Mod News Just getting started in VO? Dont know where to begin? READ THIS FIRST

Welcome to r/VoiceActing!

First of all, we get asked the question, "how do I get started in VO?" a lot.

Seriously: A lot.

There's a lot of information below that answers that question, but PLEASE read this first.

This subreddit is for established, new and aspiring voice actors to discuss issues, share tips, strategies, critiques and resources related to voice acting.

This is a good community, and rude or obnoxious behavior will not be tolerated. If you cant act like a grown-up and remain civil in your conversations, you'll be removed from the sub. Personal attacks, threats of violence/abusive language, or bigotry in any form will not be tolerated.

THE RULES:

* **No Free Requests**

All requests for voice work must be reasonably compensated. Terms of compensation must be articulated in your request. Acceptable forms of compensation include:

Monetary ($5.00 USD minimum)

Barter (services exchange)

Royalty share (only on currently monetized projects—no prospective payment).

Unpaid requests will be removed. If your project is unpaid, try posting to r/recordthisforfree, VoiceActing Club, or

CastingCall.Club.

* **No Offer Posts**

Do not make posts offering your voice or production services. If you’re looking for work, respond directly to request threads. Simply put, this is not an appropriate community to solicit. Requests for feedback/critique are welcome!

* **No Advertising**

Do not post advertisements for paid products or services. We love articles, blog posts, feedback/critique threads, and other great points of discussion! But if your post includes advertisement for a paid product or service, it will be removed. If you believe a certain product or service would be of genuine interest and benefit to the community, message the moderators about it.

* **Search Before You Ask**

Got a general question about voice acting? How to get started? What gear to buy? How to get better at acting? How to find work? These get asked all the time around here, and plenty of our more experienced community members give graciously detailed answers very frequently. There’s a lot of wisdom to find here if you’re just getting started! Before you post your question, use the search bar and see if others have asked the same thing—they probably have!

Just getting started?

We're happy that you've decided you want to be a voice actor. There are a lot of resources available to learn about voice acting.

The column on the right of this page lists some good sites to check out to begin the process.

It takes a lot of work to become a successful voice actor/ voiceover artist. It takes a considerable amount of time, effort, and yes money to do this. There's just no way around it.

But if you were starting from zero and had no idea what to do to begin the process, here's some steps to follow and the logical order you should follow them in:

  1. Take acting classes.

  2. Take improv classes.

  3. Take business classes.

  4. Take marketing classes.

  5. Then talk to a voiceover coach. Work with them on building your skills.

  6. Practice practice practice.

  7. Get your demo recorded, put together a website that showcases your talents in one place.

  8. Then Start marketing.

  9. While this is going on, continue to develop your skills in voiceover, voice acting and business and marketing. Always keep refining your process of finding, auditioning, recording/ editing and invoicing clients. Continuing education is necessary. Always keep learning. Always keep building your skills.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

PAID work [PAID €20-60] Looking for Female VA with a Valley Girl Accent for a Y2K/Bratz-Inspired Character in My Indie Game

Hey everyone!

I'm currently developing an indie game called Unemployed, a dark comedy unemployment simulator built in Unreal Engine 5, with a PS1-inspired art style. I'm the sole developer, and the game will be released on Steam.

I'm looking for a female voice actress to voice a character called Diamond, who hosts the game's wardrobe/dress-up screen. She helps the player pick outfits, explains some mechanics and occasionally makes fun of their fashion choices.

For her personality, I'm going for something reminiscent of Y2K and Bratz dolls. She's bubbly, energetic, a little sassy and occasionally passive-aggressive. Ideally, I'd love a Valley Girl accent, with that early 2000s mean-girl energy. She's not supposed to be outright mean, though, more like someone who's genuinely enthusiastic but a little judgemental without realising it.

