Discussion Going strong

I bought this car (2007 ZX4) from my neighbor for $400. It was sitting, seemingly deceased, in his driveway for months. The transmission in my wife’s Caravan had shit the bed, so I needed an extra vehicle while we figured out transportation for her.

Got it started and drove it the 100 yards home. It sounded like I was driving a pulpwood truck. I replaced the alternator, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, power steering pump, and motor mounts. 40,000 trouble free miles later, she’ll roll over 300K when I leave for work in the morning.

Question Correct oil Ford Focus

• Upvotes

I just came home after an oil change and noticed they used Kennol 0W20 952A on my 2015 ecoboost 1.0 125hp petrol car.

Is this a suitable oil for my car ? I called the garage and they said it is but I usually get 5W20.

Could someone help me confirm this information ?

Thank you

Question What should I expect done on a wetbelt change?

I've decided I'm getting my wetbelt changed for my 1.0 ecoboost 2016 at 85k miles, so probably will be looking at getting it done next month or this month. Just wondering what should i expect to be done, like wetbelt timing belt, oil pump belt replacement, oil sump clean up i think, something about gaskets? just what should i be expecting so I dont get a dodgy job done on my car, what part brands should be used, im guessing all ford oem?

Transmission / TCM 2014 Ford Focus Won’t Reverse After Clutch Replacement

I have a 2014 Ford Focus with 136,000 miles. Ford diagnosed a clutch problem, P2872 so I bought the LuK 07-233 clutch kit and had my mechanic install it.
My car reversed fine before the repair, but now it won’t reverse. They also changed one of the actuators due to it having corrosion. My mechanic says the clutch is good and suspects an internal transmission problem. The TCM has been replaced last year.
Could this be a TCM, shift fork, actuator, or transmission problem? What should I check before paying for a new transmission?

Cosmetic Mods 2003 Focus wagon: adding an extra amber T10 LED turn signal in the reverse light housing (keeping stock turn signal + reverse). T10 won't light, could it be the GEM?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all,

I have a 2003 Ford Focus wagon (US-built) and I'm trying to add an extra amber LED turn signal in the rear lamp, using the reverse light area. The reverse lens is clear, so an amber T10 should show up as amber. I want to keep the stock turn signal and the stock reverse light working normally.

What I did:

- Drilled the housing from above (without reaching the reverse bulb) to fit a T10 socket.

- Installed a CAN bus T10 LED in it.

- Tapped the signal wire of the stop/turn bulb (soldered) and added a separate, independent ground.

- Polarity is correct.

Problem: the T10 doesn't light at all. Original stop/turn light: [still works normally / also stopped working].

I'm starting to suspect the GEM. Questions:

  1. Has anyone added an extra turn signal like this on a 2000-2004 Focus? Did a simple tap work, or did you need a load resistor?

  2. Is the stop/turn wire the right one to tap, or should I tap somewhere else?

  3. Could the GEM be what's stopping it, or should I check something simpler first (fuse, bad tap, socket)?

If I get it working I'll post a full write-up.

Thanks!

General Maintenance 2014 Focus SE automatic how to get the most life out of it

Got the car 5 years ago at 80K miles and now it’s at 130k. I baby the transmission but it’s clearly getting older and shifter at higher RPM, still drivable but feels like it’s going to have issues by this time next year. I know the transmission is a known issue in this car and I’ve considered replacing it for the sake of staying in a paid off car. I’ve been recommended a transmission fluid change but someone else said a transmission fluid change could take away whatever little bit is still grabbing and possibly have to replace the transmission if it stopped grabbing. I kept up on oil changes but never a transmission fluid change.

Should I change the transmission fluid? Should I expect to replace the transmission if I want to get it to 200k miles?

Mechanical Help Front Swaybar Bushings

I have an 05 wagon with a bad swaybar bushing on right side. I've searched reddit and found a post of someone who replaced theirs without lowering the subframe. Unfortunately the poster didn't elaborate and it says "deleted" where the poster's name would be. Anyone else accomplish this, how and how difficult?

