Hi, folks! I've made this design inspired by mixed media and Dragon Quest V as homage for my favorite game in the series and I hope you enjoy it! Made with Procreate and Photoshop (no AI was used in the process). If you would like to know more of my work, you can follow me on my socials (links in my bio). Cheers! ✌️🧙
*The japanese text means Wild Companion*

Dragon Quest II Finished Dragon Quest II

Post image
718 Upvotes

I've finished playing the Dragon Quest II HD Remake (True Ending). It really was a wonderful experience! The English voice acting is fantastic, and I love the dialogue between the characters, which wasn't really a thing in DQ I & III.

I highly recommend the game to anyone who is a fan of the series—and generally the remakes of the Erdrick Trilogy. For the best experience, the games should also be played in this order:

III -> I -> II

Additionally, I recommend that anyone playing Dragon Quest II goes for the True Ending. It offers a few extra tough boss fights and a very extensive credits sequence.

Last but not least, I love how the inscription on Ortega's helmet (the protagonist's father from DQ III) plays a certain role across all three games ❤️

Dragon Quest VIII You've been given the task of choosing 2 new characters to add to a hypothetical Dragon Quest VIII Remake (yes, another one). Who are you adding, and why? What do they bring to the party? (End of game spoilers!) Spoiler

• Upvotes

Just a fun thought experiment I had the other day, brought on by one of my very few gripes with the otherwise fantastic Dragon Quest VII 3DS version. During the battle with the newly-added Juggerwroth, the party gets paralyzed by some nondescript EVIL that even our Hero can't shake off! And who comes to the rescue but Marcello himself? Marcello would have been a fantastic addition if added to the party, if his contributions to the battle itself are any indication. A late addition, sure... but so is Psaro in Dragon Quest IV DS. The postgame in VIII is expansive enough that he would still get plenty of the toughest challenges to tackle, and some of his acerbic, derisive wit would be pretty funny to play out as well. Always thought his sudden departures and disappearance from the world left a bit to be desired... so what does he bring to the party?

~ ~ ~

Skill Trees:

Swords - Like Angelo, Marcello's Templar training gives him a rather robust set of sword skills. He's able to equip rapiers as well, and has a lot of the same skills Angelo does, like Falcon Slash and Miracle Slash. But he also has exclusive access to Dark Slash, which is an attack that does slightly more than normal damage... but if Marcello is wielding a Cursed Weapon, it instead does MUCH more.

Staves - Another one out of the Templar Playbook. Where Angelo tempered his healing set out with Kathwhack (which Marcello learns by default) and Oomph, Marcello opts to debuff enemies with moves only he can learn, such as Sapple, as well as certain spells to cause ailments, and a passive to make them stick more easily, and for longer. Also gives him Kazammle!

Shields - A bit of a departure from DQ VIII's convention of just letting shields be a small defense boost. Marcello HATES owing people favors, so why not pay it forward and put them in his debt instead? It shows Marcello's more magnanimous side, stepping in to defend low health party members and pick up very strong defensive moves like Defending Champion and Forbearance.

Fisticuffs - Marcello was never one to really scrap, but he can in a pinch... and he fights dirty when he does. Generally, this gives large Agility and Critical Boosts to Marcello, as well as a fisticuffs version of Executioner/Lightning Thrust, giving Fisticuffs a very solid use case for postgame Metal Hunting.

Discipline - This is his Marcello's personal tree. At the highest levels, Marcello can equip cursed equipment with no ill effects - including being able to switch it at will, without it being stuck on him. It also affords him a much higher resistance to ailments - including curses. Still, he isn't fully immune to them, but every bit helps. Also grants abilities like Meditation, allowing him to recover enormous amount of health to himself. Helpful when paired with shields, or if Marcello is your last man standing.

