Advice Anyone else feel tired all day but wide awake when it's time to sleep?

I have been dealing with this weird cycle where I'm tired during the day but once I get in bed my brain decides it's time to think about everything.

I've been trying to cut back on caffeine later in the day but I still struggle to wind down at night.

Curious what you guys do to switch your brain off before bed. Do sleep mints or other stuff help or is fixing your routine the only way?

Dreams & nightmares Is this just a nightmare?

Hello this is my first time posting here

On saturday morning, I was using my old phone and I even introduced its password(just how did i remember?!), I was thinking ‘I should get up now’ but I just couldn’t. I insisted and insisted my body to get up and when i did that, my legs felt so heavy but I still tried to reach the door. Here comes the strange loop part, just when I try to open it I find myself lying on bed again. This action was repeated many times and I gave up. I started thinking I might be in a dream.

Yeah lel I was indeed dreaming. But I wanted to wake up soon!!! that’s why i wanted to get out of my bedroom!!

I rarely have dreams and when I do they are mostly nightmares and I’m aware it is a dream, that it is not reality. When I reach this conclusion is when I usually wake up but not this time 😭 Strangely enough, I could see my blurry surroundings (i use glasses but wasn’t wearing them) it was my exact bedroom. I was wondering if I died or if i was having a so called sleep paralysis, it also came to my mind if I should sleep in my dream and when I woke up it would all return to normal. However, I found it dangerous...Double sleep?!?! What if it makes waking up harder?!

Then I tried to move my body again and I saw I didn’t have my pajamas pants on 🗿 and I was like ‘Yo why am I naked’ That’s when I FINALLY wake up. It was almost 1PM… Scary experience, stupid brain at least let me be trapped in a good dream😭

Anyway the password in the dream to my old phone was right…I haven’t used it for years lel

Yesterday night I couldn’t really sleep, I closed my eyes for 1-2 hours but nothing. Then I think I slept for a few hours??? I don’t remember being awake but I don’t feel that I got a rest. I guess my whole body got scared…I have a slight headache but that’s another problem of mine🥲

I usually sleep 7-8 hours. I don’t even consume a lot of caffeine( Honestly, it makes me sleepier). I never feel refreshed after sleeping no matter how many hours I get of sleep, even if it’s 11 or 5 hours. I don’t feel tired but I know I didn’t get a good rest.

Does anyone have tips to stop this or nightmares in general? Or falling asleep without waking up in the middle of the night? Anything is welcome🥲 I don’t want to let it happen often 🥲

Advice What could be wrong w me

I’m 23 F. I take Prozac 30mg, iron 65mg, Adderall ir 30mg, seroquel 75mg, ambien 7.5mg.

I am 5’7 165lbs

I have POTs, BED, borderline, anxiety, depression, tmj, bruxism, panic disorder, OCD, insomnia, ADD/ADHD, chronic migraines, deviated septum, pmdd, fatty liver disease, low iron saturation, fatigue, hypermoblity, high LDL but the “good cholesterol” evens it out? Idk, and ibs c. honestly prob more I am forgetting about rn.

Possible DX that I have appointments to be tested for : sleep apena, endometriosis PCOS

I DO NOT SMOKE NOR DRINK.
HX OF ASTHMA BUT NOT ANYMORE.

I got wrongly DX with bipolar 2 in 2024 and the meds they gave me gave me like some severe reaction and k developed insomnia from it. I do have symptom of sleep apnea and I’m getting a sleep test soon. I’ve been on ambien and seroquel for a while now. I currently do 75mg seroquel and 7.5 ambien. I’ll take 5mg of ambien wait 30mins then take 2.5.

I tried getting off of it and the withdrawals are so bad that I get intense symptoms if I only take seroquel at night

My symptoms:
-fatigue during the day
-weakness
-racing heart and palpitations as I’m trying to fall asleep
-jolting awake when trying to sleep
- feeling like I’m hallucinating/ having some flashing lights
-sweating
-panic
Etc.

through the day I’ll get
-tired
-dizzy
-extremely weak (it feels impossible to fully move without extreme effort)
-unable to drive
-feeling of passing out
-half asleep on 30mg of Adderall and Prozac and iron
-confusion
-memory issues
-unable to focus
- and weight gain
-constipation

I’ve had cardiac testing done it’s normal, blood work is all normal, mri is normal, ct is normal, 50+ er visits in the past 3 years for multiple issues are somewhat resolved, neurologist says I’m good

I tired in the psychward to take higher dosages of seroquel with 2.5 of ambien but I felt like I couldn’t breathe/ it was hard to get my body to breathe.

