U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Why do pred catchers so often catch people who have intellectual disabilities?

It seems like a disproportionate amount of people caught by pred catchers show signs of having an intellectual disability. Is there a reason for this? Like are they more susceptible to being tricked than non disabled predators?

Is there any real possibility that some mysterious undiscovered gigantic marine animal could be somewhere deep down in the ocean?

I know this sounds silly but I feel as if it'd be possible for a gigantic marine animal that rivals the size of a blue whale. I mean we know more about what is in space than what's in the ocean. If not then maybe an undiscovered shark that isn't massive but it'd be an undiscovered shark and that would be nice to see just in general.

What is the evolutionary advantages to having members of a society with addictive personalities? NSFW

I understand that in the hunter/gatherer days, being addivictive wasn't as detrimental because drugs, alcohol, and gambling wasn't as readily available. Now, one can ruin their life really quickly with vices on demand. But what purpose and advantages doesn being predispositioned to addictions serve?

How do you pick up women at bars?

I’m 22 and single as hell and don’t really have time to look for a relationship with work taking up all my time. I’ve never been to a bar before, but I’m willing to give it a try.

What does it look like? Does it only work for attractive dudes?

Thanks

How did Germany amass such a massive army during WW2?

Endless soldiers, tanks, planes, ammo to be able to occupy much of Europe and put up a good fight against most of the world. Seems nuts

So every first world country now has a housing problem?

I thought it was only a few countries like Netherlands, Portugal and the capital cities. How did we get to this point that basically every single first world country got to this point?

Do people really walk into other people’s houses in America?

This might be just a Hollywood thing, but I’ve been wondering for years.

You always see them knock a couple times and then walk right in in the movies.

I would freak the absolute fuck out if I found someone inside my house. Even a family member.

Is it really like that?

My neighbour complains when I shower late at night, but I work night shifts what should I do?

I work night shifts at a factory, and when I get home, I want to take a shower before going to bed. The problem is that my neighbour complains about me showering so late at night.

I come home tired and sweaty after working in a factory, and I just want to clean myself up before sleeping. I understand that noise can be annoying at night, but I can't exactly change my work schedule.

Am I being unreasonable for wanting to shower when I get home from work, or is my neighbour being too demanding? How would you handle this situation?

In conservative cultures where people don't learn about sex and anatomy in school, when do men learn about Periods?

I have heard of girls who have families so conservative that they never get told or warned about periods and think it's something wrong with them. As much as this is famous in Carrie, I've read stories of this happening pre 1950s to girls.

It raised my question, when did men learn about it? Especially if there wasn't anatomy and sex ed in schools at the time.

Is it just me or is a huge chunk of Reddit now just bots talking to bots?

So this might sound tinfoil hat but hear me out.

I know a couple of people who run Reddit account networks. Like actually run them, as a business. I always knew bots were a thing here but when they told me the numbers I genuinely didn’t believe them at first. It’s not 10 accounts. It’s not 1000. It’s hundreds of thousands of accounts just... living on Reddit. Posting, commenting, replying to each other, starting arguments, building up a history so they look like real people. Then they get sold.

And now I can’t unsee it. Half the time I open a thread I’m wondering if the post is AI, the top comment is AI, and the guy arguing with it is also AI. Like a good chunk of what we read here (maybe even half? idk) is just generated stuff made to bait real people into replying so the account looks legit.

And it’s obviously only gonna get worse. Every month it’s harder to tell if you’re talking to an actual human.

So my actual question is: is there still any point to Reddit if you can’t tell who’s real anymore? Does it still have value for you, or are we all just yelling at chatbots at this point?

(and no, this wasn’t written by ChatGPT lol)

Why do cops not have something like malpractice insurance instead of qualified immunity?

Is it simply because of the obvious things like treating them like a special class of citizen/keeping them from any accountability/thin blue line nonsense? Or is there an actual logical/practical reason? Would a system like that not work for some reason?

For people the grew up near train tracks- do you ever get used to the noise and rumbling?

Drove passed a string of houses one street back from tracks while a long train went by and wondered how you could sleep through that 🤔

Edit: meant to say “for people that…” but you all get it.

Edit 2: What an incredible response. Seems most get used to it, and eventually miss it. Train schedules become inherent and part of the daily rhythm. People realize when the schedule is off, even when sleeping. Horns suck and there’s a few folks that never get used to it.

A question of Reddit etiquette

• Upvotes

I've just passed my first year on Reddit, and one thing I've noticed is how common it is for OPs not to reply to individual comments, even in threads that invite discussion or pose a question.

I've always found this a little strange. If someone takes the time to respond to something I've posted, my instinct is to acknowledge their contribution, even if it's only with a quick thank you. If I've specifically asked a question, all the more so. There's a certain reciprocity to conversation that feels natural to me.

So I'm curious: what's the etiquette around replying to comments on Reddit, and what informs people's approach to it?

Is it simply a matter of scale? Perhaps a thread is less a conversation between individuals and more a resource for the wider community, where too many replies from OP might clutter the discussion or interrupt its flow. Perhaps it's a question of time, or the practical impossibility of responding to everyone once a post gains traction. Or is there an unspoken social convention at play that I'm yet to pick up on?

Do you see replying to comments as a basic courtesy, or do you think the expectation of a response misunderstands what Reddit is for?

What happens if a voluntary religious person cannot adhere to certain dress standards because they physically cannot dress themselves & would not have help?

Example would be a hijab, a sheital, dastaar, etc. I know the answer will vary from person to person and religion to religion, but I'd love to hear a myriad of answers.

Example: a devout Muslim tragically had both arms amputated. She lives alone and must physically go to a doctor appointment and cannot miss this. No one is there to help her put her hijab on in this scenario. Maybe she typically has a helper, but today she does not. What happens in this scenario? Is she considered to be "sinning?" What is the protocol for this?

Edit to add: i am interested in hearing from other religions as well. I just didn't want to type out multiple write up examples for the sheital, dastaar.
