Dirty Kids, I'm calling you out.
I'm tired of my friends dying. In dreams, my companions move easily in bodies that have been cared for. They're covered in scrapes and bruises and grease, but free from track marks. Empty stomachs, but healthy livers. Tired eyes, but good teeth. Then I wake up to the sharp morning and my road dawg is shaking for a beer.
I'm tired of hospitals and trash at the hopout and stolen packs and animal cruelty. I miss the musicians who travel just to play, the healers who roam to stay sane. I miss the free spirits who manage to find freedom from their own vices.
This is a call, dearest dirty kids. I've been where you are and I've seen why it's hard and no, I don't always do it right either. I can do better. We can do better. We've got to try. We've got to keep this thing alive and keep ourselves alive. We've got to get up and get over our hangups and pull you outta the ditch so that you'll be there to do the same when I'm slaggin.
We've got to hold these secrets and this way of living and somehow still share it with the next wave, finding the diamonds who'll take these rough reigns and keep riding this horse to Anywhere.
Anywhere, kids! Y'heard me? You might have lived there so long you take it for granted, but that place saved my life, and there are others who need to see it too.
So here's to fewer blown up Wal-Marts and more doing dishes for the person housing us up. Here's to fewer dope missions and more 2AM missions across town to drag a couch back to the hopout. Fewer dirty rigs under the bridge, and more sharpie poems on the wall. Steal less Dramamine and more spray paint.
Use what you've got.
Use what you've got.
Use what you've GOT!
I love you scumy freeloading freedom fighters until the end. We need you in this world. We need to run into you again after 8 months of not knowing what happened to you. We need you when we've been stuck walking for days and no one is picking us up and we're feeling real down, and all the sudden we see your tag and know that we're not alone. If you were here to tag it and still somehow made it out of this hell, we can too. We need that random message out of the blue. Keep sending it, and we'll do the same for you.
This is a call, friends. Life has been good to me lately, and my door is open while I have one. When I head back to Anywhere, my smokes and my cans of beans are ours to share. Stay alive and I'll see you out there.
Peaceably,
-Tall Sam Jones

Yo wtf is up with all the nasty comments? Feels like this place has slowly been invaded by folks that just hate vagabonds/homeless/unhoused/whatevtf, for a while.
I'm not on the road myself now, maybe down the line once I finally sort out a whole buncha shit I can't bail on. Its really tempting sometimes, anyway, really i've just enjoyed reading this place for years now and it seems like there's a lot of just fuckin' dumb hate and bullshit lately. It sucks. Why the fuck are people coming here to talk down on people so much? I get the shit that's slinged at kids and jackasses saying how they're gonna hit the road with ridiculous ideas and plans, or theyre roleplaying, that's expected It hink. Anyway, is it just me? Or are there a bunch of assholes? is r/vagabond just making it to a lot more people's feed? Anyway, rant fuckin' over.

What's the plan for later in life?
My good friend from high school lives this lifestyle, he loves it. However, him and I invested in Bitcoin a long time ago, he sold his and bought a cheap condo cash that he uses as home base and has a bit in the market to gain some value for when he gets older.
Obviously that is very rare, so do you think about what you'll do once you get too old to hitchhike or trainsurf? As you get older, you get health complications that may prevent you from doing this. Do you have a general plan, do you just not think about it?
I see my friend a few months out of the year (during the colder months), I love hearing about where he's been and things he's done.

Other Really struggling to get going again
My life motto is try to live by is "if youre too scared to do it, then do it scared". Ive lived this life before, traveling and being a homebum multiple times.
Im 27m now and I dont know about you guys, but once you've really got out there.. I just can't stay in the same place for too long now. If I stay in one place for too long my mental health starts going down the drain, I start abusing drugs and alcohol, and eventually I get myself in legal trouble. And.. thats exactly what's happening. I need to go, as soon as possible so that my brain can just reset its timer and then maybe come back. Here's my only problem though - I dont know where, and im scared.
I have real genuine anxiety, traveling on foot which is how id need to do it is awesome - until night falls. Then its an every evening ritual of anxiously searching for an out of view place to set up the tent to get some rest, praying that I dont hear an animal or people outside the tent throughout the night. Its because my fear of bears that as much as I want, I can't do Colorado, the PNW, or the Appalachians.
So I want to go west, southwest. Arizona, socal, Utah, or NM. I love deserts, but im from Buffalo im built for cold, weak to heat but its becoming winter time and I dont want to shiver the whole time under an overcast sky. But at the same time I know in the desert resupply towns are few and far between, which is rough.
I dont know, id prefer to HAVE to go out with no choice - thatd make it 10x easier. But between nighttime anxiety and not even knowing where to go, and not even being sure its what I want - but knowing its what I need - im just as stuck as when I planned to leave last year.
Also being solo. I hate being solo, which is why I prefer this to long hiking trips. Hopefully I make some pals along the way, find love, anything can happen in a day.
General advice, motivation, or otherwise is very welcome...

3 weeks in SE Asia under $1800 CAD: is this doable without skipping every meal?
Planning a 3 week trip through Vietnam and maybe Cambodia this fall. I've done budget travel in 30+ countries but never this tight. Target is $1800 CAD total including flights from Toronto. Rough breakdown: $700 flights, $400 lodging, $700 left for food, transport, visas, and whatever goes wrong.
Whether that's realistic depends on who you ask. I work at a coffee shop so I already know how to stretch money. The main question is hostels versus guesthouses. Hostels save cash but I don't sleep well after a week. Guesthouses run $15-25 a night and I actually get rest, which matters more at 44.
Food is where I want to be flexible. Street food instead of tourist restaurants, but I'm wondering if the savings actually work out or if you end up paying for familiar food anyway. Vietnam seems to have a lot of hidden fees. Anyone hit similar numbers recently? Looking for actual expenses, not the usual budget posts that skip visa runs and broken sandals.

Did everyone finish high school and college/university? And what does everyone do for work, if you work at all?
I was wondering if there are people without any kind of degree. I would like to know how hard it is to live a life without it. Or at least hear some experiences.
And do you guys work or anything?
I live in Europe, and I am thinking about getting out of the system…but I struggle with picturing any kind of alternative lifestyle.
I am still quite young, early 20s. Didn’t finish high school and struggling with college, I have no savings or anything.
Does anyone have any advice?

Advice Call of the void
I can feel my current living situation is wearing down on me. There's too many expectations and rules that I feel like i won't be able to fulfill for much longer. I feel guilty being here when i know i don't inherently deserve it and i think I'm running myself into the ground on purpose subconsciously by being stupid with the little money i have. I'm not sure if i was ever meant for a normal life. Something always goes awry and I don't know how people do this shit for decades without going insane. I genuinely think some people are just always meant to be on the run and on the streets instead of a "normal" life
