Advice Curious about picking your first or new handgun? Curious about a model or caliber? Stop here first! Resources etc.

Multiple posts concerning selecting a new (first) handgun, or first defensive guns have popped up.

I dig activity on our page, I'm all for thoughtful discussion, I'm all for us exercising our rights.

However, this subreddit has been around long enough now we have a good collection of folks asking mostly the same question and I think we can streamline this process for our existing members, newcomers, and curious browsers alike.

So! That being said, there are some links to outside websites at the bottom of this text that have decent advice on choosing the purpose of use, caliber, size, model you may be looking for when selecting a new or first handgun.

The articles are typically focused on new shooters or at least folks new to handguns. Many will recommend training, hands on time, etc., before your first purchase and if you have the time and funds I definitely agree, but research your trainer/facility thoroughly.

Eventually I will try to curate a well rounded list of the most popular makes and models in various categories. I also intend to make a few polls for the active community to vote on a few things as well.

Sales I built a site to compare listings from multiple retailers

Hey everyone, I’ve been working on BareArms, a site that brings together listings for firearms and related gear from several retailers. You can search by model or specs, compare buying options, and bookmark listings to come back to later.

I’d appreciate feedback on the search and listing experience: https://barearms.us/

Discussion question about ported handgun barrels

can the gas jet from the ported barrel injure you somehow, like how a revolver cylinder can, or is there not enough pressure at that point for that to happen? like for example if you shoot it from a closer in position in a defensive scenario or training?

Derya 9 mm island
600 or so rounds so far. It wasn’t even supposed to be this many but what do you do when you pick up something at half the price of similar options and it just feels good to shoot?
You can see the front sight screw missing, it backed out and flew off and i didn’t notice. If i could go back I’d loc tite it. Not a big deal to me.
No failures other than one hard mag tech primer that my Glock 45 didn’t shoot so then i threw the round in the derya. Dimple was there no bang. Ammo related
It groups just as good as any other pistol this size. Glock 19 size with a Magwell
Trigger breaks in great and a little lighter as you go but out of the box the trigger is way less gritty than a normal Glock trigger and it has a definitive wall. Consistent 4 lb pulls. Audible and positive reset. Nothing that’ll help you go fast or shoot at longer distances but also nothing hindering you trigger wise. It’s a good trigger. Just good.
Direct rmr cut is a plus.
I’m a huge fan of handle it grips, talon grips etc since i absolutely need traction around the mag release area not just palm area. LGS had some hogue cutouts. That’s how i prefer this piece right now. I’ll probably get the texturized rubber or hex from handle it grips soon. Something more aggressive.
That would be where my only gripe is: the traction. It’s great on the backstrap and front. Not really there on the side panels. But i mean, just about everyone stipples their frames. I just prefer the convenience of stick on grip texture. Magwell and grip fits my hand GREAT. Presentation for me is easy on the derya especially when switching between say a pdp, Canik, or 2011.
Consistent .4 from low ready is a good sign for me
Usually when i switch back to my Glock 45 it takes some small adjustment.
Recoil impulse is incredibly soft and muzzle rise is barely there. The gas pedals with the stippling are a great touch for me.
This shoots as good as or better than my gen 6 Glock 45 radian. No, i don’t want to make anyone mad if they own the Reddit build or anything similar because i myself have it. I’m just saying derya is certainly killing it.
Edges out my Canik radian. Less snap, softer impulse, less muzzle rise. These are small small margins. The Canik radian is insanely good these are just different grips/frames not to mention the lighter Canik trigger. The derya 9 is the perfect amount of blockiness if that makes sense.
No, it doesn’t edge out a 2011, but i find myself picking up the derya 9 more than say my Kimber pro comp the past two range days. Most likely because it’s new and really blew me away. Some Glock mags seem to catch a little. I’m sure an extended mag release would help since it’s hard to really push in on the mag release without breaking your grip. However, the included mags work great.

Glock mags and an island barrel. Highly highly recommend.

EDC pdp compact

So I’ve been AIWB carrying this everyday for over a year and while I love the gun sometimes I am annoyed of the width of it for edc. I have a p365x and of course it’s easier to conceal but I prefer carrying something I can easier control and shoot. Would a MP2.0 compact 4” be an upgrade? I know this is beating a dead horse but all the other similar posts are from like over a year ago. Thanks for your time.

pistol that you’d never give up?

what’s that one handgun that feels very personal to you and you wouldn’t give them up even for some way better model? for me it’s stainless PPK, the size is perfect so it can be hidden well, i like the weight and for someone who uses it just for last resort protection since guns are not common here at all im comfy with 5 bullets of 7,65. Tried glock 17,1911 and beretta 21 a bobcat, still this is my gun of choosing

I am missing one hole on the paper. Are those 3 or 4 hits with the 45ACP?

The rest is spread on the paper, wish I would be more consistent

Feed ramp chipping

Hi all. I have a Rival S Darkside about a year old. Recently started having double feeds, failure to fires. I’m new to shooting and finally one of my instructors discovered chips in the feed ramp. He said it’s a known problem with Caniks due to the way the metal is hardened. He was able to use a dremmel and smoothed the area. I’m concerned this will be an ongoing problem; what can you tell me?

Advice Needed First firearm

I’m looking to purchase my first ever firearm soon I have no experience I want my first to be a handgun learn with it and grow from there. I was looking into the Glock 43x but some people said they wouldn’t recommend for first a gun I heard the m&p sheild plus could be a good contender or the Glock 19. I would eventually like to carry after I learn it and get comfortable enough with it but I guess I could buy a compact ccw gun after I learn from whatever I do buy. So as someone starting out with no experience what would you recommend to learn on that is beginner friendly and not over $500 if possible any feedback is appreciated thank you.
