Zoom r12 vs Boss BR80
Hey, I have a Zoom r4 and recently been playing with an old Korg D16 that I absolutely love. Even though the Korg D16 is a 90s machine it's incredible, it's just not portible enough for what I want it for. It's a somewhat big machine that needs to be connected all the time.
My use case is create new songs. So recording a simple idea over a rythm, finding a guitar or bass line, doing a solo on top of it. Trying to find structure. Full production could be on computer, but honestly, I'm at the computer all day, I love to forget about them and just use these little machines.
I've managed to record great stuff on the r4 and it's so portable, I really like it, but.....I can't edit anything, can't move anything around, can't even do a simple loop with it. It's strange for a multitrack device. The 32bit floating point thing is interesting, but honestly, I'm doing drafts, 16 bits is absolutely fine if I can have a way to monitor for peaks.
I was thinking about getting a zoom r12 or a Boss BR80 as a "r4 with editing capabilities". Does anyone have experience with those?
The Boss BR80 looks very "korg d16" to me with the virtual track system which if well implemented is great. But then when you need to move things around you need to rely on copy bar x from y to location z...Does that work fine on the boss?
Regarding the zoom r12? It looks more daw like which I'm not particularly fan of, but could be cool to move things around. But I'm left with some basic doubts like, for instance can I:
- select 4 bars and make it loop so I can play on top of it and try to find an interesting solo?
- once I delete a recording from the timeline is it gone forever or can I retrieve an old take not currently in use?
- what happens if I start recording on a track that already has some content there?
- regarding the rythms, can I set a rythm from bar x to y, then another from y to z?
Any other suggestion?
