Discussion Is it strange that my wife and I both wear socks to bed?

My wife and I both wear socks to bed. We started going out in 2019 and she explained to me why she wears socks to bed as it helps you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. She happens to be a doctor, so she knows about all these various hacks. So not long after we moved in together (around 2021) she noticed how I had issues falling asleep so she told me that I should wear socks to sleep like she does. So I gave it a shot and it worked. Now I can't sleep without socks!

I know that for some couples, there is one who wears socks and the other does not. Most people sleep barefoot, but my wife and I are a rare breed I suppose in the sense that we both wear socks to sleep. How rare or odd is this?

Discussion Can only 3 hours of sleep a night be ok?

Can people who say they only sleep like 3 hours or something every day by choice actually do that long term without major health problems?

Because I know someone who does exactly that and says he's fine but honestly I can't imagine that's a good idea. I'd rather stick to my 7.5 hours.

Discussion Why is it easier to fall asleep when I'm not trying to?

I can barely keep my eyes open while watching something on the couch, but the moment I get up, brush my teeth, and actually go to bed, I'm wide awake again. It's annoying because I was literally falling asleep 10 minutes ago. Does anyone else deal with this? What do you do when it happens?

Advice What is the lowest bar bare minimum of sleep I need to survive?

I have a lot of shit to do, and not a lot of time to do it

not to mention, I'm stuck working eight hour shifts, just so waste over half my time unconcious, when the stuff I wanna do piles up more and more to the point it feels suffocating

That, combined with the time it takes me to get to work and back?

That's about 6 hours out of 24 each day where I can actually get to do stuff I want and, to me, that's complete bullshit

I've tried sleeping three hours a night, then four, then four and a half. What's the magic number here?

I'm not looking to be at my top physical state, I'm just looking to be alive.

Advice How much diphenhydramine and alcohol can be fatal?

I have a friend who has voiced wanting to take two bottles of diphenhydramine with a bottle of wine. Will this kill them? I’m trying to get in touch with anyone who can help them but I don’t know where they are right now. I just want to know if I should be legitimately worried that they’re going to die

Advice How to quiet my mind?

I genuinely don’t know what’s wrong with me or why I have such a hard time sleeping, and it’s becoming a real problem. Every day during the day, I go about my routine normally (bonus points if I doze off or almost fall asleep during my day activities) however, every single night without fail once it’s time to sleep I lay down and continue laying there for 3ish hours before i finally end up sleeping. I can’t keep doing this.

My brain literally never stops thinking. I’m always thinking about something, whether it’s something good, bad, completely random, or something that hasn’t even happened. It’s like there’s a constant internal monologue running in my head 24/7, and I can’t figure out how to turn it off.

Smoking weed definitely helps, it’s like my brain finally goes quiet. My thoughts slow down, I relax, and I’m actually able to fall asleep. The problem is that I don’t want to become reliant on weed just to get some sleep, but I genuinely can’t think of anything else that gives me that same feeling of silence.
I’ve tried sleep meditations and other things, but they don’t help because they still require me to think about something. I don’t want to redirect my thoughts or focus on my breathing. I just want my brain to stop thinking for once. I am also concussed and am unable to smoke at the moment.

Discussion Losing my mind lol

3 nights in a row now I’ve dozed off on a sofa near my bed and woke up in bed with my phone besides me. Strangely enough when I wake up I check my phone, only to find the YouTube video I dozed off to on the first page after unlocking.

I feel like I’m going crazy lol. Never happened to me before.

Advice I can barely sleep most nights. Not sure exactly how to describe the issue.

I struggle sleeping most nights. I wake up in a sweat or shivering at around 2 or 3 AM. Worse of all is right before waking up I have flashes, I think. Not sure how to really describe them, but I do see flashing colours or hear random sounds or voices. When those happen I feel extreme fear, again not sure why.

