okay so I was messing around with the console to make up some utopia in siberia and thought it'd be a fun idea to test a literal rags to riches run by demanding land from a pastorial realm as an adventurer

but for some reason instead of becoming a horde or establishing a tribe I inherited the realm as a herder LMFAO, I can't do jack but it's pretty interesting

Modding My levies unionized, so I made a mod about it (plus one where your ruler actually wants something in life)

Vanilla CK3 armies are the most loyal people in medieval history. You drag 4,000 peasants through the Alps in January, feed them nothing, pay them nothing, and they just... keep walking. Not a single complaint. Truly the finest HR department in Christendom.

So I fixed that. You're welcome. (Sorry.)

The War Council

Every war is now a campaign. When war breaks out, your marshal drags you to the map table and you pick a strategy:

  • Swift Strike: win fast for big prestige, but your men tire quickly
  • Steady Siege: slow, safe, eats a LOT of grain
  • Scorched Earth: live off the land, plunder everything, explain it to the Pope later
  • Chivalric Code: no plunder, lots of honour, very good for your piety and very bad for your gold

Your host gets Morale and Supplies. Keep them fed and happy and you get High Spirits. Ignore them and you get Weary Host, then Starving Host, then the very fun Mutiny event. Autumn sends your levies home to bring in the harvest, winter bites, spring makes everyone want to stab someone again.

Fight the same way often enough and history gives you a name. My first playtest ruler became "the Burner" within ten years, which was fair.

And yes, the AI plays by the same rules. Hover over that emperor sieging your castle and you might see Starving Host. Nothing has ever felt better.

Ambitions

Your characters finally want things. Based on their traits, a ruler gets a life ambition: become a master of a skill, build a legacy, get filthy rich, conquer, or swear a sacred vow. Fulfil it and get rewarded. Fail it and get stress. Die with it unfinished and your heir inherits the dream (and the pressure).

When you die, the court chronicler reads your whole life aloud and gives you a name. You can be remembered as the Legendary... or the Oathbreaker, if you swore a vow of chastity and then, well. We don't talk about it.

Both mods:

  • No DLC needed
  • Built for 1.20, don't overwrite vanilla files
  • Work together, and with most other mods
  • Every mechanic has a tooltip and an Encyclopedia entry, so you don't need to read this post (but you did, thank you)

These are my first mods, so feedback, bug reports and "this is broken and here's why" comments are all very welcome. Balance suggestions too.

Would you play this? Would anyone play this?

If this came to being, then this mod would have all required mods as dependencies.
It covers 12992x6336 px with about 24,200 provinces

Edit: (After some time, it has been created: https://youtu.be/ruPCF_FImVU )

I found this guy in the King of Bohemias court in the 1066 start date, genuinely was so confused at his lineup of traits and assumed that he must be an easter egg reference to somebody from some other media, so who is he and what is he from?

CK3 Does Anglo-Saxon culture deserve its own England unification decision?

I’m playing an Anglo-Saxon adventurer in 867 (and yes he's a Christian Uhtred son of Uhtred, fight me), building up to a mythical Arthur Pendragon legend so I can conquer England. It feels like I’m missing out on some cool cultural decisions: Celtic cultures can Reclaim Britannia, while Frankish cultures can Embrace English Culture.

I understand that CK3’s “English” represents the later Anglo-Norman fusion, but an independent Anglo-Saxon unification seems equally deserving of some flavor, especially given Alfred and Æthelstan’s historical roles. Should I convert to French before I invade so I can take the English Culture decision? That feels so dirty (yes, even more dirty than a Catholic Uhtred).

Am I overlooking a decision? Would a special Anglo-Saxon “unite England” decision make sense, or do people think the existing options are enough? I'm confused why there doesn't seem to be anything Anglo-Saxon specific here.

