I’m a first year eng student. Going into this, I knew it was going to be difficult. I come from a small town that had class sizes no larger than 15, and being thrown into massive lectures and not really knowing my teachers is really throwing me off. I failed my PHYS 110 midterm, and I just got an email regarding my low scores on my quizzes in MATH109. I’m smart, I know I can learn this material but I can’t figure out why learning has become so difficult for me. Everyone seems so ahead, half the eng students have taken at least intro courses to everything we’re doing, and I’ve never seen anything like it before and I’m learning it all from scratch. I don’t know what to do, i’m very lost right now. My dream for years has been to become an engineer, but maybe I’m not cut out for it? If anyone has been through something similar to this or has any advice for me at this time, I’d love to hear whatever you can tell me.

so i'm aiming to get a bsc in math but omfg csc 110 being one of the required courses might actually make me have to just change my direction entirely

i'm completely fine with all the math courses that i have to take but i genuinely CANNOT wrap my head around computer science at all. it's the only computer science class ill have to take but i am so genuinely sure i am going to fail. 56% on my first quiz and 23% on my second

like seriously help is there any alternative class i can take in place of csc110 i cant take it anymore

Basically what the title says. I’m SO TIRED of people not knowing when to shut up. It’s disrespectful to the prof + your peers if you talk ALL THE TIME during lectures.

I’m fine with people talking before the lectures start obviously, it’s also fine if they’re talking while the prof is explaining deadlines or some other thing that’s not the point of the lecture.

But when the prof is TEACHING THE MATERIAL please for the love of god shut up!!!! Most of us pay to listen to the professor, not you talking to your friends about your shitty relationship. If you want to talk to your friends so much that you talk during the whole lecture, step outside. (I’m not hating on whispering/chit chat if you don’t keep it going lol.)

I just hate how insensitive/socially unaware some people are. I also talk to my friends before/during lectures but I keep it minimal and WHISPER. I know there are people with adhd/noise sensitivity, and I don’t want to make the lecture harder to understand because of my talking. Is there anyone else who is experiencing this?? Please tell me I’m not alone.

there would be so much more room during rush hours if everyone took their bags off and put them by their feet / between their legs and nobody would get accidentally smacked or pushed around when people are moving around and exiting! it also will help prevent pickpocketing (which i've never seen happen but definitely has at some point)!!!

Least courses ever, but never ever been such exhausted having class! Tons of group assignments and midterms that have been continued for a month!!! Could not understand the reasons for being such formalism doing bunch of group projects within a month and there are also midterms happening at the same time! The faculty does not even allow to skip the class unless you're under extremely bad health condition. As a university student, how come students are not allowed to give themselves a break for any reason? Being energetic everyday to have classes is literally hard for me, I simply don't want to continue as I have no interest this the program's future career path.

Why the hell are so many people sitting at computers in the library and not using them?! The screen isn’t even on for most of them! Go sit literally anywhere else with your laptop and leave the library computers for people who actually need them and will use them.

Lost in Translation? Homer’s Odyssey and Catullus in Love

The translation of Greek and Latin texts has become a subject of social and mainstream media discourse following the release of Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey.  In particular, Emily Wilson’s translation of Homer’s Odyssey has (re)emerged as a lightning rod for controversy.  This interactive workshop will offer attendees an opportunity to compare select translations of Homer’s Odyssey and Catullus’ love poems and to consider the following questions:  What are the purposes of translation?  What factors shape different approaches to translation?  How do translators make ancient texts accessible to a modern readership?  What makes a translation successful?

Hello, I am an Alberta Student. I am currently interested in applying for engineering in Victoria, but im unsure as to whether or not I have the chance to make early admission. I have also heard of other universities (UBC, and some in Ontario) who give adjustments for Albertan students, but I'm not exactly sure if UVic does the same.
