Discussion The Talisman

Does anyone else find this book to be just not very good? I find it to be plodding and dull. I'm 729 pages in but I'm struggling to actually finish it.

"What is our deadline?"

"Right here and now!"

"I am putting you on a PIP. Do ye ken PIP?"

"Ken?"

"Aye. Aye. A PIP. Ye have forgotten the face of your father."

"We finished the TPS report."

"Thankee-sai. Ye have written it true."

Spoilers I finished Carrie and Im so mad lol.

Halfway through I thought "since Flanagan never misses, he should adapt The Shining next."

Now I just picture Katie Segel's character showing up to the overlook with a hair dryer and thawing out Jack Torrance to recruit him.

I so wish they didn't hijack Carrie at the conclusion. Im genuinely baffled at the lack of disappointment from fans. I enjoyed ALL season but this finale.

I was actually excited with just about every liberty, even the institute-like accomplices, but Carrie's pseudo-possession, Chris's last minute apology, Margaret White SURVIVING the house collapse? C'mon yall. It all feels so "second season incoming" and that undermines the entire point of what Carrie is. I feel as pissed as at the end of Halloween 2018 when Laurie leaves Michael to burn lol.

In defense of the show its my mistake for thinking it was a limited series, but man. Narrative suffering for the sake of longevity. Its unfortunate.

So thanks for letting me vent I guess. Im going to start the Dark Tower audiobooks now because I was saving them for later in life but now scared shitless so gonna knock them out.

Edit: thats a lot of comments. Gonna read them tonight!

Apologies but Im gonna shill here: If youre looking for a small, growing horror channel, itd be cool if you checked out Carnage Candy! Im the bald one: https://youtube.com/@carnagecandytv?si=Tmyf15mQKuRj8EnJ

Discussion The Changes They Made to the 2026 Adaptation of Carrie Ruined the Point of the Original Story Spoiler

Honestly, I am so annoyed by what they did to the 2026 version of Carrie because they completely ruined the point of the entire story. The original plot has one clear, brutal lesson: don't abuse and bully people, because if you push them too far, they will snap and destroy you. It’s supposed to be a tragedy about a breaking point. But adding Emaline and having her possess Carrie at the end ruins everything. Suddenly, the message isn't about cruelty having consequences anymore. It turns into a weird and confused plot where a crazy friend swoops in to handle the revenge for her, completely watering down the original cautionary tale.

What makes it even more frustrating is how they completely botched Carrie's character. In this version, she is way too overly kind and helplessly dependent on everyone else. After her bullies humiliate her and break her down completely, it makes zero sense that she wouldn't have the guts to stand up and unleash her own wrath. Instead of getting her powerful, independent moment of payback, she has to rely on Emaline to do the heavy lifting for her. They robbed Carrie of any real character development and turned her into a bystander in her own story by making that change. Out of all the Carrie adaptations out there, this one is easily the worst in my opinion.

Discussion Updated SK Tier Rankings

Warning: Will ruffle some feathers

Background: 3.5 years into my King journey. He is my favorite author and the joy i have found from reading has been life changing. Plan to read many more, including finishing the Dark Tower series (just wrapped up Wolves of the Calla).

Surprising Takeaways: Didn't expect Wolves to disappoint me so much. Still committed to the series and love the characters.

Nothing below the "Great" tier gave me that feeling of being completely immersed on what im reading and hitting that flow state of pure joy/excitement. W&G got there in the 2nd half and some of the short stories did as well (Langoliers, Jaunt, Raft).

While the "Good tier" was enjoyable, it didnt match the pure euphoria of everything above it.

Everything "Average" and below was a slog for me to get through. Rose Madder had potential but fell off hard at the end. Did not enjoy 11/22/63. Im not interested in that portion of history and found it very boring outside of the beginning and end.

What are your thoughts on my list? What changes would you make?

Discussion OWTT Inconsistency?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Censored a spoiler for the original Talisman, if that's necessary. As a note I have also finished OWTT.

But my fellow Talisman fans, what is this? Thayer was in Springfield Illinois, not Indiana, correct? or was it maybe originally Indiana in the original printing? Because Springfield is uh...not super close to the Illinois / Indiana state line.

Also I believe in OWTT Jack mentions Sunlight home being in Muncie Indiana, but that's not correct either, since Morgan was on a flight into Muncie (Imagine flying to Muncie lol) and Sunlight left to go get him, it was mentioned it was a significant drive. I can't recall the name of the town it was near off the top of my head but it was a real town south and west of Kokomo, IN. (I THINK it was Veedersburg?). I even mapped it and saw it was like a 2 hour drive to Muncie. I'm so type A about this because as a Hoosier, the fact that so much of Talisman (or at least Sunlight Home) took place in Indiana is cool to me. The only other big shoutout Indiana gets in King World is Trash Man (Stand) being from Terre Haute (which tracks, honestly).

