Rant/Vent Working with a nightmare nurse

This nurse I have tonight is SO BAD I’m to the point where I’m complaining and making sure I never work with her again. She’s always had red flags and I’m typically never scheduled on her unit. But I’ve been getting bounced around lately so the past 3 or so weeks 1 day of my week will be on her unit. And I somehow always wind up on her hallway never another nurses. But she’s being so petty tonight and I’m just over it. So many red flags. Btw nurses come at 7 but CNA comes at 6 so they shift change an hour into my shift.

  1. She’s previously asked me to lie about vital signs or to not document vital signs I measure. Say someone has high BP bc they have hypertension she’ll say no don’t chart that wait til I give the medication and check again. Isn’t that HER job?
  2. The kitchen sent the dinner trays late again (this job does only room trays) AND we’re down a CNA (should be 3 but just me and 1 other) and the second 2nd CNA is threatening to leave repeatedly and this nurse thinks that’s a perfect time to ask me “So are you finished with the vitals?” Bro the tension was already so high in general you really would’ve thought it was rhetorical. We hadn’t even assigned rooms yet?!?!
  3. So look I’m like no I’m taking the front so I can work with whoever the other nurse is. WHY THE FUCK IS SHE TAKING THE FRONT?!?!?
  4. So anyways mind you I lowkey was tryna take the front anyway so I already had 3 peoples vitals done lmaooo. But then they ask who’s taking room ___ the family is here and apparently demanding he get an unscheduled shower even tho he got a bed bath on his scheduled day Friday. They don’t do Sunday showers here mind you. I have 17 patients and the other CNA has 15 mind you. But yeah sure a fucking unscheduled shower. The patient is combative, heavy, has a trach, is a massive fall risk and supposed to be a 1:1.
  5. As I’m attempting to take vitals I’m stopped to change a different person. No worries obviously. Finish that. Now the family is saying one dude needs changed immediately. Forgot to mention speaks no English. The day shift nurse explains I have to find help first. When I tell you I asked twice, waited 10 or so minutes, and then had to leave the unit just to get help??? I wanted to find the sup so I could demand to be moved but oh guess what we’re so short there isn’t one tonight LMAOOOO. The day sup tells me to go find a specific person so I go to that unit and get her and she helped thankfully. Cus wtf??? I mention all this cus a good nurse (not the day nurse who was staying over to chart, the night one) would fucking help before allowing me to waste that much time???
  6. She stops and tells me to go change a woman WITH A FOLEY CATHETER WHOSE BRIEF WAS SO WHITE AND CLEAN YOU WOULDVE THOUGHT SHE GOT CHANGED 5 MINUTES AGO. SO YOU DIDNT EVEN CHECK??? She has this problem bad too she’s constantly trying to tell you someone needs changed like you aren’t busy and didn’t plan on getting to them or something.
  7. 9:30pm I’m done with all vitals and first rounding on all 17 of my patients. I sit down to chart. And she comes and sits next to me “What happened? It’s 9:30 and you’re just finishing your vitals??” BITCH YOU WTFFF 😭😭😭😭
  8. She yelled across the room at me 3 separate times while I was charting my vitals, “Acceptable-Kale6235 you have a call light on” (that just came on the second she yells) AND ALL 3 OF THEM WERE FOR HER 😭😭😭😭😭

Like bro why do they do this? Genuinely if I had any other nurse I promise you my vitals would’ve been done by 8 at the very latest because the other nurses aren’t constantly pulling you away asking you to go do things while somehow expecting the vitals to get done at the same time too?? How am I supposed to pass out trays, pick up trays, do vitals, and change people ALL IN ONE HOUR?? IT ISNT PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE just let me work at my pace omg 😭😭😭😭 and the worst part which it was prob obvious but she isn’t gonna help you do anything!! That unscheduled shower they wanted? She isn’t gonna help with that! Which is exactly why it isn’t happening. Like tf

Manager expecting me to work EVERY holiday and eve, we aren’t understaffed

I understand that in health care it is completely normal to work holidays. But when I work Halloween (favorite holiday), thanksgiving, thanksgiving eve, Black Friday (my company expects people to work on Black Friday for some fucking reason), and new years and New Year’s Eve I feel like it’s completely exceptable for me not to work Christmas + Christmas Eve.

Normally I’d just work the damn holidays, but my siblings are flying in from around the country and have a million people to visit. One of my sisters just had a baby in NYC and I haven’t gotten a chance to meet my first niece. They only fly here once a year, and I really want to spend as much time with her as possible. I’m 19 and don’t have the money for flying there, plus college, it’s just not doable. I don’t understand why I have to work EVERY holiday, especially at 19 years old? Doesn’t make sense.

I wanna reiterate: WE ARE NOT UNDERSTAFFED. Our facility is state recognized and has a line of applicants waiting at the door. There is literally no reason for me to be working every holiday

Advice I don’t understand why my gender changes how I’m treated by fellow staff.

