r/sleep now offers verified flair for sleep professionals: physicians, sleep technologists, psychologists who deliver CBT-I, dentists who treat sleep apnea, and researchers.
To apply, message the mods with your role and a public page that lists you (a staff page or professional directory). We'll ask you to add a short note with your Reddit username to it, or confirm in another way that suits you. Nothing you send is shared.
The flair comes with two expectations. Answers stay general information, not personal medical advice. And Rule 2 still applies: no promoting your practice, products or apps, and mention any financial tie to something you recommend. Flair that isn't used in that spirit may be removed.

My wife and I both wear socks to bed. We started going out in 2019 and she explained to me why she wears socks to bed as it helps you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. She happens to be a doctor, so she knows about all these various hacks. So not long after we moved in together (around 2021) she noticed how I had issues falling asleep so she told me that I should wear socks to sleep like she does. So I gave it a shot and it worked. Now I can't sleep without socks!
I know that for some couples, there is one who wears socks and the other does not. Most people sleep barefoot, but my wife and I are a rare breed I suppose in the sense that we both wear socks to sleep. How rare or odd is this?

So when i go to sleep at night i don't get tired and have to pretend to fall asleep to fall asleep, and takes me a little while to actually fall asleep, is this normal and does anyone else go through this?

Can an early bird really be compatible with someone that likes to sleep in?

I heard a very audible noise in my head as I was waking up today, a woman screaming, it sounded so real but it definitely didn't come from my surroundings. Sounds like something a person with schizophrenia might say but I have no history of any mental disorder. Has anyone ever experienced something like this?

Falling asleep isnāt the issue. I fall asleep fine, usually within 20-30 minutes. I usually stay asleep through the whole night, or at least I donāt remember waking up. And I get more than enough hours of sleep: 7 on school days and even up to 10 or 11 on weekends. The issue is that even despite that every time I wake up completely unrested, feeling exactly the same as before I went to sleep, as if the sleep actually did nothing. To put this into perspective: on the few occasions Iāve actually stayed up all night like actually didn't go to sleep, I felt really no different the next day than I do after a normal night of my āsleep.ā Its the same with naps. 2 hours or 11 hours, it all feels like it does essentially nothing.
This leaves me completely drained every single day, as if Iād been running on no sleep for days: heavy mental fatigue and brain fog, tired heavy eyes, physical exhaustion, shaky hands, worse coordination, constant yawning, low libido, getting stressed far too easily, and a bunch of other debilitating effects. People also regularly tell me I look tired or unwell without me even saying anything, so itās not just in my head.
The weird part: like every 1-2 months on average, completely out of nowhere, I get one night where my sleep actually works. Nothing different about my routine, but I wake up genuinely rested this time, like whateverās broken suddenly switched back on for one night, and I can tell the moment I open my eyes. Most of the symptoms I listed above lift at once, which is why Iām sure they all come from the sleep. Strangely, these nights are often short: I wake up on my own after just 3-5 hours, however I feel incomparably better than after even 10 hours of my usual broken sleep. Then the next night itās straight back to doing nothing. Honestly, it feels like these rare nights are the only time I actually get any sleep at all.
For context, Iām 18 and this started when I was 14, a month or two after I developed severe chronic pain. Over time the pain gradually subsided, and there have been long stretches where itās been mostly gone, but the sleep problem hasnāt budged through any of it. Hereās what Iāve tried so far, and none of it helped:
Has anyone had something similar, where you get plenty of sleep but it just doesnāt bring any rest? (I know itās called non-restorative or unrefreshing sleep, and Iāve done all the sleep hygiene stuff.) If so, did you find out what caused it, or anything that actually fixed it or helped?

Can people who say they only sleep like 3 hours or something every day by choice actually do that long term without major health problems?
Because I know someone who does exactly that and says he's fine but honestly I can't imagine that's a good idea. I'd rather stick to my 7.5 hours.

I'm trying to export a data file I gathered with a SleepO2. When I choose export it reports 'we can't share this file' - but I can share the summary. What's the difference? I also can't share it by quickshare, chrome, bluetooth, or messages, the other methods offered by Emay, either as csv or spo2

Hi everyone, Iām posting out of curiosity to see if anyone else experiences this or knows what it is.
Frequently, when Iām laying in bed trying to fall asleep, I will remember a previous dream that I dreamt days or even months prior. This is when Iām still conscious and not sleeping yet. Being in that awake but near-sleeping state will bring previous dreams to the surface that I otherwise completely forgot during the day. Normally I remember the dream environment and surroundings, then I remember the events of the dream.
Sometimes I can continue the dream when I fall asleep after I remember, even if the dream is from ages ago.
Other times, I fall asleep and find myself in the same random dream environment as a previous dream that I had forgotten about. Like I remember a previous dream while in a dream ā that feels like dĆ©jĆ vu.
Of note, these are random dreams and not related to any past traumatic events or anything like that. I thought this was normal and related to the brain moving through sleep stages, but my partner doesnāt seem to agree and thinks itās odd.
Whether or not this is related, Iāve also had sleep paralysis quite a few times throughout my life but it has been awhile at present.
Anyone else experience something like this?

I like sleep. It feels nice to lay down, but it feels like it takes forever for me to initially nod off. If I get up to go to the bathroom I can go back to sleep easily, but it's been over two months now and I don't know what to do/try.
For some context I am in bed from 9:30pm to 6:30am. I know that's longer than 8hrs, but I am tired. I am taking college courses, working a part-time job, hitting the gym 6 days a week, and I am in a local band. I also listen to audiobooks at one 0.85x speed to keep my mind 'tamed'. They are books I know so I don't get excited about the plot.
I don't really want to be reliant on sleep supplements. If anyone has experienced this or has any advice I would appreciate it!

