(Not a vent post!) I’ve been declined from projects a good amount of times and I know you shouldn’t get too attached to any audition or role, but UGH I was so confident about this one 😭
Wasn’t meant to be, I suppose!

Discussion What separates a DECENT voice actor from a GREAT voice actor

I'm still fairly new to the realm of voice acting. I started pursuing voice acting seriously just a couple years ago, and I'm far from what I'd call a 'professional'. I started in the realm of monster voice acting due to my background in metal vocals, but I've been expanding my territory into regular voice acting as of late.

It's during my regular voice acting recording that it dawned on me what really makes someone a great voice actor. I'm capable of making a line sound near professional quality. The emotion I put behind the line can be top tier, and when people hear it they're very impressed. But the thing is...most of those lines took me 30+ takes before it finally got to that point.

With professional voice acting where they're recording in a studio, they will generally have only a couple of takes to get a line right, due to the fact that they're generally paid by the hour. Thinking that, it made it finally click what separated a 'decent' voice actor from a 'great' voice actor.

A decent voice actor may be able to eventually produce a line quality enough to rival a great voice actor, but a great voice actor can produce that quality line right off the bat. Realizing that really humbled me. It made me realize that I really do have a ways to go as a voice actor yet. It makes me excited though, cause now I finally have a goal to aim towards!

PAID work [PAID €20-60] Looking for Female VA with a Valley Girl Accent for a Y2K/Bratz-Inspired Character in My Indie Game

Hey everyone!

I'm currently developing an indie game called Unemployed, a dark comedy unemployment simulator built in Unreal Engine 5, with a PS1-inspired art style. I'm the sole developer, and the game will be released on Steam.

I'm looking for a female voice actress to voice a character called Diamond, who hosts the game's wardrobe/dress-up screen. She helps the player pick outfits, explains some mechanics and occasionally makes fun of their fashion choices.

For her personality, I'm going for something reminiscent of Y2K and Bratz dolls. She's bubbly, energetic, a little sassy and occasionally passive-aggressive. Ideally, I'd love a Valley Girl accent, with that early 2000s mean-girl energy. She's not supposed to be outright mean, though, more like someone who's genuinely enthusiastic but a little judgemental without realising it.

Here's a quick breakdown:

  • Payment: €20-60 EUR flat rate (depending on terms).
  • Language: English, preferably with an American Valley Girl accent.
  • Script: 31 individual lines, approximately 272 spoken words.
  • Delivery: Ideally separate WAV files with reasonably clean audio.
  • Payment terms: 50% upfront once we've agreed to work together, and the remaining 50% upon delivery.
  • Usage: Commercial use in the game on Steam and related promotional material, such as trailers and social media.

You'll also be fully credited in the game, and you're more than welcome to use the recordings in your own portfolio or demo reel.

I've already got the full script written, including some notes on how I imagined the delivery. They're just suggestions, though, and I'd love for whoever voices her to have some fun with the character!

I'm happy to share some WIP screenshots and gameplay footage of the game too, so you can get an idea of what you're contributing to.

I know the payment isn't a massive amount, but I'm developing this entirely on my own and working with a pretty limited budget. I'm not expecting professional studio equipment or anything like that, just reasonably clean audio and someone who'd enjoy bringing the character to life.

If you're interested, feel free to leave a comment with some previous voice work or a demo reel!

Thanks for reading!

Advice Minor Update Regarding Last Weeks Post

Thanks again to everyone who shared their insights on my post last week. As the video covers, I did send the Sennheiser back before recording this, so I had to revert to my Blue Yeti. Not mentioned was the fact that I fed my audio into iMovie, if that matters. It will be a while before I can get my self-tape space treated for sound, but I will be sure to post another example of my changes.

Everyone was very helpful and encouraging. This is a great group to be a part of and I thank ya'll for the help/guidance.

PAID work [PAID] Male narrator wanted for duet romance audiobook — $50–$100 PFH, raw recording only

Seeking a male narrator for an approximately 4.5-hour romance audiobook.

Character: Male, 35, American accent. Confident/sexy delivery.

Format: Duet narration. You would record the MMC chapters and all male dialogue in the FMC chapters. I will record the corresponding female material.

Content: Adult romance with explicit sexual content and consensual BDSM themes. Applicants must be comfortable narrating adult material.

Audio requirements: Raw, unedited .wav files only. A separate audio engineer will handle cleanup, editing, mastering, and assembly.

Pay: $50–$100 PFH, depending on experience, for raw recording only. The rate reflects that no editing, mastering, or file assembly is required from the narrator.

Please DM me if you’re interested in auditioning!

Demo feedback How does this audio sound? I know the background sounds bad. Spoiler

Hello, I'm male, and I'm wondering if this sounds like an entitled rich girl in a murder mystery. I sped up the audio a little bit to make my voice sound more feminine, and I'm wondering if it works.

Booth Related Room divider with acoustic foam taped to the faces of it, would it work as a solid booth?

Currently a beginner voice actor of 2-3 months, and I'm moving out soon. So I need a new place for my "booth" (closet) WITHOUT construction (as the house is rented, not bought). I'm gonna have to live in the living room or something with a room divider (idk tbh). So I came up with this little thought, i'll take the room divider into a corner, throw a blanket or two above it, some lights, my equipment, and tape some acoustic foam (that i'll buy soon hopefully) to the inside of the room divider and boom! booth created!

Also no, the house isn't gonna have a walk-in closet as i dont live in the US, if it DID i wouldn't even have to ask this question lmao.

Would this work at all (For unprofessional roles)? Would it treat the room well? If not, what should I do in this situation?

(some requirements/restrictions, before you suggest them + reasons)

- Can't do ANY construction work whatsoever (House is rented temporarily, not bought.)
- Can't buy one of those really expensive amazon booths (expensive, lmao)
- Can't make a booth in a walk-in closet (Pretty much no house in my area has a walk-in closet)
- Must be large enough to stand in (Gets the energy in the acting)

Any and all help is well appreciated!
