Mod Post Update to self promotion rule

Hello all, after quite some time I have decided to reevaluate, the old rule preventing sales posts and self-promotion. The rationale behind the change is that the makers will benefit from community support. There has been hesitation to change the rule based on the idea that sales post will run rampant if allowed; however, I have some requests in exchange for those who want to post a link to their website.

All criteria must be met.

  1. Items for sale have to be made by you.
  2. There is a detailed specification list for the item being displayed. you can find an example here, does not have to be as in depth; however, at a minimum you have to have steel type(s) and handle material(s). Simply stating damascus will not be enough for future posts.
  3. Only knives and supplies related to knife making can be sold. You can sell knives, handles, scales, or handle materials. As a reminder, you cannot sell items that are not made by you; you cannot sell a bench grinder here.
  4. There is no price displayed. Pricing cannot be discussed in public whatsoever.
  5. You must be active in the post you make. You cannot just drop your website link and disappear. I am not asking that you respond to every comment on your post or that you reply to a comment on a month-old post; however, some effort must be put in.

There are a few additional limitations to this change

  1. Do not put "available" or anything of the likes in your title. All indications of your work being for sale must be in the description or comments, I suggest the latter as I will remove your entire post if you do not meet the above criteria if it is in the description rather than just deleting a comment
  2. Your posts should not all be advertisements; you should show off your work without all your posts having a link to your website.

I hope that this change to the rule is favorable, if you have feedback or comments, I would like to hear it and may make changes accordingly.

Finished up the Warden, SK-033, from my shop, Skelton Knives.

The goal was a substantial working knife with a clean profile, comfortable handle contours, and straightforward materials.

• Steel: 80CrV2

• Blade length: 6"

• Overall length: 10.5"

• Finish: 800-grit machine satin

• Handle: Black canvas Micarta with black G10 liners

• Hardware: Stainless pins and lanyard tube

• Full-tang construction; heat treated in-house

What do you think of the overall proportions and handle shaping?

Question Quality 1x30" belts in europe?

Hello everyone, I recently got one of those Vevor compact 1x30 belt sanders and am struggling now to find good belts. I got some P400/600/2500 3M Trizacts at a reasonable price but no chance to getting lower grits. Order start at 30 pieces upwards which is way too much for me as a hobbyist.

Does anyone know a shop that has lower quantities of P120/240?

I’m making a Punch knife out of 80crv2 for a fighter from the gym I train at. I got everything roughed out but I don’t know what I wanna do for the handle. I’m thinking ram horn since his nickname is “black sheep” but I don’t know for sure. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Question What do I need in a Bevel jig?

• Upvotes

While I know a lot here recommends freehanding alone, I would like to either make or buy a jig to help me along, especially on very slim kitchen knives.

Through work I have access to more or less every generalized manufacturing method, and would therefore like to go all out (especially since it’ll probably be cheaper than a regular bought one from china).

But what do I need? Does it even make sense to spend the time designing? For what I imagine I at least need a way to accurately adjust angle, along with accurately flipping the blade to make both bevels even.

How does your dream beveling jig look like?

Work in progress Samurai & Geisha Laser Engraving on Titanium Scales – Noblie WIP

A little WIP update from our Noblie workshop. We're working on a new folding knife with a Damasteel blade and a Japanese-inspired design featuring a samurai and a geisha.

Getting the colors and fine details right took some trial and error. We had to make 4–5 test engravings on titanium plates, adjusting the laser settings each time, before we got the result we were after. Here are the finished titanium scales. Next step is assembling the knife. Each of these designs is a one-off, so we won't be repeating this particular engraving.

What do you guys think of the result?

Question Damascus question

So I had an idea of something to do with my off cuts and that is engraving and then soldering/brazing a different color metal like bronze into the engraving. My question is, will heating it during the brazing ruin the etch?
A further question is am I going to lose some of the contrast in the etch by not heat treating the steel? Because I know I’m not going to be able to hit those temps after the brazing… the filler metal would just melt out. I’m a complete novice to this so any feedback or advice would be appreciated.

Question Morakniv handle modification

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello friends, I have no experience in knife making, only some rudimentary skills in sharpening.

This year I shot a very nice Roe Buck and I'd love to use the antlers as a knife handle.

I was thinking using a morakniv companion I have left.

Would someone describe to me the general steps for this process? What tools do I need, is it difficult, what side do I attach the tang to the antlers, can they be sanded, cut, what do I need to pay attention to?

Thanks very much.

Work in progress WIP – Testing engraving colors for a custom knife project

A little WIP from our Noblie workshop. We usually make 5–6 test engravings to dial in the settings and get the colors right before moving on to the actual knife parts. The tricky part is making sure all the colors, contrast, and small details work well together. What looks good on one test doesn't always look right in the full design. Still experimenting with this one.

Question Thoughts on using a diamond file as first stage of hand sanding?

Post image
7 Upvotes

My belt grinder unfortunately is not variable speed… I use water misting to keep my knife cool but it’s hard getting my knives right down to 0.2-0.4 mm thick at the edge without burning…

What are your thoughts on whether a course diamond file would be like to thin the blade down that last bit before hand sanding?

Love how this baby came out. Gold Sheen is just the best… it’s smooth and predictable… at least this one was! A combination of English and American walnut compliments it perfectly!