~ ~ ~

There are other characters I can see joining the party on a more permanent basis without swinging the story too far, such as Bangerz (I mean we bring the Hero's kid along in DQ5, it's not THAT different), Trode, Charmles (as a joke), Raya, Chen Mui, or perhaps an entirely new character from Empychu. But what does everyone else think? New character, or retrofitting an existing one into the greater narrative?

Dragon Quest III [DQ3 HD2D] How Important Is Class Changing? Spoiler

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey, all. I just finished platinum-ing my first dq game (11) and I've moved onto 3 since that seemed like the next best game to jump to, especially with the hd2d remaster.

However, I'm finding my enjoyment slightly hindered due to how the party system is handled (my first game had party members who were heavily intertwined with the story, so it was a little jarring, but overall nbd) and I've read stuff about how eventually you'll gain the ability to change their class and there's ways to change their personality?

My issue is, I'm not that smart a guy so all of that was going way over my head.

Ideally I'd like to just stick with the party I've got, flaws and all.

So: 'How Important Is Class Changing?' Is it a necessity if I want to platinum this game as well?
How much can I expect to struggle by endgame if I choose to forgo that mechanic?

It's not a deal-breaker if so; I just want to know if I'll need to really grasp that mechanic at some point.

General Finally beat all the mainline games! Now waiting for 12!

Post image
189 Upvotes

After seeing Hero debut in Smash (as well as dealing with some long-term personal struggles), I decided to invest myself into the world of Dragon Quest by beating every mainline game for the first time. Seven years later, I have done it! Now it's one of my very favorite series ever!

If anyone's interest, my top favorites were:

- Dragon Quest VII (PSX): I was dreading starting this because of it's bad rep of being "too long", but the premise & writing were excellent the whole way through! It's probably my favorite one of them all! I tried the 3DS & Switch remakes, but was really disengaged by their art directions & abridged stories. I sobbed like a kid when those credits scrolled by... an absolute gem of a game.

- Dragon Quest IV (NDS): My favorite thing about this one is the story focus on each of your party members. Playing a "chapter" as each of them before they finally meet really fleshed out their back stories, motivations, personalities, and, in turn, the world they all share. Out of all of them, I hope IV gets the HD-2D treatment next. Also, Alena is bae ❤️

- Dragon Quest XI (Switch): I can't say much more than what others have said about XI, but it is a genuine MASTERPIECE of a game. I used to think only Chrono Trigger could reach that level of perfection until I finished XI. The story is broken up into three acts & the latter two will utterly surprise you, so please go in blind if you don't already know! Also, Sylvando is in it, so it's a must-play.

Now to dabble around in Monsters, Builders, & other spin-offs while I wait for XII! Thank you all for being such a warm & loving community for me over the years (I'm convinced DQ fans are the best fandom). Please share with me your experiences, too! 💖

Dragon Quest XI Title: Dragon Quest XI (3DS) English patch: how far we've come, and an open invitation to join in

A few weeks ago this was a rough machine translation of a game that never left Japan. This week we shipped v0.1.18, and I wanted to stop and say thank you, because the project has changed a lot, and most of that change came from people who play it.

Where we are now

  • The first full act of the story has been rewritten from the Japanese into natural English, with each character's voice.
  • Names are being matched to the official English release, so places, characters and items read the way fans of the Switch version expect.
  • Menus, battle text and the on-screen keyboard are working, and we keep fixing text that overflows its box.
  • The patcher checks its own output, shows real progress, and has a "Report a problem" button that copies the details for you.
  • It's been tested on a real New 3DS, on emulators, and on an Android handheld.

The part I'm most grateful for

Players have started to test it for real. People have sent screenshots from their own consoles, compared lines against the Switch version, filled in a shared sheet of line suggestions, and reported crashes on hardware I don't own. One tester is replaying the game on 3DS and PC side by side and sending corrections, and a lot of the wording in this release came straight from that. Several bugs, including a name-entry keyboard problem, were found and fixed because someone took the time to write them up. Thank you. You're why this keeps getting better.

Want to be part of it?

