A Breakdown of 40 & 62 kWh Battery Pack Failures

As some people may have heard of or unfortunately experienced, there have been quite a number of cases of 2nd generation Leaf batteries failing. I was planning and trying to make this into a video format, but as I’m still recovering from a cold my voice isn’t quite up for narrating an essay, so text format it is.

Hopefully this can raise some awareness and provide a central source of info as to what’s going on, why it’s happening, what to do about it, and things to consider. There are two separate issues currently causing outright failures of 2018+ Leaf battery packs, and so will be split up into two sections.

Cold-weather SOC Freefall

  • What’s going on?

Under load in cold temperatures, especially below freezing and below 50% battery, the charge level and range estimate will suddenly begin to plummet and continue to drop rapidly until the load is removed, at which case the charge level starts to bounce back and quickly increase again.

The car may go into turtle mode, or in severe cases even cut off the high voltage battery completely, in which case the car will stall and may not be able to be restarted.

Here is a video example of what this sudden drop of charge level looks like.

This issue affects both the 40 kWh and 62 kWh packs. The 40 kWh packs seem to be much more susceptible, but as the 62 kWh packs use the same cells and chemistry, they are not immune. This also includes 40 packs that were installed as retrofits under warranty in 2016-17 Leafs.

  • Why is this happening?

This is occurring due to one or more weak cells within the battery pack sagging excessively in voltage under load, which is greatly exacerbated when the battery is cold, due to increased internal resistance.

How the battery works is that the shown and usable state of charge is defined by that of the lowest cell. This is to prevent over-discharge of any weaker cells at lower charge levels, as that would cause even further damage to them.

Often this can be witnessed in the LeafSpy cell chart as one or more cells that clearly drop lower than the rest of the pack under load, but not always. There have been a number of cases of SOC freefall with seemingly no weak cells, indicating that there’s other data/calculations within the BMS that the user cannot see.

Getting a weak cell is essentially luck of the draw. There have been packs with very low mileage and seemingly great numbers that still failed (such as in the video above), while there are other packs with lots of miles and abuse that are still working just fine. How the pack is treated/babied does not seem to affect your chances in the roulette.

  • What to do about it?

If you are encountering this issue as an owner, and the car is still under warranty, document everything as much as possible. Record video(s) of the issue happening, noting the charge level and outside temperature the battery is at. Submit this proof to the dealer as a copy, and demand that it be used in their case to Nissan corporate.

Bring the car to the dealership for diagnosis with as cold of upcoming weather as possible. Some dealers may try poorly to replicate the issue, often in the interest of charging the customer the diagnostic fee. You want to make the issue as obvious and easily to replicate as you can.

If you have to drive the car around, ensure you either have LeafSpy Pro, or keep an adjustable or 10mm wrench with you in the car. If the cell voltages ever drop low enough for the car to shut down, it is likely to set a high voltage fault code and won’t be able to restart until the fault is cleared. Clearing the fault via the LeafSpy service menu, or disconnecting and reconnecting the 12V battery, will at least allow you to limp the car to a charger or safe location off the road.

UPDATE: For 2019-2022 Leafs, the "fast charging recall" software update now adds programming to the BMS to look for and flag SOC variations, setting a fault code (P33ED) if it does. This has the potential to "brick" the car in the same way as a high voltage isolation fault (read section below) would. Be cautious of this so that it does not potentially leave you stranded.

  • Things to consider

If you own a 2nd generation Leaf (especially 40 kWh) that is still under warranty, still on the original battery, and live in a climate that gets winter, check for signs of this issue BEFORE warranty ends!

During cold weather, park the car outside overnight with 50% charge or less, then take the car out for a drive and see if there are any strange fluctuations in the state of charge during acceleration.

If you are considering purchasing one and there is no proof of the high voltage battery being replaced, ensure there is at least one year worth of warranty remaining on the car so that you can spend a winter with it and will still be covered in the case of this failure.

LeafSpy data can sometimes be a pre-indicator that you will likely run into this issue if there is a noticeably low Hx value (much lower than SOH), but not always. Low Hx is a strong sign of possible weak cells, but weak cells will not always cause low Hx.

Cell Expansion / High Voltage Isolation

  • What’s going on?

The car will one day show the message “Service EV System – Unable to restart after power off”, and indeed will not restart after it is powered off.

The vast majority of cars affected by this issue are 62 kWh Leaf Plus/e+ models. It is not unheard of on 40 kWh cars, but it is quite rare unless the pack was heavily used and abused.

