Discussion My fanfic has the same tropes as someone else’s fic

Hi! So I realize this has been posted before and I saw the “two cakes” theory from someone else’s comment but I have another question/rant. I started writing a fic about a month ago and 5/8 of my tropes overlap with a really popular Harry Potter fic.

I actually read hers bc I was excited there was another fic with those tropes. Then I checked her profile and she posted “I saw some people writing with the same tropes. I’m not saying I own them but it’s really discouraging and makes me not want to write.”

The differences lie within our plots and mine has wlw. All her character pairings are straight. I won’t post the tropes just because they are really specific and there’s only 10 stories when I searched the tags on Wattpad. She’s specifically said that she doesn’t like it when people use the same tropes 🫩 I feel like this is so unfair?

She has since taken down the post but there’s still people posting on her page, begging her to expose the writers who copied her.

She has 4k followers and I have 50. Our tropes are the same but my fic takes a whole different route. She’s saying she’s going to expose the writers if they keep writing. There’s a chance it might not even be about me but yeah, I’m just very scared to be the victim of a witch hunt lmao.

I think this fandom is huge and we can’t be claiming tropes as our own.

Do I even continue writing? If I do, maybe I’ll just keep it to myself lol.

ETA: our OC’s face claims are from the same show. I saw her (my face claim) in a movie but thought I should add this. I did watch the show but that was like 10 years ago, I forgot they were both in it.

Lost Fic [Lost Fic InuYasha] circa 2005-7 on fanfiction.net complete multi chapter rated M

Looking for a completed rated M modern AU Inuyasha fic. I read it circa 2005-7. It was rated M.

It focused mainly on Sango and Miroku. Miroku fucked a mom in a bathroom at a karate competition. Inuyasha had a dojo and Shesshomaru was an art curator.

I remember it being so well written.

Writing Questions Difficulty writing

So I have a problem. I see a lot of people talking about how they write too much, or mean to write a one-shot and end up writing 20 chapters. I have the opposite issue. I don't write nearly enough in terms of word count, but I can't think of ways to add more without unnecessary padding. And I don't want to do that, but I know i'll probably get more readers if I have a higher word count. Any advice?

Writing Questions Advice on writing a toxic, privileged friend group and their dynamic

Hi! I’m currently writing a fic about a rich friend group who are also quite spoiled and corrupt in the sense that they’re entitled and used to getting what they want.
I started the story in the future, where a murder happens, and then go back to the past to explore their friendships( friends since childhood) and what eventually led them to that point. I’mm a little stuck on how to portray their personalities and relationships, especially since they all attend a boarding school. How can I show that they’re spoiled, privileged and corrupt morally without making it feel too unrealistic? And how can I develop the dynamics within the friend group so that their relationships feel complex and believable, with things like loyalty, jealousy, rivalry, secrets and betrayal?
I’d really appreciate any advice, ideas or examples of how I could approach this. Thanks sm !!

Recs Wanted Any explicit fics ( on Ao3 preferably) On male masturbations? NSFW

I just am really into reading about when males do it. And would love some recommendations not like they get caught. Actually if they were to get caught the person who caught them just watch not them actually do anything together. But idk something about solo men is so hot to me.

Writing Questions Losing control over a work

Sometimes, even if I have a seemingly decent plan for the work, I end up somewhere I don't wanna be at. I'm not sure how it happens or why, but at some point, I just realize that the paragraph-to-paragraph logic has led me completely astray from the intended path, and my only options are either to replan the whole work around this diversion (but then it would no longer be the work that I wanted to write), or to scrap it and start from the very beginning (where's the guarantee that I won't unknowingly veer somewhere again?). It's such a weird feeling, being kind of trapped by your own story.

If you've ever had a similar issue: have you figured out the reason behind it? How did you deal with it?

Writing Questions How do u get people to read ur fic in a chill, normal, casual way?

I usually just write fics for myself but over the past year I've been writing a thing and creating characters and a plot 'n' stuff that I'm actually really proud of. Like it's becoming a side project for me alongside tryna get my degree and I'd just really love for people to see it and like idk see the creativity and spunk of it, I guess? And get their thoughts.
So I guess my question is, how do people normally do it?
(I did originally have a whole paragraph about being scared or promoting stuff but I removed that cuz it’s just irrelevant and like…I mean how else are you gonna do it)

Writing Questions How do you make an OC-Centric fic appealing?

