Mod Post Update to self promotion rule

Hello all, after quite some time I have decided to reevaluate, the old rule preventing sales posts and self-promotion. The rationale behind the change is that the makers will benefit from community support. There has been hesitation to change the rule based on the idea that sales post will run rampant if allowed; however, I have some requests in exchange for those who want to post a link to their website.

All criteria must be met.

  1. Items for sale have to be made by you.
  2. There is a detailed specification list for the item being displayed. you can find an example here, does not have to be as in depth; however, at a minimum you have to have steel type(s) and handle material(s). Simply stating damascus will not be enough for future posts.
  3. Only knives and supplies related to knife making can be sold. You can sell knives, handles, scales, or handle materials. As a reminder, you cannot sell items that are not made by you; you cannot sell a bench grinder here.
  4. There is no price displayed. Pricing cannot be discussed in public whatsoever.
  5. You must be active in the post you make. You cannot just drop your website link and disappear. I am not asking that you respond to every comment on your post or that you reply to a comment on a month-old post; however, some effort must be put in.

There are a few additional limitations to this change

  1. Do not put "available" or anything of the likes in your title. All indications of your work being for sale must be in the description or comments, I suggest the latter as I will remove your entire post if you do not meet the above criteria if it is in the description rather than just deleting a comment
  2. Your posts should not all be advertisements; you should show off your work without all your posts having a link to your website.

I hope that this change to the rule is favorable, if you have feedback or comments, I would like to hear it and may make changes accordingly.

(Not an Esee).... Sooo that junglas I was building for myself..... It got knocked off the hook it was hanging on.... Was letting the oil soak into the oxides.

Question How does one achieve a rainbow patina and what metal was used?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I know titanium and aluminum can achieve this but this does not look like anodizing it looks either chemical or heat induced or maybe both? It has purple, red, yellow, blue, and greens and has a wrought iron cladding with a 80CRV2 core but I want to know what’s the cladding line made of?
Not trying to replicate this process btw I’m trying to see if was produced on an iron cladding line or if it’s a different metal, if it’s something other than iron I can’t use this process anyway. Got it from a post a few years ago and was just wondering if anyone knows the science behind it.

Showcase “Rusty Blues”

Recently finished this blade for a family member.

Metal is 1095 high carbon steel, textured and blued. Handle is Chechen wood, that’s been torched. Blue G10 liners, black carbon fiber pins, and a kydex sheath make this a great daily task blade. 😎🔪

66 layer random pattern Damascus. Just out of the temper. I'll need to thin the edge more and start the handle. No hand sanding yet, this was machine finished with scotchbrite belts.

Showcase Piccadura: the traditional zigzag pattern on the ring of a Sardinian resolza, done on the finished knife

This is the piccadura, the traditional pattern on the ring of the resolza, the folding knife of Pattada in Sardinia. It's one of the most delicate steps in our workshop: it's done on the finished knife and takes a lot of experience and practice.

Happy to answer questions about the process.

Question KMG MOAG Mother of all Grinders

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hello. This is somewhat random but looking for any sort of insight as I am clueless when it comes to any sort of metal work. My dad was a scrimshander/bulino engraver/knife maker and he passed away two years ago. I now have his MOAG sitting in my garage. It is so heavy, I don’t think I could list it online and ship it. I need to get rid of this thing. What type of person would use this grinder? I’m located in Wisconsin and marketplace has gotten me nowhere. I just need to get rid of it and am willing to let it go for cheap to someone who will appreciate it. Thank you for reading and I’ll appreciate any advice on who to market this to.

Bought myself another knife making course (this is getting expensive).

1st course was a few years ago - gift voucher Christmas present.

This time was a 3 day course. 3 different instructors, mainly due to their work patterns.

I think it turned out ok.

Showcase Been playing around with my new 3"x 2" muffle pipe in my forge today.. It makes an insane difference for HT.. If you're HT in a forge.. Just get one.. Very even heat up on the blank and temp control is much more manageable.. Almost no scale after even without charcoal..

Question I want to start but don't know how to.

So all I have is an angle grinder, a power drill, a pair of tinted safety glasses, and a random hammer. Also a 300 dollar budget. Instead of a belt grinder, would a worksharp mk.2 work nicely? My budget is limited. Also, what else do you recommend I buy? I just want to make some small fixed blades. Also, is 1084 steel with g-10 handles a good start, or should I change the configuration?