There is a Nissan TSB on this issue which confirms they are well aware of this issue, and there are revised battery packs and modules that are issued in replacement if the car is still under high voltage battery warranty.

  • Why is this happening?

Thermal expansion of the battery cells causes them to eventually expand to the point of pushing up against each other, and in some cases even leaking electrolyte out of the cells into the battery casing, eventually causing the car to trip a high voltage isolation fault.

This is most commonly happening in specifically the rear stack of cells within the 62 kWh pack, because they are so tightly packed together, that they don’t get much cooling nor much room to expand before they begin pushing up against each other.

High voltage isolation is important, because obviously you do not want any high voltage potential to be contacting the metal battery casing that is bolted to the metal body of the car. If the BMS detects that there is even just a little bit of voltage leaking from one cell to another, or the cells to the battery chassis, an isolation fault is tripped.

  • What to do about it?

If you encounter specifically the “unable to restart after power off” message, and the car is still within high voltage battery warranty, DO NOT REPLACE THE 12V BATTERY.

This specific message is ONLY generated due to a high voltage isolation fault, and although a weak 12V battery can cause many weird issues, it will NEVER generate a high voltage isolation fault. Unless there is an extremely urgent need to continue driving the car, have it towed in the “broken” state to a Nissan dealership.

It is a much more objective issue than weak cells, and basically the only diagnosis they would need to approve a battery replacement is to see the stored isolation fault code. Disconnecting the 12V battery however clears this fault code, making it not possible for them to verify the issue unless it happens to fault again in only one drive cycle.

Replacing the 12V battery gives a false sense of success because it allows the car to start and drive again, but only until the fault eventually comes back. It's just a waste of money and a perfectly good battery to not actually address the underlying issue.

If you urgently need the car to work again, clearing the fault code in LeafSpy Pro or by disconnecting and reconnecting the 12V battery will allow it to start. Just be aware that by doing this, you won’t be able to have the issue verifiable by Nissan until it pops up again. It may only take 1 drive cycle, it may take 100.

  • Things to consider

Unfortunately there isn’t really any way to foretell that this issue will happen soon or to check for it, as you can’t just force an isolation fault to appear like you can with weak cells.

Battery packs in hot climates and/or lots of quick charges are more susceptible to this issue due to it being a result of thermal expansion. Packs torn apart after diagnosis of this issue often exhibit very obvious “spicy pillows” within.

If you are a current owner, especially of a Plus/e+ model, the best you can do is to avoid overheating/rapidgating the battery whenever possible. Doing so once every few months is not a big deal, but frequently doing so will likely lead to long-term damage.

If looking to purchase a Leaf Plus/e+, or a high mileage 40 kWh car in a hot climate, make sure to check Leaf Spy, and it may be wise to avoid any examples that have lots of QCs shown.

There is a great in-depth video by LEAF expert Dala explaining this issue more in detail for those who are interested.

Is it time to sell it before it gets worse?

Hi,

I have a year 2019, 62kwh e+ 3.zero model. Location: UK

I don’t experience any problems with the battery.

Just recently i noticed the bar went down a little bit.

Is this normal considering there is 123,000 miles on it.

Seeking real world experience: has anyone added an external CarPlay display to their 2017 Leaf?

I miss CarPlay, and am interested in the idea of adding a widesceen external CarPlay display with dash cam — I just don't know how it will look on the 2017 dash, because it doesn't look all too flat on the dash. So I'm curious if anyone else has done this and can share their opinion, also vs. swapping the factory head unit with a CarPlay enabled one, which looks like way more hassle. TIA! Cheers

Anyone on the pion power or Grizzle cash back charging program? I heard about these 2, seeing if there's any good feedback or if there are better programs out there.

If you have referral code that's great too

Why shouldn’t I buy a 2024 or 2025 Leaf?

We have a Subaru Ascent that is the family road trip car. We also have a Mazda CX9 that the Leaf would replace. I work from home so this car would be for running the kids around, errands, etc. Maybe the odd out of town trip a few times a year about 180 miles round trip. Also can charge it home but charging would be a weekly thing at most.

The goal would be for this car to be handed down to our daughter in a few years when she’s of driving age.

It seems like despite the older tech that these are very reliable cars that have had all the kinks ironed out and the SV Plus trim has all of the nice features like adaptive cruise control while still having actual buttons for things (something that drives me nuts on our Ascent).

