Academics Professor using AI generated infographics for lecture slides

Almost every one of the lecture slides look like this now.... just 20 or so pages of this, I know the prof and trust that the info is probably all accurate, but I'm just so tired of this crap man, its unavoidable and just depressing. I have no idea what to even do about it

Academics New Winter 2027 course: FIN 488 Empirical Finance (Python + real trading data, no prior coding experience needed). I’m the instructor, ask me anything

Hi r/uAlberta,

I'm Saad. I joined the UofA this July, and I'll be teaching a new finance course this winter, FIN 488: Empirical Finance. The mods kindly okayed this post. Since the course is new and has no student reviews yet, I'd rather answer your questions directly.

What really happens after you tap "buy" on a trading app?

That's the question this course is built around. We'll look at how modern markets work at the level of individual trades: how orders are routed and executed across exchanges and trading platforms, how prices form, and how market design and technology shape the prices investors actually receive (this field is called market microstructure).

What we'll learn

  • How transaction costs are measured, and why the price you see isn't always the price you get
  • How markets, particularly equity markets, are designed, and why design choices matter
  • How to measure liquidity and price impact using real trades and quotes
  • How to extract meaningful signals from high-frequency market data

Real data, real tools

You'll work hands-on with large datasets used by researchers, industry professionals, and regulators, including high-frequency TAQ trade and quote data, OptionMetrics, and the SEC's MIDAS. The main text is Foucault, Pagano & Röell's Market Liquidity, which is free online through the UofA library, so buying a copy is optional.

You don't need to know how to code

We'll learn Python from scratch. If you've never written a line of code, that's fine, because the course is designed for finance students, not CS students. By the end, you'll be able to load, clean, and analyze real market data yourself.

Who it's for

  • Students interested in working on trading desks, at broker-dealer firms, or in market regulation
  • Anyone who wants practical experience with real-world financial data
  • Anyone who's wanted to learn data analysis in Python but never had a good reason to

Details

  • Sections: B02 (Mon/Wed 9:00–10:20) or B03 (Mon/Wed 10:30–11:50)
  • Prerequisite: FIN 301 or consent of the Department
  • Assessment: Individual assignments, a group assignment, and a final exam (there will be no midterm)

Ask me anything in the comments about the course. I'll be checking in and answering whenever I can.

Thanks!

Saad

Rants Does no one understand personal space anymore?

Seriously, why are people literally walking 2 inches away from others when it’s not a packed hall. Especially in such wide open spaces like the business atrium, why are people brushing against tables when there’s so much space?

Both faculty, staff and students too, I’ve had so many times where people have either hit or nearly hit the table I’m sitting at or knock things off even when walking completely alone. You have so much space, and you don’t need to walk so close. Especially those with the ridiculously huge backpacks or staff with carts holy shit get a clue and spacial awareness.

Obviously I understand when it’s between classes and things are busy, or in more cramped spaces or in classes or even when 2 people are passing by each other. Or even accidents etc. But why are we including the occupied spaces as part of the walk way? If you have a drivers license, how many times are we hitting the curb, queen?

But this shit happens at as early as 7:30am. There’s not any real traffic so why tf are we so close??? Especially when some of yall don’t shower, that’s a drive by biological attack.

Academics Chance prof inputted wrong midterm grade

Hi, so I got a midterm grade for a course and I was fairly confident I did decently well and I got a significantly lower grade that I expected. Idk if I’m in shock or denial but I was confident I did significantly better than what I got, as I was fairly confident I got most of the questions right as it was similar to the practice exam postedThe prof inputted the grades on a spreadsheet based on ID number. I’m just so lost and confused as to it, and there’s a chance he made a mistake.

Someone left their Ice Capp on the floor… (AND YES IT WAS UNATTENDED) Mind you there’s a garbage literally two steps away. Please pick up after yourself omg. (I tried to clean as best as I could with tissues and water 😕)

Question Can anyone else not see their final exam schedule?

