ModPost New rule: categorically nonbinary is trans

2.6k Upvotes

“We no longer allow discussions, debates, arguments etc over whether nonbinary is trans. It is. This does not mean any specific nonbinary person is obligated to identify as trans. Please respect this rule and refrain from any arguments about it.” — is the text of the rule.

This now nonnegotiable in this subreddit. This is a fact that has been known about nonbinaryness since it was coined. Nonbinary was never not categorically trans. Please respect this rule—if you have issues being referred to as trans, you are completely free as an individual person not to use that word! A subreddit can’t make you call yourself trans if you don’t want to.

But please respect that we have to now make this rule explicitly clear because lately multiple discussions have caused back and forth arguments because, despite being told you can opt out of personal trans identity, a handful of people (usually with no or very little other usage of this subreddit) have come in here to argue about it.

I want to leave comments here open but also I don’t know what other words I can say to indicate this isn’t up for debate. The rule is set. It’s not going to change. Trying to argue it is a waste of your time and the mod team’s.

Not every subreddit will be a perfect fit! If you can’t respect this rule please use another subreddit. Or even start one. I know people act like I’m being a jerk when I suggest that but I don’t know why. If someone wants to make a subreddit without this rule, you could even advertise it here in the comments. This rule is specifically about the culture of this subreddit and is not trying to control the entirety of nonbinary identity.

ModPost A pause on allowing research/study posts.

Unfortunately we have to pause approving research/call for participants/studies posts. They are by far the majority of modmail we receive and to appropriately vet the research/researchers is simply beyond what this volunteer mod team can handle right now. We are hoping to build the mod team at some point and may allow them again.

This has been exacerbated by people ignoring our rule that the study must be specifically about nonbinary people. Some researchers have been rather pushy about it and I’m not going to lie and say that hasn’t influenced this decision as well.

Hello Lovelies! I'm Charli... Finally!

I usually stick to the shadows and never share, but today, I finally worked up a little courage to say hi. It took a lot for me to get here, but I'm taking my shirt's advice to heart! Every day, learning to believe in myself a little more.

Thank you all for being such an inspiration! 💜

I also did some cat-like makeup for the fun of it. I personally like makeup more in the sense of painting my face than using it “correctly” lol.

Should I use They pronouns when being agender or could you keep your old ones?

Hi I feel agender‘ish I don’t label my self as agender but it’s a term that closest fit to my gender identity. I have been thinking about the pronoun (they) a bit. I mean I would like to express my identity a bit more and theoretically would like to use the pronoun (they). But for my mom and many others this would be very hard and I don’t want to make their lives harder because they already care for me a lot. It‘s not that like I dislike it if I am called he/him. But I feel a certain dissconnetion to it. I some case I totally didn’t understand that people were talking about me because my brain was like thinking. “they are talking a he/him I wounder who that may be because it’s definitely not me„

Hi to Enbys who are in the same or similar situation like me. I would like to encourage and support people who are going through hardships as a individual living in a unsupportive or toxic atmosphere. I would like tell you that you can express yourself in many forms (as for myself i do it through writing and drawing and sharing it to communities like this.

What are some creative ways do you all express yourself in this community?

Ask Gender at work

I just got a new job and I just go along with she/her because I don't know how people feel about other pronouns and I just don't want issues in general. I've dealt with a lot of harassment in my everyday life and I just didn't want it at work. I've been wearing dresses and stuff that I absolutely NEVER EVER would wear in my regular life. Mainly it's because I can't find the right clothes that make me feel comfortable. I have other body image issues especially with my legs and can't find pants that make me feel okay. I usually wear sweatpants but now that I have a job I need regular clothes....so unfortunately dresses it is. But what if I make friends?? I want them to know who I am and like who I am and I feel like I'm being someone else right now.

