Publisher rejected. Game went viral.

Hey, I'm Ryn. I'm making a roguelike deckbuilder with a slot machine and a revolver. Yeah, it's weird. But this post isn't really about the game.

I've wanted to make games for years, but never had the time or money. I worked in IT, freelanced, and made tiny jam games by literally taking vacation days. I had one day off a week, and making games after work meant sacrificing sleep. Eventually I saved enough to survive for six months. Then I got laid off, and immediately started working on an old jam idea that had been stuck in my head.

After posting my first gameplay GIFs, a small publisher reached out just to say they'd keep an eye on the project. No offer, nothing. But for a nobody like me, that was enough encouragement to go all in.

I went completely insane. Posted videos on five platforms every day, begged developers to record their playthroughs, messaged Twitch streamers, and even traded localization, art, and music for honest feedback. I needed reality checks because working on your own game makes you blind to its problems.

I watched over 50 hours of people playing my game. Sometimes it was absolutely painful, sometimes I nearly cried from happiness. Worst TV show of my life.

Two months later, I had a solid prototype, a tutorial, metaprogression, and an art direction I loved. But most importantly, people were actually helping me make it. Art, music, ideas, feedback. I even added quests, secrets, and metaprogression specifically for about TEN regular testers, just to keep them entertained while testing everything else :):):)

But savings don't last forever. So I started pitching. Jesus Christ, I think I've spent as much time on my pitch deck as on the game itself.

I wanted a small publisher that would appreciate the weird PSX-meets-Scooby-Doo vibe. Instead, my first batch of emails got one serious response, from a pretty big publisher I won't name.

Their first email said several people on the team loved the prototype. We exchanged messages, had a call, and planned to talk again after vacations, Gamescom, and all that. But during the call I felt almost no confidence in me or the game. Honestly, I wondered why they'd invited me at all.

And here's where I fucked up. Instead of trusting what I'd built, I started cutting mechanics, simplifying everything, trying to make the game less risky for them. I kept sending updated builds while we discussed budgets and timelines.

I asked for $25k to finish the game in seven months. I'd checked the timeline with an experienced developer who'd shipped a Steam hit, arranged the scope with freelance artists, and planned around Steam Next Fest. But somehow we spent ages discussing dates around their vacations and schedules.

And the terms? 100% recoup, then 60% to the publisher, 40% to me, plus shared IP ownership. I'm not joking.

Still, I was exhausted from pitching instead of making games. I just wanted to get back to work, so I kept waiting, sending updates, discussing details.

Eventually I had no money left for food, and my rent was overdue. I finally asked when we could sign the contract so I could start working full-time again.

I got a generic rejection.

I knew something was wrong long before that. I just couldn't understand what the hell we'd been doing all this time, or why I'd spent so much effort changing my game for someone who hadn't even agreed to publish it.

My mistake, I guess. First-time developer experience.

But on that exact same day, my game appeared in the popular roguelikes section and others tags on itch.io.

And from this point on, I have no words.

Gambleborn on itch.

Questions How long does it take for reporting reviews to take effect?

Post image
• Upvotes

My game is at 4 stars because it was review-bombed by this group of friends probably thinking that the reviews would be public which is why they would claim that I'm committing immoral crimes. Two of them didn't leave comments on the reviews, but here are the other two.

I reported them around the times they were made, so at least one of them has been up for over a year after being reported and nothing's happened with it.

I'm joining gamejams to improve my skills and learn everything about the pipeline to be a lil bit prepared when I go for a full commercial game. My posts on reddit/facebook/tiktok sometimes get a thousand likes but only like 5 people will actually try to finish my small game(according to my analytics).

Anyone started their gamedev career like this before and what's your journey been like? (Ignore the 25$ that's just from my supportive cousin)

Web PixelDrone — free pixel-art arcade beta: move your soldier, aim your drone, adapt to the tide

• Upvotes

I'm Onepixelsoft, and I've released a free browser beta of PixelDrone on itch.io, with a version you can also play inside Reddit.

The twist is that your soldier and armed drone are controlled separately. WASD or the arrow keys move the soldier; the mouse aims and fires the drone. Hide near trees, cars and buildings, then relocate when cover is destroyed or firing reveals you. The tide rises and falls, opening and closing routes across the island.