Discussion It makes little sense to me that a friend can declare war on you in CK3

I find it a little strange how CK3 handles friendships when it comes to warfare. You can have someone who's been your closest friend for twenty years, who's helped you through personal crises, and then suddenly they declare war on you lol.

I actually like the idea of friends ending up on opposite sides of a war. It could provide fun roleplaying opportunities. But I wish the game acknowledged how significant that should be on a personal level.

Like, hypotetically your friend approaching you before declaring war, asking you to surrender a contested title for the sake of your friendship. Or having to choose between pressing your claim and preserving that relationship. Depending on their traits (like Vengeful, Forgiving, etc.), characters could gain stress, lose their friendship, or even become rivals over it.

I know the game can't account for every possible situation, but given how much emphasis CK3 puts on personal relationships, it feels like a missed opportunity. Having a close friend suddenly declare war on you with no special interaction feels pretty odd. And then I guess you continue being friends...

Edit: Probably not the best title for my post, but oh well. Just in case you read the post itself. I'm aware that friends went to war with each other throughout history. I'm not suggesting the game should prevent it. In my case, my friend declared war on me, and after the war ended, we were still friends with +100 opinion of each other. I just find that weird, and like something the game should acknowledge through events, stress, or changes to the relationship.

Help Why won't my pope screw anybody

Pope Alexander was always spawning as straight and non-seducer, so I had to pivot from my original papal bull strategy of using Matilda of Tuscany to puppet Alexander to using Kaiser Heinrich and elevating an antipope.

All of that stuff worked but when it comes to the entire reason I did all of this for the dude, he'll only ROMANCE my wife. In fact, he'll only romance any woman (or man). He's bisexual; so is my wife. He is a seducer and lustful, and she is also lustful. What am I missing? I don't have any mods that change personality traits. He also hasn't declared celibacy or anything

Suggestion Kharijism should have Takfir as core tenet.

Post image
27 Upvotes

One of the main doctrines of Kharijism was the concept of Takfir, and currently there isn't any in game tenet that represents it, and it is something i was expecting to come with the religion update.

From wikipedia:
Takfiri [a] is an Arabic and Islamic term denoting a Muslim who excommunicates one of their coreligionists—i.e., who accuses another Muslim of being an apostate, or murtadd, 'one who turns back'...
...The Kharijites also asserted that faith without accompanying deeds is useless, and that anyone who commits a major sin is an unbeliever (kafir; pl. kuffar) and must repent to restore the true faith.

There is some tenets that kinda fit this idea, but none that adresses it directly. Religious Law only works against vassals, while Struggle and Submision is against non muslims. Azariqa has the tenet Warmonger, but that's a very extremist portrayal and thet tenet itself makes the rite more divergent.

In game i think this tenet should give practitioners a casus belli against sinful muslism (even against non Kharijites), instead of a proper excomunication interaction, since Kharijism doesn't have a head of faith in any start date.

Modding What is your favourite full conversion mod?

I'm curious what is generally considered the most popular mod by the playerbase. I always figured it was AGoT since I know a lot of people play the game just for that. Personally I think After the End is consistently the highest quality and most fun mod.

CK3 How the hell are you supposed to get titles in China?

I've been playing as some starter Chinese guy (not the one you're offered for the tutorial). I've upped my rank to 3, created a legend (I think I became saint if you can become one as Chinese), everyone including the Emperor respects and fears me. However I've not once gained a title higher than Count.

How the hell does that work when you're THE most respected guy in your realm, you have +200 inheritance priority, but you're 70th in the queue because you're merit rank 3 by the age of 70 and there are 69 guys with ranks 1-2 in front of you, all of them younger than you by 20+ years. Also it seems like these guys never ever die or abandon their posts so the queue for titles never shifts because there are no titles to be distributed.

I've also joined every exam, inspection (or whatever it's called in English) and governor event I could and have like +17 merit/month

FYI I've been only playing CK2 a lot, and only played CK3 for a bit on its release and only picked it up again recently
