Megathread NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here!

Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Discussion Enchanted forest cleanup and picnic!!

Hello fellow UBC students and visitors! I’ve recently realized that the enchanted forest (aka totem park) is literally always covered in garbage and it’s really unfortunate given how UBC is known for their nature and forestry. That being said, I’m thinking of planning a community cleanup of the forest and want to know if people would be interested in doing this. If it happens, I’m thinking we can have a picnic afterwards and everyone chip in like $10 for food and drinks and make arts + crafts?

I’m only a first year student and don’t really know how to reach the community, so if you’re interested I’d really appreciate some help setting this up!

I feel like a failure

Although I don't know what my grades are yet, I know for sure that I did pretty badly on the first round of midterms I had for (chem 121 and psyc 101) I've been thinking about this for the past week, and I can't even sleep at night. If I do end up just barely passing with a 50%, and the prof curves the grades down, does that mean my grade could drop to a failing grade?

I honestly feel like I'm just going to fail in general. Everyone around me seems to be doing so well, but it's not like I'm not putting in the time to study. I started reviewing two weeks before each midterm, studying for around an hour per class everyday , and spent increasingly more time preparing as the midterms got closer. But somehow, I still fumble everything. Like, I'm just a fucking chud bro.

UBC Summer Abroad: Applying when you’re slightly below the GPA requirement

Hi everyone! I’m a UBC Arts student interested in applying to a university through the Go Global Summer Abroad program, but my cumulative average is 3 % below the host university’s GPA requirement.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Were you still considered for admission, or are these requirements usually strict?
I’m trying to figure out whether it’s worth applying, so I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences or any advice. Thank you!

Advice regarding transfering to UBCV from UofA

I'm currently in my first year doing a BA in economics at UofA. UBCV was my first choice, however I only got accepted for my second choice at UBCO. My plan is to apply this season to do econ or history (both in arts) at UBCV. This is really poorly structured but I have a couple questions.

•Do the different degrees (econ and history) have different admission likelihoods? Or are they the same since they are under the same faculty.

•Are university applicants treated the same as high school applicants?

•I've mostly heard of people transferring for their third year. Is there any benefits/downsides to doing so compared to transfering for my second year?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hey T.G., just found your cute wallet near the Botanical Garden. It has a bunch of cards and some money, I left it at Westbrook Community Centre, just confirm your name and date of birth and they'll return it to you.

Math 100 Midterm difficulty?

How hard were the Math 100 midterms in the past? I still have a lot of concepts to reteach myself and won't have time to redo all the remaining webworks + provided practice questions before exam day. I don't even know how useful these will be tbh. Low-key considering just taking the L or withdrawing and taking it in the summer when I'm (hopefully) in a better mental space.

PSA: You might be lonely because you treat human relationships like objects

Idk why this mindset is so common in our generation, but I see people at UBC stressing so much about "making friends" or "getting in a friend group" or "getting a date" that they forget what relationships are supposed to be.

Whether it's friendly, professional, or romantic, human relationships are not a one-and-done thing that you "obtain" and suddenly become happy. They require effort to develop and they fade when one or both people stop trying. If you're not taking a genuine interest in people (in a non-invasive way), not taking the time to make plans, not reciprocating, and generally not being the kind of person you want in your own life, it's not going to work out. Relationships should be a healthy addition to your life, not a cure for your problems.

Also: hygiene. Stop calling yourself "chopped" and wallowing in self-disrespect. Take a shower, groom yourself, and start working on your health.

Humour Return to UBC and the Great Rodent Cartel

It’s been more than a decade since I left UBC. I was genuinely excited to revisit campus this weekend and finally pick up the degree frame I forgot to buy over ten years ago.

My warm nostalgia was short-lived.

As I drove through campus, armies of fearless little monsters dominated the streets. One particularly bold individual even used the roof of my car as a public toilet. Reaching the spot was an athletic impossibility, forcing me to leave it there…….. fully aware it might become a high-speed projectile for someone’s windshield on the highway. Oh sh1t!…

For a brief, intrusive second, a primal impulse took over: floor the pedal, run these little devils over, and claim the red remains smeared on the pavement were just spilled McDonald’s ketchup. Or better yet, pin the whole hit-and-run on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving. Morally questionable? Absolutely. But an entirely human urge.

I was ready to pull into Canadian Tire, load up on poison pellets, and save the UBC administration the trouble of forming steering committees, ethics review boards, and oversight councils for an "eco-friendly safe squirrel euthanasia initiative." That whole bureaucratic circus would undoubtedly demand government research grants and take ten full years before a single decision was made. Sometimes direct citizen action feels entirely warranted.

Before heading to the cashier, though, I double-checked with Grok, only to learn that secondary poisoning would wipe out any birds of prey or scavengers eating the toxic carcasses.

“EXCELLENT, two animals with one stone,” I initially thought… until I envisioned dozens of crows raining down from the sky in a full-blown, Exorcist-style scene.

That level of carnage would undoubtedly traumatize the thin-skinned glass-fragile Gen Z students on campus, and with the province's healthcare system already in the toilet, local ERs couldn't handle the influx of psychological shock.

In the end, cold consumer logic prevailed. My premium Michelin performance tires deserved far better care than acting as rodent pest control, and a biblical crow fallout was best avoided. High-end rubber and free-market capitalism saved their pitiful existence.

All three cars belong to the same guy, the other two being a Ferrari SF90 XX Spider (silver) and Ferrari 296 Speciale. He was a Finance student at UBC and graduated in 2021. Crazy to see this lineup at the Iona building.

i had the flu this week, the newest appointment i could get with health services was this coming monday (aka tmr morning at 10am)