So ive(19F) been having fragmented sleep for the past 2 ½ months and im terrified that ive caused brain damage. Im having slight memory issues and im just overall exhausted all day. I need some reassurance that im okay because Im horrified of anything altering my brain and stuff like that.
Ive been trying to fix my sleep schedule because id go to bed at 2 and get up at ten
So ive been going to bed an hour earlier every night and last night I went to sleep at 9:30. It didnt make a difference though because I just woke up like 3 different timesš
I have severe anxiety and I dont want to have brain damage or a risk of dementia or some crap like that. Can someone just reassure me this is temporary once I get my sleep back together.

Been looking into trying this What brand do you use? And what strength? Also, I was reading reviews about it, and people were saying it gives them energy. How can it help you sleep if it gives you energy? Iām kinda confused and scared to try it. So anyone out there that uses it and it actually helps, can you please give me some advice? Thanks š

It doesn't matter if I want to sleep 9 or 6 hours, wake up at 9 or 12. I slept around 5h 20mins today, it's not enough sleep but I keep waking up, and I feel so tired. I finally start falling asleep again like 10 minutes before my alarm.

What's happening:
Falling asleep is easy
Around 2am (roughly 5 hours in), I wake up and can't get back to sleep.
I wake up with a blocked nose, stuffy sinuses and puffy eyes, sometimes 1 nostril sometimes both nostrils. Sometimes could be clear.
My wife says I snore lightly to moderately. Never loud, and no gasping that she's noticed
Sometimes as I'm drifting off, I catch myself snoring or doing a mini gasp that wakes me back up. Eventually I think I fall asleep breathing through my nose normally.
This has been going on for over a year.
What I've tried so far:
Blood tests a year ago showed low T, I tried to raise naturally but didnāt really budge at all. So now on TRT.
Antihistamines:
didn't really help
TRT (8 weeks in):
I feel way better overall, but it's done nothing for my sleep
Diet:
I eat pretty clean plenty of protein, organ meats etc.., but I haven't tried pinning down whether specific foods could be causing the congestion
What's coming up:
Sleep study booked in about a month
Waiting on my 8-week bloods
Haven't done a DUTCH test yet
My questions for you:
Has anyone had the same "wake up blocked at 2am" pattern?
What turned out to be the cause?
Did a CPAP fix it for you?
Did anyone see an ENT and find a deviated septum, polyps or enlarged turbinates? Was surgery worth it?
Has anyone tracked down a food trigger for nighttime congestion?

I sleep on my back and need support for my knees (elevation).
I see these pricey, specialized memory foam knee pillows, and I keep wondering if a small, rectangular pillow (roughly 20cm x 25cm) works just as well...
What do you guys think?

So today I was sleeping with my bf, and we havenāt ever slept together before, so it was a weird little night. Hereās a quick summary.
I get in bed, and itās nice. I mean, itās like sleeping with your sister at a hotel becase theres not enough beds, but way hotter (in both ways). Anyway, itās like 12 p.m. I fall asleep and wake up to him giggling at his phone while looking at me because I sleep like this. (The arms are normally tighter than the image its like a streamline at swim-team but a h, so they block my nose and keep my head up, and my legs are never flat on the bed because I kick in my sleep.)
Anyway, is this fine, or am I insane like my bf thinks? (oh yea and the drawing was made in like 6 minutes with my finge cuz i dont wanna get my whole drawing tablet out for this

I have for a long time been able to sleep around 9-12 hours per night, sometimes even more. I am fatigued 24/7 due to two disorders I have, so no matter the amount of sleep, I never feel refreshed. Also when I slept for that long, I also took a nap either before noon or after noon and the nap could last for 1h30min or 3h.
My issue started when I started waking up at 8:30 am. I have my alarm set for 9 am always because that is my cats feeding time. Then I started waking up earlier and earlier. 8 am, 7:45, 7:30, 7:20, 7, 6:45, 6:30. And no matter the time I went to bed. For example, this night I got sleep at 2:30 and I woke up at 6:30. I did close my eyes for another hour because I was so pissed off. I also wake up many times during the night. I also sit up? I just sit in my bed half asleep.
I drink coffee only in the morning. I drink alcohol during the weekends and sometimes I can take 1 drink on wednesday. Medicines I take are gabapentin, oxiklorin, paroxetin and somac. I did start taking gabapentin a month ago.

I work remotely from 8 PM to 4 AM and my sleep schedule has never been this bad. You would think working from home would make things easier since I don't have to commute but by the time I finish work I'm exhausted yet my brain is still in work mode. I'll close my laptop at 3 AM and tell myself Im going straight to bed and next thing I know it's 5 or 6 AM and I'm still wide awake.
The worst part is my days off I try to sleep at normal hours so I can see my friends and family during the day but my body has other plans. I'll be wide awake at 3 AM on a saturday while everyone else is asleep. I just want to sleep the moment I go to bed why is that so hard OTL

Hi!
I have an Oura ring 4th gen and I often get notifications about my varied breathing patterns. I am curious as to if people have found this indicative of sleep apnea. I have a sleep study scheduled for January but am so exhausted I was hoping that yaāll could give some insight if at all possible.
I sincerely appreciate it!
