A recent issue in this sub - please read

3.1k Upvotes

Hey there,

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

There's something I've noticed recently in the sub that I'd like to raise.

I've been moderating on Reddit for about 18 years, and I've been involved with this community for the last seven. Throughout that time, this sub has always been a particularly lovely place to be. The kindness, helpfulness, and good humour of its members have always stood out, and from a moderation perspective, it's been a genuine pleasure to be part of.

Unfortunately, I've noticed a significant increase in unkind and aggressive behaviour here recently. I don't know what's behind the change, or why it's happening here now, but it's something I'd really like us to address before it becomes a bigger problem.

Please:

If you come across a comment that's aggressive, hostile, or unnecessarily unkind — whether it's directed at you or someone else — please resist the temptation to engage. Instead, just hit the Report button and move on.

We'll take care of addressing the behaviour and, where necessary, will remove accounts who seem to need to create unpleasantness for people around them.

r/houseplants has always been a welcoming and supportive community, and I'd very much like to keep it that way. The overwhelming majority of you already contribute to that simply by being thoughtful and decent towards one another.

Thanks for helping us look after this little corner of Reddit. It's appreciated.

PS moderator applications are open, and some additional hands would be helpful rn. We are looking for people with an active history here and significant Reddit-moderation experience.

Brought this Alocasia Jacklyn to my mum two years ago because she almost died at my old flat. Look at her now! 🥹
She is so big she doesn‘t fit on the plant window anymore. Also she just finished flowering and pushed out two huge leaves.
She grows in regular soil and doesn‘t even get fertilizer, I actually have no idea how my mum does it, I could never 😂 I mean look at all the weeds growing in the pot… my mum just doesn‘t care and neither does her alocasia

META I’m begging some of y’all to include more details when asking for advice

Please, no more posts like this:

- “Will my plant get enough light in this spot?” accompanied by a single image of what appears to be bright indirect light. Tell me what direction your window faces, whether it’s partially obstructed by another building, what hemisphere you live in! Modern cameras autocorrect image exposure; your space looking bright on my screen doesn’t necessarily mean your plant will be happy there in real life.

- “What is wrong with my plant?” accompanied by a single image of a plant with nothing obviously wrong with it. I have no way of knowing what your plant looked like two weeks ago and why its change in appearance is concerning you.

- “What am I doing wrong?” accompanied by a single image of a plant that could have any of five different things going wrong. With no additional description of care or conditions. I want to help but I’m not going to spend my time getting details out of you like I’m an investigative journalist.

Discussion I just wanted to share my ~10 year old dracaena

I remember my grandma having this plant growing up. She's given it to me now I've had it for 6. Neither of us are exactly sure how old it is, but over 10 years is possible. She may have topped it at one point. It's never been repotted, somehow it keeps going. When it reaches the ceiling I may cut it and start it over again, any suggestions about when and how to do that is welcome because this plant is dear to me.

Discussion Getting this tineke to look healthy has been a journey

Post image

I've had this plant for quite a while and it's been a nonstop struggle since I bought it. Originally I thought it would be easy to grow because I used to have a giant robusta rubber tree that was super unfussy. This b though with the variegation HATES EVERYTHING. The bottom leaves kept browning and I finally figured out it needed chunkier soil. My previous one wasn't like that at all.

It started growing pretty fast after I fixed that but I hated how the bottom was a bare stick. I decided to chop and prop it to lose the bare part. I propped it in water and it had grown proto roots on the stem quickly so seemed to be going fine. After some months, I noticed the roots were very short still and inspected them closer. Somehow it just decided to grow 1 inch long curly proto roots? They weren't rotten. I just don't think they're supposed to get that long and not have normal roots? They were a very weird texture - like little curly spirals that had the visual texture of a churro. I tried to just say "fuck it, i guess I'll try to prop it the rest of the way in soil" but I soon learned they were also SO FRAGILE. The lightest touch made them just break off and basically disintegrate. It was physically not possible to plant it in soil and retain the curly proto roots.

So I finally decided to try rooting hormone for the first time. I recut the bottom and planted it and watched my plant slowly wilt horribly over a few weeks. Lost 1 leaf and was expecting to end up throwing it out finally thinking my plant was just cursed. Then miraculously it just decided to unwilt! I guess it finally grew real roots.

It's now basically back to the same size as when I bought it but without any brown leaves or a bare stem. This was an awful experience and I wish I could have just thrown it out but I like the variegation on this one.

I am new to keeping plants alive and just added this beautiful Calathea to the family and she has something going on… I’ve spent all evening all over the internet and decided to ask the group. I went ahead and sprayed her down with a distilled water and soap mixture, and wiped her corners with alcohol swabs. Any help would be so appreciated by me and my new girl 😭

In the span of the year the unbranched ficus grew by 11x and the branched ficus grew by 19x in area

Compactness ratio is defined as leaf area / internode
height

Slenderness ratio is defined as the ratio between the length and width of the leaf, a higher number means narrower leaves

Growing conditions: 10-12 hours of full tropical sun all day everyday

Has anyone used this brand to support their plants? I am about to report 3 schmedium sized monsteras into their own individual pots. I was wondering if the size & material of the support matter? My thai con is being supported by one of the green vigoro garden stakes and shes doing pretty well.

Bought my first houseplant a few days ago and I don’t know anything really about keeping them alive 🤣 this rubber tree looks good at the top except for one leaf that’s a bit soft and bending over. Some of the leaves at the bottom feel drier and are curled… is this normal? Any ideas how I can fix? I gave it a good water yesterday…..

I’m so excited and nervous .My first monstera plant ever. Please feel free to share any of your advice. Also, should I go ahead and repot this plant right away or should I wait until it grows more roots and leaves ? It’s currently in a 4inch nursery pot.

I got this little pot at a ceramics sale. It's a bit oddly shaped, but it was so pretty and cheap I couldn't pass it out. It already has a drainage hole.

It's roughly 12cm deep, and 7cm wide at the top. Which is kind of a weird proportion for most plants? I think most prefer a wider and shallower one.

Obviously it's tiny, so I'm assuming that most plants will also outgrow it eventually. But I do also prefer things that can be kept small.

I got her as a 4 inch baby and wanted to proactively treat for pests. I had no idea neem and peppermint oil needed to be cleaned off 100% before putting back into light and sizzled almost every leaf. Then she got a fungus so I had to chop her back to almost nothing. Now she’s putting out several leaves at a time🥳
