U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Could anyone just walk into a court house with a suit and a fake business card and tell the cops “im the suspects lawyer” and get a completely unsurveilled conversation with their friend who just got arrested?

Like, if a criminal or something wanted to have a conversation with their associate who is being tried, without the police listening in on them.. couldn’t they just pretend to be a lawyer? It’s illegal, for sure. But what’s stopping them?

Why do pred catchers so often catch people who have intellectual disabilities?

It seems like a disproportionate amount of people caught by pred catchers show signs of having an intellectual disability. Is there a reason for this? Like are they more susceptible to being tricked than non disabled predators?

Do people really believe that Tesla Roadster (flying car) will be available in 2028?

• Upvotes

I sat with some people and discussed Roadster which was shown. I said that i don't believe people will be able to drive it in society any time soon. Everyone disagreed with me.

What happens to traffic? Imagine a car losing control and falling onto a busy street. The safety regulations alone could take years to figure out.

Is there any real possibility that some mysterious undiscovered gigantic marine animal could be somewhere deep down in the ocean?

I know this sounds silly but I feel as if it'd be possible for a gigantic marine animal that rivals the size of a blue whale. I mean we know more about what is in space than what's in the ocean. If not then maybe an undiscovered shark that isn't massive but it'd be an undiscovered shark and that would be nice to see just in general.

In conservative cultures where people don't learn about sex and anatomy in school, when do men learn about Periods?

I have heard of girls who have families so conservative that they never get told or warned about periods and think it's something wrong with them. As much as this is famous in Carrie, I've read stories of this happening pre 1950s to girls.

It raised my question, when did men learn about it? Especially if there wasn't anatomy and sex ed in schools at the time.

What is the evolutionary advantages to having members of a society with addictive personalities? NSFW

I understand that in the hunter/gatherer days, being addivictive wasn't as detrimental because drugs, alcohol, and gambling wasn't as readily available. Now, one can ruin their life really quickly with vices on demand. But what purpose and advantages doesn being predispositioned to addictions serve?

Hey I need some advice. I follow a plant based diet and I have a non vegan house guest. They want me to make bacon. I bought some and I just want to know the best way to cook it.

• Upvotes

Like oven, microwave? Skillet? And please other vegans don’t drag me. I am trying to be hospitable and I know the smell would normally destroy me but I have no sense of smell. So what’s the best way to make bacon? I want it to be perfect. This is my best friend I haven’t seen in like 7 years.

Why do hotel bathrooms keep installing ridiculously complex shower taps instead of a tried and true solution?

Doing a road trip this week and have been in several different hotels, and each one insists on having bizarrely complicated ways of turning on the shower.

Why can't everything be those where raising the handle up increases flow, and right/left are hot and cold?

This doesn't seem like an area that requires innovation.

How do you pick up women at bars?

I’m 22 and single as hell and don’t really have time to look for a relationship with work taking up all my time. I’ve never been to a bar before, but I’m willing to give it a try.

What does it look like? Does it only work for attractive dudes?

Thanks

How did Germany amass such a massive army during WW2?

Endless soldiers, tanks, planes, ammo to be able to occupy much of Europe and put up a good fight against most of the world. Seems nuts

How to stop being racist or homophobic?

• Upvotes

Now I will openly admit that I am both of these things. At school I thought I was just joking around, but I went to a hotel and got a wake-up call. I saw a bunch of gay people and people of other races, and I got scared. Literally. I don't wanna be this way because I believe people are equal, they have rights to love who they love, and their race doesn't matter. But this was just subconscious. How do I get out of this?

Edit: Wow this sub responds fast! Let me clear up some things.

  1. I would not intentionally insult someone for certain things like this.

  2. I will not comment on why I was scared. I don't wanna spell it out.

  3. I have black friends already and possibly gay friends (not sure).

Do people really walk into other people’s houses in America?

This might be just a Hollywood thing, but I’ve been wondering for years.

You always see them knock a couple times and then walk right in in the movies.

I would freak the absolute fuck out if I found someone inside my house. Even a family member.

Is it really like that?
