Discussion Reputation Lock-In: How Google Profits When Small Businesses Are Forced to Feed the Review Machine

Google’s review system is kind of a joke if you look at it from the business owner’s side. Pretty much anyone can leave a damaging review, whether they are an actual customer, a competitor, a disgruntled former employee, an ex-girlfriend, or even somebody who has never even done business with your company at all. But if that review is fake or fraudulent, good luck getting it removed. Google controls the whole process, decides whether it stays up, and gives the business very little real recourse if removal efforts fail.

So what is the business supposed to do? The only answer is typically to go begging the majority of your happy customers to leave Google reviews so the fake one gets pushed down and diluted. Think about how convenient that is for Google for a moment. The business takes the reputational hit, the business does all the work to fix it, and Google ends up with more reviews, more traffic, more engagement, and even more businesses pushing their customers onto Google’s platform.

It's hard to ignore the fact that Google greatly benefits from the fraudulent review problem. The GBP platform gives people a very easy way to attack a business’s reputation, gives the business very limited tools to fight back, and then rewards Google when the business has to generate even more reviews just to recover.

I've worked with roughly a hundred small businesses dealing with fraudulent reviews and this is the way I see it. Does anyone else feel this way?

Discussion Can I use the one number for all my branch profiles?

I currently have unique branch number on each Google profile. Recently my company wanted to use one number for all 10 branches. Practically it doesn’t make sense. People who are near to the branch if they want to ask for directions or information about the branch need branch number. But I want to know technically is there any way to keep general number for all the profiles?

Question How to set up a Google Business Profile in Saudi Arabia for an online Service-Area Business (SAB)?

• Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I am trying to register a Google Business Profile for my business based here in Saudi Arabia. My business operates completely online—I handle online sales and provide digital services, meaning I do not have a physical storefront or commercial office for customers to visit.

Every time I attempt to set up the profile, Google heavily prompts for a physical address and video verification of a physical commercial location, which I do not have.

I needed small help and guidance from you all. What google does is, makes my number live for 15 days, then remove it for some days and then reinstate it. What can be the reason. Why it is doing so?

Support Successful Live Agent Video and BOOM suspended…

I need help on what to do next. This is my situation.

I did a live agent video. We went over the shop. I showed everything, the truck the office the signage at the front.

Then after a couple of minutes the agent says “congratulations I am happy to announce that your business is verified”. I was happy and we closed the call. I see the profile now as processing.

3 minutes later I get a suspension. What’s up with that? What can I do? Send an appeal and ignore the fact that I went through all of that trouble? What’s the point of verifying me if I will get suspended during the processing period?

I run a local service shop business in the US.

Question Social media links feature is still completely missing from my GBP after 2 years. Is it a category or regional rollout issue?

Hi everyone,

I manage a local B2B supply business, and I'm practically the only business in my city actively running multiple channels: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and YouTube.

However, the manual "Social Profiles" section under Edit Profile > Contact is completely missing from my dashboard. It's been well over two years since this feature was introduced, but I still cannot manually add my links.

I have a few questions for the local SEO experts here:

  1. Is the Social Profiles feature still broadly restricted or glitchy depending on your region?
  2. Could this be restricted based on my specific business category?
  3. Does Google less prioritize organic profile feature rollouts if you've never spent money on Google Ads? I haven't run any paid marketing, and part of me wonders if that's the reason.

Any insights or workarounds (like using Schema markup to force it) would be greatly appreciated!

Question What’s best failure prevention?

Edited: I have been in a few businesses in different industries over many years. I opened a new GBP, about 4 months old. It has seven 5 star reviews from helping past clients. This is a new consulting business with 1 year old website in this different, purely “general” consulting industry. My experience in previous industries and life support this consulting. But I wasn’t known as a “general” consultant. I’m still working on this title to be realistic and known.

Especially to be crawl-able by Google.

I began displaying links to my website’s articles, videos, and posting articles on this GBP relative to myself as a general business person with with a vivid personal background. As for images or videos regarding this consulting, while they can be created, they are not as realistic as my actual experience for this consulting role. How would I post “consulting “?… here I am consulting with this person or people, blah blah blah. Or here is this video of someone interviewing me like a lot of those blah blah BS interviews that you see, and this would just be one of them. The theme would be truthful, but the actual display would not reveal specifically what I am doing as this kind of consultant. I would much rather post actual videos / images I’ve had for years on jobs I’ve done at real locations with crews, etc. Such as slideshows with accompanying text. Also, within my personal life, I’ve had enough activities, not just business, but personal activities or social events that are in pictures that can be slideshows to display personal credibility. Some of my consulting won’t be
business per se.

A business location is unnecessary so it’s my house address. It’s listed honestly on my GBP and on my website. Both are actually my name. Just like certain doctors, artists, other people where in fact their own business is their name. I don’t wish to disregard specific google or other protocol but interpret the intention. It’s just truth and fact. My point here is I’ve never had a problem with this in business or residential locations. That includes a couple of residential locations that should have in fact been commercial. It was just truthful. But that’s not my question or the point of this post; it’s worth mentioning. The emphasis of my question is here:

I wanna be cautious so nothing as videos misinterpreted as irrelevant backfire or I don’t miss anything. The GBP building up with, “general legitimacy” as general consultant matters. My question is in general, about the risks in posting videos that are not specific to forms consulting. After reading, commenting, posting, and for the most part, understanding the sensitivity of the GBP, certain people definitely have more experience than I do so your opinions are valuable and quite appreciated. Thanking you, entirely!

Support Google confirmed a policy-violating review was removed—but it remains publicly visible

Google Business Profile Support confirmed in writing that a review on my Business Profile violated Google’s policies and had been removed.

