I/O 2026 keynotes (megathread)
Google’s AI Overviews made ads harder to ignore, study finds
In a Forbes Advisor study of 796 US adults, 83% of people shown an AI Overview noticed advertising, compared with 59% without one. But fewer could remember at least one website they’d seen: 56% versus 76%.
Gen Z participants trusted the results more when an AI Overview appeared: 67% versus 49%. They were still less likely to remember where the information came from.

Google books needs to filter out or ban books that are clearly designed to fool people to buy the wrong books
They're all published in 2026, so I'm guessing they're AI written. The Klara and the Sun Summary & Analysis is only 7-page long and priced $10!
I looked up the same titles on Amazon and other book stores, and they don't have the same problem as Google Play store.

Google home speakers downloading ~350gb in a week, when they aren't being used
A few days ago I got an alert from my ISP provider that I was at 75% of my data usage. Typically I can ignore them, for the past 5 years I think I've gone over once, and when I get those alerts I'm a day or two away from the billing cycle ending.
A day or two later, another alert that I'm at 90% of my data usage. Today I got an alert that I exceeded my limit and they've charged me for extra data and noticed I still have 10 days left on my cycle.
I looked at my usage, and started Oct 7th, my daily usage almost tripped so I started digging into what was pulling so much data, and I came across 2 of my 4 Google home speakers that really haven't been used, typically we only actually use the kitchen speaker for timers and some random questions, and the bedroom speaker for ambient background noise.
Surprisingly, a Roku player in the garage also shows 50gb of usage for the month, and that TV hasn't been turned on in a few months.
Any idea what could be causing this? For the time being I've blocked Internet access to them to see if my daily usage drops back to normal.

Google Search AI Mode is very bad and gives wrong answers that I think some school kid like middle school can understand. It is cooked.

Apparently, this is Ringo Starr now
Spotted this in my Google news feed. The AI-generated summary is about Ringo Starr returning to Forest Hills Stadium, but the accompanying photo is of Woody Allen.
being an 80-something celebrity with glasses is close enough

Google Android's UI/UX Changes
Is it just me or is the Android UI becoming increasingly difficult to navigate and in that same vein, becoming more like iOS? In the first example screenshot, there is no longer a "Contacts button" at the bottom. Instead the Contacts button is now "View Contacts" not aligned with anything else in the UI, it's just floating in the middle right of the screen like an afterthought. This is objectively bad UI design.
When I open my (tbc. this is the Google Calendar App) calendar to view a specific day, EVENTS are HIDDEN behind a "+3" drop down. Who is this for!? Who taps on a specific day and says, "I don't want to see everything going on today."??? Admittedly calendars can get cluttered but the majority of events on anyone's calendar are important. I want to be the one to minimize something important to get it out of the way. I don't want something IMPORTNAT HIDDEN BY DEFAULT.
Google Sorry Page - ipv6 ≠ ipv4
Using Brave on Android 12, type scholar.google.com into Brave.
Get redirected to a google.com sorry page.
"Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network. Please try your request again later. "
Immediately underneath it says:
IP address: {my ipv6 address} ≠ {my ipv4 address}
Followed by "Time:" which has a date/time
URL: https://scholar.google.com/
Eventually it just starts working again.
Am I assuming too much that Google is trying to spot me hopping IP addresses too fast rather than detecting anything especially unusual.
Only started recently, earlier this week, will probably try shredding google.com and related data in Brave if it recurs.
But if anyone knows exactly why.....

Google Destroyed the Internet
Back in the AltaVista days, you could browse hundreds of search results and discover personal websites, original creations, independent projects, and web pages about pretty much any subject imaginable. The internet was a vast space for discovery, where anyone could build their own website and share their passions, knowledge, or ideas.
When Google came along, it made searching faster. But over the years, search results deteriorated into what we have today: the same websites, the same commercial platforms, and the same SEO-optimized content over and over again.
For about fifteen years now, I've found it almost impossible to discover the kind of personal websites I used to come across. They probably still exist, but they've become virtually invisible in Google's search results. It's as if they no longer exist.
That's precisely what bothers me. The internet hasn't stopped producing interesting things. What's deteriorated is our ability to discover them. The web is still vast, but a huge part of its diversity has become inaccessible through the tools we use every day.
We've gone from an internet where you could explore, get lost, and stumble upon unexpected discoveries to one where the same major players constantly dominate the scene.
Over the past twenty years, Google has helped turn a space for discovery into a system where much of the web has become invisible. I think that's one of the greatest setbacks in the history of the internet.
8 years of daily usage, still feels like the day I bought him. Google Pixel 2 XL. Nothing replaced. (Photos took on my previous phone Nexus 4, expect the last one lol)
Such a banger phone. Slightly fried icons in certain angle on screen. Other than that just flawless in every aspect especially the battery.
Just taking pictures with Nexus reminded my what kind of hell I had while using him before I bought Pixel.

Another Blatant Form of Privacy Violation by Google Through Automatic Phone Number Verification
Okay Google, you want me to use a GrapheneOS supported phone, I get it. You don't have to beg me.
TL;DR
If you've logged into multiple Google accounts on your Android phone at the same time, Google will quietly take this phone's number, automatically verify and bind it to all those accounts, whether you agree or not.
The result is that you think your secondary accounts aren't bound to a phone number, but they've actually been bound, making it easier for Google to link all these accounts together.
And this is legit. I literally just disabled this auto-number verification.

Gemini suggestion
For customers with Plus or Free plans, how about giving us a decent model since you bundle it with Drive storage. I understand taking away Pro Models, but the fact is that as paying customers, we should merit a little better than free tier.
