Fan Made Barry fans, i need your help
After watching Lanterns, I've come up with a tv pilot concept for the Flash starring Barry Allen. I have written an outline for the pilot, but I'm struggling to sort through my jumbled ideas. Mainly because it's late and I'm tired.
I really just want to gauge if this is something that fellow Barry Allen fans would like. I tried to make this version of Barry unique, like a blend between Silver Age and New 52, but with a bit of a modern take.
I don't want this to end up being copaganda because, as we know, ACAB. To quell this worry, I made Barry have a checks-and-balances mindset when working. He's mainly at the CCPD because of his adoptive father and uses the Jay Garrick comics to cope with how rough it is.
Specifically because it's something I've been through, I may have made it so Darryl Frye isn't... the best adoptive father? I did my best to fit this in with the theme of the episode.
There will be 8 episodes. The first major villain is Pied Piper. Piper will transition Barry into breaking the sound barrier partway through. For now, he's going to be slower than sound and bullets. I want the speed to feel genuinely earned and consistent across episodes.
Episode 1: A lightning strike in the crime lab grants Barry Allen super speed while allowing crooked cops to dodge due process when catching a car thief. Barry won't let that slide.
Now, the rest of this I wrote in a hurry during my commute. Be warned of its sloppiness. It's not final. I have writer's block and need help sorting this through so I can map the beats better.
• Young Barry coping with bullies by reading comics, seeing his parents in Jay and Joan Garrick.
• Adult Barry reading comics in his lab dealing with teasing from cops and criticism over standing up for protocol. He reads an excerpt about how sometimes all you can do is keep the bad guys from doing more harm.
• Introduction to the case of a car thief stealing from galas and committing bank robberies in them, along with Barry doing forensic work and overhearing Iris questioning people for her story.
• Barry and Iris talk about the case, but Barry is intentionally vague to give her clues without revealing anything. Then, they make sure they're still on for dinner and depart with a goodbye kiss.
• At the lab, Barry analyzes the evidence when a cop comes in trying to get him to skew the evidence because he's sure he knows who it is. Barry tries holding it together and tells him to buzz off.
• Barry sorts chemicals on the shelf to calm down when lightning strikes him, dousing him in those chemicals. He starts vibrating and emanating golden static. Barry uses the emergency shower.
• That corrupt cop comes in after hearing the thunder, as does Captain Frye. The cop is more worried about the evidence being destroyed than Barry's wellbeing. But then the cop reframes it as being able to get the criminal in trouble for destruction of evidence. Captain Frye says, "whatever will get that bastard off the streets."
• Barry tries standing up to Frye by telling him how immoral that is, that they don't have all the details. Frye says to leave the details to the court, and yells at Barry to clean up the mess he made-- knowing full well it wasn't Barry's fault.
• Flashback to Barry in Frye's home trying to use the landline to call his dad, but partway through the call, Frye comes in and breaks the phone saying he's not allowed to talk to criminals, and tells him to clean up the mess he made and to pull weeds to pay for the phone Frye claims Barry broke.
• Barry mops up the lab. His hand starts to shake and vibrate, and on his next mop stroke, he accidentally flings the mop across the room. He takes a deep breath, mopping slower.
• After work, Barry chases down the bus he's late for. But he notices his legs start moving faster, propelling him past the bus. He has to scrape to a halt, stumbling and scraping himself. His shoes are all melted, his clothes ripped, his skin all scraped up. He rushes to get out of sight, where he reacts to his newfound abilities.
• Barry gets back to his apartment to change, take a proper shower, and eat. He ends up eating two filling meals before getting a call. It's Iris. He's late for their date at the diner. Barry apologizes, saying he got struck by lightning at work. She's like, "Oh my god, are you ok? Where are you?" Barry says he's fine, he's at his apartment fixing himself up. Iris offers to go there, but Barry says he needs to run this off. Iris says he should rest, but Barry insists he's fine.
NOTE: this is around the time I gave up writing coherently. Good luck.
So Barry steps out to the ground floor, stretching. He prepares, starting a light jog. He jolts forward, but stabilizes a steady speed. He steadily increases speed to match traffic around him. Onlookers are shocked at Barry's speed. Barry slows for a turn, then keeps running. He gets more confident with it, running faster-- more like 60 mph. Then, he lets himself glide into a wide turn-- it's a rough one, scraping the rubber of his shoes and his palms. But he keeps running and his hand heals. He makes it to the diner, where he focuses all his energy onto coming to a stop. He notices that his shoes didn't even get scuffed because he put so much focus into it. He takes off the hoodie and dolls himself up in his phone camera before entering.