I tried going without the ambien in there and jsut 100mg of seroquel after throwing up 2x that day but drinking lots of water : and my blood pressure dropped so much they said they might have to take me to the ER. I literally kept blacking out and had to eat and drink.

Withdrawals from ambien are so so intense for me. Seroquel makes me hyper and weak as well. In the ward I was on 150 and I felt like I couldn’t move hardly and everything was 1000lbs.

Idk what to do.

Also, I have great sleep hygiene.

Bed same time nightly

Ambient glasses 1-2 hrs b4 bed
Ear plugs
Showering
Less water consumption 4 hours b4 bed
No heavy meals ar night
Exercise at least 5 hrs before bed (I won’t workout past 4:30pm
Retainers
Nose strip.

Advice Magnesium glycinate causing extremely vivid dreams – does it get better?

I recently started taking 200 mg of magnesium glycinate (Natural Elements) before bed to improve my sleep.

Since starting about 5 days ago, I've been experiencing extremely vivid, realistic dreams and sometimes nightmares. I rarely had dreams like this before, so I suspect the magnesium might be causing it.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Did the vivid dreams eventually go away?

How long did it take for things to return to normal?

Should I continue taking it and see if my body adjusts, or stop?

Would appreciate hearing your experiences!

Advice Sleep Inertia - what's helped you overcome it?

Hey Sleep Sub! I'm very new to sleep inertia and man I absolutely despise it and the hold it has on me every single morning the past several months.

Was curious on what your experience with it has been and what you did to overcome and/or minimize it?

For context: I'm a 31M - healthy, athlete that watches what he eats and eats generally healthy.

I have no issues with sleep. Always 8-10 hours and never wake up during the night. Usually wake up rested but the sleep inertia hits as soon as I get up and get moving.

My unique caveat and why sleep inertia is a concern for me:

I have partial aphantasia which is the inability to voluntarily create or see mental images in your "mind's eye." It's a wide spectrum for how one experiences their inner world, memories, imagination etc. Everyone's is different and layered.

I acquired it from a traumatic event/depression in 2021 and before this event, I had the opposite brain type which is called hyperphantasia, the ability to voluntary generate images, sounds, textures etc in extreme detail and sensation.

Navigating and adjusting to this change has been very difficult and honestly debilitating.

It affects how I experience memories, my sense of self, how I imagine, conceptualize and experience my inner world.

For the most part I'm able to live a normal life but whenever I undergo anything moderately stressful like starting a new demanding job or relationship issues, my aphantasia becomes worse.

To be fair, recently my car got stolen, sold to someone and that person tried to sell it back to me lol. SO yes stressful shit like that.

Here's where my aphantasia fits in:

It's absolutely terrible in the morning. Things feels very present and almost like raw perception.

I still know who I am, where I am, what I have to do for the day but the internal experience of me and my life in continuity is very muted. Typically only external cues help generate the sensation of me rather than me doing it on my own.

Ultimately my sleep inertia is making my aphantasia worse for the first few 3-4 hours of the day.

Like I said, the sleep inertia feels like it only begins once executive thinking starts. Like making my bed, showering, getting ready, taking my meds and heading out the door.

It's feels like I'm treading through mud. I purposely take cold showers to wake myself up more and that helps a little.

I don't really start to feel like myself until after my morning cappuccino or two.

After caffeine and a dopamine boost, I start feel like myself again, sorta.

As the day progresses, things start to feel more like me and fluid but it feels like my sense of self goes in and out throughout the day.

I'm a bit lost on what to do

Aphantasia is distressing enough and sleep inertia is making it worse and I'm desperate to find some relief.

What have you done to personally overcome or minimize the affects of it?

Where do you think aphantasia fits into this?

Is there a larger issue here that's tied to fatigue? But where do I start with that?

I've looked into extended release caffeine/b12 supplements that you take before bed to help with sleep inertia but I'm skeptical because I do sleep very well otherwise.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

Discussion falling upwards

I didn't think this was too weird but my friends seemed pretty weirded, out but basically the last few times I've stayed in my aunts house in the countryside just as I'm falling asleep instead of the falling sensation you sometimes get, I hear this screaming or like a loud hum getting closer to me like someone's running up behind me, and then its like I've been pushed in the back so much so I can feel the hand (or at least the impact rather) push me on my shoulder and its so realistic that i end up sitting bolt upright as if someone really has pushed me up. I didn't think this was so weird the first time but then it happened a few more times on different visits and I was kinda like this is strange. the first time it happened I even though I sleep on my back I even turned to look at the mattress. I've heard of exploding head syndrome, and I'm familiar with that falling feeling when you almost fall asleep, but its almost like the inverse of that, and I only find it very odd because it never happens to me at home just my aunts house. it would just be cool to have an explanation if anyone has an idea or experienced something similar.