The issue has been going on for an awful amount of time, roughly 5 years. I think I have a healthy sleep schedule I go to sleep at 10 PM and wake up at 6AM. I only drink a cup of coffee in the morning, which isn't particularly strong and, regarding alcohol, I only drink on Christmas or other holidays

I thought it was related to stress at first, but even when I had significant downtime or I was on vacation I kept having these sort of experiences. I tried sleep medicine prescribed by my GP, ensuring optimal temperature, being properly hydrated, no screen time before bed and all sorts of methods to better my sleep and it had no effect. I am unsure exactly what the issue is, thought I'd ask around since most of the things I've tried did not help.

Advice I keep waking up every 1.5 hours 27M

I workout most days and run every other day. Please suggest me what I can do, eat or follow to stop waking up. I'm currently unemployed right now so stress is barely a factor and I'm just above overweight in bmi.

Advice What do you guys feel in the morning when you are ‘supposed to wakeup’ because I feel tired even if I wake up but wondering what other people go through as well

I wake up tired everyday like my eyes can barely open and very heavy and my body feels like I wrestled someone and everytime I want to go back to sleep I just can’t for some reason. Does anyone go through this, if so can you please tell me in detail how to fix this and tell me in detail how you are going through it because I like to listen to people’s stories 😁

Discussion Creatine has made my sleep more productive and easily-accessible.

Age 42. Hour for hour, creatine gives me more bang for my sleeping buck and I can wake up and go back to sleep with ease.

I take 5g during the day on my work days. And, I take just one 750mg capsule before bedtime every day.

Just this much plus not eating after 8pm, has made my sleep so easy.

It's like something I can voluntarily control.

I fall asleep at 10PM and wake up at 6-6:30am with the alarm and remember or have nothing going on in between. Close eyes and open eyes near-instantly.

If I want biphasic sleep, I can pull that off as well.

People are confusing creatine's effects on sleep as causing insomnia. I do not believe that's what happening. I could not previously sleep for 5 hours and not sense fatigue. With creatine, I can.

I believe this is happening because Creatine plus not eating before bed, leaves me with more energy to complete the sleeping cycle as fast as possible.

Where it won't help is if you are exercising intensely. Then, you can expect your sleep requirements to remain high.

Advice Work stress preventing sleep even on non work nights

Post image
11 Upvotes

So I started my first job ever in November 2025. It's hybrid WFH and it was fine for a while but now it's really taking its toll on me. I fell into the trap of psychologically connecting my home with the workplace so now I cannot relax while on my computer at home. It's not even a hard job but I've never had any concept of stress before I started working, even if I had previously experienced it, so I never learned management strategies.

My sleep has been getting continuously worse since April. It basically feels like I've downed a can of red bull: I'm totally wired all night and my heart is pounding out of my chest.

I take 5mg melatonin but it doesn't help whatsoever. I also take propanolol, and it reduces my pulse but the strength of my heartbeat doesn't change and I'm still on high alert. I also make sure not to take caffeine after 5pm. No good. I exercise regularly, and while it helps during the day, my stress response comes back at night. Needless to say this is totally ruining my life.

I think my sleep quality may be somewhat iffy as anything less than a solid 8 hours usually makes me feel pretty tired the next day, on days where i can actually sleep. It's getting to the point where I'm getting chest pains (I'm 28.)

Any advice would be appreciated

Advice Doubled my REM each night with a teaspoon of glycine

Just wanted to share this in case it helps anyone like me who wakes up a lot in the night. I started to take a teaspoon of glycine mixed with a tiny bit of warm water before bed each night and noticed I was sleeping better. I used to wake up once a night to pee, like clockwork, and now I don't wake up at all. My Garmin says my REM has gone from 40-50mins per night to 1 hour 20-40 mins each night.

I recommended it to my mum who has also always struggled to sleep deeply and she has said the same thing.

Some research apparently backs it as "promoting restful sleep" but honestly I haven't read it or looked into it much, it just seems to work for me. I don't sell glycine or get anything out of this, just hoping to help some people out there.