I love the story of X-Men First Class and I’ve been thinking of writing a similar revenge story in the Star Wars universe. However at this point I don’t think I could make the cast canon-majority without it feeling forced.

I’m somewhat good at character writing (though I suck at writing funny characters) but still I’m fearing the fact that it’s not about canon characters will prevent me from keeping readers attention, if I get any readers at all

Writing Questions New to fanfiction writing! I started one a while ago but burnt myself out, looking for advice!

So I read a lot of fanfic as a kid and I decided about a year ago to try my hand at writing my own rwby fic. It started out well and I was feeling super confident in my writing as I set a few pieces and planned for the future… then I got to what would be episode one. I feel like I was consistently having to go between wikis and my writing just to make sure the dialogue was accurate and I just burnt myself out stupid fast. I want to maintain accuracy in my story and have been thinking about continuing it, but I know if I go about it the same way I’m going to burn myself out again. Does anyone have similar experiences or ideas to work around it?

Discussion fanfic deletada de Heartstopper

• Upvotes

Hi friends! Does anyone know where to find a *Heartstopper* fanfic where Charlie is trans, has always gone to school with Nick, and they end up at the same university—but they hate each other? It contains quite a bit of profanity, and at one point, during a party, Charlie pours beer over Nick’s head.

Lost Fic Lost Fic: Marvel/Multiple Fandoms

webnovel.com, protagonist was named Ricky. Asshole in his life, drunkard and promiscuous. Dies in a car accident in the first chapter, reincarnated into mafia-era New York. Technically a Marvel fanfic, but focuses mostly on other stuff. Lots of smut. MC gets adopted by Lucky Luciano, becomes Ricky "Slick" Luciano, and there's a ton of crossovers (King Arthur/Merlin as the big bad, Dracula, Marvel and DC characters, Agatha, etc). I first read it in late 2024, tried to find it recently, but couldn't see it on webnovel. Good luck!

Lost Fic (Twilight) Looking for a Bella/Edward fic

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a Bella/Edward fic I read about 5ish years ago. I'm not sure if it was on FFN or Scribd (random, I know). Bella is already a vampire and the Cullens run into her when they are hunting. Everything is happening in Forks.

When they find her, her eyes are completely black, even the whites of her eyes, showing how thirsty she is. They welcome her to the family, show her how to hunt and integrate herself into the Forks community.

I think the fic is named along the lines of 'angel, black angel' or angel is mentioned in the fic when describing Bella. Also, If I remember correctly, Bella has memory loss, has no idea who changed her and how she got to Forks. Alice did see her in her visions while the Cullens move to Forks, which happens at the beginning of the fic.

Writing Questions Trouble writing the first part of my story

Hello! I always see some good advice on here, so I wanted to throw my metaphorical hat in the ring and get some advice for a fic I'm writing.

The first part of this fic is an entire slog for me to write. I have the whole story outlined and I know where everything is headed, and I'm so excited writing the other parts (I've skipped ahead in my writing), but I can't seem to conjure the same enthusiasm and prose for the first bit of my story. I've seen a lot of "if you're bored writing, your readers will be bored" and "if you're having trouble with the enthusiasm to write it, it's probably not necessary."

And you know, I get that. However, my fic is a canon divergent AU, and it diverges at the very beginning. Not enough to change the overarching plot of canon (in the beginning) but enough that relationships, character dynamics, and some scenes are completely different. I don't want to just start where I want to start either (which is where the plot diverges entirely from canon). I really do want to establish the setting and introduce everyone, and I really enjoy that kind of relationship and character building in other stories, but when it comes to me writing it? Not so much.

But man, I've had such a hard time trying to write it. Every time I try to add to the beginning, I'm oh so bored and I can't seem to formulate any words to even put on the page.

Edit: Thank you for the replies! I can't respond to all of them, but they were all very helpful :)

Subreddit Meta Excerpt Extravaganza - October 19

Welcome to the Excerpt Extravaganza!

Much like its predecessor, Monologue Monday, this is a thread for posting pieces of fic.

You can still post your dialogue, or any other part of your fic you'd like to show off.

You can also post excerpts from fics you've read that you think were exceptional and need to be shared.

  • Limit is 10 line breaks, but use your judgement. Short and attention-grabbing is better than a long segment and people scrolling past.
  • State the Fandom | Rating | Any Applicable Content Warnings at the top of your comment!
  • Link to fic is welcome but optional.
  • Context is optional.
