I left my MacBook Pro M2 plugged in for 4 days straight, and now the battery lasts less than 5 minutes.

I have a MacBook Pro M2 with the Touch Bar and a battery cycle count of 784.

Recently, I left it plugged into the charger and running continuously for 4 straight days without shutting it down. Before this, the battery would last around 6-8 hours. But after those 4 days of constant usage, the battery barely lasts 5 minutes before dying.

I always thought using a MacBook while plugged in was perfectly fine because macOS is smart enough to manage the battery, hold charging when necessary, and power the Mac directly from the charger when the battery doesn't need charging.

Now I'm wondering whether keeping it connected to power for extended periods contributed to the battery dying. This isn't even the first time I've experienced battery problems after using a MacBook constantly while plugged in. Honestly, I think Apple should make MacBook batteries removable.

My questions are:
Can leaving a MacBook plugged in and running continuously for days actually damage the battery?

Isn't macOS supposed to manage charging and prevent battery damage when the MacBook stays connected to power?

I'm trying to understand what actually happened because I genuinely believed using a MacBook on the charger was safe, even for extended periods.

What MacBook hacks did you actually try and keep using?

I keep seeing “10 Mac tips you NEED” lists, but half of them are things people try once and forget.

So I’m curious: what’s a tip, setting, shortcut or app you started using and are still using months later?

It could be a hidden setting, a keyboard shortcut you now can’t live without, a free app that fixed an annoyance, or a Terminal tweak that’s actually worth it.

Bonus points if you say what it replaced or why it stuck.

I’ll go first:

  1. “Cmd + Space for everything instead of the Dock”
  2. Calendar widget (I prefer Notion) to see all events
  3. RebelGoose that runs on my desktop, absolutely useless and aggressive but needed

charging port

• Upvotes

i have a macbook air 2019/2020 i don’t remember. i will hopefully be going back to school in may 2027, so i’ll either need a new one or i’m wondering if it’s worth fixing the one i have rn. the charger i have is fine, but the ports (both of them) when i plug it in it keeps going from charging to not charging and i have to turn it off a few times for that to stop (which is already a bad sign lol). i obviously need my computer and i don’t want to make it worse and completely fry the thing. i also have an attachment to this laptop bc its rosegold and they don’t make them like that anymore (so stupid ik 😭). i don’t know whether it’s worth saving up for a new one or trying to get this one fixed. it also gets super hot when it’s on the charger. all advice welcome lol

macbook pro vs macbook air for a student?

hi, I hope this is okay for me to post, but I currently have a macbrook pro (8 GB memory/256 GB storage) that i got in 2019 and it's on the verge of death (out of storage + 1 hour battery span + super slow), so i'm looking to replace it!

for some context, i'm currently in my last year of university, but will be heading to medical school next fall: around 75% of my computer usage is writing papers, conducting research, and completing tons of readings; i'm looking for a computer that's roughly the size of my current laptop (13 inches)

for the remaining 25%, i occasionally do some photography work and use Adobe InDesign/Photoshop/Lightroom/Premier Pro along with some gaming here and there

which mac would be the most optimal? budget is not an issue as i've been saving over the past year...i've done a bit of research, but i'm still a bit confused what 8-core and 10-core GPU's mean since I normally had my dad help me out with this stuff😅😅 thank you so much, i would really appreciate any help! <3

Selling my MacBook Pro on eBay

Im wondering how much I should sell my Mac book pro 14in m5pro chip 1 tb 24gb
15-16 core had it less then 3 months. What’s a realistic price I don’t want to over charge but I don’t want to lose out on money as well? It’s my first MacBook so I don’t know to much about resell prices.

Should I buy a MacBook Neo?

Hi! I am a senior in high school now and I have been using my personal laptop (MacBook Air retina 2019) and it has been working fine for me despite its age, I use it for school work and light photo editing however, it does heat up very easily when I am working on Lightroom. Anyways since I am going to college next year for marketing yet I still want to do photography on the side should I get the MacBook Neo and just trade in my current device? Or should I try to push it for another year and just save for a newer MacBook Air?

MacBook M5 Air vs M4 pro MacBook Pro?

I’m looking to get a laptop for when I go away for 5 months and I want to use it for video (4k single camera)and photo editing mostly with some light 3d CAD work but nothing crazy just small drawings. Good battery life is important as going to be spending full days travelling at a time.

I’m stuck between;

  1. M5 MacBook Air with the 24gb ram and 10 core CPU / 10 core GPU

  2. Second hand MacBook Pro M4 Pro 24gb ram with the 12 core CPU / 16 core GPU.

They both are probably a bit overkill but wanna make the investment now.

As they’re both around the same price I’m unsure which one will be more suitable to me. The upgraded screen quality and size would be great for the video/photo editing side. But the slim light design of the air is also a plus.

Any recommendations from personal experience would be amazing :)

which mac?

Hiii. Windows user her, but thinking about buying a macbook sometime soon, before my current laptop (acer swift 3 16/512) dies on me. I’m looking at these two models - theyre refurbed.
Apple Macbook Pro 14 2021 with either 16 or 32 RAM. Listed as “very good”. The price for this is 1290$ for 32 GB ram / 512 ssd.
Or
Macbook air 13” M2 2022 16 GB RAM, listed as “almost as new”. Price is 1200$.
I genuinely dont know which of these are better, I have no experience with Macs, I just know I want atleast 16GB ram. I use my laptop for streaming(alot), university, and sometimes a little gaming but it doesnt need to be able to do that. I just want one that’s gonna last me as long as possible, and one thats pretty fast. I’m in scandinavia btw.
What are your opinions on these ?