Ask About to start T, having serious doubts

I have been out as nonbinary for about 5 years now have been considering whether I want to start T or not for around 3. I recently decided that I wanted to start low dose testosterone since the effects take longer to set in and it'd be easier for me to stop once I felt like I was happy with the changes I got or if I ended up deciding that it wasn't for me. However, I have been stressed about all of this, and I'm starting to wonder whether this is just pre-hrt anxiety, if I don't want to go on T, or if I'm a cis woman in denial.

The main reason that I wanted to start T in the first place is because I wanted my voice to be a bit more ambiguous, as I have tried voice training and it hasn't worked well for me. I am fairly certain that I would be fine with most of the other effects of T if I did decide to go on it, since I don't feel too strongly about them. However, as of recently I have been really anxious about all of this, and while I know that anxiety can be normal when it comes to this sort of thing, I feel like the level of anxiety I'm experiencing and my thoughts about all of this aren't very "standard" for someone who actually wants to start HRT, and now I'm starting to question myself.

As of recently, I feel like I've been "mourning" my pre-T self even though I haven't even started HRT yet. I'm worried that maybe this all sounds better in theory and that I don't actually want any of these changes, or that I'm only doing this to "prove" my gender to other people. I also noticed that I've gotten a bit more comfortable with my voice as of late, and that sometimes I really like it, which pretty much defeats the purpose of going on testosterone for me. It doesn't help that I also enjoy singing, and I really like how my singing voice sounds as of right now. Another thing that I feel like is kind of weird is that I've been getting really jealous of women for some reason as of late. Part of me thinks that maybe I felt like I wasn't "feminine enough" to be a woman because I had always been considered "less feminine" or "uglier" than my peers growing up, and that maybe I don't feel like I'm "worthy" of calling myself a woman (although based off of other factors I don't think that this is why I don't relate to womanhood or feel like I'm not a woman). I also think that it might be because I'm mourning what I could have been and how much easier certain parts of my life would have been for me as a cisgender woman.

However, I feel like it's also worth mentioning that I did try to detransition for about a month, but it made me extremely uncomfortable, and I decided that I couldn't live my life as a woman and be happy at the same time. I also remember crying to myself as a child because I knew that I didn't quite feel like a girl or a boy, but I wasn't really sure what to make of that at the time because I didn't know what being nonbinary was. I still feel my stomach drop any time I get misgendered (which happens quite often due to my presentation and also the fact that I live with my family) and I am genuinely repulsed by my deadname. I also do find myself getting voice envy(?) from people with androgynous voices, and sometimes I wonder what it would be like for me to live with a less traditionally feminine voice.

I'm genuinely so confused as to what's going on, and I wish that I had given myself a bit more time to think about this. Unfortunately, I already went through the whole process of getting on HRT and I currently have 3 months worth of injection supplies and hormones in my closet, so I can't really give myself that much more time to think about this.

If anyone has any insight then I'd really appreciate it, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask them.

Thank you

How should one deal with this situation?

Hello, good evening, everyone ☺️! I’m looking for some advice on how to handle a situation I’m currently going through.

A little over a month ago, I came out as non-binary to my family and some colleagues. I also explained that I generally feel most comfortable using feminine pronouns (she/her).

Since then, I’ve noticed that the colleagues I told—as well as other family members—have been making an effort to use the pronouns I’m comfortable with, and even the name I’ve chosen (which I plan to adopt officially once I’m able to update my legal documents).

However, I’m facing a difficult situation with my mother, who continues to refer to me using masculine terms. She says she’s unable to adapt and believes she might need psychological support to learn how to cope with this change.

This stirs up conflicting feelings in me. On one hand, it bothers me that she doesn’t use the pronouns and name I identify with. On the other, I feel frustrated because I don’t see the same level of effort from her that I see from other people close to me. At the same time, I feel guilty for wanting her to adapt quickly—as if I might be asking too much of her.

I know that everyone needs their own time to process change, but I also want to feel respected within my own home.

How would you handle this situation? How can I talk to my mother about this—expressing my own needs without feeling guilty, while still acknowledging the difficulties she says she’s experiencing?

P.S. I’m not sure if this is relevant, but what makes my distress and the crises I have with my mother constant is the fact that I still live with her.
