Do I want a travel partner for a trip from Faro towards Belgistan or the Netherlands?
To be quite honest, I don't know. Today my wife has executed her threat to buy me a one-way ticket to Faro, I'll be flying out from Eindhoven on Monday 9 November at 19:20, arriving in Faro at 21:20, with at least one night there, I don't mind hitching at night, but doing so in a place where I've never been is even for me a no-no. (And if Faro isn't interesting, on 3 November I will stick out my thumb here in Vilnius to hitch to NL!)
So what's the plan? In 2008 I hitched with a friend from Porto back to Luxembourg in just over two-and-a-half days, this time I would like to do it in no more than four days, because I also want to go through Andorra, and get a ride with someone from Andorra in Andorra, two buckets that still need kicking.
I'll be travelling very light, just a daypack with the essentials, and maybe a small sleeping bag, but I might end up sleeping in petrol stations, if they're open 24 hours, no clue how that will work out in Spain.
If you are a woman, two guys tend to go slow, and probably even more so in Spain, feel free to get in touch. I'm male, 66, a grandfather of four, had my first ride in 1978, and have recorded almost every ride since 1980, the exceptions being the ones I got as a student and while doing my national service. This trip has been on my "to-do" list for a long time, in the early 2000's I had registered for the Faro to Riga race, but thanks to an issue with the free mailing list software the organisers used the people on the bottom half of the mailing list never got any emails. I would prefer to hitch with someone who's not a complete newbie, but if you are I'm willing to listen.
I am not on any (anti-)social media and I am not interested in anyone who sees this trip as an opportunity to market themselves, I hitch to meet people, sometimes they're interesting, sometimes, you sit silently next to someone for a an hour or even longer, and will still have a smile on my face after waiting for a few hours, this year I had a 6:51 wait in Germany.
I do have a website where I occasionally write something about my trips. Add "indezzy.html" to the URL for the rather more extended version.
And finally, since I started recording my rides, the tally has reached 7,056. Of those just 248 were with real partners, no people I met and shared just a few rides with while on the road, having company would be fun, but I'm just as comfortable hitching alone. As for my previous travel partners, you can read a bit about them by following the links on the extended version of my homepage, the last one was a disaster trip-wise (we got back after closing time in a race), but Delphine and I had a great day!