I kept waiting to the end of the book to see if it was a 'Jack is misremembering this for plot reasons' kind of thing. He was not.

I loved OWTT, and this isn't a serious issue but I just wondered if anyone else noticed. I may not have had I not re-read Talisman earlier this year in prep. I'm taking this way too seriously.

My SK Tierlist (So Far)

Post image

I haven't read a ton of Stephen King yet, but I've been reading his books on and off for the last 15ish years. Some of these I haven't read in a while, but I went over this tierlist a few times and I think it's pretty accurate to how I felt about each book.

What Is "The Institute" Like?

I've owned it for years and never got round to reading it. I've re-read others before getting to that (currently doing Misery again). I never hear much talk about it and its one of few Kings I know very little about.

Are the Black Hotel, the Black House, and the Dark Tower all the same place/thing? Is the Talisman found somewhere in the Dark Tower series? I'm about to finish The Talisman. I've read the DT series, but it's been many years.

Misery on Audible

Post image
0 Upvotes

Just picked up Misery on Audible and chapter 1 is only 19 seconds long? It's also like a slow motion or the narrator saying "ummmmber one. You're number one. These sounds, even in the haze" and then moves onto chapter 2 which begins with "but sometimes the sounds like a pain faded, and there was only the haze...".

I don't have the print version available, is this correct or do I have a glitched audiobook? I tried deleting the download, clearing the cache and redownloading it but it's the same regardless.

Sometimes I think...

For all the new constant readers, that are just trying to hard to figure out what the books they are reading fit in where...please read the Reddit. We are All Constant Readers Here...we know our books by Stephen King.

Yes I know its annoying, its like read the freaking Reddit.

Where does this book fit in The Dark Tower Series, (because yes all of us Constant Readers love this series) Should I read Insomnia first? What about Talisman or Black House?

Always read what you want. It does not matter where you start..you find us all together at the end. Though really don't start Dark Tower in the middle

We are all in this Reddit together...constant readers. We all know what we like. I love "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" and BTW i hate baseball.

I love Tommyknockers, and "IT" and hated Dreamcatcher and I did not like Never Flinch

I would like to say...can we just sit back and enjoy the man who wrote the books that enabled us to take bit of time during our day...our night to escape for awhile...one night..or day...to just go "hey...i just wanna be scared for a night"

We all different Constant Reader...whether you been there since the 70's ...or just realizing now, how phenomenal Stephen King is.

Thank you Stephen King

I love this book cover for It

Post image

It’s not much, but there is just something so atmospheric and unsettling about this cover that I love and nails down the tone of the book.

Even though I don’t particularly think It needs a remake, this cover makes me want a movie with an eerie vibe like this cover.

Something about that kid running with balloons along with the sky is just unsettling to me and I don’t know how to properly explain it.

Genuinely, why do people act like having Carrie being portrayed a certain way is out of the question?

I know there has been thousands of posts about this and that the show has already is already out, but any time I see someone bring a topic about a fat, ugly, etc. Carrie up, people push back hard with arguments such as Carrie was "70s fat," or she was never ugly and just weird, or plenty of pretty girls get bullied (which I am well aware of).

I don't get it because...

  1. Carrie has always been played by pretty/average and skinny actresses who were done up to be "ugly," "plain," or "strange-looking." Pretty/skinny girls have seen plenty of representation through this character already. I don't see the harm in letting young girls who have been bullied for a particular reason have a Carrie of their own for once.
  2. Carrie is a fictional character, meaning she is left up for the reader to interpret. King said he intentionally left her vague so that those who do relate to her could see themselves in her, so how are we supposed to truly know whether she is supposed to be this or that? The book jumps from describing her as a "frog among swans" with bovine features to pretty at the prom by Tommy, which both have been cherry-picked to death by people arguing from both sides.

Maybe I'm just adding fuel to a tired debate, but oh well.

Theory sometimes i think the monster is just there to expose what was already broken

in several king stories, removing the supernatural threat wouldn't make the setting peaceful. it would just remove the excuse people have for showing their worst sides

take away the monster, and you can still have cruelty, paranoia, power struggles, scapegoating, and people deciding that someone else deserves whatever happens to them

the supernatural element gives those things a shape. it makes the invisible parts of a community impossible to ignore.

this isn't true of every king novel, obviously, but it changes how some of his horror works. the creature becomes less of the central problem and more like a spotlight

which king book would change the least if you removed its supernatural element and left the human behavior untouched?

Modern day Christine

• Upvotes

My husband and I just finished the Carrie series and started chatting about other remakes that could be, and started debating on a remake of Christine.

Now the original car was a '58 Plymouth Fury and the movie was released in '83, making the car 25 years old. If created in 2026 what would Christine's equivalent be?

Hubby is saying a PT Cruiser and I'm not sure how I feel about that. 😂