Insomnia 2 week spiral.

Hey all, I’m new to this subreddit.

I’m recovering from a medical condition where sleep is paramount to the healing process. My anxiety from this condition and its consequences has stolen rest from me. And now, worrying about a lack of sleep has compounded the issue.

I was discharged from the hospital with a months worth of hydroxyzine and a weeks worth of ambien. The hospital psychiatrist also prescribed remeron. Hydroxyzine helps to calm me down but it doesn’t help with sleep. Remeron helped me sleep on only one occasion and the next day side effects where horrible but I tried it again and it didn’t work so I dropped it. Ambien worked on 3 occasions ( twice in the hospital ) but it didn’t work when I took it a fourth time.

I’ve cut out caffeine and started drinking sleepy-time tea before bed.

I’ve gotten in to this cycle where I’ll sleep one night, feel great during the day but then the dread sets in at night and I can’t sleep again and stay up all night with racing thoughts. It’s going on 2 weeks.

I suffered insomnia this bad 14 years ago when I worked midnight shift. Back then I was diagnosed with sleep anxiety and the doc started me on klonopin and it helped. I was back to normal pretty quickly and stopped needing klonopin after a couple months.

My current situation is bringing up the trauma I went through back then.

I have an in-person appointment with a psychiatrist on Wednesday but I’m so panicky that I made a telehealth appointment for tomorrow with a Physician Assitant-Psychiatrist. I really don’t know what other type of specialist to turn to.

I’m hoping for some tips or advice. Perhaps anyone who has gone or going through something similar?

Discussion How do I train myself to fall asleep fast?

I’m 18 and have trouble sleeping sometimes. I’ve develop bad habits like staying on my phone in bed and not getting a lot of sleep. I mostly am making this post to ask how do I fall asleep quick? I know people who trained to be able to fall asleep in under a minute take a 30 minute nap and than be all good and somehow comeback refreshed. Is this good and how does taking short quick naps like this work?

Dreams & nightmares Sudden loud noise in my head

Is this normal?

Sometimes when I’m trying to sleep and like idk think too hard or something, my mind just flashes in white like those old tvs when they’re trying to find a channel but can’t connect. It’s like in the fraction of a second, and then I just suddenly open my eyes wide open.

In addition, I hear like a loud electronic-ish kind of noise, the best description I can have is of the intro of On sight by Kanye.

It kinda feel like I’m an electronic being reset lol.
Does anyone know why this could happen?
It’s kinda recurring a few times a month,1-4.

What helped me Nodpod isn’t for everyone, and why it’s for me

I think everyone should be fully informed about the way a product acts before they purchase it. I know that the nod pod isn’t for everybody and while I love it, I understand why other people don’t love it.

I think that I am the perfect target audience for the sleep mask because I love microbead pillows, I have used microbead pillows since I was a child. The grating noise of the beads rubbing against each other and the slightly harder places is what I love. It’s not for everyone and that’s okay. There’s plenty of sleep masks, you can find one that works for you, or maybe something covering your eyes just isn’t your jam and that’s okay.

Different strokes for different folks, I get why people think they suck but also it never hurts to try new things… maybe it’s your jam and you just don’t know. Taking a risk on potentially getting better sleep is never a bad idea, trials and tribulations.

Hopefully you have a friends product you can try before spending money. Or if you buy one and don’t like it maybe a friend would like it. The sisterhood of traveling eye mask.

I love my nodpod, maybe you will too

Advice Unisom works like a charm but I cant wake up and other issues

Hi so i started taking Unisom 25mg and for someone who works the night shift and isn't a night shift person, this pill works wonders. But a few problems.... is that I have a hard time waking up even after 8 hours of sleep, and I have a hard time not being groggy after waking up.
so here are a few things I'm currently doing
no caffeine 6 hours before sleeping
no Adderall under 10 hours before sleeping
black out shades
eye mask
noise cancelation headphones
on top of all this is a hood to block out even more light that might seep into the mask
so I do all this and take a Unisom before i sleep, and it works but Ill sleep maybe 10-12 hours a day and still feel tired long after waking up, I feel like if I took this pill on my day off I would sleep for a full 20 hours.. that being said, as I currently am I can not stop taking this pill, so are their ways where I don't waist my entire day sleeping before i need to go to work?

Discussion Has anyone else experienced depression because of DSPD?

