My biggest fish and 5th ever catch

Post image

I didn’t measure but think it was about 15 inch brown. Was exciting to bring it in. Caught it on a river with a streamer (first time using a streamer too)

Was patient reeling it in and let it go as soon as I got the hook out and snapped a pic.

Catching something this big made me feel sad for the fish, I just don’t want to hurt them. But I’ve tried to educate myself on good handling and release. Maybe feeling sad for the fish is part of it.

If you had leeches, the lake will pay you out.

Favorite hatch?

Got into a pretty awesome October caddis hatch that brought out some pretty decent cutthroat. I just love the combination of fall colors and big dry flies. But what other hatches do you all enjoy the most?

Skunked tonight, but still got to enjoy a beautiful sunset and an area to myself

A swing fly tied on a size 2 streamer hook, inspired by a post I came across on Instagram.
Since I have used neither fur nor dubbing materials, the fly is relatively lightweight. To compensate, I have incorporated a generous blend of marabou in several colours to create a fuller profile.
I take particular care in shaping the head. After applying a base colour, I add several coats of clear head cement. This significantly enhances the lustre of the head, giving the fly a more refined and premium appearance.
The extra time and effort involved also make each fly feel more personal and valuable to me.
Rather than tying flies for mass production, my aim is to create something that can be appreciated as a work of craftsmanship in its own right.
Well, that is the idea, anyway!

First bass on topwater fly

Joe Cermele’s Master Splinter got smoked this morning going for bass before work. I live in BC, and the lake I fish has proven consistently that bass here can be really picky about topwater.

Decided to tie on a Master Splinter I tied the other day just for fun and figure out how it moves. Got absolutely inhaled on the second cast.

Bass is small by most standards, but not bad by BC standards where summers are shorter and temps colder than where these fish are actually from. He and his brothers will be turned into tacos.

I’ve only been really fishing for about a year and a half, and I’ve been trying really hard over the last few months to build out my boxes, but I still feel like I don’t have what I need. I obviously fish dries more than anything, but I’m getting a little more into nymphing.

I’m mostly fishing the tailwater of the south fork of the Boise (in town), but have ventured up to the salmon here and there, and am headed over to the big wood and the snake (Henry’s fork) late spring/early summer next year.

Regional sea run cutthroat fishing question.

For those of you who fish the Puget sound in Washington you know it’s 1 of 1 in terms of fly fishing for sea run cutthroat in the salt with the exception of some inlets up in BC which in my experience fish similar.

My question for anyone who has targeted sea run cutthroat in this area is: have you ever used a trout Spey setup or maybe a one handed rod setup with a sink tip and a skagit leader on the end?

I know this setup is usually used in rivers for targeting salmon or steelhead but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be effective against aggressive SRC who are looking for dumb protein this time of year and are not leader shy. Please let me know if you’ve tried this, thanks.

First Fly Fishing Trip

I am planning to go out for a short day hike along Laurel Fork in WV, see the sights and do some fishing for my first trip. I have a decent amount of experience backpacking and spin fishing in Northern MN, but if anybody has any advice about little things that will make this short fishing trip more enjoyable I would be very appreciative.

Fly fishing in the rain?

Hey all, any advice for fly fishing in the rain? I know the pressure can really turn off the bite both before and after rain, but even during I can't really seem to catch anything. Any advice?

Thanks!

Discussion Going to Concord, NH for the first time this week and looking to fly fish in the area and elsewhere. For those familiar with the area, what are your recs and what do I need to know

Never been to the state before and will be based on the Concord area with the ability to go out further on the weekend. It looks like there are plenty of streams all over the state, but I'm not sure what to expect this time of the year - I don't know which are likely to have trout or which have been too low/warm all season, etc.

It looks like near me I have the Contoocook, Soucook, Suncook, and Merrimack. I checked trout stocking info and it looks like they load up the Soucook with brookies/browns/rainbows, so I am inclined to start there, but no clue what the conditions are. It doesn't look like the Merrimack is stocked at all so would appreciate any insight on what it's like.

I assume the streams in the mountains will be much better so I'm not too worried about finding something in the North, but woudl appreciate any recs if you have them.

Thanks!