Iris runs up to him, hugging him and checking him for wounds. Barry says he's fine, he barely got struck, he just had a lot of chemicals to clean up. She took the liberty of ordering his favorite order already. He thanks her, and they hold hands across the table. He's eating pretty fast, and she asks if he's really alright. Usually he's the slowest eater alive. Slowest everything, in fact. He apologizes, saying it took a lot out of him. Iris moves to sit next to him and playfully nudges him. She says she's glad he's alright. They hold each other, and Barry tells Iris he's sorry for scaring her. She tells him she's got nerves of steel. Barry agrees, kissing the top of her head.
Barry and Iris walk to the bus stop. Iris starts venting about her boss showing favoritism to a reporter who is chasing the flashy stories like the Rathaway's cutting their son off inheritance instead of the ones that dig deep and reveal truths like the city cutting benefits to low income households. Barry listens, encouraging her to do what she does best and provide a voice for the silenced. She compares that to Barry when they first met at the crime scene and those idiot cops were picking on him. Except she couldn't get Barry to talk about the case for the life of her.
Then, a getaway car swerves onto the street, nearly bumping the curb they're on. Then, a cop car jumps the curb, and Barry has to act fast to pull both himself and Iris out of danger. The cop keeps driving like it's nothing, racing after the getaway car. Barry asks Iris if she's okay, and she nods. She thought that was exciting and is scrambling to get a picture before the cars can turn. She barely gets the corner of the getaway car, but the cop car's license is fully visible. Barry says she should report on that so people are more aware of the reckless endangerment cops bring. Barry compliments her photography skills.
When Barry and Iris get back to Barry's apartment, Iris offers to stay the night to make sure he's okay. He gets out the slippers and pj's he keeps for her there and tells her where to find all her toiletries he has in travel size in the bathroom cabinet.
Barry and Iris fall asleep in bed together. Barry's reading Flash comics, wondering if this all a dream. When Barry wakes up, Iris is already out of bed. He checks the time. It's 6am. Iris comes in with a tray of breakfast for them to share. Barry's all like, "Aw, you didn't have to... really..." and nibbles the burnt toast. She shows him the article she's written. Apparently, she's been up since 4am writing and doing research. Barry is impressed, reading it over. He discovers that he can accelerate his reading speed, but it gives him a mild headache. Then, Iris props her phone up so they can watch tv. She asks what he wants to watch, and he says her favorite show. She smiles at him and puts it on, getting excited to talk about it through the episode. Barry's eating slow again. Iris is relieved.
Cut to the criminal at a tech presentation event distracting the cops with a rigged speaker playing an explosion sound. Then, the criminal steals a car and drives off.
At work, Barry is filing the incident report, but Captain Frye comes in to have a talk with him. Because he's made a mess in the lab and threatened to ruin the reputation of multiple officers, Frye is firing him. Barry stands up saying that it was a workplace accident and he has grounds to sue, but he can't do that to family. Barry keeps detailed evidence of everything that goes on here. Frye is close to screaming, but sees Barry has his phone recording this interaction and shuts up quick and takes it back. Frye now tries to get Barry to give him his phone, but Barry plays a little game of keep away and tells him he's not his dad. Frye gives up. Barry can stay. But before Frye can fully walk away, he turns to tell Barry that if he keeps this up, bad people like Barry's father will walk. The system is flawed. Barry says, "It'll stay flawed if you keep abusing it instead of advocating for a better system." Frye tells a story about Barry "misbehaving" as a kid and uses that story to belittle him, then storms out.
Barry sits analyzing the evidence from that corrupt cop's case. We get to see his forensic work in action, and then we get to see him look back at his mother's murder case. Barry's hand starts to vibrate the more upset he becomes, till he has a light bulb moment. Barry has a better way to help people. He starts sketching a Flash costume for himself with the Flash comics as reference.
Cut to the getaway driver racing off from a bank. The getaway driver swaps vehicles and picks up groceries from local vendors. In another new vehicle, the criminal arrives at a trailer park. Everyone comes out all cheery saying the millionaire's back! The criminal hands out groceries, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and tools to repair the generator. Everyone's happy and grateful, and one of the old ladies brings out her pet rat to say hi to the criminal. He gives them money for their medication, wishes them well, and heads off. While driving, his ears start ringing and he gets dizzy, swerving off the road. He's able to hit the brakes, but the car rolls into a ditch, and he slams his head against the steering wheel. He scrambles in his bag for his medication and adjusts his hearing aids.
End of Episode 1
This is what I have so far. I'll definitely refine it and trim the XS later, but for now I'm sticking to my "write everything I think of" mentality. I know it's messy.
So... if you read that whole thing, I'd genuinely like to hear your notes. Where can I improve? How are my characterizations?
Can't wait to hear your thoughts. This is my first time sharing even an outline of my writing with anyone other than close friends and my ma, so I'm feeling kinda vulnerable. Don't hold back. I need to get used to constructive criticism if I want to improve. insert cartoon gulp sound effect