Mechanical Help Cd drive malfunction

My 2013 Ford Focus CD drive is malfunctioning, it randomly tries to load a CD without me putting one in, and then randomly turns off BT and plays the radio. I replaced the CD drive tonight with the same build number and part number but it freezes at the Ford logo and won't load the bluetooth. Any help?

Question Anything will help

So I was in my 5spd 2014 S and on the highway at about 3700rpms in 5th car started shaking a little and loosing power so i thought I'll clutch in and go to neutral waiting for my speed to drop and went to 4th clutched out and gassed upto about 4k rpms and as the clutch came in fully my rpms jumped passed 7k and i blew smoke outta my exhaust and pulled off the highway. While pulling over my engine died and I could no longer start it. I assume my clutch is bad but what would cause the crank no start. The video is attempt 3 of trying to start the car after getting it home from the tow. My next question is would ya'll assume i need a new flywheel as well but theyre hella expensive. Anyone got any other insight to what could be happening cause a clutch being bad wouldnt cause a no start. Car is a 2014 S with just about 215K miles. Everything is completely original as i have the maintenance list since 8K mile.

Question Have any of you replaced the clutch and forks yourself?

My 2012 focus is at 170k miles with the original clutch and forks. I don't creep in traffic and don't accelerate quickly. I know the engine on these cars last a while and was wondering if anyone on here has done the work on the transmission themselves. From my understanding, it looks like you can hire a mobile mechanic to take out the transmission on day 1 and put it back in on day 2, and do the swap yourself between visits. Has anyone tried that method? It looks like it wouldn't be that expensive to do it that way, and won't take that much time either. Am I missing something? It looks like a hack where you can keep buying 2012-2018 cars with dead transmissions and get an extra 70-100k miles out of them.

Question Diagonal brake pair dragging diagnosis

Long story short, FR and RL brakes have been slightly dragging and getting hot. Brake components at the wheel are good, residual pressure in the line and the diagonal nature points to an upstream problem. Forscan shows no ABS DTCs and system pressure returning to 0 when off the brake (idk where it measures this, but shouldn’t it show trapped pressure?). Brake fluid was just flushed a week ago and but there’s still a bunch of crud back in the reservoir. Now I’m wondering if my next shot should be just an ABS system bleed with forscan or if the crud looks like master cylinder seal crud and I should be replacing that. Or maybe I’ve already got too much stuff lodged in the HCU and none of that would help. Would love to hear if anyone’s dealt with anything similar before.

Mechanical Help (MK2.5) Water leaks but i cant find them

Hello everyone, i have a focus mk2.5 zetec s with a sunroof. I bought it 1 year ago used. Seems like i have fallen victim of the very common problem of this generation. Water leaks inside the cabin... But there is a twist.

I cant find water anywhere, but the car smells like moisture or something is wet for a long time. I have looked in the boot, completely dry, the sunroof 2 front drains work fine, the driver and passenger side mats are completely dry, the headliner completely dry. The car still smells like something it's wet after every rainy day. I have even got the car biologically cleaned, worked for a few months then the smell came back.

Im on the verge of selling the car just because of this, i cant find a solution and i keep spending money. One day it rained so hard that the roads almost became rivers. The next day when everything outside was dry, i got into the car and literally everything i was touching was damp, the steering wheel, my cloth seats, seat belts. Also the front windshield was fogged up. But still no sign of water somewhere looking like a pool.

I cant find the problem, either the car traps moisture inside for some reason, or there is actually water somewhere which i cant find. Any ideas? Literally anything will help, i dont know what to do and im not ready to spend 500€ at least to strip my car off at the dealership.

Interior Mods 2003 Ford Focus Factory Radio Swap

Swapped my 6006 6 CD changer to 4500 with cassette deck for old school Bluetooth connection. Always ran cassette adapters in my cars when I was younger, way better sound quality than FM transmitters. Really made a huge difference and don't have to buy head unit, dash kit and take time getting fitment right and wiring harness spliced in. Can even buy cassette to bluetooth adapters but I was worried about battery life since they're so small so opted for external one. $35 for the cassette radio, $30 for the cassette/bluetooth adapter, $5 for the stereo removal pin tool and get to keep the stock look.
