Spotted in the wild Visited the Northwest Computer Museum in Leigh, UK

This was an amazing experience. As a 22 year old I unfortunately never got to experience any of these computers and consoles so it was honestly mind blowing for me. I'd never played an N64, original NES, Dreamcast, Master System or Mega Drive and it was so fun to try them out. And the huge cabinets full of classic games were all available to take out and play!

As a lover of CRTs it was also exciting to see so many different sets in person, though they did kind of start to give me a bit of a headache after a while from the flickering haha. The TV that was hooked up to the Dreamcast was unbelievable though, it looked so crisp and the colours popped so nicely!

Some classic highlights:

- 3D Monster Maze

- Elite

- Rogue

- SimCity

- Goldeneye 007

- Super Mario Bros 1 and 3, and Duck Hunt

- Banjo Kazooie

- Sonic The Hedgehog 2

There were lots of other sections too, a room full of BBC Micros for learning coding, a room with Arduinos and 3D printers, an area of PCs all connected for multiplayer DOOM sessions. There were original arcade cabinets, shelves of cassette recorders and Sony and Aiwa Walkmans. An amazing place that was a joy to visit.

[Story Time!] The late, great TRS80 Model III

Post image
40 Upvotes

This is where it all started for me, on the Radio Shack TRS80 Model III. This is the computer that led me to a life of nerdery. I absolutely fell in love from the second I sat down. That powder blue phone next to me was soon sending 300 bits per second screaming across the 216 area code to connect to local BBSs downloading the anarchist's cookbook. I was inspired by a pic I just saw of someone on their Commodore 64, and I think that computer probably is my holy grail, but this is my earliest show and one that really sums me up, through and through. If this shot moves you, we are probably very close to being good friends.

[Fun] Obscure PS1 stuff

So I’ll try not to put myself too much but worked at a cash converters in the uk and gentleman tells me he has a load of ps1 stuff he would like to sell, dev kits and whatnot. Tell him it’s far too niche for the store but I have an interest. Turns out he was a Sony executive back in the day, has a whole room of old consoles sealed stuff and dev kits, gold discs and merch. End up selling most of it off to a collector but find these just hanging around the house.
The pin badge is polygonman, who was due to be the mascot for the ps1 when it launched but the Japanese execs cancelled the whole thing on the day of the conference and this stuff had to be destroyed.
Just fun bit of history :)

[Fun] I'm playing Alundra

First off, it's frikin awesome! I really recommend it for anybody that is a big fan of Zelda games. It's a bit darker than Zelda and the puzzles are a bit more cryptic, but it's really good. Also, I think that the five blessings that the Saints in this tomb are referring to are just the five zombies I've killed so far. Lol I was expecting maybe a more classic Definition of blessings there, guys. 😆

Edit: this cryptic-assed crypt can suck dog eggs. Why am I so bad at riddles!! 🥹

[Collection] I thought I'd sold my N64 years ago... turns out I still have it! 😅

Post image

I was going through some old stuff and came across my Nintendo 64 and all these games and controllers!

The funny thing is, I was convinced I'd sold it years ago! I'd completely forgotten I still had it.

Seeing all this again brought back so many memories, especially Zelda, GoldenEye and Bad Fur Day. Now I really want to plug it in and play again.

Only problem is, I don't have a TV that can connect to it anymore, so it looks like I'll have to spend a little money before I can enjoy it again 😅

Any advice on what kind of tv would be the best?

[Discussion] What games had the longest loading times back in the day?

Something that just stuck out to me was how games used to take forever to load as don't get me wrong in that having modern games load so quick is really nice, but I wanted to get a better understanding of why some PC games in the 8 bit days of gaming took so long to load.

To me, this stuff is fascinating to learn about because I sometimes heard stories about how users back in the day would complain that their games would take forever to load as what I noticed is that games could sometimes take at least 3 minutes to get past the loading screen, so again I wanted to better understand how the process was done in the 8 bit era of gaming.

[GIF Post] An interesting trick for this Nintendo 8-bit Famicom cute and sweet puzzle game, Binary Land (Hudson, 1985, FC).

You control two loving penguins with the mirror movement to reach and unlock the locked heart, while shooting the enemies like spiders. This gameplay is quite unique back in the 80s. And, you can hear to Beethoven's “Ode to Joy” upon unlocking the heart.

The trick: get both penguins to cross each other 16 times in 1-3 second intervals to give birth to a baby penguin.

[Discussion] A lot of us still play RPGs in this community, right?

I made a post asking what fangames you all like, mostly talking about 90s rpgs. Almost everything that everyone replied with was for an action game from an 80s console where the story feels more like an afterthought.

[Discussion] Fifth gen 3D still looks good.

Post image
• Upvotes

(Well, yes i am using it from HD emulator. It was just easier to get a screenshot. Using HD version of fifth gen graphics does not change the design and art direction, though sloppy framerates and resolution does diminish the visuals though).

Is this topic done to death? IDK... but perhaps you heard some thoughts that early 3D graphics look ugly or outdated. Well, technically maybe they are, but this mentality ignores the design and artistry behind the early 3D graphics of gaming. Even if we take the silly faces of Goldeneye, (many would find them charming) there is nothing wrong with the visuals from the environment aspect. Heck looking from far away the models look fine and are less noticeable on OG hardware.

: Cartoony games are of course better than fine.

: Many pre-rendered background from Saturn and PS1 are still amazing.

: CRT filters tend to hide imperfections.