Moved to a Mac and miss Rainmeter? I built Widgetscape: 39 native desktop widgets

Hi r/macbook, I'm Viorel from VPO Labs, and Widgetscape is the app we make.

Rainmeter was the inspiration: I wanted the calendar, music and system information I check throughout the day to feel like part of the desktop, with a look I could change without writing a skin. We've spent most of this year working on that idea.

Widgetscape now has 39 native desktop widgets for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later. They sit behind your windows and snap to a shared grid. You can put together a small setup rather than filling the whole screen.

A few things it does:

Day Timeline turns your calendar into a radio dial along any screen edge. The needle marks now, events are the stations, and the next one counts down. Hover an event for its details and a Join button for calls, or scroll along the dial to look ahead. It reads Apple Calendar and Google or Microsoft calendars connected in the app, read-only.

The widgets share one visual system. There are up to eight sizes, with layouts designed for each size rather than stretched copies. Pick Glass, Solid, Outline or Transparent, one of 23 palettes or your own colours, and Light, Dark or follow the system. Right-click > Customize handles the changes.

The rest covers everyday things: clocks, weather, agenda, reminders, a focus timer, batteries, system and network readings, a clipboard shelf and more. Now Playing includes controls for Music, Spotify, Safari and Chrome. Repo Pulse shows what's happening in your git repositories.

For people using AI coding tools, there's Token Pulse. It charts Claude Code, Codex and other supported tools from their local session logs. It keeps token counts, model names and timestamps, never conversation content. Nothing from those logs leaves the Mac.

Day Timeline and Token Pulse are both Pro widgets, included in the trial.

Pricing: eight widgets stay free forever: Time, Analog Clock, Calendar, Focus Timer, System Pulse, Batteries, Weather and Moon Phase. Everything is available for 14 days without an account or card. Pro is €9.99 + VAT once, for up to two Macs. No subscription, and there's a 14-day refund for any reason.

WELCOME50 gives 50% off Widgetscape Pro for the first 100 users, valid through November 30, 2026, while available. Choose Buy Widgetscape Pro and enter the code under “Have a discount code?” at checkout.

A few limits worth knowing: the widgets stay at desktop level, so they won't float above your apps. They cover desktop icons underneath them. No Intel build, custom widgets or Rainmeter skin imports yet, and the interface is English only. We're not affiliated with Rainmeter.

It's a signed, Apple-notarized download from our site rather than a Mac App Store app. Each widget has a Privacy tab explaining what it reads. Anonymous usage counts are on by default; Settings > Privacy turns them off and clears anything queued.

We used Claude Code and Codex for part of the work, especially the website. The ideas, design and decisions on what ships are ours, and we test every build on our own Macs.

The attached video is an edited demo from an earlier build; the current collection has 39 widgets.

If you mainly use your MacBook's built-in display, would you keep a small group of widgets, just the calendar dial, or prefer a completely clear desktop?

Is there a way to customize Trackpad haptics WITHOUT changing the click sensitivity?

Context: I have a 16in M1 Pro and on light click, the haptics are too weak; its difficult to feel when I let go of a held click. But I'd prefer not to change the click sensitivity because its harder on my hands.

Note, I have also cleaned around the trackpad with paper, it helped a bit, but not enough.

It's a shame because the force click haptics are easily strong enough, so I know the motor can do it, I just can't find a way to change it.

Looking at buying my first MacBook. MacBook Air (24gb) or MacBook Pro (16gb) for graphic design

I currently have a m2 Mac mini but stupidly I got it with 256gb storage which I am regretting hugely now. I have an external hard drive hooked up to it but then I was thinking would a laptop also come in handy?

I’m a university student so it would mean I could take it in to study but then also use it at home potentially hooking it up to a monitor. Then I could use my Mac mini sparingly for lighter work or even trade it in.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated

MBA 2018 boot issue

My MacBook Air 2018 shut down after having a tab of Safari and Affinity open.

It shows an Apple logo but fails to boot into safe mode, fails recovery, fails to enter diagnostics, but the option boot menu works

It just goes in and out of this stage occasionally, sometimes im in this loop, sometimes it just fails.

I’ve tried an SMC and NVRAM reset but it still doesn’t work, only allowing me to get as far as the Option menu. Occasionally part into the diagnostics but not very far before black screening.

I would be the most grateful I ever could if someone finds a software solution to fix this. I do not have another Mac readily available and last time this happened it just recovered using some random technique.

UPDATE: it is still not working, please could anyone post a solution in the comments.

macbook air m2 a year and a bit more old, left water bottle open in the bag and this happened, immediately rushed to apple store: they said liquid damage only screens gone bad not any internal stuff (not logic board or anything), quoted 40k for replacement, another trusted repair person said to leave it be shut it, and just keep it like that for 3 weeks it will dry out. i’m still not so confident what should i do?

What screen size do you prefer the MacBook?

I personally like 13/14 inches more because it’s more portable

Edit: for the MacBook

MacBook Air 15” vs MacBook Pro 14”

I’m thinking about buying a MacBook for college, and these are the options I’m considering:

• MacBook Air 15” 512GB: $1,496
• MacBook Air 15” 1TB: $1,854
• MacBook Pro 1TB: $1,965

I don’t think I necessarily need a Pro for what I’ll be doing in college, but I want something that will last me for years. The price difference between the 1TB Air and the Pro is only around $111, which is not that much but I’m also wondering if it’s worth spending the extra money for the Pro or if I’d be better off saving that money and getting the Air.
