I wanted to give a kind of cautionary tale so hopefully others don't fall into the same situation as me. I will go ahead and admit ahead of time that I am at least half at fault for my own situation, probably closer to 75-80% my fault, and also this is probably a very unique situation.
I am a former UCF staff engineer, I worked at a certain off-site field testing facility operated by UCF. In 2023 about a year after I started working there I applied to graduate school because I fell in love with the work we did at the site.
Initially the professor who would be my advisor, who was also involved with where I worked, had me apply to UCF graduate school under MAE because originally my background was in Aerospace Engineering. He had a really intriguing project involved with it and I was quickly accepted under MAE, but it wasn't directly related to the work we were doing day to day where I worked. However, that project ended up not really having a lot of funding associated and we couldn't even get the necessary software to start working on it.
I was more interested in Electro-Optics (more in line with what I did at my job) and that was also his primary field, so he "switched" me to MSEE Electro-Optics track. I then took all the classes necessary to fulfill the degree, and have gotten good grades the whole way through. Initially I was going to do the MSEE Electro-Optics with a thesis, but this summer I switched to non-thesis cause I recently moved out of state to work elsewhere in the field and thesis became pretty much impossible for me. So instead I took two final EO classes to hit the 30 credit hour requirement.
So we get to today, I am doing well in my final two classes and I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to graduate so I start talking with the graduate office cause I keep all these errors on MyUCF (which I pretty much never look at unless I'm paying tuition or signing up for class) when I try to apply to graduate. It turns out there's this Graduate Plan of Study thing that I had to fill out, so I did that after going back and forth with the EE grad office and them saying everything would get approved. Then after that form makes it through their office, they inform me I'm not in their college at all and that I need to reach out to the MAE office.
The MAE office knows who to contact so a big e-mail with a bunch of people cc'd forms. And it turns out the only way to remediate the situation is to re-apply to UCF, get re-admitted, and then petition for the 30 credit hours (which are all MSEE EO classes) to be valid.
So I've effectively completed the degree, but it's all in jeopardy now because this whole time I thought I was in MSEE EO but I never was in the first place. Up until now there was never even any indication to me that anything was wrong, I never got any holds on my account preventing me from signing up for classes, my former advisor even thought I was in MSEE EO and was telling me what classes to take. I'm even still listed on his website as an MSEE student!
I feel like it should just be a flag they can change on the backend, I've already done all the work, but atleast I hopefully have a path forward to graduate...
Anyways, moral of the story: If you're a graduate student make sure you have a plan of study in place early and do your due diligence if your plans change to make sure everything is in order. I couldn't tell there was anything wrong up until the very end and while I'm sure it'll all work out there's a non-zero chance all my time and money and effort will have been wasted.