Matches are single-player against seven bots, up to 10 minutes or 30 takedowns. Collect dropped dollars to upgrade your character. Space jumps or dives, and Q/right-click switches weapons. There are 14 language options in Settings.

Play on itch.io (browser, no download):

https://onepixelsoft.itch.io/dronepixel

Play inside Reddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PixelDrone/comments/1xb37ed/pixeldrone_hide_aim_strike/

The image is actual gameplay from the current itch.io build. Development and promotion are AI-assisted; the game uses licensed pixel-art assets. It's still a beta, and I'd love to hear whether the separate controls, hiding and tide are clear. If Reddit's webview loads blank, the itch.io build is an alternative.

I'm a solo dev making a Heroes 3-style hex tactics game where your spells are cards you draw mid-battle. Free demo on itch

• Upvotes
Game Battle
Route Selection

Hi r/itchio! I'm a solo dev, and Century of Conquest is my love letter to Heroes of Might and Magic 3, with one twist: your hero's spells are a card deck.

How a battle plays

  • Classic initiative-based hex combat. Stacks of units, retaliation, morale and luck, ranged vs. melee, and HoMM3-style Wait
  • Your hero doesn't take turns. Instead, energy builds up as the fight goes on and you draw spell cards in real time, then cast them whenever you want
  • Fireballs, summons, polymorph, and a "Heed My Command!" card that lets you take direct control of one of your units
  • Weather and a day/night cycle change the battlefield mid-fight

Between battles

  • A branching run map with towns, shops, random events (bandits, tombs, a lake fairy who wants your favourite item…) and recruitable troops
  • Pick new spells after each victory, ban the ones you don't want from your deck, and level up your hero

The demo covers the first part of the campaign: roughly 40–60 minutes per run, Windows, 9 languages.

👉 Free demo: https://jerryttang.itch.io/century-of-conquest-demo

I'd love to hear what feels good, what's confusing, and whether the card system clicks for you or gets in the way of the tactics. Every comment gets read!

(If you end up liking it, the full game is on Steam: store page)

Sale 6,448 fantasy skill illustrations — heroes, monsters and magic on 404 PNG art boards

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! Here’s a look at Fantasy Skill Art — Complete Collection: 6,448 illustrations across 404 PNG art boards, covering skill designs for 806 characters.

From knights, archers and healers to demons, vampires, restless dead and forest spirits — here are some examples from the collection.

Each character has four skill concepts in two treatments: Character Action and Simple Symbol. That’s 3,224 concepts, each shown in two styles.

A closer look at spirits and spectral skill artwork:

What you receive: 404 original 1536 × 1024 PNG art boards with labels, frames and backgrounds, plus a character index. These are whole boards to crop and prepare for your project, not individually separated transparent icons. These previews show static artwork, not animated effects.

This is a paid collection, with no free sample. Browse the full artwork previews and get the collection here:

https://elie-automata.itch.io/fantasy-skill-art-6448-illustrations-complete-collection

Names match characters in Heroes & Adventurers, Cursed Woodland and Dread Realms. Character sprites are sold separately. Some matching skill boards are already included in updated character packs, so check what you own before buying.

Commercial and non-commercial use and modifications are allowed with credit to elie automata. No standalone resale or redistribution. Advertising watermarks are not added to the downloaded boards.

Disclosure: The artwork was created with generative AI; AI also assisted with the promotional text.

Sale 34 dark fantasy knights & warriors with matching skill art — 4 characters free

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’ve put together Dread Realms — Knights & Warriors: 34 characters and visual variants, from armored guardians to executioners and frost warriors, with matching skill artwork for every character.

Each character comes with eight static directional poses on transparent 64 × 64 PNG canvases — 272 sprite files in the full pack. The GIFs cycle through viewing directions; walk, attack and death animations are not included.

Alongside the sprites, each character has four skill concepts in two styles: Character Action and Simple Symbol. Here’s a closer look:

The skill artwork comes on 18 labeled PNG art boards, not as individually separated transparent icons. You can crop and prepare it for character panels, ability menus or skill trees. Skill art is static; gameplay effects and code aren’t included.

