Weekly Check In Wellness Wednesday: Weekly Check In
Welcome back everyone!
Time for our Wellness Wednesday check in. We know this community means a lot to most of our members and that Tuesdays have been harder on some users than others, but we are at our core a community and we are here to support each other.
Now that the sub is open once again we’d like to hear all about your (mis)adventures on Tuesday. Did you go on grand adventures? Get into mischief? Get some writing done?
Maybe you just binged a few more fics on the archive itself. Tell us all about it! Break out that purple prose and tell us as cheesy of a story as you feel like.
Or just talk about your day.

Complaint/Pet Peeve/Venting Please don't do this
Blurred text for a reason; please don't harass the author.
I've seen people do this thing where they put a massive amount of blank space in the summary of a fic and it's harmless but dear god does it make me angry. It's taking up like 75% of my screen!! The bottom text was the prompt for the fic, like you could easily put that in the notes. Or use a singular linebreak.

Complaint/Pet Peeve/Venting I feel like the "No Archive Warnings Apply" should be mutually exclusive

I feel like the "No Archive Warnings Apply" should be mutually exclusive. It doesn't make sense to me that a warning that no warnings apply can be put next to several warnings.
Also why do people do that? Do they want to use it as a way to tag "taboo" things because tags don't seem enough to them? Still illogical.
Questions/Help? New Uk ban on choking and incest, will it affect Ao3?
Basically what the title says. In the November the uk government is putting a ban on chocking and incest that’s show in a pornographer way, it says from what I can read(I’m not a big politic reader so I could be wrong with my understanding), that it could include uploading, posting or otherwise making the content available to someone online.
There’s a lot of incest works on Ao3 and I have read some, and probably a lot of other brits have read/write about it. So what I’m asking, will this affect us in someway? Can any who knows the law better can explain it?
Just to put it out there, banning choking? Ridiculous.
Edit: fixed spelling mistakes and grammar

Complaint/Pet Peeve/Venting Shoutout to fellow writers who are feeling discouraged
When you pour your soul into your fic and click "post" for the first time, your fingers trembling with joy because your story is finally seeing the light, but your hits start slow... I feel you.
When you post the second chapter, hoping for the numbers to grow, but they only come in dribs and drabs... I feel you.
When you get to chapter five and hope for that first kudo, but it never arrives... I feel you.
When it seems like your hits have completely stopped... I feel you.
When you click "post" feeling like you're just screaming into the void... I feel you.
When you look at other fics' statistics and, even though you write out of pure love for the fandom, you still get that painful twinge in your heart... I feel you.
When you seriously think about deleting your fic, and maybe your entire account as well... I feel you.
But let me tell you something: please, don't.
I'm sure that somewhere, someone out there is reading your work and waiting for the next chapter. I'm sure that more people will give it a chance, even if right now it feels impossible.
Be incredibly proud of your story. Remember why you started writing it in the first place: that work is your grand victory, and nobody can take it away from you.
Sending you a massive hug. You're not alone in this.
Fun & Games what fandom or ship have you recently fallen back in love with?
this has been happening to me with Venom lately (Venom/Eddie) and honestly it's been wonderful!
i'm back to reading fics about them and having the time of my life 🥰
it's like rediscovering an old favorite all over again.
has this ever happened to you guys? what fandom or ship did you find your way back to?

Questions/Help? Do you guys keep anything on in the background while you write?
If so, what is it?

Meme/Joke Have you ever done something like this?
There have been books or even TV shows where I have skipped a certain POV, especially in a boomerang type of writing, 'cause the one plot of the story interested me more than the 5 other ones laid out in the story.
(e.g. Stranger Things S4 for me; I know I'm going to be shot for this)
And boomerang storytelling is even worse when the other protagonists in the story are simply not as interesting or god-forbid annoying/badly written.

Meme/Joke Me when I can't decide which fandom I'll visit today:
I just wanted to look if there are ff for a specific fandom and stumbled across this...never expected to see an combination of George Orwell's 1984 with My Little Pony, Marvel and Nintendo 😭

Discussion (Non-question) Anyone else fully stop reading formally published work in favour of fanfic?
The title. I feel like mainstream "romantasy", "dark romance", "erotica" (I don't read erotica but many authors have a bad tendancy to shove it into the story even if its not in the synopsis), and even the more niche genres is just really objectively bad and cliche. Like with the same ten plots repeated every time, such as "petite feminine woman who is actually really badass is stuck with a dark haired broody man and they go from enemies to lovers 🥹❤️"
ik this isn't an uncommon sentiment with "booktok" and what not, but has anyone else just FULLY stopped reading formally published works? For a solid year I kept picking up books that sounded interesting and unique before realising its the same plot over and over again.
It might also be that my fandom tends to write AUs more than stuff that's very connected to the source material
EDIT: The general consensus in the comments is that I should be reading more genres and I even got some recommendations from y'all. Thank you all so much, I'm going to be reading them when I get the chances.

