News Subreddit changes and new moderation

34 Upvotes

Hi, I have recently become an additional mod for this subreddit. Firstly thanks u/scislac for approving me.

I've made a few small changes to start off with that I think are small enough to not cause any trouble/warrant community approval, though if there are comments about this please reach out.

  • Images embedded into comments now enabled: Now you don't have to link externally to attach images. Hopefully this should make it much easier to solve help requests with visual info.
  • Post flairs now enabled: For a while the pinned post from 10 years ago said to prefix help posts with [HELP]. A lot of the responses to this said that post flairs should be used instead, which I agree with. This has been superceded with post flairs which for now are mandatory (I think this isn't too intrusive but will consider any feedback). I've added a few categories, such as:
    • Help - for all help requests
    • Solved - for when a suitable solution has been found for a help request. Generally you wouldn't make a new post with this flair, but for changing a Help-flaired post afterwards when the OP no longer requires help.
    • Showcase - For showcasing your finished work
    • Tips & Tricks - Sharing knowledge and tutorials
    • Meta - For community suggestions and stuff related to the subreddit; comments about the software; memes; catch-all for things that don't fit in the other categories
    • News - Interesting news about inkscape; version releases, etc.
  • Update to rule 4: I have included AI-generated responses as examples of possible low effort comments. They aren't specifically disallowed, but now it is the commenter's responsibility to ensure the accuracy and relevancy of the information. The response must directly address the help request, and must not contain incorrect or "hallucinated" information.
  • u/litelinux and u/Xrott have also become moderators.

Please let me know if there are any issues regarding these changes or if you want anything else changed. I'll also consider revamping the look, for example adding a banner image. There will soon also be some optional user flairs available.

Help I hope you can help me

5 Upvotes

Hi. I don't know if you can help me in this group but I hope so. I purchased a PS5 controller skin file on Etsy and used Inkscape to insert my own images, creating a custom skin. I was able to do this in Inkscape because I couldn't manage it in Silhouette Studio (I have a Cameo 5). Now, I need to move the file into Silhouette Studio to print and cut it. However, when I export it as a PNG (which I believe is the only option for Studio), the quality drops. How can I fix this? I ran a test, but: 1) the images lose quality during this process; 2) the dimensions of the pieces aren't correct, and I don't know where or how to adjust them; Can anyone help me? This is a project that means a lot to me. Thank you! ❤️

Help How to warp text to the shape of an object?

Post image

Is there any fast way how to do that? I want to not just narrow the text, but also curve it slightly at the sides. As you can see, I tried using the Envelop Deformation, but no matter how hard I try, I can't get the result I want.

Help Help converting 600dpi (A4) SVG image to PDF

1 Upvotes

Due to the fact that I cannot get the, yes I'm I dinosaur, green double zebra paper that was used in the, well a long time ago, mainframe world to print listings, I've recreated my own, using 2400 dpi scans of the original, and for those of you who want or need it, the svg is dead simple,

 <!-- Zebra lines -->
 <!-- =========== -->

 <g id="r1"> <!-- Thin Zebra gradient -->
  <rect style="fill:#dcfde5" width="3236" height="1" x="0" y="0" />
 </g>

 <g id="d1"> <!-- Top/bottom Zebra line -->
  <use  xlink:href="#r1" x="0" y="0" />
  <rect style="fill:#c6fdd5" width="3236" height="7" x="0" y="1" />
  <use  xlink:href="#r1" x="0" y="8" />
 </g>

 <g id="d2"> <!-- Intermediate Zebra line -->
  <use  xlink:href="#r1" x="0" y="0" />
  <rect style="fill:#c6fdd5" width="3236" height="3" x="0" y="1" />
  <use  xlink:href="#r1" x="0" y="4" />
 </g>

 <g id="d3"> <!-- Full Zebra -->
  <use xlink:href="#d1" x="0" y="0"  />
  <use xlink:href="#d2" x="0" y="20" />
  <use xlink:href="#d2" x="0" y="39" />
  <use xlink:href="#d2" x="0" y="58" />
  <use xlink:href="#d1" x="0" y="74" />
 </g>

I use(d) it to make summary papers of my r/hitchhiking notes, and now, with a bit of help of Google's (rather sycophantic, sheesh...) AI mode I've actually created some REXX code that puts the summaries on it, and that works flawlessly. The forms are created at a resolution of 600 dpi (over the top) and are to be converted to PDF for A4 sized paper, (297x210 mm, or 7015x4960px), and that's were I'm completely stuck, whatever I try in the various Save As and export dialogs results in a PDF of 1m85x1m31(ish), and the only very roundabout way of getting them is to export the file to a PNG, open that in a browser, and print the result to a PDF (which was also suggested by Google...)

Can anyone here tell me the correct/better way to do this?

I've uploaded a sample of what I'm creating on my website as 333.svg and for those interested in how I generate them, here's the generating REXX exec, on request I can supply an input file for it, DM me.

And yes, I delete all id's (and other "nonsense") that Inkscape generates, and if anyone knows how to prevent Inkscape from adding this stuff in the first place, I'd love to hear how.