Everyone is welcome, whether you play for an hour or you want to dig into the files:

  • Testers: play it and tell us what looks wrong. A screenshot, the version shown on the title screen, and whether it's a real 3DS or an emulator is all we need.
  • Players with the Switch/PS4 version: you can check lines against the official text. That has been one of the most useful things anyone has done for us.
  • Old 3DS / 2DS owners: we have one report of crashes on an Old 3DS that we couldn't reproduce. If you have one, your testing would help a lot.
  • Translators and editors: reading dialogue for tone and fixing awkward literal translations is a big help.
  • Tinkerers: if you like file formats, fonts or layouts, there's plenty to do, and this isn't the last project of its kind. We'd love help on others after this one.

How it's made, plainly: the translation and the patching tools were built with the help of AI (Anthropic's Claude) working with me, and I test the results myself. It will have awkward or wrong lines, which is exactly why human readers matter so much. The file-format tooling is based on dqxi-format-tools by Kenzie-1377 (MIT). The patch contains none of the game's data; you need your own copy of the Japanese game.

Release notes, the bug tracker and the link to our community chat are all on the project page: https://github.com/Exhilo62/DQXI-3DS-English-Patch

Thank you again to everyone who has played, tested or even just sent a kind word. Come help us finish it.

General Dragon Quest XI S vs. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined — Which would you recommend to a newcomer to the series?

Hey everyone!

I'm looking to get into the Dragon Quest series for the first time, and I'm currently deciding between Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, both on Nintendo Switch 2.

For someone completely new to Dragon Quest, which would you recommend starting with, and why?

I've already played the demo of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined and liked it, which is why I'm considering buying it. However, I've also heard great things about XI S, so I'm wondering if that would be a better starting point.

I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have played both. Which has the better story, character development, combat, and overall experience?

Thanks in advance!

Dragon Quest VII So are you telling me that this ABSOLUTE DIVA, after travelling through time, kafrizzling and kacrackling and kaswooshing and kabooming the Demon King, and saving the world only gets a ONE-TIME fishing expedition???

Justice for Maribel Mayde, the Peerless. Pollock needs to learn to recognize divine perfection, seriously.

Also, after finishing DQ7R (JP VA), I can say that my favorite Maribel moment is when she can't be fucked with Aishe's Roamer bodyguards and just wanted to beat their asses.

Dragon Quest III DQ3 hd remake Advice on Priest/Warrior

Hey guys needed some advice. So I got to level 20 for my priest gadabout and martial artist. I got excited to change classes so I changed my gadabout to sage, priest and martial artist to warrior since my martial artist kept dying so much figured I could use more defense.

Well not thinking ahead I didn’t learn all the spells for priest because some of the guides are off and I didn’t learn kazing yet and I am sure I am missing a bunch more My warrior priest is 20 now so I was wondering should I keep leveling the warrior to 30-40 or just go ahead and switch back to priest now to learn all the spells before my final change back to warrior? What’s the best way to go about this… should I chang my warrior to martial artist again as well or just finish off as warrior.

Thank you for your advice and input. Tbh is game is definitely a masterpiece

General [HEAVY SPOILERS FOR POTENTIALLY ANY GAME] Story-relevant enemies Spoiler

Mainly a shower thought more than anything, but I thought it was kinda interesting:

Is Atlas the only example of a boss who is technically story-relevant in two separate games? I'm mainly talking about mainline series, but spin-off examples like DQM3 would be interesting to note.

To explain what I mean, Atlas first appears in DQ2. He gets more story relevance in the remake, like the rest of Hargon's minions, but his role in the original version is still story-relevant. Anyway, he THEN reappears in DQ9, this time essentially confirmed as a fractured piece of Zenus (not confirmed what part he represents á la Fowleye, Nemean and Excalipurr, possibly the torso or just his fury generally). Of course, I'm not suggesting that DQ2's Atlas is the same Atlas as DQ9's, but I did think it was interesting since, besides him, I can't think of anyone who meets that criteria.

