Hi everyone, hope you all are doing well. Apologies for long post tho geniunely seeking advice on what just happened.
I’m posting this anonymously because I just need a safe space to vent, process a completely unhinged weekend, and honestly try to understand a phenomenon I keep running into: why do highly successful, elite-educated men often turn out to be completely bankrupt when it comes to basic emotional intelligence and accountability?
For context, I recently matched with a guy. On paper, he is the ultimate "catch": 34 years old, Wharton graduate, and an AVP at Multinational Financial services firm. We chatted for a couple of days, and things escalated rapidly. He was talking about going "all in," wanting a serious, long-term life partner, and getting married, he even suggested we delete our dating apps together and at least I did delete in front on him while on date.
I’ll admit, I got swept up in the momentum. But a weekend reality check completely shattered the illusion, and I want to lay out what happened to see if anyone else has experienced this brand of toxicity.
The Red Flags Hidden Behind the Resume - We planned a weekend hangout at his place. I showed up with an open heart, genuine care, snacks, and even toys for his cats. But the moment I entered his space, his true nature came out:
Severe Rigidity & OCD: The man operates on an unbendable, robotic script (he literally eats the exact same breakfast every day, mops floors and clean at least 3times daily, shower 3-times, makes bed even after its made by the maid). The second his routine or schedule is slightly disrupted, he completely short-circuits and shuts down.
Intimacy MisMatch: He really wasn't that well to do in terms of intimacy and post act he threw bomb new that he suffers from asthma hence he keeps himself within house limits and hardly goes out. In my mind I went like OCD, Asthma and 2cats this doesn't seem right.
The "Inconvenient Partner" Treatment: During our time together, a family situation arose regarding his family member with some stressful outside harassment. While I completely understood that family comes first and gave him grace, his handling of me was appalling. I was treated like an inconvenient roommate or an afterthought expected to quietly fade into the background.
Zero Basic Decency: If two people are getting intimate, I feel it's basic for a man to treat the women to bare minimum even if the situation mentioned above comes along, when I finally left his house, he couldn’t even be bothered to give me a goodbye hug or walk me down to my cab even after I asked.
The Gaslighting Masterclass : When I got home, I tried to handle things like a mature adult. I called him out of genuine care to check on him, and his immediate, aggressive response was: "Why are you calling me, am I a small child?!"
Realizing we were mismatched, I sent a calm, well-articulated message. I acknowledged his family stress, but firmly pointed out that his lack of basic courtesy (like no goodbye hug, a dismissive tone, and zero emotional availability) made it impossible to build a real connection.
His reaction wasn't accountability—it was explosive gaslighting:
He claimed I was "the least empathetic person he’s ever met" because I dared to ask for basic respect while he was stressed. He said I had terrible timing and that I was never a priority anyway. He declared that his definition of "going all in" and mine were completely different, hiding behind his severe OCD and rigid routines as a permanent shield.
Ultimately, he blocked/deleted me and threw a tantrum because a woman dared to hold up a mirror to his poor behavior.
My Question to Reddit: Why Do They Do This?
I’m writing this because I’m so exhausted. It feels like an endless cycle of trusting men who talk a massive game about commitment, marriage, and "going all in," but the second real-life friction appears, they reveal themselves to be emotionally stunted, self-absorbed, and incapable of a reciprocal relationship.
He hides behind his Wharton degree, his job title, his cats, and his complex OCD as an excuse to demand a compliant, invisible robot, not an actual partner.
Why do men with elite credentials and high-flying corporate titles so frequently lack the basic human decency to say goodbye, offer a shred of warmth, or treat another person with respect? How do you stop entertaining men who use fancy titles to mask a total emotional void?
Would love to hear your thoughts or similar stories because my head is still spinning.