Showcase There was no way to downsample images when exporting a PDF in Inkscape, so I built an extension

28 Upvotes

i often export documents with a lot of high-res images (photos, renders, storyboard panels) to PDF and Inkscape writes huge files, 126 MB for a single page with 12 images in my test... Cairo embeds the rasters with little or no lossy compression, and there's no option in the PDF export to set a target image resolution.

so i made a small extension: Export Lightweight PDF. Go to Extensions > Export > Export Lightweight PDF, pick a resolution preset (SD, Screen, Draft, HD, Print, or a custom scale/DPI) and the JPEG quality, and it exports the PDF and recompresses the images to that resolution. Vector paths, text, fonts and layout stay untouched.

  • exports current page, all pages, the whole drawing or only the selection
  • optional text to paths
  • transparent images are split into a JPEG + alpha mask so transparency stays clean
  • reports size before and after (my 126 MiB test file went down to 108 KiB at the SD preset, but it depends a lot on the images)

Free and open source (GPL-2.0-or-later), needs Inkscape 1.2+ and Ghostscript. Tested on 1.4 on Linux.

AI disclosure (rule 8): This is made with AGY CLI following my instructions.

feedback welcome, it's my third inkscape extension 🙂

Help Text is gray when it should be black

2 Upvotes

I can't find anything that would seem to solve this, but the color is constantly grayed out no matter the color, as if I had the opacity at like 50%. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and it did nothing. Thing is, it looks fine when I change the display mode to outline. What the hell do I do?

Showcase Geothermal Module for Watts Ahead - Puzzle Management Game

Post image
29 Upvotes

This the Geothermal Module or also called Geo Module.

This can be deployed on specific tiles that have an access to the deep ground so we can use geothermal energy to produce electricity.

This is one of the four modules used in my 2D isometric turn-based puzzle management game called Watts Ahead.

Help inkscape plugin for draftsight?

3 Upvotes

I have to use draftsight for work, but it sucks. Draftsight does handle svg imports, but its not a full implementation of the svg format, it can only really handle paths. I havent worked out exactly what svg elements it can, or can not process.

Anyhow, Im looking for an inkscape plug-in to convert inkscape drawings to svgs that draftsight can handle. if such a think exists, I really want to know about it.

Help Sometimes nodes can't be moved

18 Upvotes

Sometimes when I’m tracing an object with the Pen Tool, this happens. All the other nodes work fine, but I can’t edit this part. None of the tools seem to do anything.

Why does this happen, and how do I fix it?

Solved What is the difference between ID, Label, and Title, & why do none of them affect the name of the shape in Layers and Objects?

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

Google's AI did answer this, but it also implied that changing the label would also change the name of it under Layers and Objects. And as you can see: changing the label does nothing to change how it is named under layers and objects. So I'll consider it's information dubious.

I'm at the stage where actually naming everything would be useful, so knowing what the difference is actually are would come in handy. I did notice that changing the name of the object in layers and objects does change the label, but why would vice versa not apply?

When I tried looking up tutorials I only got things for making labels, but nothing about the differences between these three things.

Thank you in advance!

Solved How to create a graph in Inkscape?

6 Upvotes

I'd like to create a graph (nodes and lines) in Inkscape. But there's no way to add a line between two existing nodes as far as I know. And if I try to draw two lines with the bezier tool that end on the same points, then use the node tool to drag a selection box around the overlapping node and select "Join selected nodes" from the toolbar, the two nodes still remain separate. So if I move one node, the other line doesn't move with it. How can I achieve a connected graph with no duplicate nodes please?

Help What does converting from RGB to CMYK mean in practice? (For printing)

9 Upvotes

With my SVG open and a colour displayed with RGB I can just press a button in the Fill and it shows me the same colour but with different numbers for CMYK.

For example the orange of this sub is RGB: 255 / 135 / 23 so if I create a rectangle in Inkscape and make it that orange I can then click the option changer which tells me that in CMYK it's 0 / 47 / 91 / 0. I've not meaningfully converted anything or changed anything as it's very togglable.

Screenshot of two identical orange rectangles labelled RGB and CMYK. Below each is the numbers relating to the colour palette. The RGB one is described as 255 Red, 135 Green and 23 Blue. The CMYK one is described as 0 for both Cyan and Black and 47 for Magenta and 91 for Yellow.

If I want to export my orange rectangle either as a PNG or PDF and send to a printer who wants CMYK only, do I need to do anything special to it before exporting? Printers' websites talk about converting colours to CMYK which suggests a degree of effort beyond pressing a button. Or can just write down the numbers and send those?

Thanks!
Jo

Showcase Hydro Deployable Module in Inkscape with very simple shapes

Post image
28 Upvotes

Now comes the time of the hydro module I created using Inkscape. I took inspitation from lot of Pinterest images.

This represetns a hydro module that you can deploy and produce clean energy using the tides and the watter currents.

It's part of my latest game, a 2D turn-based puzzle management game called Watts Ahead, where you have to use those clean energy modules to power human settlements on a distant planet.