Here's a quick breakdown:

  • Payment: €20-60 EUR flat rate (depending on terms).
  • Language: English, preferably with an American Valley Girl accent.
  • Script: 31 individual lines, approximately 272 spoken words.
  • Delivery: Ideally separate WAV files with reasonably clean audio.
  • Payment terms: 50% upfront once we've agreed to work together, and the remaining 50% upon delivery.
  • Usage: Commercial use in the game on Steam and related promotional material, such as trailers and social media.

You'll also be fully credited in the game, and you're more than welcome to use the recordings in your own portfolio or demo reel.

I've already got the full script written, including some notes on how I imagined the delivery. They're just suggestions, though, and I'd love for whoever voices her to have some fun with the character!

I'm happy to share some WIP screenshots and gameplay footage of the game too, so you can get an idea of what you're contributing to.

I know the payment isn't a massive amount, but I'm developing this entirely on my own and working with a pretty limited budget. I'm not expecting professional studio equipment or anything like that, just reasonably clean audio and someone who'd enjoy bringing the character to life.

If you're interested, feel free to leave a comment with some previous voice work or a demo reel!

Thanks for reading!

Booth Related Rate My DIY Set-up!

Heyo! Brand spanking new to this (literally started 3 days ago), but I've always had an interest in VA and I thought turning my closet into a DIY recording booth would be a fun challenge! I spent the last few days studying every piece I could find on the internet when it came to the acoustics of a space, and realized my closet was actually kinda perfect for some VA work with a few adjustments.

The mic, arm, and pop filter were all already owned from a venture I had previously undertaken years ago, and were sitting in my room for years. Nice to finally get to use them! I set them up the best way I could in terms of available places to clip them on. I tried to tuck the mic as far towards the back wall as I could, but the arm isn't the most flexible.

The clothes as far as I understand are already great for a low budget way to improve the acoustics of a space, and it worked out nicely that I could get two big heaps of old shirts, hoodies and jackets to box the mic in with. The big brown jacket importantly blocks off the shelving on the right side, and I fill those spaces with cushions when I actually record anything just in case.

The biggest problems I had left were the hardwood floor, the uncovered walls, and a big cavernous space above the top shelf that was just echo central.

For the walls I decided to string up a big heavy comforter, and screw it in against some wood beams. It fully covers the bare back wall and the one on left side as well. I tried to leave as much slack as I could because I read that it would be more effective than if I had it pinned entirely flat. This also meant I could cover the floor with it as a bonus, basically creating a carpet.

The underside of the top shelf gets buffered by a destroyed old childhood pillow of mine.

The space above the shelf is mostly handled (I hope) now that I've got a body pillow and 4 tons of shorts and pants up there.

I'm aware it might sound a little boxy, and the original HyperX Quadcast prooobably isn't the greatest VA mic out there. Still, I can notice a huge difference even just speaking in the little space I made vs how it sounds outside of the room, or how it sounded before.

In terms of next steps, I have 3 that come to mind immediately.

The top shelf on the right side needs some more fluff, there is a bit of a gap the body pillow doesn't quite cover and it's basically just a box of hard walls in that space.

The arm I'm using for the mic is half broken and to be frank - just kinda sucks...I think I'll buy a new one if I can find something more flexible to work around the clothes.

The thing I was planning to do before posting this, is ordering an acoustic blanket and stringing it up on the outside of the doorframe as a makeshift door. As you can see, my closet does not have any manner of door. How much of a difference would you all reckon that would make?

Kinda proud of myself currently but - please don't let that stop you from tearing me a new one in the comments. I am a complete beginner, and I'd totally love advice from all the pros! I did make this for literally $0, so I know it's not gonna perform like an actual recording booth...Just have a sense of humor about it, you know?😂

I guess the only drawback is I have to do my laundry very consistently...

Let me know, would you use my setup in a pinch? I'd be happy to post a demo of the actual sound I get in there if anyone is interested in my little closet project.

PAID work Looking for a male VA with a Scottish accent!