That confirmation Case ID 9-0869000041953.

This morning Oct 16 2026 they emailed me saying it was deleted, the review remains publicly visible.

This is unacceptable. I have repeatedly reported it, contacted Support through numerous cases, and received the same generic reporting instructions even though I already completed those steps.

The review contains personal attacks and false statements. The same content was previously posted on another Business Profile and removed by Google for violating policy before being reposted on my profile.

Also I reported it and it never went into the escalation box for me to add in my evidence.

Yash reply I got this morning was addressed to someone else they didn't even use my name which is really weird. They quoted the reviewer by name so I know it was the right review. This was done by a Yash at GOOGLE.....

Can a Product Expert please escalate this technical failure to the appropriate Google team?

Question Reporting systemic fake review rings (coercive student reviews + keyword stuffing) on Google Maps—Google only deletes duplicates instead of suspending?

I'm dealing with a local educational institute that is abusing Google Business Profiles to unfairly dominate local search rankings.

Here is what they are doing:

Forced / Coercive Reviews: They force their student batches to drop bulk 5-star reviews all at once whenever a new batch finishes.

Keyword Stuffing & Off-Topic Reviews: They teach software/coding, but force students to stuff unrelated keywords like "printer repair", "laptop service", and "computer repair" into reviews to steal traffic from local hardware businesses.

Conflict of Interest: None of these reviews represent actual paid customers of those services.

I have submitted redressal forms with proof of hundreds of fake reviews. However, Google support only removes the exact duplicate reviews while leaving the rest of the profile and fraudulent rating intact.

Has anyone successfully escalated a case like this to get a profile restricted or suspended for systemic review fraud and unfair trade practices? Any advice on how to get Google Support to take stronger action?

Question Posting is currently turned off. Our policies do not permit contributions to this type of place

Several of our businesses are being marked as "Closed Permanently", well, we then marked them as re-opened. After how long can we be able to get a review posted? The 'review' feature is missing for 2 days now and we only see "Posting is currently turned off. Our policies do not permit contributions to this type of place"

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding my Google Business Profile. After several unsuccessful verification attempts, my profile has been disabled because Google says the business is marked as a residence and doesn’t meet the eligibility guidelines.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue and successfully appealed? I’d really appreciate any advice on how to resolve this and get the profile verified.

I’ve attached screenshots for reference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! 🙏

Discussion Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode don't need special optimization. So what should a local business actually do?

Every few days I see someone saying SEO is dead and now you need AEO or GEO on top of it. I got curious and read what Google itself says, because it's easy to sell a course around a new acronym.

Google's docs on AI Overviews and AI Mode say the usual SEO best practices still apply, there are no additional technical requirements, and no special optimization is required to appear in them. Separately, Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity.

So for a local service business like a plumber, roofer or cleaner, my read is that most of the work is still pretty boring:

- Keep your Google Business Profile accurate: category, hours, service areas, phone number.

- Make sure your site and profile agree on the basics: business name, services and areas you serve.

- Answer the questions customers actually ask, in plain language and near the top of the page.

- Reply to your reviews.

None of that is a trick, and I don't think anyone can honestly promise you'll show up in an AI answer.

For context, I co-run a small local SEO business, so I'm not neutral on this. Has anyone here actually seen their business show up in an AI Overview or AI Mode? If so, what changed before it started happening?

Support Business email locked out, states admin can give access, but I'm the admin

I run a very small business so I'm the IT, HR, Sales and Marketing department all in one. Today while using our info@domain email via Google I got locked out. I received a message on the screen that says "Administrator has cancelled your subscription to Google Workspace.". So I went to our original email of [businessname@gmail.com](mailto:businessname@gmail.com) and that is working but doesn't seem to be the admin account. I was almost positive the account that is locked out was the admin account.

How do I find out which email I used as the admin? This was done years ago and we haven't had to do anything like this before. We were working on a really important project in our Drive and now we can't access it at all.

Question Do detailed Google reviews tell you more than a pile of five-star ratings?

I've been comparing review profiles for a few local businesses and started noticing how different the reviews themselves can be even when the ratings look almost identical.

One business has loads of five-star reviews that are basically great service or highly recommended. Another has customers writing a paragraph about what they bought, who helped them and why they came back. I'm not saying a customer should have to write an essay for their review to count, but from a reputation analysis standpoint I'd probably learn more from the second group.

When you're evaluating a local business rather than just looking at the stars, do you pay attention to how thorough the reviews are?

Question Google Business Profile Fake 1-Star Review Still Live After Escalation

I’m looking for advice from Local SEO professionals who have dealt with suspected fake reviews on Google Business Profiles.
I manage Local SEO for a client whose business profile was targeted with multiple suspected spam 1-star reviews a few months ago. I reported them, and Google removed them.
A few days ago, another 1-star review appeared. The reviewer claims that the business owner visited to assess a roofing job and provide a quote but was not interested in doing the work. I confirmed with my client and they haven't served any client with that name.
Based on the circumstances, I suspect the review may be intended to damage the business’s reputation. However, I want to understand the correct process rather than make assumptions.
Here are the details:
Review rating: 1 star
Reported on: 17 August 2026
Current status: Escalated – Check email for updates
Current situation: Several weeks have passed, but the review is still live.
I reported the review through Google’s review reporting process, but it hasn’t been removed.
My questions:
What is the best next step when a reported review remains live for several weeks?
Is there an effective way to escalate the case further through Google Business Profile support?
What kind of evidence is useful when appealing a suspected fake or malicious review?
Has anyone successfully had a review removed after receiving the “Escalated” status?
I’d appreciate advice from anyone who has handled similar cases, particularly those working in Local SEO.
Thanks in advance.