Insomnia How to overcome sleep anxiety?

For context I had this start up like a month and a half ago when I had my first sleepless night. it went on where I was sleeping like every other night for a few weeks until it kind of balanced out but now I’m having these nights like every week or so where I just literally can’t sleep and get anxious. it’s like I’m recovering from it but it keeps relapsing. what can I do? it’s currently 2:30am and I’m wide awake even after taking 25mg of trazedone an hour ago. I’m tired of this shit. Ant tips to get to bed?

Insomnia I'm never tired and it's affecting my life. Nothing helps. What do i do?

Literally it's getting to a point where my life is affected. I'm missing classes and unable to focus.

I go to bed at 9 because i want to be asleep by 10 at latest because i have to wake up at 5:30 to get to my 8am classes. But i just cant fall asleep. I keep turning and tossing because i feel fully overenergized. It's really affecting my life because even though i turn energetic at night, i feel very lethargic and tired during the day as a result of lack of sleep. I think also my body is getting affected. It doesn't help that i have very bad psychological nightmares (not anything gore-y or scary, not sleep paralysis or demons, just truly disturbing like being kidnapped and trafficked, being embarrassed in front of a crowd, being ridiculed and left by my friends, my family dying and me being the only one to survive, etc...) nearly everytime i fall asleep, so even when i manage to fall sleep i will either wake up in the middle of my sleep or i wake up extremely disturbed.

I do not consume any caffeinated drinks/soda, no alcohol, no medication. I take some supplements like folic acid, omega 3, creatine daily, and iron + d3 occasionally.

I exercise daily, i walk everywhere, i do 1.5hours gym sessions 3-4x a week, i'm doing a demanding major (mechanical engineering) so i use my brain and study a lot, i avoid screens 1 hr before my sleep, i tried consistently taking melatonin multiple times, i even tried reading books with a dim light to get my eyes tired, but nothing helps. No matter how tired i feel during the day i just switch to wide awake the moment i'm supposed to sleep.

One thing that may be an issue, i have an extremely bright 3-bulb fixture white LED light in my room. (Darkness makes my depression 1000x worse, i need constant brightness or else i literally cannot function during the day). I started turning my lights off 2 hours before i go to sleep, and i'm saving up for some red light lamps in hopes that those may help.

What is there to do? I need to change this asap. I cannot fail any classes or else i will lose my scholarship.

Discussion Occasional semi-concious state while sleeping

I've had this thing happen to me a few times where i'm in semi-concious state while sleeping and have to attempt to wake up. I can sometimes move parts of my body if I try hard enough (like my tongue, or feet, I can also feel my breathing) and when I try moving them in order to wake up, nothing happens. In between I also have very short dreams, for example, I had one where I was able to wake up and searched asmr on my phone (in the past, i've searched up asmr after these experiences in order to try and sleep properly) but I already on my head knew it wasn't real even though it felt like it. It's like trying to turn on an old tv but it just refuses to. It doesn't describe it fully but it's the closest example I can get.

Does this also happen to anyone else? What might it be?

Advice I scream in my sleep without waking up

I've searched everywhere for this. According to those around me I scream very loudly in my sleep to the point where I scare them awake, while I remain sound asleep. Everyone else online who reported screaming in their sleep also said they see nightmares and wake up sobbing and sweating and whatnot. Problem is; I've never experienced any of that! I never have nightmares, my dreams are always random and mundane. I never wake up sweaty in the middle of the night unless I'm sick (which is rare). I just scream, sleep talk, and nothing else. I thought that this would stop as I grow older but I am pretty much an adult by all means now and the problem still hasn't stopped, this has been going on for at least 4 years. My sleep isn't perfect but it isn't that flawed either. I naturally sleep for about 8 hours and wake up feeling refreshed. I never drink coffee or alcohol, nor take any medications.
Does anyone else have this problem, or at least some guidance before I seek professional help?