I’m the ONLY guy at this facility and I get it stereotype CNA are these unwavering strong men that can do it all no question. I help out every time they need me, perfect attendance, 15 mins early to help out. Everything, but the second my residents refuse my care no one want to help saying “Oh I’ve never had issues with so an so before” I’m literally being cussed at, stuff thrown at me, refused care by 20+ residents due to my gender. I voice my concerns to the charge nurses and ADON but they always say “Your a guy you can handle it”. Btw I’ve always been in the secure unit till just recently, I asked my DON why the change and she looks at me and says “I think it’s best to have a guy out here instead of in the unit.” Am i missing something? Like everyday I go home bruised I don’t complain and when I do it’s because I’m actively bleeding from a urinal, water bottle, Stanley cups, and remotes being thrown at me. I’m so fed up with this place. I love helping people I’m literally starting pre med next year and only working here for my med school record.

To recap everytime I need help, voice concerns, or just ask ANYTHING. It IMMEDIATELY turns into a gender war “You don’t understand how it is being a female dealing with this” but yet the same resident who threw a piss filled urinal is hugging them and flirting

Advice Getting a job in psych as a new CNA?

I (22M) recently graduated college with a completely different degree, but eventually realized that I feel a calling to become a nurse. I didn’t realize that this was something I was really capable of until I realized I can work in psych. I am currently in the process of getting my CNA certification, but I was wondering how feasible it would be to land a psych job affer. Of course I’m not looking to limit myself but I would really like to get my feet wet and get some first hand experience in a ward if possible. I am in nyc if that matters at all.

Delegated based on gender?

I do alot of ekgs at work, at my prior workplace a 78 bed er there really wasn't a problem because we were so busy. However, at the new er i work at (have for a year), i've had repeated odd encounters.

This all started because a nurse randomly went off one day on how males shouldn't do ekgs on young women because they sexualize them. I was like...what? Ok...I won't then? So I quit doing ekgs on women. Apparently that's not what she meant? She meant only young women? I don't really get it but whatever. However, i've brought this up to multiple staff and they mostly agreed, however my female coworkers that work under the nurses have been noticeably getting the short end of the stick so I made a hr ticket.

The meeting went horribly. My manager was talking about how to protect young women the nurse can enforce sex based delegation, but older women do not care. I said that's a cultural bias, I don't bring my pronouns to work or the fact that i'm transgender, plus i'm not attracted to women so it just seemed like alot of assumptions are being thrown around that have nothing to do with medicine and everything to do with culture. He wouldn't concede that it's inappropriate, he just kept saying "nobodies saying you're not allowed to" but when i pointed out that nurses would actively stop me or give me alot of attitude and walk away from the patient entirely if i ignored them and did it he just kept repeatedly that "you're allowed to but i'd do the same thing."

HR kept saying she was going to have a frank chat with him, but i'm honestly going to try and transfer out, i'm afraid i'm going to get fired over this. Has anyone dealt with sex based delegation? I told them i'm fine to abide by it, I just need something in writing because some of my coworkers have been complaining about me not doing my part when they get hit with a bunch of young women that trigger a cardiac workup and I don't want to be penalized for it.

Do I need a new job.

This is kind of long. So my newer job, our executive director is fairly new. She's been here since June or so and I came in August. The former director is now the wellness coordinator. Originally the Ed said we could work together at night to change people and dress people. Then the wellness director said no and went above the EDs head to get it changed. The wellness coordinator watches and listens to the security cameras all the time and calls the facility to yell at you. It makes me uncomfortable. A lot of staff has quit since this started happening . The executive director said it's OK to sit if our work is done, the wellness coordinator says no, we have to find extra work to do. It's stressing me out. Even when the ED picks up on night shift, she sits and doesn't say anything if we do. I offered to cover some nights this month (no specific nights) and the Ed got mad because I don't want to work 6 nights in a row and have 1 night off. I know she is stressed with staffing issues. The vibes are just not great with the management not agreeing on things and feeling spied on. I'm worried about moving into LTC though vs a memory home.

What my residents were served tonight

Literally just mashed potatoes and vegetables. This is for purée diet. The normal diets got a plan bratwurst no condiments or a bun and plain unseasoned mashed potatoes. The dessert is canned peaches.

I’m completely unacceptable and I’ll be reporting this because it’s just AWFUL. Half of my residents didn’t even want to eat it and left their plates untouched!

