Discussion [MOD POST - PSA] We yell. We drink whisky. Sometimes we fish. WELCOME. Newcomers, start here.

You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.

But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species. You might be amazed at how much useful content you'll find.

Every year or so we attempt again to create a starter guide, or to refresh the one from last year. Start here, and feel free to post if you don't find what you need....

Sometimes we run contests - watch the stickied threads for those. Again, welcome...and tight lines!

I've made the final version of the OG golden stone that started my fixation on the nymph. I've attached a photo of a fish it has caught (I got a bigger net the next day)

5 Days to Go Anywhere

Post image
55 Upvotes

I’ve got Oct 26-30 off and would like to spent all of it fly fishing in relative isolation. I’m willing to hike some decent miles and can fly into any airport with commercial flights. I live in Texas, and I’m happy to fly anywhere in the continental US. I’m not asking anyone to spot burn but some general guidance for this time of year could really make my week. I plan to visit local shops for more detailed info. Blue lining with a 3 wt is my preference, and I’d prefer to target trout this time.

Please ignore the post if the premise offends you. I’m not trying to ruffle feathers. I just really need a break from my life and I’m having a hard time convincing myself to go do something that I know brings me peace. Any help is deeply appreciated.

Plus a few summer steelhead. The bull seemed like a sea run fish, what do we think?

A most beaky lower deschutes redband that ate a (fake) crawdad. The variation in appearance in a native trout population is so cool

Stocked pond question!!

Post image
11 Upvotes

I recently found a small stocked pond near me and being that I dont have much time to travel and I saw a ton of fish in it, id like to learn a bit more about targeting stocked fish, specifically holdovers and very pressured fish. I was fishing a double nymph rig and lucked into this brown on my 1st or 2nd cast and then caught nothing for 2 hours. Saw plenty of brookies and some browns but no dice. Im not particularly equipped for Stillwater and im not sure how fishing it works, any tips on stillwater/and/or tricky (but stocked) fish would be appreciated.

Autumn in northern Japan (Hokkaido) is reaching its peak, and in just a few short weeks, the first snowflakes will begin to fall in the mountains. I've got a friend visiting, and at the top of his list was aiming for native species which we got, but the colors and views on the river made each outing even more magical. The fish, in order, are iwana (spotted char), oshorokoma (dolly varden), and yamame (cherry trout).

Discussion Fly fishing with your dog

Does anyone have any recommendations for gear for your dog ,I guess like protective gear.

I just came back from a trip and I think my fly line got my dogs eye ,after we finished fishing got him in the car and noticed his eye had discharge and he was squinting, flushed his eye .later that day he was still squinting and while fly fishing,he was even that close to,my fly got caught in his ear .I use barbless flies so it was easy to remove. I don’t know if I should buy him something or if y’all have any recommendations. Took him to the vet and he has an ulcer in his eye . Thanks you guys !

Discussion Anybody fly fishing in the surf?

I was visiting family in SoCal and saw a fly fisher casting into the surf while we were at the beach. There were a lot of surfers taking advantage of large waves cresting about 100 yards out and boogie boarders riding the smaller, but still decent, waves closer in. It was probably the last place I expected to see a fly fisher.

Do any of you like to fish in rough surf like that? What are you targeting? What’s your setup?

Discussion Finally made it out to my favorite fly fishing spot here in Southern Oregon… what’s your fishing destination you miss most of all?

The Klamath River never disappoints and if you get bored of wild fish and gorgeous scenery there are a half dozen other great high desert trout streams

RIP ESN rod. The rod and net broke my fall. It's cheaper that my co-pay at an ER...

The fishing was really good up to this point.

Moving in present

Hello everyone! I’m currently making the long move up to Redding ca from SoCal! I purchased a 9 ft 5wt last spring and have done almost all of my fly fishing at urban ponds for bass and panfish! My only real trout trip was up to the kern river this last summer and it didn’t go very well( backpacked into the Johnsondale bridge and skunked for 3 days straight 😅) since it seems like I will have a lot more opportunities to fish for trout in rivers and lakes, I was wondering what everyone’s favorite set up for most of the rivers/creeks and alpine lakes/ still waters would be? I’m looking to get a new set up to pair with my 5wt or to bring along backpacking with me instead of my 5wt! If anyone has any other book or video recommendations to learn how to read rivers and creeks I’d really appreciate it! Photos for eye candy!

Anybody been up to the Green below Flaming Gorge in the last week or two and have an update on how it’s fishing with the fluctuations in flows? Thinking of heading up there this weekend and was curious

Discussion Glove recommendation

Hey all,

I fish and guide in southeast Alaska year around. We’re pretty lucky to get a late run of coho and chum at the bald eagle preserve outside my village.

So I fish late into January for salmon and the trout and dolly that follow them.

I recently had an accident were I lost part of my finger. The surgeon said it’s always worse the first winter after losing one.

Would love to get reviews/recommendations for any insulated water proof gloves, some say they can fast and retrieve but that’s not to high on my priority list but the first two are. Thanks all.