I’m on the autism spectrum and back in 2020 I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. Then a few months ago I was diagnosed with DSPD and Chronic Insomnia. The first time I went to the sleep doctor, I was given the same old advice about using sleep hygiene which was frustrating. It actually made my sleep worse. What’s also annoying is that my natural rhythm doesn’t start until like 9-11 am to 4 pm and all these doctor and sleep therapist appointments are right in the middle of when my body thinks I’m supposed to be sleeping. I’ve also been having suicidal thoughts. Going through treatment for this disorder has made me feel more depressed than I have felt in a while.

Edit: I’m literally up at 3:30 am crying because of this stupid disorder. I hate that I might not be able to work a regular 9-5.

Discussion Occasional semi-concious state while sleeping

I've had this thing happen to me a few times where i'm in semi-concious state while sleeping and have to attempt to wake up. I can sometimes move parts of my body if I try hard enough (like my tongue, or feet, I can also feel my breathing) and when I try moving them in order to wake up, nothing happens. In between I also have very short dreams, for example, I had one where I was able to wake up and searched asmr on my phone (in the past, i've searched up asmr after these experiences in order to try and sleep properly) but I already on my head knew it wasn't real even though it felt like it. It's like trying to turn on an old tv but it just refuses to. It doesn't describe it fully but it's the closest example I can get.

Does this also happen to anyone else? What might it be?

For context I had this start up like a month and a half ago when I had my first sleepless night. it went on where I was sleeping like every other night for a few weeks until it kind of balanced out but now I’m having these nights like every week or so where I just literally can’t sleep and get anxious. it’s like I’m recovering from it but it keeps relapsing. what can I do? it’s currently 2:30am and I’m wide awake even after taking 25mg of trazedone an hour ago. I’m tired of this shit. Ant tips to get to bed?

Discussion Losing my mind lol

3 nights in a row now I’ve dozed off on a sofa near my bed and woke up in bed with my phone besides me. Strangely enough when I wake up I check my phone, only to find the YouTube video I dozed off to on the first page after unlocking.

I feel like I’m going crazy lol. Never happened to me before.

Advice I can barely sleep most nights. Not sure exactly how to describe the issue.

I struggle sleeping most nights. I wake up in a sweat or shivering at around 2 or 3 AM. Worse of all is right before waking up I have flashes, I think. Not sure how to really describe them, but I do see flashing colours or hear random sounds or voices. When those happen I feel extreme fear, again not sure why.

The issue has been going on for an awful amount of time, roughly 5 years. I think I have a healthy sleep schedule I go to sleep at 10 PM and wake up at 6AM. I only drink a cup of coffee in the morning, which isn't particularly strong and, regarding alcohol, I only drink on Christmas or other holidays

I thought it was related to stress at first, but even when I had significant downtime or I was on vacation I kept having these sort of experiences. I tried sleep medicine prescribed by my GP, ensuring optimal temperature, being properly hydrated, no screen time before bed and all sorts of methods to better my sleep and it had no effect. I am unsure exactly what the issue is, thought I'd ask around since most of the things I've tried did not help.

I workout most days and run every other day. Please suggest me what I can do, eat or follow to stop waking up. I'm currently unemployed right now so stress is barely a factor and I'm just above overweight in bmi.

Advice sleep problems after broken bone

hi, this is gonna be long but i need answers so pls read it if you have the time.

i made this account ten seconds ago, im making this post because i dont really know what to google for this and i know reddit can help sometimes

my brother, nick (fake name) broke a bone some time ago within this year. when he had his cast, he was in constant pain and experienced hallucinations and couldn't sleep most nights. after he got his cast off, he'd go through this thing where he'd be seeming conscious and awake, and he'd just start crying. like SOBBING. everything he would talk about sounded like me and other members of my family in whatever game he was playing earlier that day i assume, but whatever it was he was VERY stressed. he'd stop crying for like a minute or two and just blankly stare at something then start crying again. he would also be very irritable during these "episodes" and he would respond if you called his name but hes not fully conscious if that makes sense?? and he doesnt remember anything afterwards.

during other episodes it follows the same pattern, id hear loud coughs and crying from the living room. either id go out there or he'd come to my door THEN id go out, id try to talk to him and calm him down but hes just saying what seems to be nonsense ( game things i mentioned ) and it seems like the only way is to just wait it out

these episodes have been very spaced out but they still happen, and one happened a few minutes ago. im not sure if its over but theres not much i can do. he was crying so much he threw up and he kept apologizing to me and it made me really upset, i dont want him to keep going through this even if he doesnt rememer.

sorry for the ramble but the point is, my dad is taking too long to take my brother somewhere to see what the hell this is about, so im asking reddit to see if ill get any answers

TLDR: read it
