Discussion/Question Do you feel the size of your diary affects your relationship with it?
I used A6 for many years and enjoyed it but recently decided to try out an A5 size so I would have more room to paste in images and to draw.
Nope! Turns out A5 feels very impersonal to me and ruins the vibe lol.
For me A6 feels very intimate in a way I just don’t feel with a bigger notebook.

Journal entry Journaling in the Shavian alphabet
For the past two years, I’ve been journaling daily in the Shavian alphabet - the alternative alphabet for the English language commissioned by Bernard Shaw that was designed by Kingsley Read and first published in 1962.
I found myself attracted to Shavian due to the beautiful shapes and the liberation from traditional orthography that a phonemic alphabet provides. I guess it also provides some privacy as so few know how to read it, but that is not that important for me.
Until now I’ve almost exclusively been using an Apple Pencil and iPad for the job (I use Goodnotes, it has a fantastic fountain pen tool), but inspired by this sub, I think it’s time for me to pivot, and switch to pen and paper. The attached picture was written using a cheap ballpoint, but I will go and get myself a fountain pen and dedicated journal notebook after work. Wish me luck!

Discussion/Question Do you also write in English instead of your native language?
I feel like I'm limiting my access to my own self by writing in English (my second language) instead of my native language. But writing in the latter makes me feel like I've opened my wounds to what can make them worse, it's very uncomfortable being that vulnerable while also knowing actively that all this is you and all of you is yours to hold.
For the people who write in their native language comfortably, how?

Journal entry tarot + coffee + book
Hello everyone, this week’s tarot card is the Two of Swords, reversed— signifying a shift away from a standstill, facing an uncomfortable truth, or making perhaps difficult emotional or spiritual decisions. Coincidentally (??) it may stand for a person who is emotionally repressed or guarded and in denial, and a move towards an acceptance of what is actually real.
Denial can be a very protective measure, especially if one has been hurt in the past. But it quickly becomes counterproductive to remain in that state of mind. Especially in a relationship, where the mutual goal is to move forward as it deepens, with the expectation of vulnerability.
This week’s book is The Glass Castle, a memoir by Jeannette Walls. A tough read about growing up in a neglectful and abusive household, and her steadfast resilience in breaking out of it. Today’s coffee is a flavorful and enjoyable barako bean from the Philippines.

Journal entry Gastritis journal entry
Just as it says... was better a few days after, but still having to watch what I eat. I'm drinking just a tiny bit of coffee every other day. No milk, yogurt, or spicy things yet, out of fear. Very careful with acidic things, as well as heavy seasoning and fats. Still have pending doctors' appointments and such.
I did look up the question about ginger and its antibacterial effect, and it actually affects pathogenic ones, probably through the disruption of their membranes, as well as affecting quorum sensing and biofilm formation (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4345325/). So it's an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial (on those that can affect us), it increases beneficial bacteria, reduces bloating, gas, etc. etc. It was just a godsend for me through this time.
The 'sticker' arrangement was created in GIMP, inspired by Sadie (wordlayout), using free or public domain images. Printed on printer paper for now; hopefully will get an inkjet printer working and clear sticker paper soon.
Notebook: JetPens Kanso Noto Notebook
Pens: Zebra Sarasa Red, Zebra Sarasa Vintage Dark Gray.
Edit to add: I consumed ginger as a ginger-honey tea: For a 8oz cup, I would use about an inch-cube of ginger or a bit more. I'd then peal and cut the ginger into thin slices or mince it, boil for like 5-6 min (or more if I wanted a stronger tea, the stronger the color of the water the stronger the flavor), then strain and pour into a cup with some wildflower honey. The tea would help mainly with gas, nausea, and general discomfort in the stomach.

Journal entry Yes, I write walls of text.
Just started journaling again on October 1, after a year's hiatus. I've been averaging 3-5 pages a day but at least my handwriting is starting to re-solidify. (That's not smeared ink; my camera hand shook a bit.)

Discussion/Question Does handwriting in your journal ever feel weirdly vulnerable now that everything else is typed?
I spent fifteen years in HR typing every single thought into systems. Performance notes, investigation logs, emails that had to be just right. My handwriting basically atrophied. When I left to run our ecommerce brand from home, I started journaling again with an actual pen and it felt almost exposing. Like my brain moved slower and said more than I expected. My spouse asked what I was writing the other day and I genuinely snapped at them, which is not like me at all. It was just garden stuff and ad campaign worries. Nothing dramatic. But something about those pages being physically mine, not in the cloud somewhere, makes me guard them differently. I never felt that way about a Google doc. I wonder if it is the same for anyone else who came back to pen and paper after years of typing everything. Does the medium change what you are willing to put down? Or do I just need more coffee and less existential reflection about ink?