Plus I genuinely like the styling of the pre-refresh Leaf.

So what am I missing? Is this not a great purchase for our use cases? Are the battery concerns still limited to pre 2023 models?

New to Me 2017 30kWh, 60k miles - Viability for another 5 years as a city car?

Recently purchased a 2017 30kWh S trim Leaf; I'm the third owner, and I know the previous owner as a friend. Car appears mechanically and cosmetically in great shape. Dash indicates 9 bars of battery capacity, and typical estimated range is 70-75 miles when fully charged. I will admit, I probably didn't do enough research before purchase, as this is an out-of-warranty 30kWh model without the30kWh battery having been replaced under warranty (never quite met requirements or had problems other than 'typical' range degradation).

We've picked this up as a 4th vehicle for our family (three other ICE cars, 2 teenage drivers). It's intended use is typical grocery, commute, school, and kid activity trips around town, with typical trips of ~10-15 miles roundtrip, and maximum range trips of 20-30 miles roundtrip. Level 1 charging available nightly in the garage at home, and L2 charging (public/pay) if needed at both my and my spouse's work locations. Trips involve some freeway driving, but due to their short distance, city road network is also available at a few minutes longer drive. For any trip plans that might give me range anxiety or would require offsite charging we'd utilize another vehicle. Location is the Pacific NW, so relatively mild temperatures.

I've purchased LeafSpy, done some analysis, and have been digging through the manual; see posted photos. Car has extremely limited quick charges (29); it was exclusively charged via L1 charger for the past ~5 years by the previous owner.

So, my major questions at this point:

  1. Is this a viable car to use as a city runabout as described for the next ~4-5 years without too much worry from a battery standpoint, or should I significantly plan for on-road failures/stranding (aside from a potential "forgot to charge" scenario) ?
  2. Within LeafSpy screen 1, what is the difference between red bars and blue bars? My battery reports all red bars, with cell 42 and 48 as blue, but all cells generally and typically trend at what appears to be a low mV spread (10-25 mv).
  3. LeafSpy SOH is 68.23%, with the Hx at 36.83%. From review of a few posts here, I may need to be concerned or at least wary of the low Hx, and the large difference between SOH and Hx. For the vehicle age, is this reasonable, or should I be watching for an upcoming cliff where the HV battery just crashes out?
  4. I don't believe that I need a L2 charger at home for my use case; typically spare vehicles available, and with regular overnight charging, I think I'd be OK, but I'd love any commentary from this group as to considerations I should take on L1 vs L2 charging.

A few LeafSpy screenshots are attached. the 18mV cell delta is the vastly typical screen under most driving conditions with mV ranging between 10-30 in operation, and 10-20 when at rest. The 77mV and 303mV were captured from a screen recording while driving. These were near instantaneous readings, dropped immediately, and correlated to heavy acceleration/load testing.

So Reddit community - what say you? Should I expect this to be a suitable town runabout for awhile, or am I gonna need to go pick up stranded kids from the side of the road this winter (or next)?

I don't think I'll be tackling a battery replacement; but feel free to convince me otherwise!

New US and Canadian CHAdeMO chargers in August and September 2026

Whoops! Seems I forgot to post a CHAdeMO report last month.

Here's a combined list of new and updated CHAdeMO stations in August and September. Hope you find it useful.

We all know these are for pre-2026 Nissan Leafs. And that one lone guy, somewhere in the vastness of North America, who actually fast charges his Mitsubishi hybrid. So I'll spare you the long prologue.

Enjoy!

EV system warning light, possibly after fast charging

My husband drove our 2016 Leaf today and had to use a fast charger while he was out. Afterwards on his way home he noticed this light on. I'm going to book an appointment to have it looked at but did I hear something about fast charging damaging them?

Question on potential BMS reset

I have a very degraded 2016 24 kWh Leaf in Tucsonz AZ but it largely meets distance needs for what I think was a fair price.

I know the battery is bad and I'm not expecting a BMS reset to magically restore capacity. I'm trying to figure out whether the BMS has become badly calibrated. We have hot summers here. I was concerned that the heat would continue to do its thing, but to my surprise during the summer months my guess o meter and battery percent consumption seemed consistent. I noticed in September that seemed to change after it started to cool down so I did a new reading.

LeafSpy history:

May: 38.76% SOH / 22.3 Ah

Sept: 27.3% / ~17 Ah

Now: 25.03% / 15.54 Ah

The weird part is SOC, but maybe I don't understand how it works.