There are examples that spring to mind, but I don't fully count them:

- Robbin' 'ood in the Erdrick trilogy (games that are explicitly connected and his reappearances throughout are expanded upon in the remakes).

- Xenlon (I hesitate to consider him story-relevant)

- Legacy Bosses (unless I'm forgetting something, these guys don't have any story relevance, though I did get a pretty funny AI hallucination from Google Overview when I asked the exact question I posed near the start of the post: it suggested that Baramos was the one who injured Corvus, leading to the events in Wormwood Creek. I mean, if that is suggested in-game, feel free to correct me, but I do not remember that at all lol).

- Estark (not aware of any story relevance that he has in 5 nor 8's remake, but maybe he is relevant).

- Green Dragon, Golem, etc. (DQ1's bosses count as story-relevant, I guess, but their reappearances as regular enemies don't as far as I can recall).

I don't imagine this is particularly interesting to anyone else, just thought it was neat. If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me. Worth noting that I haven't had the chance to try DQ10, and I haven't finished DQ6, but don't worry about spoilers or anything like that.

Dragon Quest IX DQ9 is my favourite game, so I dug through its code and made a free encyclopedia: every item, every drop rate, every grotto

Hey everyone!

DQ9 has always been my favourite game. It started as a spreadsheet of every item and how to get it, and it got completely out of hand: I ended up reading the game's code itself, and now it's a whole website.

https://dq9encyclopedia.com

What's in it:

- All 1,176 items, each with every way to get it (shops, chests, monster drops with the exact rates, alchemy, quests, sparkly spots…), simplest first

- All 307 monsters: exact drops, where they show up and how often, by day and by night

- 184 quests with solutions, and every place with the game's own maps and numbered chests

- Grottoes: decode your treasure map, all 393,216 maps sifted through, the single-monster floors for liquid metal and metal king slimes, legacy bosses

- Vocations, all 208 spells and abilities, all 26 skill lines, the best gear for each vocation

- The real battle formulas and RNG, and EXP manipulations (map method) checked against the code

- Playing today: melonDS on PC, the DQVC shop at home, local multiplayer

- English, French and Japanese, free, no ads, works on phone

A big part of this stands on years of discoveries by the community (TKG, Sylwer, Gradis, yab, The Quester's Rest Discord and many more). Everyone is credited on the site with links, and every claim was checked in the code.

It's not finished: the story walkthrough isn't detailed yet. If you spot a mistake or something missing, tell me, I'd love to hear it!

Torneko Mystery Dungeon Series Just died in Mystery Dungeon is the most heinous, unfair way I could imagine.

after literally weeks of grinding, improving my dragonsbane and and dragon shield with oomph and buff scrolls, stocking Evac scrolls, and the crown jewel, a sustaining ring, I made it to floor 27 and found the chest of cheer. I tried an evac scroll but of course it doesn’t work. Fine, we’ll go the long way.

I had to make a LOT of use out of sealing staves I found due to winky’s, but I managed to get to floor 25….where of course a monster den blocked the exit. I cleared it (though it was tough). Floor 24 was a the silvapithacus party but I got to floor 23. I walked into a room…bam, monster den, winky right at the entrance confuses me before I even get a second move. I try to walk into the corridor and course I go further in the den and die a turn later.

I am so mad. That is such a frustrating way to lose, I uninstalled the game. I lost my dragonsbane +7, dragon shield +7, only sustaining ring…I am not going to spend more weeks grinding to build back up only to have something that unfair happen again.

Of all these strong monsters, winky’s are by far the worst enemies in that game. A single one in the wrong place will ruin your entire run.

Torneko Mystery Dungeon Series Torneko: The Last Hope Toro Ruins

Does anyone know how to get to these little islands? They always have loot and a warp pad, but they're surrounded by a moat.

Am I supposed to be able to get over there somehow?

The ruins are a pretty wild leap in difficulty.
