Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.
The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

some lurkers may recognize me based on my story. i just feel an urge to talk about my ubc experience.
this is a beautiful university, a nexus of opportunity and knowledge from diverse perspectives. i have loved every class ive taken… in theory.
i came here in 2022 with so much anxiety but a bit of hope and ambition. high school was very hard… from being outed to my parents to not understand why i could never focus or be very happy.
i got my diagnosis of major depressive disorder and GAD in 2024 after going through first and second year. i felt like each year was slipping through my fingers. i could not remember what i learned and i barely scraped by to passing sometimes and was constantly behind. i felt disappointed in myself as an international student who has received such an amazing opportunity which i felt i was squandering.
things only got worse post hospitalization and with my new meds. being an internat is hard and overwhelming and i was scared to navigate the medical system, but there was so much sunk-cost so i had to keep going.
i knew i wasn’t going to graduate on time, but i took summer courses to help. I failed one due to my depression. i was wasting my time in beautiful vancouver. fast forward to 2026, i had had fallen into substance abuse to make myself feel better and hide from my failures and fell harder after a intense breakup. school felt insurmountable, i was ashamed, and i could barely function. depression affects you physically too. you sleep too much at the wrong time of day, your vision blurs, your mind is foggy.
so i went home when the four years were up without a degree but just a few classes short, somehow.
i don’t know… im still trying to graduate. i just want those who are feeling ashamed and tired and overwhelmed to know that you’re not alone. vancouver and ubc can feel so foreign sometimes and you can feel so lonely. please reach out to people. talk to the CFA sooner rather than later. email your teachers even though you’re embarrassed. advisors want to help. i spent one day a year ago running between appointments trying to get into ubc therapy and begging for concessions. it was exhausting but needed to happen.
people talk about early alert or whatever it’s called but for real. don’t wait when you get that feeling- yknow the one.
Vancouver is beautiful and UBC is a gift. i wish i could’ve made more of it but im grateful for what i can remember and to have at least had a chance.
also shoot me a message, i’m a bit of a jack of all trades and a master of none but i can point you in the right direction.
Thank you everyone who makes this place as amazing as it is. yall are doing a great job and im so proud of you for showing up.

the midterm is on wednesday and idk how to study for this class. we’re allowed to have as many physical notes as we want but idk anything about the format of the exam (like is it more application based, definitions, short/long answer, or multiple choice?)
is making a bunch of physical notes enough or should i do flashcards? maybe redo old quizzes? there also isn’t any practice questions so idk what to do

Who is out to get me because whatever curse they casted is working. And i can't even ask for one of them to be moved because of the "three exams within 23hr 59min" rule its so stupid 😭😭😭 this should count as within 24hr

These two men in the photo just approached me and my friend. They claimed to be plumbers with their own business and wanted to take 2 minutes of our time to fill out a survey. The one in the black nike tech asked for our phone numbers and sent us the details. The one in the red nike tech took our phones and filled out what we thought was a survey. Once they left, most of our search history was gone, but we got an email saying that our Google Business profile was created. They linked our google accounts to a plumbing company and added photos and a description. To our knowledge this is all that they did, but we are not completely sure. Also above is a screenshot of what they sent to my phone number - this was information for them to set up the Google Business Profile. My friend and I were able to delete ourselves from the business, but I'm not too sure what else they did on our phone. They told us it was just a quick survey, then they clarified it as a review for their business, but it seems that everything they said was a lie and/or excuse. PLEASE BEWARE OF THESE TWO MEN. They look 19 and don't go to UBC (as per attire sake).

I live in Vanier and it’s lowk so inconvenient to go down there when I have close classes or want to study at ikb or whatever but it’s so expensiveeee

I won't say who to vote for. But I will say that it's probably best to think about what sort of final result within the realm of possibility in your specific district you want / don't want, and vote accordingly rather than listening to people who are super loyal to any party.

Taking PSYC 315 with Baron and our midterm is coming up in a few weeks. A bit stressed as to what to expect since the midterm is remote yet fully online but also closed-note. For students who have taken the course before, how hard is it? Is it lecture-heavy? Is the distance version harder than the in-person? Any tips?
If anyone wants to make a study group chat I'm down to join, as well.
Reminder to go and request your U-pass for next month! Midterm season is in full swing so a reminder to those who may have forgotten.

I was trying to go for a swim and I wasn't let in. Then a few minutes later there were like 10 cars in the bus loop and lifeguards running around outside. Anyone know what happened?
Hope everyone is ok...

Yesterday I walk by they're doing pick up window orders only so you have to order on phone. I look inside and there are full trash bags on the ground all over the place. Walked by again today and they're just closed, have they finally experienced the vermin invasion of '26?

In here basement at 10 am, we got:
2 dudes in love with each other's voices (u guys are gay in a non-derogatory way)
Janitor on the phone
Construction noises from somewhere close to music referenced right below:
Music playing from somewhere far away but its audible from my location (???)
Grown ass bureaucrats talking loudly in the halls (lock in moids...ruining my image here)
Girl clearing her throat every 30 seconds extremely loudly (foid moment)
Death metal on earbuds (no one cares if u like metal, u r not special twinnermanski)

I recently transferred from the Okanagan campus this year from engineering and looking to majoring in data science. I promised myself to take it chill this semester and get into the groove of things in the Vancouver campus before doing anything adventurous. So I didn’t sign up to clubs, and the only exec position I applied to rejected me.
Now looking back at the decision, I regret it so much. I also dropped a CPSC course because one, I failed the midterm, and two, turns out I didn’t need it. Now I’m here with three courses, and doing also pretty miserably in them too. My marks in engineering with six courses and a design team were honestly way more better than what I’m currently getting.
I look around to the friends I made this semester so far, and everyone’s either an exec, part of some Sauder association or managing their academics decently.
I feel like I’m doing not enough, and lowkey, feeling unmotivated to attend class or stay on campus anymore. I’m not even sure I want to stay in university anymore. I’m in a slump and I genuinely don’t know what to do besides waiting for the days to pass and hope things are better next semester. I find myself napping or doomscrolling nowadays.
I try to be realistic and understand other people are going through similar issues, but it’s hard coming from UBCO where you’re surrounded by your friends everyday to UBCV where you’ll maybe get to see someone once every 3 hours.
It’s honestly been quite a severe change in environment, and I’m not sure how to cope.

Why is the prof not answering a SINGLE question about the midterm less than a week before. He’s not giving out a single lecture either from the book nor answers to the practice midterms or whatever he posted.
Bro literally wants us ALL to fail.