Hello everyone! Just like the tittle suggests, I need a male, Scottish Va to act as my OC’s voice claim! I’m looking for deep, soothing voices and preferably mid to thick accents. The script I have prepared is approximately 750 words long so I’m offering up to $60 for this job. All payments will be made via PayPal. I usually split the payment for the actor to start recording and pay the remaining half after I receive the final product though I’m open to discussions about this. I will allow anyone who is interested in this to send me a quick sample of their previous works till November 1st. Whoever gets picked will be notified via DMs.

Here’s an example of what I’d like my character to sound like. If you’re not able to replicate this exactly, please know that is not an issue. Just let me know beforehand and we can try something else instead. I’m open to hear everyone out as long as it’s remotely close to what I expect.

A few important notes:
— I’m literally just an artist trying to get my character a voice. This isn’t supposed to be a professional work.
— No AI voice recordings will be accepted. At the same time, no recording will be used for AI learning or any kind of AI enhancement.
— Feel free to DM me any further questions!

Discussion One and a half years later, thank you.

So a little over a year and a half ago, I posted what I thought was an ok self made demo reel. The feedback was brutal, but somewhat constructive. First time in a long time since my rejection sensitivity dysphoria was right, but I got back up, followed some advice and made my way to Jennifer Hales' skillshub site.

Last month, I got my first indie video game role and IMDB credit. It's been a journey and a struggle getting auditions out around my hellish retail job, but I just wanted to thank this community for putting me on the path of becoming a voice actor. I didn't know that I needed that punch to the gut, but voice acting has greatly improved my life.

Advice My first sharing of any voice acting, looking for advice!

I am looking at getting into voice acting. My long-term goal would be to narrate fantasy books, but I know we all start somewhere. I've never shared anything related to this before. The text read is just a generated fantasy passage. There isn't a lot of dialogue and I feel my narration voice needs the most work/consistency and finding my voice for it.

Microphones TLM 103 over U87 ever?

With the cost/budget factor aside. Are there situations where the TLM 103 actually beats the U87? The specs of the TLM 103 seem to point that way for certain situations, but is it really that simple? For a home studio, you for example don’t need the polar patterns and the extra SPL is useful, etc. is all you’re paying for the name at that point? Aside minor differences in tonality?

Any insights into what actually matters would be greatly appreciated!

Advice Etiquette for multiple rosters sending the same job

Hello! First time I've been in this position, two different rosters sent me the same project. Is it bad form to submit an audition to both? What about submitting the same audition audio?

These aren't agents, I haven't signed any agreements. No exclusivity. I'd just like to increase my shot by getting more ears on my audition, assuming that's not a faux pas of some kind.

Thank you!

Advice The Welsh accent drill that starts with the lilt, not the R

Start with the drill. Before you touch a vowel, find the lilt.

Say this out loud: "The red river runs past the little town." Flat, the way you'd read a news bulletin. Now say it again, but let the stressed syllables climb. TA-ble rides up the scale. Little rides up. Town rides up. Not louder, higher. Welsh stress isn't a punch, it's a step upward. That one change does more work than any rolled R ever will.

I learned this the hard way in a coaching session two years back. An actor came in for a Welsh part and sounded like she was auditioning for a choir. Every line sang, everything floated, and none of it sounded like a person talking. So we threw out the vowels entirely and spent twenty minutes on pitch alone. Red, river, runs, past, little, town, each stressed beat climbing a step. When we put the words back together she sounded like someone's neighbor instead of a soloist. The music has to live inside the speech, not sit on top of it.

Once the lilt is moving, the sounds slot in fast. Keep your vowels pure with no diphthong slides: go is goh, say is seh, nothing glides. The R is a bright tap off the tongue tip, red and very, not a pirate roll. Keep your L light in every position, well stays wel. Sound the full ing, sing-ing and goh-ing, never drop it. And pop your Ts crisp, bet-ter, sit-ee, never flapped.

