Megathread NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here!

Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Confession midterm diss - Exact-Cockroach8528

UBC midterm season, this shit is a crime,

got six different deadlines and zero free time.

Tuition costs a fortune, but the teaching’s a joke,

my GPA’s on life support and my brain’s up in smoke.

Prof said “study smart,” but I’ve been grinding for days,

still on question number one, like a whole foreign phrase.

IKB all the time, fighting demons in the night,

got a Monster in my hand and my GPA losing a fight.

Canvas keeps attacking me, my sleep is MIA,

I’ve aged about ten years since the start of last May.

Need something to heal me,

something keeping me sane,

time to hit up Costco and forget all this pain.

UBC takes my money, got me fighting for my life,

Costco’s got Greek yogurt, making everything feel alright.

Professors give me deadlines,

Costco gives me deals,

one destroys my mental health,

the other helps me heal.

UBC wants my future, my sanity, and my soul,

but Costco sells me food in a bathtub-sized bowl.

So when I fail this midterm, don't ask if I'm fine,

I’ll be in the Costco food court with a yogurt tub nearby. :)

Thank you, I'll see myself out now

halloween is a miserable holiday for someone who goes to ubc with no friends

all of my friends (aquaintences) have things to do with people they consider more of a friend than me or have relationships. I keep studying and working to remove these thoughts from my head but man november 1st is going to suck. I just want to dress up as a unicorn and take pictures with people who like me. Anyways how’s everyones midterm season going

High school was one of the darkest chapters of my life. UBC helped me experience a better life and brighter future.

Having went to UBC and being an alumni, I want to say that I am in a happier place now and UBC helped me get there. I went to high school in Richmond, BC at Steveston London Secondary School.

UBC has been the best time of my life. I met supportive friends, and gained beautiful experiences.

I joined clubs, met people from across the world, and gained new perspectives.

High school was the darkest chapter of my life. During my years at high school, I experienced relentless, severe, and psychologically devastating bullying. At times, the experience felt dehumanizing and terrifying, and there were periods when simply going to school felt like entering an environment where I did not feel safe, respected, or protected.

What I experienced was not something I viewed as ordinary teasing or a normal part of growing up.

High school in Vancouver is 5 years long. And if you were bullied, you were stuck with those people for 5 years. Your only options is to change schools.

At UBC, I never faced any bullies.

There were times I did come across my former bullies at UBC, but I dodged them.

I just want to say that I LOVE UBC!!!!!

If anyone is interested in reading about it, here is my story:

Math 100 is Atrocious..

Beyond the midterm, beyond the cooked quiz, BEYOND the rubrics.. this class is hot shit.

The large seminars are worthless, the MLC isn't any help, compair is a waste of time, there's no direction about pre-readings or specific parts of the textbook that apply to the section we're doing, absolutely nothing.

I get that its consequence of high schools focusing on number dumping into a calculator rather than actually knowing the concepts but PLEASE why is there no organization in one of the most difficult first year courses??

The only helpful part of this course is the discussions, and that's only because I get to talk to other students - not profs or TA's.

SPEAKING of profs, I'm not gonna name drop, but why's mine confused on what course he's teaching?? Switches between clear writing and cursive, gets his own equations wrong, and murmurs so no one can hear wtf he's saying. I sit in the FRONT ROW and I'm hearing NOTHING??

Anyways super excited for the midterm 🥰

Extra food left over after an event, and I'd love for it to go to students! Bannock egg and tomato breakfast sandwiches and elk sausages from Salmon n' Bannock. Pickup on the 4th floor of the School of Population & Public Health building @ 1PM at the Human Early Learning Partnership (take the elevator to the 4th floor, and turn right after exiting the elevator).

EDIT: feel free to DM for more details

EDIT 2: More food available from Salmon n' Bannock from 1-2PM!! :)) Mostly only desserts left!!

EDIT 3: Unfortunately everything has been taken!!! Thank you everyone for supporting no food waste for our event!!!!

Confession Help me find this guy

guys pls help me find this guy 😭🙏🏻

I saw him at Body Energy Club on September 8 around 9 pm and I genuinely cannot stop thinking about him 😭

He had light brown skin, curly hair, an afro-ish look, and was fit/muscular. He was wearing a grey hoodie and shorts, and he was with another guy. He was ahead of me in the queue and got a purple smoothie 💜

I KNOW this is barely anything to go on but PLEASE 😭 if this sounds like you or you know who I'm talking about, help a girl out and make this reach him 🙏🏻😭

Discussion arts co op rejection advice

Hey everyone,
Just got my rejection email from UBC Arts Co-op today and honestly feeling pretty disappointed.
I’m a political science student (currently third yr) with around an 80% average, decent extracurriculars, and work experience. I made it to the second round and completed the writing assessment, but ultimately didn’t get accepted.
I’ve talked to a few other people who also got rejected, so I’m wondering how many others are in the same boat this year.
For anyone who’s been rejected from Arts Co-op before, what did you end up doing afterward? Were you still able to find internships or relevant summer jobs on your own?
I’m hoping to get some experience in government, policy, or the legal field next summer, but I’m honestly not too sure where to start without Co-op.
Also, does anyone know how competitive Arts Co-op actually is, or whether it’s possible to get feedback on your application?
Would really appreciate any advice or experiences from people who’ve been through this.

How is the sound insulation in Ponderosa Commons THIS bad?

I'm honestly losing my mind over the sound insulation in Ponderosa Commons.

I live in a shared two unit, and I can hear my roommate watching videos and making phone calls throughout the day. The worst part is that it's not just voices,I can hear low-frequency thuds and footsteps, and sometimes I can literally feel the bed vibrating when they're walking around.

The other night, I heard movement from the next room and genuinely thought there was an earthquake for a second. That's how bad the vibrations feel.

I'm a light sleeper, and even earplugs don't help much with the impact noises and vibrations. I know living with roommates means some level of noise is inevitable, but I honestly didn't expect to hear and feel so much of someone else's everyday activities through the walls.

I sometimes wonder if I'm developing misophonia or some kind of noise-related anxiety...

Discussion Psyc 324 exam scaling wtf??

After a terrible depressive episode, I went to my exam with 0 studying, and I guessed almost all of my answers.

Because the average was so cooked, the prof scaled up 15%, and now I have a passing grade of 51%

This is so weird lmao

Discussion These boyfriend and girlfriend posts are really annoying

Post image
232 Upvotes

Bro, this is so annoying. Where are the UBC photography posts? None of those are up anymore. No one’s posting those anymore. All I see is this like dating stuff over and over and over and over again. It’s getting a bit annoying. If you need someone to date at this point, man, they should just start a club called UBC Dating Club or something. But the whole point is asking or making these stories on Reddit is not going to lead to you finding your love. The only way you’re going to find it is I don’t know because I don’t have any love in my life either, but it’s definitely not on UBC Reddit, and that is clear.