2nd night on the job and Im awful at it

Last night was my second night working as a cna for a nursing home. I was thrown into a hall by myself with 22 people 4 are somewhat able to be independent but the rest are almost completely dependent. Plus 8 i have to use the hoyer for. I feel swamped and overwhelmed. I cant keep up with the work and im not sure it will ever get better. And a resident passed away on my hall and it was the first time I ever saw a dead person. Overall I feel like an awful cna and im not sure it will ever get better

I hope I made the right decision

Hi. Im 19, still in orientation for night shift and I just. Idk. They had me do like two months of CNA classes, clinicals, as well as my residency (I passed) and then was on orientation on days for like 3 weeks for some reason even though that’s not my shift

I’m tired and I feel trapped. My mentor doesn’t even know how to orient. Her and my other coworker already threatened jump me in a haha jk way 😐and some of the residents are terrible. (Im talking like actually psychotic, as well as alert AND verbally aggressive/abusive) I’m low key afraid she’s eventually gonna hit me with her trapeze bar while I’m doing her.

And both my mentor and coworker want me to do her on my own now. And for some others , I’m not physically strong enough to even to do some of the one assists (they are heavy people)

And I feel like most of the time I haven’t even been getting taught things. They just constantly say hey can you get that bell or hey can you go grab that

Litterally go by myself for everyone so they don’t have to get up.. and I do it. I do every thing they tell me because I’m just the orient. It’s dehumanizing. It almost doesn’t even matter how good I do because eventually they’re probably gonna blame me or throw me under the bus for something and everyone will beleive them because seniority matters here.

I switched to evenings. And it’s less pay but I hope that it’s better on me. I was also terrified because my mentor said most nights, expect to be by yourself… which is 41 residents total …most of which are dependent and total care and or Bariatric.

By YOURSELF? With a nurse who may or may not have a split floor ?? I just…. I can’t see myself doing that safely or without rushing and idek how I would start to…
So I switched because the thought of being alone on that floor at night is just I can’t.

I honestly don’t even want to do this job anymore. But I can’t quit. It’s the best money I ever made in my life at any job, and it’s insane money for my age. So I need to at least stick it out until I save some more up but.

I want out as soon as possible.

How to stop feeling immense dread before every shift?

I work per diem in an acute rehab unit in the hospital. Before every shift I feel immense dread that honestly ruins my day. I would quit but I’m a full time undergrad student and I have to pay rent for my apartment. I’m also involved in a lot of other clubs and a lab. I think it’s the combination of my heavy course load, I work night shift, I have other priorities, and the fact that the job is an hour away. I know it’s only temporary but until then is there any advice on how to stop feeling this way? I’m very grateful for my position and that I’m able to make my own schedule but I hate feeling like this

Rant/Vent Coworker using walking rounds as a means of bullying.

I am new on this floor.

(All of my 10+ years of experience are in the ED and I asked to go back there, but got swindled by HR. I'm actually planning on taking it up with the union once I'm off probation; I was straight up lied to about which positions were available, I think because they needed to fill this one so badly.)

This coworker is literally a teenager (I'm not trying to be disparaging about her age, I started at 19 myself. I say that to paint a clear picture because this one is the kind of high-school-style mean girl who will laugh in your face; she stood six feet away and made fun of my weight like I couldn't hear her on my first day.)

I work on a grossly understaffed hospital unit (I had sixteen patients, ten total cares, last night, plus patients acting out behaviorally, one that became a code stroke who I had to walk to CT, routine chores like changing garbages, etc.)

I did manage to finish my shift with everybody clean and dry, and a few fully bathed.

It is paper policy on our floor to do walking rounds, although almost nobody does because every assignment is pretty much like this; we do verbal report and trust that the last person did their best. Yes, I've gotten screwed a few times, but it just meant my work was front-loaded; it's not like I wasn't going to have to clean everybody at some point anyway.

I don't care that this person wanted to walk, I care that her version of walking rounds is taking ten minutes to whisper-talk shit with the UC, then look me dead in the eye and smirk while she pats each patient's crotch (to check if they're wet). I was five minutes late punching out because she made a huge show of gathering enough supplies to bathe three patients because one said she was wet. We got back to the room, she opened her brief, and it was perfectly clean like I told her.

I'm told she is like this with everyone (staff and patients) and management doesn't care. Knowing this facility and knowing management, I believe that, but I'm not going to spend another morning like this.

I'm planning on just telling her next time that she has me until [exact clock out time] and I'm walking out of the room, no matter the task, then, but it's killing me to swallow the catty disrespect. I can't be telling people about themselves while I'm on my probationary period, though.

(I had left for a couple of years to work a 9-5; I have a whole other degree/paperwork career and had some bad injuries from an accident to coddle for a while. I'm a little more healed now, and I need the weird schedule and union benefits while I go back to school. It's just painful not to be using all of the skills and certifications [I am also an EMT and phlebotomist, but jumping off of an ambulance is pretty much the one thing I absolutely shouldn't do, and phlebotomy alone pays very little at this hospital.] I spent years gathering, while getting paid two dollars less per hour to be abused.)

Advice Starting Cna program tomorrow

Hello!

Like the title says, I’m starting my 5 week Cna program tomorrow. Any advice for class, clinical and the state exam would be greatly appreciated. :) I’m also in Ny so If you have experience taking this exam, that would be helpful!