: There is of course sound and music that really help with the appeal from early 3D gaming.

: Compared to modern graphics, retro 3D tends to be more visually easier to understand.

: Plenty indie inspired games recreate these types of graphics; plus, newer instalments of franchises have skins or nods to old models. (This is quite the indicator that these models still have appeal beyond nostalgia).

: Sometimes i prefer the visuals from modern sequels, but that has to do with design not the high fidelity.

And sure, some old do look bad but that's a case-by-case basis. But anyway... any thoughts on this?

[Question] What should I do with my retro games? Sell or keep?

I have so many retro games and consoles. I have a sega genesis (that still works!), n64, Dreamcast, GameCube, and more. All of these systems and most of the games are in decent condition. I even have the box to some of the games. I had someone offer my money for Sonic adventure 2 game for Dreamcast, I even have the manual for it but the case is cracked. I was tempted but I don’t think I’m ready to let go yet. That’s one of my favorite games and was definitely my favorite when I was little. I have all these games and I know I could get some money for them but I feel like I just can’t part with them. They bring back memories of just hanging with the few friends I did have back then and when I got bullied a lot as I got older I was able to escape with my games. For those who have sold your retro games how did you feel? Am I just being too emotional and holding on to memories?

To me, video game body horror should have at least some human (or human-like) body parts... Everybody has different taste; here is just a short list (couldn't upload more than 20 images) that has once impressed me.

And I avoided mentioning next/5th gen video game titles in the above image list...

[Discussion] Anyone else keep a log of games that you've finished? What 90s games have you finished this year?

Sure would be nice to have a pleasant discussion about keeping a log of games.

If you're planning to respond only to complain about someone that is or isn't on this, and only for that reason, I'd rather that you leave me alone.

I keep an entertainment journal, and a log of all of the entertainment that I finish, it's great with my bad memory!

IF you keep a log, what 90s games have you finished this year?

Myst (Great 1993 First Person Point And Click Adventure Game, PC)

Bleed 2 (Great 90s style side scrolling shooter/action platformer Game)

Steel Empire (Good Genesis shoot em up Game)

Contra 3: The Alien Wars (God-Tier Side scrolling Action Platformer Game, SNES

Super Castlevania 4 (God-Tier Side scrolling Action Platformer Game, SNES)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (God-Tier Pure Fun Beat Em Up Game, SNES)

Gojira: Kaijuu Daikessen(Good SNES Fighter Game)

Chuck Rock(Good 1992 Genesis Platformer Game that makes me think of SMB2USA)

Ape Escape (Good Kids Action Platformer Game, PS1)

Virtual Bart Genesis (Bad, but interesting liscensed action platformer Game)

The Adventures of Batman & Robin Genesus (Bad, but interesting liscensed Contra-like platformer Game, Genesis)

Super Luigi Land 2 (Good SMW Fangame, Platformer, SNES)

DKC x Mario (Great Platformer Game, SNES)

1941: Counter Attack(Good 1990 Shoot em up Game, Arcade)

[Achievement Unlocked!] Gaming on a 486 Toshiba T1950CT

Thumbnail
gallery
300 Upvotes

I took this broken Toshiba T1950CT 486 laptop and managed to give it a new life. I did a full teardown, recapped the internal power board, and fixed the floppy drive belt. Working on a 33 year old laptop and putting it back together without breaking anything was an experience. There were times I felt like giving up, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

I was lucky to find an updated Toshiba 3.0 PCMCIA driver set that could format and mount a CF card. Loading a 256 MB card into the PCMCIA slot adapter was a big QoL improvement on this device. It makes storing and managing files from a modern PC way easier since it can be mounted as a letter drive.

[Just a Thought] Just went to street fighter the movie, and will like to ask...

It was a good movie and it did stay close to the game, I do not want to rec it for any one, but a lot of the moves in the game is in the movie. I have to ask do you think adding anime into a live action movie is good? They might have did it to give it a more video game Street Fighter feel, what do you all think?

[Story Time!] [Story Time!] Checked out a new store today..

So, I live in NC and my husband is a big SNES fan. He already had a huge retro collection when we got together but we are always looking to check out new stores.

I was at a training for work this week and remembered there was a GameStop in the area I was. Well, actually, there used to be one. It's now a privately owned game store. I was super pumped to check it out. Unfortunately, it was not open the day I discovered it.

So, today I went by after work and it was open! Hurrah! So excited, I forgot my phone in the car. Well, I'm walking around and I see a variety of games for systems. From XboxOne, PS5, Atari and NES. Sweet! 🥳

Well, not so sweet. I started looking at the SNES (remember, hubby is a huge fan) and see a few games I'd never heard of. Picked up a Metroid game because that's a favorite in my household. But wait, the label is weird. Total repro label if it's real. Nintendo seal of approval is copper, not shiny... Hmm... I swear, about 6 games I picked up, all the labels were like this. I finally found a real label and bring both to the worker.

This lady was just a worker.. but she knew nothing. I was flabbergasted, but I taught her about the seal and showed her the difference. She thanked me. I told her that the one with the fake label can even be a fake game (foreshadowing) and would change the price on it.

Well, since I didn't have my phone, I looked it up when I went back to my car... Hey, Metroid Turbo doesn't exist. 🙄

Anyways, my husband laughed when I told him all this. He said, "Yeah, we are never buying anything from there... Don't ever buy me anything from there..."

There were other red flags but they didn't pertain to this thread so I left 'em out.
