First trip with my OM-3

Got to take my OM-3 to the Azores and Lisbon a couple weeks ago and had a blast. Having owned a Fujifilm X-T30 before, I'd been deliberating on the OM-3 the past year as I was seeking IBIS, weather-sealing, and a stickier autofocus. The OM-3 does all those things and more.

Stepping into photography as a hobby with the E-P7

A couple of weeks back I went to Japan and I took the opportunity to buy my first camera. After about 3 months of research, I landed on the E-P7, it's nothing special but it perfectly caters to my needs.

I started using the camera right away with no experience whatsoever. Suffice to say, I'm loving this camera.

I got the double zoom kit version and I purchased the Oly 45 f1.8 as well, spending a total of around $750 for the body and 3 lenses.

Most of the pictures here are taken with either the 14-42 kit lens or the 45 f1.8 lens. I did like the SooC look for some of them, but almost all of these were edited in Snapseed. I didn't know how to change the shooting format to raw+jpeg (I learnt it later), so throughout my trip I only shot LF jpegs.

I am itching for a new lens for my Lumix G9

Hello all, just under a year ago I purchased a G9 and a set of kit lenses; 45-150mm f4, 25mm f1.7, and 14mm f2.5. And while they're great and I don't mind them. I actually gravitated to my Pentax-M 28mm f2.8 prime that I adapted to my camera. For some extra context, the G9 was my first digital camera, with a large chunk of my shooting being on an Olympus OM-40 lol...

My kit lenses are fine, theyre sharp and get the job done. But something that I enjoy the most about my Pentax is the tactile nature of it. Everything is adjusted manually (for obvious reasons) and I find that to be a missing element with the more modern lenses I have currently.

Most if not all of my photography is either street or architecture with some instances where distance matters (not often enough though) and all of these photos are for my own collection, I don't shoot professionally or anything.

So I ask, any ideas on prime lenses I should try?

I've attached some of my favorite pictures shot on the camera + lens, thanks for reading.

A weekend walk to Lisbon.

Without any set objective... just a stroll with the family, but always bringing a small photo setup with meโ€”this time the OM-5 plus the Zuiko 12-45mm f/4.

โ€‹Lucky me, we decided to walk by the river and passed by the MAAT museum, famous for its beautiful geometric building.

โ€‹I had never been successful in taking a photo of it that I actually liked... I had always tried wide angles before. This time, I tried a different approach and got this...

Hope you like it!

Moving from an OMD EM-10 Mk 4 to an OM1 Mk 2. Weight change.

Post image

Photo is my present birding setup. I hate the AF. With the teak and aluminum grip, the body, battery and mem card weigh 441 grams. OM 1 Mk 2 body, battery and mem card weight is listed as 599 grams, or about 36% heavier. I will still use my plastic fantastic for now until I can afford one of the pro zooms. I wear the EM-10 on a backpack strap. I will do the same for the om1 mk2. I wear binoculars at the same time on a harness.

Anyone think the weight change will be too much?

Would upgrading to the GH7 or G9 ii be a mistake?

Thumbnail

*Note: TLDR at bottom, my text is "somewhat" long.\*

-- Currently I have a g9i and a somewhat recently purchased 100-400i, but am planning on upgrading my camera (wildlife / birding). I was looking at used GH7's and G9ii's (Although made more for video, the GH7 is nearly identical to g9 photography wise, + it has better video and a similar cost), since I already have my 100-400i.

However, my issue(s) are this. Unfortunately, without using an Olympus lens on the Panasonic body, the 100-400i is basically the nicest lens you can get for Panasonic at long range. Although this is a great lens, it does admittedly have its shortcomings.

  1. Firstly is the m43 system itself and the lighting. I mostly shoot at dawn / dusk, and find that the while the lighting is great for open areas, when I shoot earlier / later, or in more enclosed areas I struggle with lighting with my current setup. Also what sometimes happens even in open fields is I will be finding myself trying to take pictures of song birds and similar ones taking off, thus needing higher shutter speeds and thus more light, and my current lens and body struggling to provide enough.

Although this isn't a huge concern right now, if I do ever decide to get something that is better for light, that will mean either using a OLY lens on the panasonic body and losing some IBIS and whatnot (Such as 300mm f4.0 or 150-400 Pro) or switching systems entirely and thus having to sell my G9ii/GH7 and 100-400i.

  1. There's also the reach; 800mm FFE at 25mp is a lot but I wouldn't mind something slightly longer as I find it is often too short, although this is not a huge issue.

Yet again, if I ever wanted to upgrade this I would need to either use the oly 100-600 on my Panasonic, or switch systems.

Therefore, would it be a mistake to purchase the GH7/G9II? I have no doubt that I'd enjoy it a ton right now, but I am concerned that I will eventually decide I want something that the full Panasonic system can't provide, forcing my to sell it at this point. If this is the case, I would rather skip the "intermediate step" of upgrading my current setup to a g9ii/gh7 and then later switching to a completely different setup, and would rather just buy said different setup now.

