network clock drifting, settings changed outside PlayGuard, a weak PIN, no recent backup, low SD space, a weekly play-time summary. It also flags newer Atmosphère, hekate and firmware releases (release notes readable in-app) and an outdated recovery sysmodule, which you can update straight from the bell. Tabs get a badge when something needs fixing, and open right on that row.
Installed games checker (Console tab). Finds games that won't start and tells you why – missing update or base game, ticket issue, corrupt data, firmware too old – and how to fix it. Pick several games for one action (check data, remove, remove an update), or send the list to a gist when asking for help.
Cleaner layout. New Console and History tabs, a dedicated PIN tab, each setting next to the feature it affects. Language and theme switch from the header. The PIN, once entered, holds until you close PlayGuard (asked again after 5 min away).
Activity & play timer. All games on their own screen, as covers or a list. Play time over 100 h in whole hours, all-time average over months or years. Tap the week chart to edit several days at once. Extra time now resets by itself the next day.
History logs refused changes too, groups entries by day, and can be filtered and exported.
Plus: one log file per run, PlayGuard's own crashes saved with a backtrace, security fixes around the recovery report, and "Lock and quit" now closes the game PlayGuard runs over.
Full changelog: https://github.com/JigSawFr/PlayGuard/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md
Compatibility
- Tested on a console: FW 22.0.0 → 22.5.0 (Atmosphère 1.11.x) and FW 23.0.1 (Atmosphère 1.12.1)
- Should work, untested: FW 21.x and 23.0.0; on 20.x and older, everything except the play timer
- sysMMC or emuMMC; hbmenu, sphaira or Homebrew App Store
- Newer firmware opens read-only until a release supports it.
CFW required, use at your own risk: PlayGuard talks to the restricted `pctl` service, partly through `*ForDebug` commands.
Install / update
- Extract PlayGuard.zip to SD Card.
- On 1.1.0 already? About › Check for updates updates in place.
- Launch it over a game, with a parent's user. First steps sets the PIN and the daily limit.
Locked out, or a second-hand console with an unknown PIN? https://github.com/JigSawFr/PlayGuard/blob/main/docs/troubleshooting.md#locked-out

Question How do I run FC 27 on a modded Switch without updating the firmware?
I'm a complete beginner when it comes to this, so please bear with me. I'm trying to install and play EA SPORTS FC 27 on my modded Nintendo Switch, but it looks like the game requires a newer firmware than the one I'm currently running.
On PS4, there's something called a backport that allows you to play newer games on older firmware. Is there anything similar on the Switch?
If not, what's the safest way to update my Switch firmware without messing up the modchip or losing my ability to boot into CFW?
I'm currently using a modchipped Switch and would really appreciate a beginner-friendly explanation or YouTube tutorial. I don't want to brick my console trying to get one game working.

Question How or what can I delete in my nintendo files?
So after ten years with my switch and about 7 years of modding it, I have about 388gb of content in my Nintendo file, and I only have 10gb of videos/pics of screenshots. Is there any way of shaving this or deleting files for games that I don't play no more? All the files and content are named with Numbers so I don't know what I am deleting.

Question Idea for a universal anti-aliasing solution on Switch
Hey everyone,
I've had an idea for a homebrew project and wanted to know what you guys think.
Basically, the idea would be to create a sysmodule that adds a light anti-aliasing effect to Switch games. The goal would be to take advantage of the extra GPU headroom gained through overclocking to make games look a bit cleaner, especially those with really noticeable jagged edges.
Ideally, it would work through an overlay. You enable it, launch a game, and the module automatically applies the effect. You could also turn it off whenever you want.
I'm not talking about anything too demanding. Just a lightweight AA solution, something like FXAA, that smooths out the edges without making the image too blurry or hurting performance too much.
I think games like Persona 5 Strikers, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Zelda: Link's Awakening and SMT V could benefit from something like this. Some Switch games look great overall, but the aliasing can be pretty distracting, and a subtle improvement could make them much more enjoyable to look at.
Of course, I know overclocking doesn't give you unlimited performance, and I have no idea how difficult it would be to implement something like this across different games.
So my main questions are: would this even be technically possible? Could a sysmodule inject a post-processing effect into games, or would it require a different approach for each game?
I haven't developed anything yet, so this is just an idea for now. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows more about Switch homebrew, graphics or shader injection.
What do you guys think? Is this worth looking into?

Question Why is it not working? (Using Tico with Duckstation core on my Switch, the text means "Insert Disc 1")
Its stuck on this screen. I patched FF7 bin files and made cue files for them on a website, then I put everything inside tico/roms/psx and it gets stuck on this screen. I've tried pressing + and - and choosing select disc and disc 1, but the image fades to black temporarily and comes back. I've tried turning them into chd files and using an m3u playlist but it still wont work. Does anyone know how to fix this? (By the way I'm not downloading the official FF7 port for Switch because the Spanish translation is REALLY bad)