Want to try it first? The free sample includes Aristocratic Knight, Dread Knight, Headsman and Military Marshal: 32 directional sprite PNGs plus 4 matching skill art boards.

Download the free sample or browse the full pack:

https://elie-automata.itch.io/dread-realms-knights-warriors

Both versions allow commercial and non-commercial use and modifications, with credit to elie automata. No standalone redistribution or resale. The full pack includes the sample assets; downloaded files have no added advertising watermarks.

Disclosure: Generative AI was used in creating the artwork and assisting with the promotional text.

Which character would fit into your next project?

Announcements Our demo is almost ready

Hello everyone! Today I'm thrilled to announce that the demo of our game is almost finished—only a few minor improvements remain. After that, we will officially release it! This project was made possible thanks to PlayPixelDev. Not only did she contribute to writing the story, creating the characters, and composing the music, but she was also the actual developer of the game. I highly encourage you to visit her Reddit profile to learn more about the game. Before we say goodbye, here’s a quick question for you: if you were to create a story for a game of your own, what would it be about?"

Game How do you get noticed on itch?

I've been using itch.io as a platform for my games but nobody seems to stumble upon them. I really like the site, and uploading and updating games is super easy. I've heard people report decent traffic, so is there anything that I'm missing?

Free I made a Source style drop down dev console for Unity (free, open source)

Hi, this post is more related to devs here. While making games I kept needing to run a method by hand in play mode, and the usual options (keypress, [ContextMenu], editor scripts) are fine for a quick test but get annoying long term. So I made a drop down console, like the Source engine one.

How it works:

- Declare a public static readonly field and the command exists. No scene object, no list to maintain

- Suggestions as you type: "se pl he" finds set_player_health

- Typed arguments: string, int, float, bool, Vector3, enums

- Compiled out of release builds

It's free and the open source on GitHub.

Download: https://kureysalp.itch.io/unity-dev-console

If something is missing or broken or even a feature idea you think it might fit, tell me and I'll look at it.

I spent five years, which is a very long time, making this game. It got scrapped and redone from the bottom, up twice, and had about four or five rewrites.

I'm satisfied now. Mentally, I feel a lot more free.
Speaking of free- so is this game! I'd love for some folks to try out this wacky art styled game and give me a holler how it feels. Thank you~

Cowboy Life: Street Outlaw is an action-packed 3D low-poly open-world sandbox game where classic Western cowboy themes merge with high-speed modern vehicle exploration. Built to run directly inside any modern web browser via WebGL without requiring heavy downloads or installations, the game offers immediate, smooth browser-based gameplay. Players are dropped into a sprawling desert map filled with winding mountain passes, highways, and rugged Western camps. You can cruise through the desert terrain driving high-performance sports cars, manage your inventory with an active hotbar, and test out various shooter mechanics and weapons. Designed as an open-world sandbox experience, it provides a fast-loading, lightweight environment focused on driving mechanics, exploration, and sandbox freedom. I am actively seeking player feedback, suggestions, and bug reports to help guide future updates!

NEW Sabre Wulf C64 Remaster (2026) | Ultimate’s 1984 Classic Gameplay & ...

Thumbnail
youtube.com
1 Upvotes

Sabre Wulf Remaster is a port and remaster of Ultimate Play The Game’s 1984 ZX Spectrum classic, made for the Commodore 64 by Sveinacious-G and published on itch.io in October 2026.

The original was designed by Tim and Chris Stamper. The developer’s aim is to reproduce the Spectrum game as faithfully as possible while improving it where it makes sense. All the original features, creatures and mechanics are kept, right down to the spawn rate of each monster and item. The page highlights two ideas the original introduced. Enemies keep tracking you beyond your visual boundaries, and the world is large and interconnected, with your final destination visible from the very start.

The remaster uses the Commodore 64’s sprites and sound hardware to run much smoother than the original. The framerate is mostly stable at 50 frames per second on PAL systems and 60 on NTSC. The palette has been reworked to look rich and saturated on the C64, and there is a selectable alternative palette with a more subdued, dusky look.

A ZX Spectrum palette is also included for people who prefer the original colours. At one point I saw we will switch to the palette and we actually keep the Commodore one before playing a third game with the dusky look as shown on the title card.
