[Story Time!] August 1996
August 1996. I was a week away from turning 13. Resident Evil had been out for a few months and I'd only gotten to experience it briefly at a friend's house. I needed to have this game. I needed money and I needed to come up with a plan. My SNES was old news, sure it had some of the best games I ever played in my life until that point, but have you seen Resident Evil?!? This was the mid 90s, there was no eBay, no Facebook Marketplace. You had a BMX bike and time. The classified section was my only hope so I hopped on my Mongoose Menace, pedaled the 10 mile round trip to my local newspaper and put an ad in:
"SUPER NINTENDO 2 Controllers, 4 games, excellent, $150-offer."
For the next couple weeks I waited for the phone to ring and one afternoon it finally did. An older guy called and said he wanted it for his grandson. I gave him the address and about 45 minutes later I heard a knock. I jumped up and answered the door. Now I can't remember the price we settled on but I know it was way less than what I asked for and more than I needed to buy Resident Evil. He gave me the cash, I gave him the SNES and slammed the door. It was go time. I ran out the back door grabbed my Mongoose and rode a mile to KMart.
The glass display cases were like heaven on earth, so many fresh new games. But the only one that mattered was Resident Evil. The cashier didn't give me any problems and let me buy it without an adult (appreciate it homie). Got back on my bike and reached Mach 5 on my way home.
The whole summer I had been sleeping in the basement because we didn't have AC. This was the perfect setup to play my own copy of RE1 for the first time. It was dark, dank and quiet. I was home alone and when I pressed that power button to see what looked like Chris getting slaughtered and the title screen fall over his eye with a loud 'THUNK' I almost turned it off and went upstairs. But I couldn't after all the time and effort I put in. I had to play it. I pressed the any button and the rest is history.
A few months ago I was looking through newspaper archives and found the ad I had worked so hard to place. It's been 30 years but it feels like it just happened yesterday. I've been gaming since the 80s and as much as I love playing them the random memories I have that involve them are just as good.

[Discussion] What is the 3 best games of all time that you have played?
For me, it's the Super Mario 64, Super Metroid, and Luigi's Mansion 2. Not only the graphics are awesome, but the gameplay are amazing also. What are your choices?

[Discussion] What is the hardest game you’ve ever beaten?
The hardest game I’ve ever beaten has to be Aladdin on Genesis. Admittedly there’s very few retro games I can beat, at least not legitimately. But I loved Aladdin so much on unblocked emulator sites growing up that i was determined to beat it. Fuck the cave of wonders. Now that I’ve bought a Genesis and cartridge I’ve beaten the game on the og hardware too. What is the hardest game you’ve ever beaten?

[Discussion] What was your first disc-based video game system? Any regrets about the ones you bought or skipped/missed?
My first disc-based video game system was PlayStation (Sony, 1995), actually my Sega Genesis (Sega, 1989) life was not long, soon after I sold my Sega Genesis (Sega, 1989), to get money for helping buy my PlayStation (Sony, 1995).
I regreted that I missed buying a PC-Engine CD-ROM² (NEC, 1988) and a Sega Saturn (Sega, 1994).
And at the same time I didn't regret that I skipped buying a PC-Engine CD-ROM² (NEC, 1988), because right before I moved to North America in early 1990s, my PC-Engine (NEC, 1987) got stolen... 😢
----------------
The listed disc-based video game system:
PC-Engine CD-ROM² (NEC, 1988)
Turbo Duo (NEC, 1992)
Commodore CDTV (Commodore, 1991)
Philips CD-i (Philips, 1991)
Sega CD (Sega, 1992)
LaserActive (Pioneer, 1993)
FM Towns Marty (Fujitsu, 1993)
Amiga CD32 (Commodore, 1993)
3DO Interactive Multiplayer (Panasonic, 1993)
Tower of Power (Sega, 1994)
Neo Geo CD (SNK, 1994/1996)
PC-FX (NEC, 1994)
Sega Saturn (Sega, 1994)
PlayStation (Sony, 1995)
Jaguar CD (Atari, 1995)
Dreamcast (Sega, 1999)
----------------
skipped 6th gen systems because of rules... 😅

[Story Time!] Funny how a little piece of the past can take you right back
I've always had a soft spot for old games like Super Mario World, Sonic the Hedgehog, Chrono Trigger, and the old Pokémon games.
Last week, my girlfriend got me a retro mini PC for my birthday. When I opened it and saw the design, it took me right back to my childhood.
I used to come home from school, play little games while my mom made dinner, and wait for my dad to get home from work. Life felt pretty simple back then, and I guess I didn't realize how happy those ordinary days were until they were gone.
Things have changed a lot since then, and my family isn't what it used to be. But those old games have always stayed with me, and I know the acemagic retro x5 is a modern minipc, and its retro look is probably just part of the design. Still, having it on my desk brings back that same warm feeling. It's strange how something so small can remind you of a time when you had no idea how much you would miss being a kid.
I'm really grateful to my girlfriend. She knew I'd like the retro look, but I don't think she realized just how much it would mean to me.
Anyone else have an old game that takes you straight back to your childhood?