Under the schedule tab fall 2026 isn’t even an option. If I go to the tentative exam schedule tab and select fall 2026 all of my classes say not yet available… one of my profs mentioned the date and time of our exam so that makes me think that other people have access to it, so why don’t I?

Just wondering if this is happening to anyone else, I’ve just submitted a ticket with student services

Admissions MSc applicants who got accepted — could you share your stats and advice?

Hello everyone!

I'm planning to apply for a master's program for comp. Science and wanted to get an idea of the profiles of students who have been accepted.

A little about my background:

- GPA: Around 3.6

- 3 research experiences and 1 publication

- 4 technical work/internship experiences

- A university research award

- Currently studying at a university ranked in the QS Top 200

- My research interests align closely with those of several professors at the university.

I would really appreciate it if accepted students could share their profiles, especially their GPA, research experience, and publications.

Also, based on my profile, Do you have any advice on how I could strengthen it?

Thank you in advance!

Question Hello Uni Students!!

Can I ask what merch you would ACTUALLY buy from your schools program department or students' association?

Do y'all prefer clothing with big department branding on it, or smaller branding? Would you want to buy totes? water bottles? what about stickers or temporary tattoos?

Give me all of your thoughts!!!

Academics Failing Math 217 Midterm

I am a 2nd-year student under BS Major in Math. For Fall and Winter last year, I took the regular Calculus streams. I also took Math 216 in Winter and got an A-. This gave me the courage to try honor Calculus 3. I am loving the course because it shows me how Calculus is constructed and extended to higher dimensions—not simply how it is used, but then Midterm came. I got 44%, which is worth 25% of the total grade. The finals is 60%, and I am really scared I cannot pull it off. I feel bad with my choice of action. Perhaps, I should have stayed where I belong and should have taken the regular Calc 3instead. I am so sorry for the negative vibes, but I just feel bad to have realized I am not good at something I have always loved and wanted.

Lost and Found Gold Ladies Watch Found

• Upvotes

I did an online exam on Tuesday (October 20th) at 9am in 3-106 Education North ( The Learning Assessment Centre)

I'm pretty sure someone accidentally dropped their watch into my bag. Since this location was testing multiple exams from many different classes (econ, paleo, etc.) I'm just putting this out here as well.

If you think this might be your watch, please PM me directly.

Thank you.

Campus Life Anyone know of any local businesses that would be down to sponsor a student club's bake sale?

• Upvotes

Please let me know!

If you want to directly contact them, feel free to hit them up on their IG rtp_uofa or email [rtp.uofa@gmail.com](mailto:rtp.uofa@gmail.com)

They're a UofA chapter for the global organization Right To Play.

Not only will they help fundraise for a cause but they will be featured on the IG page as well and students buying baked goods will know of them (exposure + potential future customers!).

Question HELP!! Am I cooked in my language course??

I don’t wanna say which language I’m in because it’s not a popular course and I don’t want to get called out 😭- it’s an ancient language course. I got a 60 on my first midterm and I’m not horribly upset but I definitely feel the regret of not keeping up with it hard enough. My other classes require around 200 pages of reading a week all together so I end up prioritizing those mostly. I have not been keeping up with the vocabulary and I feel it hard. I have flashcards but I really don’t practice them and I have gotten up to 300 cards now.
I’ve been trying to work on getting the grammar down but there’s always more to learn. It feels like I would have to do at least 2 hours a day on only vocab just to catch up and maintain progress. I really want to do this course and I have 102 next sem (a continuation) but I am worried that I won’t be able to catch up in time. I’m used to classes that you can cram for and I am realizing my mistakes with how I’m studying and I’m going to switch it up. Do you think it’s too late for me???

Also I talked to prof in office hours a few times and got some help with the concepts that I was struggling with. I also told him my situation and he told me to just keep up with it daily. He said it’s hard to catch up when you haven’t been on top of it which makes me feel pessimistic 😭.

Anyone else experience something similar???

I appreciate any help I can get.