At the same time though, completely changing setups would be much more expensive than simply upgrading my camera to the g9ii/gh7 (I also have 2 other m43 lenses - the m.zuiko 60mm and the leica 12-60, which isn't a ton but is still something to consider). Additionally, I just got this lens around 6 months ago, so switching systems this soon feels way too rushed, but I've had the g9 itself for a long time now and have no problems upgrading it.

Note that weight and size are negligible factors for me, I'm used to carrying around giant cinema cameras. I'm probably overthinking this but I also don't want to do something stupid, and figured it was worth typing this up. I will continue to use my current setup in the meantime until I make a choice.

TLDR, So my options are basically:

1: Do nothing. Keep the G9i and 100-400i (and my other 2 lenses) for a while longer, even though g9 is somewhat "outdated" for birding, but by doing so possibly "hurt" my experience and possibly lead to me using my current gear less

2: Upgrade the G9i to G9ii/Gh7 now, keep the 100-400i. Use them for a while (DEFINITELY over 6 months, probably over a year, possibly over two). Then switch systems later (if i still need to), almost certainly "loosing" money on the g9ii/gh7 when I switch.

3: Switch systems now. Lose 0 money on the intermediate of the g9ii/gh7, but instead would be selling the 100-400i after just 5-6 months. Also not entirely sure what I'd switch to, was looking at the systems in the images above (descending order).

-----

Any suggestions, or people with experience with the g9ii/gh7 and 100-400 (Ie do you have any problems with it, or maybe more important, what do you like about it) or any system listed above? Thanks in advance.

Help me streamline my lens collection -> what to sell and buy?

So I got back into photography about 6 months ago. I got a Lumix GX9 which is serving me quite well (there's a few things I'd like to see differently but I can live with them for now). Perhaps in the future I will see myself going for an E-M5 MKiii to get a fully articulating screen and phase-detection AF.

As I got back into it, I went and bought a few lenses based on people's opinions here and well, basically just guessing what would work for me and whatever was available at a good price.

Now that I've shot a few thousand pictures I feel I have a better idea of what I like. I could use some help figuring out which lenses I could sell, and which lenses I should be getting instead.

What I feel I need from my gear:
- Photography is very much a side hobby for me so NOT looking into getting any expensive lenses really! ๐Ÿ’ธ
- All my stuff being compact is important to me as I like to bring my camera on travels, hikes and motorcycle rides and I don't have a lot of space for packing. I'm okay with having a bigger lens, as long as it would replace two smaller lenses.
- I find myself shooting landscapes/nature (mostly details so not very wide shots), a little bit of street photography, animals (not necessarily birds very very far away) and the odd "candid portrait" of people I'm hanging out with. When I say candid I mean I don't care much for the sleek, staged portrait shots with a perfect bokeh and people posing. I prefer people being natural and in the moment in my shots. I don't care much for night photography.
- I find myself annoyed by having to change lenses too often as I'm always walking around with the camera, and packing-unpacking the stuff from my bag. So I have a zoom lens on most of the time. I don't mind a fast prime though, as long as the focal length is versatile enough.

My current collection:

- 7Artisans 18 f6.3 manual focus. I don't use it often but it comes in handy as a bodycap that is also a little bit functional sometimes. For daytime street photography it's kind of fun as it the shots have a certain rendering about them that can match the scene nicely.

- Olympus 25 f1.8. I like this one because it's fast, sharp and has that classic focal length.

- Panasonic 42.5 f1.7. I like this one because it's VERY sharp and has nice color rendering. The focal length I'm not really sure about.. it's a bit too close for many situations. I find myself only using it for carefully staged shots which I don't do very often. I keep reading this is a great lens for portraits but I find people's faces are distorted with it. The Oly 25mm gives better looking proportions I think?

- Panasonic 35-100 f4.0-5.6. I absolutely love this one for how crazy small it is. 100mm reach is very nice, but I do find myself regularly wanting a bit more reach.

- Olympus 40-150 f4.0-5.6 R plastic fantastic. The reach overlaps with the Pany 35-100 but I got it for an absolute steal and everyone here is always so positive about it so I went and bought it. I do love the 50mm extra range over the 35-100.

Lenses I'm looking at:
So far I've seen many people being positive about the Panasonic 12-60 f3.5-f5.6.
However I also found the Panasonic 14-140 f3.5-f5.6 which is not a whole lot bigger and has a lot more reach. Any reason this one seems to be mentioned less often? I also stumbled upon a Tamron 14-150 f3,5-5,8 but nobody seems to talk about this one.
The Panasonic 12-32 f3.5-5.6 kitlens looks handy too as it's very small. Maybe this could replace my 7Artisans as a "bodycap" while in the backpack and could serve me well for street photography with a little bit of extra reach?

Any lenses I'm missing? Any lens I should particularly avoid? Any of my thought processes need correcting? Every insight into this would be greatly appreciated! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Photoshoot we did for a university's play, still relatively new to portraiture and digital as a whole listening to the noise online I was starting to doubt whether MFT's the "right choice" for portraits compared to FF and this setup's been a real delight- long may the system reign. Let me know if you guys have any feedback