[Question] What retro games help you with burnout?
A newer one for me is Stardew Valley. I guess the whole idea of peacing-out of corpo hell to go farm in a beautiful place is just...a nice way to detach? Identify with? Unsure how to say.
What retro games help you like this, if that makes sense? NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PSX, PS2...i guess PS3 counts as retro now too...

[Discussion] I have a fascination with punishing arcade games
Lately I was fondly recalling a particular arcade game that I used to play called Rolling Thunder as I was looking back at how the damage system was handled since what I found most interesting was how the health bar was incorrectly designed as players can only get hit from enemies 2 time.
Like what I am saying is that I kind of miss that style of design where an arcade game could have peculiar design aspects to it while still being able to sell with fun gameplay design that I could go for another punishing platformer type game.

[Discussion] If you were in charge of picking the NES classic roster, and licensing wasn’t an issue, what 30 games would you have chosen?
I love retro games and these consoles that sell tiny versions of them pre packaged with games. Collecting can take time, so if you buy NES to actually play the games, I recommend classic consoles. The NES Classic has its issues though. The controller chords were insanely short and it felt like some staple titles were missing. So if you were in charge, and licensing wasn’t an issue, which 30 games would you package with it?

[Recommendation] VolleyFlux: steer the ball with your shots, 150 neon pitches - inspired by the 1989 Amiga/DOS game Ballistix
I'm the developer of VolleyFlux, an arcade game for Android.
You don't touch the ball. You fly a small ship that aims at the ball by itself, and every shot you fire knocks it a little. Your shots are how you steer it into the goal, while the CPU does the same from the other end. First to 3 wins the pitch.
- VS CPU: 150 pitches in sectors of 10. Win to advance; the CPU gets sharper as you go, and the last 50 pitches are the hardest.
- Arcade:50 pitches where gravity pulls the ball toward your own goal.
- Pitches mix currents, bumpers, vortexes and walls, plus bonuses like SHIELD, SLOW and STOP.
- Touch (drag anywhere + FIRE), optional gyro aiming, or a gamepad.
- Free to try: VS pitches 1–10 and Arcade 1–7. One purchase unlocks the rest: 1.99$. No ads.
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bennybar.volleyflux
It's inspired by the 1989 Amiga/DOS game Ballistix, but it's an unofficial, all-new game. Happy to answer questions.

[Question] PS controller “square” button misfiring. Help?
I tried opening it up and cleaning the first time I noticed this (alcohol on a q-tip), but after I put it back together, it’s misfiring even more!
The funny thing is, it’s not a regular misfire: seems random. Not sure what else to do.
Misfiring = button is activating without being pushed.
Thank you in advance.

[Discussion] Favorite "helicopter-cam" racing games?
I've been lurking for a while and had a question I wanted to toss out here. I'm a fan of classic racing games that use a raised camera -- like the single screen god's eye view of super sprint, or the raised external follow cams of games like Rock n Roll Racing and RC Pro-AM. This is in contrast to games that use follow cams like Outrun and Burnout, or hood cams like Ridge Racer.
It was only earlier this year that I learned that somehow I missed the existence of Skidmarks, so I wanted to see if there are other gems out there I wasn't aware of.
What are y'all's favorite racing games that do not use a chase camera, 1st person, or hood cam? Bonus points if it has local multiplayer!

[Other] Looking for information/leads on the uncensored Beta build of Medal of Honor (PS1 - 1999)
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to track down any information, leads, or potential disc dumps regarding the uncensored pre-release build of the original Medal of Honor (1999) for the PlayStation 1.
As some of you might know, the game was originally developed to be much more visceral and violent, heavily inspired by "Saving Private Ryan". Early promotional footage—most notably the preview trailer included on the DreamWorks Interactive T'AI FU promo/demo disc from early 1999—clearly shows distinct gore elements, such as explicit blood splatters on walls and soldiers losing limbs/stumbling from grenade explosions.
Following the Columbine High School massacre in April 1999, the developers had to frantically scrub the code, removing all gibbing, gore animations, and wall blood splatters just months before the October release to secure a Teen rating.
Given that gaming magazines and press outlets were receiving preview and review builds around March/April 1999, it is highly likely that physical preview discs containing this violent build exist out there in private collections.
Has any build from this specific timeframe (Q1/early Q2 1999) ever been documented, dumped, or spotted in the wild? Any information or discussion on this specific "lost media" piece of Medal of Honor history would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