Excitement/Celebration 🎉 I just finished my first fic!
It took just under a year which is a whole lot more months than I’d initially thought it would have. It’s only the first part of what will probably end up as 3 different fics, but it’s done and I’m really happy with it.

Fun & Games Got drunk and donated to AO3
Definitely not the worst way I’ve spent my money while drinking! Considering the number of hours I’ve spent on the site…
Would recommend. Am still drunk, AMA.
Comment Commentary I don’t know what you really expected
I don’t think they meant this in a rude or entitled manner, it’s just quite a funny comment to me and made me laugh :)

Questions/Help? Writing an Original Work
hello everyone. i always write for fandoms when it comes to Ao3. but it’s been a few days since i wondered what it would be like to post an original story. i have the almost perfect plotline and face claims for it, maybe i’ll even make it an x reader. my question is: for anyone who has posted original works on the site, how did it go? is anybody ever interested? when i stumble across original works on the site they’re almost always straight up porn. my fic will contain sex but not in that way, it’s going to be a romance. if anyone has a thought to add, an advise, or an experience to share it would help me greatly. my other option is posting on wattpad but… i dont know about that lol😂 thank you!

Questions/Help? Do you read the author's notes before a chapter? (Especially if they're kind of long)
Hi everyone.
I have a question that's been on my mind because I'd like to post a few fics that have some sensitive topics, and no matter how carefully I try to tag everything, I know tags alone won't be enough to cover everything I should warn for (some themes are hard to summarize in a tag, or there's just no tag that fits).
My plan was to put those extra warnings in a note before the chapter, but I don't want to put in the effort if nobody's going to read it anyway, and I end up with comments saying "you didn't warn about this."
So I wanted to ask you directly:
- Do you read the notes before a chapter, even if they're kind of long?
- If they're very long, do you still read them or do you skip them?
- If you see trigger warnings there, is that enough for you, or do you prefer everything to be in the tags no matter what?
Thanks!
Edit: Thank you all very much for your responses; you’ve helped me a lot!

Complaint/Pet Peeve/Venting Comments aren't for promoting your own work
I feel so conflicted right now. And a little pissed off honestly. I don't really know what to do, so I figured I'd just vent a bit and try to get it off my chest.
I have a work I've been regularly updating and I have a reader who pretty consistently comments on every chapter. They usually say something nice, about how they like the writing, or the source material, typical stuff. But every few comments or so they'll also mention something about their own works.
Like, "I love this idea, I wrote something similar, but with character b and a together." Or. "A/B are so cute, in a fic I wrote they did blank too."
And it's not exactly a link or a title, but it's just started to get to me. My fic has a lot of chapters so with all the comments from this one person, the mentions of their writing has been adding up. And it just irks me.
Like, I really appreciate that they're into my work and comment about it. But at some point it kind of starts to feel like a not so subtle poke at me to read their stuff. Which I've actually tried to do!
On another fic of mine they mentioned writing something and I actually took the bite and offered to read it. But the thing is, their works are all not in English, and Google translate sucks, and it's actually painful to read. I did read the work and left a comment. But I've avoided their works since because of that.
So, all at once i feel annoyed with them and sad for them, because their works just don't get as much attention because of the language barrier. And I feel a bit guilty that I'm not giving them the support they give me. We're in such a tiny fandom. I really would be reading their stuff if I could. But then I come back to the rudeness of them constantly bringing up their fics in my comment section.
Agh!!!! I don't like conflict. I don't want to start something, or hurt their feelings, or mute them, because we do actually bond some over our Canon sometimes. But I have this angry little part of me that's fuming. Ugh.
Maybe I brought this on myself. I've had really nice experiences with other people, sharing works and bonding over them. I didn't think responding with "I'm interested in reading your stuff" one time, would mean I'd get hounded about it forever. Though to be fair, it feels more like having a puppy following me around then anything else. Maybe I'm just an asshole.
I'll probably just ignore them.
