Question Joining the hobby, looking for something specific

Post image
131 Upvotes

Got this cheap little $15 RC truck to see if the hobby would be something I’d like to pursue considering I work on cars for a hobby as well. Was pretty impressed with what it could do but I’m looking for something on the small side like this (bit of a size upgrade) but that’s faster and can actually off road.

RC4WD interested me with their hardbodies however I’m not looking to drop $600 on a professional one just entering the hobby.

I’d like to spend at most $250 on a hardbody truck. Any recommendations? I wouldn’t mind having to build my own either. Bonus points if I can slap a mini go-pro on it.

Question RC Engine not starting

Hi! I just build an rc engine: Super Tigre 18

It's from a magazine collection.

I wanted to test the engine but it's not starting.

I verified and gasoline its getting inside the carburator and inside the cylinder.
The spark plug is also working

I think there is compression since at TDC, i feel the pressure...

I have the feeling that the glow plug its making it harder, but I tried with the spark plug outside the engine and it got red.

I attach a video to show what its doing but I feel that is not backfiring....

Any suggestions?

Bashing Testing out the RC Tag Arena

• Upvotes

Me and my son prefer a game of tag instead of racing. If you are the tagger, you have 30 seconds from when your gate drops to get them! Not something you want to do with your treasured rc cars, as you see. Built with/around the crawler course for that 2-in-1 space saving action.

My son is orange, I am blue, and I included the slow-mo of his escape 'cause I thought it was pretty fancy.

Question How Fast Is Fast Enough?

I realize this is pretty subjective based on preference and use case.

But...

What's your own criteria for what is fast enough? When is enough, enough?

I was just trialing my new motor/esc combo in my SC truck. Some testing showed this combo could really easily handle more aggressive gearing. Then I started to think... Do I need more speed? While the fun answer is always "yes" the reality is that It already seems kind of too fast for where I'm doing most of my driving. And its pretty fun right now as is. So for now I'm going to leave it.

what's your criteria?

Question Was This a Good Deal?

I bought a used Traxxas Jato 3.3 tonight off Facebook Marketplace. It looked to be in good condition. It needs a couple of small things but nothing major that I can see. It starts and runs and got up to a decent speed in the parking lot where I bought it. I gave $175 for it. I haven't been in the hobby long but I thought the price seemed pretty good. What do you guys think?

Build Swap Meet Haul and Rally Build

I got all this from the annual RC swap meet at my local RC store:

Free 1/24 3D printed 1981-'83 Toyota Hilux truggy body.

$20 heavily used 1/10 HPI Nissan Skyline R32 body.

$1 heavily used Integy wheelie bar.

Traded for 1/10 JConcepts Spirit tires on purple JConcepts 9 Shot rims.

$5 Late '90s/Early 2000s Futaba Helicopter transmitter.

$50 Arrma Mojave with no transmitter, battery, or charger. A relative bought me those.

The Mojave is fantastic and works fine.

I'm going to build the Nissan into a 35MPH rally car using the swap meet parts, an HPI E10 main chassis, and whatever buggy/short course parts I can make work.

I want to buy as few new parts as possible for as little money as possible. It'll be a pain to build and it'll probably suck, but I want to see if I can do it.

Crawling Axial SCX30 K10 is awesome!

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm just getting back into the hobby. The last time I was messing around with RC cars, Nitro was King. Decided it was time to get back into it and decided on giving rock crawling a try. I didn't really want to spend a bunch of money so, after talking with the salesperson for a little bit I landed on the Axial SCX30 K10. Took a little bit of getting used to but, this thing is great for the price. I'm definitely going to be ordering some brass Wheels to make the center of gravity a bit lower considering the K10 is a little top heavy. Other than that, I've got no complaints.

Here's a short video I took while messing around.

On-Road HPI RS4 3 Drift in blue and gold — a full turn around the Silvia S15 body

Blue, gold and classic HPI nitro. 🔵✨

A quick full rotation around the HPI Nitro RS4 3 Drift wearing a Nissan Silvia S15 body. Gold HPI graphics, black multi-spoke wheels and a tall rear wing bring the style; shaft-driven 4WD brings the hardware beneath the shell.

Which detail stands out to you?

Question Help for Older Brother: Losi 1/12

So, I should preface this with my last RC cars had the up/down joystick for throttle.

My little brother wants to get in to stock Losi racing. He is 10.

We have a car for each of us and a backup completely stock car (I bought one to be a menace once I get better).

What do I need to bring with me / what should I buy to compete in a 2 heat / 1 main race for the boy and I? What am I going to need to buy (other than "dirt tires") for us to practice in parking lots to improve his hand/eye control?

Honestly, I am super excited because he is loving the hobby (1 club race) and spent 5 hours talking to me about the RC cars going around after being there for 2 hours.

If you have anything to tell me about batteries please talk slow to me, because my experience with batteries are buying more AA's from Harbor Freight.

Thanks.

Question RC recommendation

Hi. Been playing around with mostly cheap RTR cars that are under $200 and don’t seem the best of quality. While I’m not looking to build my own. I would like to invest in something a little bit more intermediate that I could possibly practice on our local track. I believe it’s a short course dirt track that runs 1/8 scale. I’d like to keep it below $700. I’m open to styles and brands but would like to stay electric.

Thanks!

Question Weird behavior

Just got the Traction Hobby Tank 300. It’s amazing apart from one issue:

When steering it has some jittering/binding I have not been able to diagnose.

If I go full throttle, no issues, I can steer no problem.

But when I reduce throttle, seems there is binding somewhere.

Already tried endpoints and no change. And if endpoints had an issue, it will also show at full throttle.

I wonder is it’s the esc not being able to manage?

Esc is the stock WP 880 dual brushed.

Any advice is welcome.

Question Buggy Brand and Model Advice

I am looking to get a new electric buggy but I am unsure on what to look for on the 2nd hand market. Any and all advice and reccomendations are appreciated.

RC background;

HPI MT2 ‐ I rebuilt an old mt2 engine and enjoyed it driving around grass fields.

HSP Warhead - First new nitro, I constantly go through dog bones, stripped gears and burnt out clutches to the point I dont use it anymore.

FTX Khaos - First electric car, within 4 months I have broken almost all the parts other than the diffs and replaced them and ive put this one to bed since it breaks something different each outing.

Arrma Infraction v2 6s- First on road car, absolutely love this car, the only issues ive had was the stock servos dying over time which ive replaced. This is the only car ive not had a mechanical breakdown with despite crashes which would of broken any of my previous or current cars.

Where I drive:

- tarmac roads

- grass fields

- dirt bike tracks

- skate parks

- considering local hobby tracks (santapod, uk)

What im looking for:

- 1/8 scale

- good for bashing

- potential to be somewhat successful on astro/dirt tracks

- 3s / 6s since I have a collection of 3s and 6s batteries

- parts availability (uk)

- Budget of £400 (mainly looking at 2nd hand)

I have been impressed by the arrma taking 50+ mph crashes, skate park bashing and big jumps/drops without issue and expect similar reliability from my next purchase. I have been looking at arrma mojave, typhon and typhon tlr however im not sure if I should go for the 3s or 6s versions. Should I consider 4s or other brands? Ive seen some kiosho neo 3.0 and mp10e in my price range.