Try it on this: "We are going singing in the valley." Then: "Very well, I will carry the milk." Record yourself on the first line flat, then with the lilt climbing. Listen back. The difference is usually embarrassing in the best way.

Oh, and Welsh people are generally forgiving if you follow the music of it. The thing that gets you mocked is the cartoon version.

What accent's music took you the longest to hear?

Advice Micro PC Suggestions

Can anyone recommend PCs, preferably refurbished or cheap, that would be a good option for VO work? My aging laptop likes to randomly tweak my audio in Reaper so I am suddenly barely audible. Sometimes it's a simple fix of closing and reopening Reaper, other times I have to restart my aging laptop.

I was looking at a refurbished Dell Optiplex 7000, but I just need something that will work and is as close to cheap/free as possible.

Microphones Recording studio set up.

Hello! Looking to get into this field. It’s something that’s always interested me when I was little and I know it’ll take time to practice and hone and will begin as a hobby up until I find myself in a spot that like.
But anyways I have a few questions, generally would like some pointers to what I should for my home recording spot. I currently have an audio interface, I think it’s called the live 005 (Synido), but it’s relatively cheap, I want know if I need to change that out for something better.

Secondly I want to know what sort of microphone I should be going for here. I’m currently running a 512 Audio by warm audio. I’m not entirely sure if I’m a fan of the sound, but it could also be my recording space needing panels and some work. My budget would be around 500$ maybe 600$ for the microphone but that might be pushing it as I probably shouldn’t go for anything too crazy until it is required.

Third, any recommendations for audio panels? Nothing too expensive, although I’ll settle for expensive if it’s somewhat easy to set up. But I don’t mind taking the time and work if it’ll improve my sound.

Advice Feedback for voice acting

Hello everyone,

I, as you guessed, am a newbie to the VA/VO world.

I've done some research (shock horror) and posted my recordings to some va/vo sites but had nothing back (I'm not expecting instant success).

It's mostly me reading poems and monologues. My partner says I sound good but she's biased (lol)

The thing is I am looking for feedback on how I can improve. Anyone know whom to approach or where to send them to get constructive critiques?

Thank you kindly.

PAID work Birthday invitation (M $10-$15, English)

EDIT: Closed! Thank you for your interest!

Hello! I am looking to create a video invitation for my birthday party with the narration of my vampire character. No professional setup needed, looking for casual VAs. I’m seeking for a dramatic male voice with a strong british or transatlantic accent. For reference, see Lawrence Garte from Disco Elysium or Nostradamus from Something Rotten. The recording will be about 25 seconds long (40-50 words) and the payment will be done (preferably) via Kofi, but I can also do PayPal. Feel free to DM me!

Booth Related Sound attenuation options for an office

First things first, I am not a VO actor. My voice penetrates the walls of our office due to "lightweight" construction. My office neighbor regularly tells me how he listens to my phone and Teams conversations. Short of covering my walls in sound-deadening foam, is there anything I can use that would help control how much of my voice is heard by my neighbor? I saw this temporary sound booth on Amazon, and wondered if it was worth getting.

Thanks for your input!

Advice Including Comic/Manga Dubs in Resume?

Hey Everyone,

I've been working on my website, and am currently putting together my "resume" section. A good number of my current roles have been in dubbing over manga/comics, almost 50%. I also have some of my better work in this category and would also display some of the best examples from what is posted on youtube. Should I not do this? I understand dubs aren't exactly viewed in the most positive light, so I thought I'd get some feedback if possible. Should I categorize them differently.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Advice Accent advice!

Hi fellow artists! I typically do auditions in my standard accent but I want to challenge myself to audition for more character roles with an american accent to further my opportunities.

All constructive feedback is appreciated both with how I can make my accent better and my audio.

I don't currently have a home studio but I do have a good set up. I feel like I can hear my accent peeking through but I'd love an opinion to whether or not my performance was believable :)