Recently the dashboard showed about 10%, while LeafSpy showed 21.5%. I then drove 3.9 miles at low speed(wife took the car out without realizing it didn't charge overnight) and LeafSpy only dropped to 16.1%. Cell spread was still only 44 mV.

Last night the dashboard showed 21%, while LeafSpy showed 39.3%. Cells averaged 3.952V with only a 33 mV spread.

Just as an observation I noticed that that the first 100- 50% drains significantly faster than the 50-20ish range which is usually as low as I take it.

I then measured charging from the wall:

21% → 72% dashboard: 2.04 kWh

72% → 100%: another 1.78 kWh

So only 3.82 kWh from the wall took the dashboard from 21% to 100%, and my understanding is actual energy reaching the battery would be less after charging losses. And my capacity is apparently in the 6.5ish kWh capacity.

The pack seems extremely degraded but reasonably balanced. I don't see an obvious cell falling off a cliff.

Would you reset the BMS at this point and let it relearn the battery? I'm fine with SOH/bars being wrong for a while afterward. I'm mainly interested in whether a relearn might make SOC more representative of actual usable energy.

Northbound:

I planned the trip beforehand using PlugShare.

I could have skipped the stop at Buttonwillow and charged more in Kettleman.

I knew about the out-of-order situation of the chargers at the NB rest stop, but stopped there anyways just to see. I then doubled back to the SB rest top to charge (you had to do that, anyways, to reach the rest stop). I slept for 6 hours at the rest stop. I charge both before and after sleeping there.

Berkeley Visit:

I arrived at my destination in Berkeley with about 6% remaining on the GOM. After settling in, I had one EVgo session to have energy to get around.

Southbound:

I strictly used Google Maps to plan my trip and stops to see what it would be like not to use PlugShare.

Google Maps mostly worked out, but it scheduled me to stop at the Lebec Rest Stop which was closed. It then recommended an EVgo stop in Valencia which I missed because I misunderstood what it was telling me, so it then recommended the EVgo in Sun Valley.

While on the way to the EVgo in Sun Valley, Google made it seem like there was a free DCFC nearby, so I added that as a stop. It turned out that one was not available to the public, so I then went to the EVgo for the final charge. During this segment, my SoC on the GOM went blank indicating that I was on fumes (static?).

Total Cost/Efficiency:

Thanks to the free charging provided by Caltrans, the total charging cost was $45.16 for this 810 mile trip -- 5.5 cents/mile.

I drove mostly around 60-65 mph, sometimes 70 and rarely above that. I also allowed the car's ACC to pace after slower trucks, so there were stretches of being around 55 (with a few moments being even slower).

I was "drafting" the trucks at the ACC's 3-bar (max distance) setting. No idea how much, if any, that helped.

The car reported 3.7 miles/kWh efficiency. Calculated is ~3.55. This discrepancy is probably due to charging losses.

Sleeping in the LEAF:

So it turns out that unlike in many of the videos that I've seen about camping out in the LEAF, I don't have to fold either of the front seats fully back to create a long-enough space for me to sleep.

Instead, I scooted the driver's seat forward until I could place my suitcase behind it, and then placed a oversized suitcase to fill the "well" in the trunk area, creating the mostly-flat area to place my seeping pad. I had my pillow (gray pillow in the photo) over the small gap between the folded rear-seat and the suitcase (where the headrest can be seen in the photo). That worked out totally fine.

I did try putting up some fabric to keep the lights out. I need a better system to make that easier and more light-proof. There is a lot of light at the rest stop.

Battery fluctuating wildly

I wonder if someone can help me?

We bought a used 2020 leaf back in ‘23 with 40k on the clock. Everything was going well until this last month. When the range is around 50 miles the percentage fluctuates all over the place, especially on the motorway! Last night it went into turtle mode with what was 15 miles range left before it kicked in. My wife just made it home.

Battery capacity is still showing full bars and I’ve already seen on here this is most likely a bad cell and not covered under warranty.

I will try with Nissan obviously, but my concern is they say no and we are stuck with it. We absolutely cannot afford a new car right now, given we are still paying for the leaf until 2028!

It’s only a daily 20 mile commuter for my wife. I guess my longwinded question is, can I keep running the car, charging at home and expect it to survive the next 2 years? - or will this get progressively worse as the months go on?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Forget the economics of owning a used EV that has already taken the depreciation hit. It’s the ease of fitting almost anywhere I love

2023 S - HVAC Software Update (P6A16)

Just got this notice:

---
Summary

On certain MY2018-2025 Nissan LEAF vehicles, Nissan previously decided a service campaign to implement an HVAC software update to improve defroster performance. Nissan later learned that some customers who received the software update as part of the initial service campaign were experiencing insufficient heater performance under extremely cold conditions (below -10 C).

Risk

In these conditions, the HVAC system may continue to discharge cold air for approximately 120 seconds before heating performance recovers. If the HVAC On/Off or HEAT On/Off switch is toggled during this period, the reduced-heating condition may be extended by an additional 120 seconds for each switch toggle.

Remedy

The dealer will reprogram the HVAC Control Unit with the latest software.
---

I've read quite a few horror stories about the (previous?) HVAC software update P4A17 causing the heater to not work anymore at all, leaving drivers stuck in the cold in the middle of winter. Has anyone had this service performed and noticed any issues with it?

I'm kind of tempted to just ignore it, since the problematic conditions seem way too rare and transitional to risk breaking a thing that currently works just fine. The last thing I want to do is have this thing serviced and it turning into a whole mess to sort out. Based on the above thread the last time this happened Nissan just went "oh well, too bad so sad!" and sat on their hands for 2 years...

Warning light not going away after fixing the issue

Hello,

I am very new to cars and this is my fist car.

I own a Nissan leaf 2013 model. It's old but has been working just fine for me for 2 years now. Recently I got an orange warning light on my dashboard. It's the one with an exclamation point on a car. I went to a Nissan workshop and they did diagnostics, and found out that water pump 1 must be changed. They quoted me a price that's more than what the car is worth so I declined, but brought the diagnostics to another workshop who changed it for a fraction of the price. I bought an brought in the water pump linked below which should work with my car according to the specifications.

https://www.eurodel.no/vannpumpe-motorkjoling-gates-41607e

When the new workshop changed the water pump, the warning light didn't go away. They said that it might be because the part I bought isn't an original Nissan part, but that essentially as long as the warning light is there the new water pump isn't working. Now none of the workshops are taking ownership of the issue and I'm left with a car that I'm scared to drive.
Any ideas?

Nissan’s (unwanted) windfall of LEAFs…

Any idea what Nissan is doing with all the cars they’ve had to buy back? It seems like all of a sudden they’ve got quite a few parts cars on hand. My 2020 SL+ passed its recall test (for now), but I’ve definitely got a case of plunging indicated SOC due to at least two weak cells dragging the whole thing down. Really I’m just hoping (beyond hope) that they’ll be able to swap in some stronger cells…

Also, on an unrelated note, Nissan should have called the car the Datsun TWIG.

Leaving 2026 Nissan Leaf Charged at 100% for 12 Hours?

I am leaving for a trip early in the morning but I am using the public chargers in my apartment that charges $3 if I keep it charging for more than 4 hours. Would I hurt the battery from leaving it sitting topped off for 12 hours at 100%

There is no update and the app stays in that loop…

Edit: as of 10am EST, the app does seem to have updated after a reinstall and is working now. Version 8.0.6.

What's the future of CHAdeMO charging in Europe/Switzerland?

I'm currently considering a 2020/2021 Leaf with the 62kwh battery as about 95% city run around car with the once every 2 month 200km one way trip to visit relatives and maybe the occasional longer road trip. I know the passive cooling and fast charging restricts long stretches but i'm more concerned about the CHAdeMO charging port becoming rarer every year in Switzerland/Europe as manufacturers move towards CCS. I would mostly charge at home so it's not the biggest daily concern.

I want to keep the car for around 10 years and whilst I don't think the charger will disappear, I just don't want companies to systematically stop supporting them then suddenly public charging becomes more of a pain having to search for available and functional chargers, rather than a seamless affair. Currently it still seems that providers are predominantly supporting them, but i'm worred that in the next 5ish years is the critical mass where more companies suddenly start discontinuing CHAdeMO. Yes I know there are adapters but various brands seem to have problems with some charging stations.

What are our thoughts on the future of CHAdeMO that could maybe quell my fears of charging a Leaf in public in the next 10 years? Or are we expecting adapters to iron out all their problems?

I don't want to keep it as a run around only and buy a 2nd car in the future as I really don't need a 2nd car and my budget currently restricts a new Leaf with CCS.

Thanks team. This would be my first EV purchase so i'm naturally quite nervous yet, excited.
