Biblical Character of the Month Biblical Character of the Month, October: John the Baptist

October brings us back to the New Testament! REPENT, because our character this month is John the Baptist.

The goal of this series is to create more conversation about characters from the Bible. My hope is to dive into often overlooked characters in Scripture — people who have important lessons that we don’t always remember. But we also want to make this collaborative! I don't want to just ramble my thoughts on these characters at you, I want to urge everyone to write their own post about the character of the month.

So all you need to do is make a new post with your reflection or meditation on John. We do have a special flair ("Biblical Character of the Month") you can give the post, and I will make sure to add it to our collection on this thread.

John appears in all four Gospels, though only Matthew and Mark record his death. He is sometimes called John the Baptist, John the Baptizer, or (my preference) John the Precursor. His most notable story is the Baptism of Christ, but there's a ton you can write about!

A few questions to get you started thinking about your own meditations!

  • What makes John noteworthy as a precursor to Christ?
  • Why is John so hairy and so wild?
  • How do we make sense of Jesus' Baptism? John is "not worthy", yet he Baptizes Jesus. How is that?
  • In what ways is John like Elijah? In what ways are they different?

Reflections from the community:

coming soon!

I accepted Christ into my life on 10/1/2025 and since then it has been a great time (slightly over a year 🤩✝️). PTL for all He has done for me and I cannot wait to see what the Lord does in the future!!

I Got Baptized!!!

This past Sunday, I made one of the most important decisions of my life. I was baptized at a really young age, and over the past couple of months, it’s been weighing on me that I never got to make that decision for myself. I’ve come to realize how important it is to understand the meaning and reasoning behind the decisions we make in life. Every choice we make reflects our heart, shapes our spiritual formation, and either honors God or drifts from His will. That’s why I chose to get baptized again. I wanted to make this commitment to Jesus for myself. I also did it to make my relationship with Him more personal and let Him know I’m all in!

After being saved by Jesus this past year, I’ve already seen Him change my life in so many ways, and I know He’s only getting started. I’m excited to see what He continues to do in my life and where He leads me from here.

Getting baptized is more than just a moment; it’s a public declaration of my faith in Jesus Christ and a symbol of the new life I have in Him. I know I’m not perfect, but I’m choosing to follow Jesus, trust His plan for my life, and continue growing in my relationship with Him every day. I’m so thankful for His grace, His love, and everything He has done for me. This is just the beginning of my journey, and I can’t wait to see what God has in store. 🙌

“Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)

All glory to God! 🤍

Admittedly, I’m not a Christian anymore. I’m also a Dave Ramsey hater based on the way he illegally treats his employees and his overall “boomer” mentality towards younger people, but this is just downright evil in my eyes. Using God to justify your blatant greed on your Christian program shows a lot about him and his attitude towards Christianity.

Support I’m a Christian, but I’m struggling with the fear that there’s nothing after death.

I’m a Christian, and I genuinely believe in God and Jesus. I want to have a strong relationship with God, and my faith is really important to me.

But lately, I’ve been struggling with this terrifying thought: What if when we die, there’s just nothing? What if we simply stop existing?

I don’t want to believe that. I believe in heaven and eternal life, but sometimes my mind starts questioning everything, and it scares me. I start thinking about how nobody truly knows what happens after death, and I get overwhelmed.

I also struggle with anxiety and intrusive thoughts, so sometimes it’s hard to tell whether I’m genuinely questioning my faith or whether my anxiety is making me obsess over the uncertainty.

I want to feel confident in my faith. I want to trust God without constantly having that little “what if” in the back of my mind.

Has anyone else experienced this, even while genuinely believing in God? How did you work through it?

I’d especially love to hear from Christians who have struggled with the same fear and found peace in their faith. I’m not looking for arguments or debates, just genuine advice and encouragement.

Those of you who studied Church history: how did it change your conclusions about the Christian church?

Just curious to hear what you came away with. When I studied world religions in college my perspective on the formation of Christianity changed a lot, even though I’m still Christian. I just find the history more messy than we’re usually taught (as is always the case).

Is Christianity misogynistic?

I am a feminist. I am a Christian, and I have started seeing people point out bible verses like these:

-1 Timothy 2:12 – "I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet."

-1 Corinthians 14:34–35 – Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

-Ephesians 5:22–24 – "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church..."

-Deuteronomy 28 -29- “If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.”

Honestly, I thought that feminism was something that elevated  Christianity over Judaism and Islam. I don’t think I could follow a religion in which I am treated as inferior or as an object owned by men because of something as dumb as the chromosomes I was born with.

Jesus said: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; . . . he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and . . . abides in me, and I in him” (Jn 6:51, 54, 56).

Any experiences with miracles?

• Upvotes

So, since I want encouragement for us in trusting God, I am interested if any of you or people you deem trustworthy have ever experienced either miracolous healing or something that can be potentially described as supernatural phenomenon? I have found posts like this before, but I think a post every once in a while like this is good.

Can you pray for my mom?

I was raised Catholic but I am not an active one anymore. However, my mom believes. She is in a hospital now and she might have her toe finger amputated. She is in severe distress, my alcoholic father lost his driving license bc of DUI and my mentally disabled brother is also heavily distressed. I do not feel like I can pray. I don’t want to be blasphemous. It is her God, though, so I would like someone that is of faith to pray if that is okay for me to put such request. I wish for my mom to be taken care of and recover. Thank you

Question Religious Psychosis or Conviction

I’m 28F. I grew up Pentecostal & in a very God fearing household. I wasn’t really “instilled” fear but I was taught right from wrong and the consequences of my actions. Per-se, If I had a boyfriend in secrecy that it would lead to no good & God wouldn’t use me because I’m sinning by lying to my parents & pretending to be a saint when I’m not. I was also taught to not hang around certain people because of their lifestyles etc & how light should not mix with darkness. It was normal things.

The older I got, the more I started to explore religions & understand the gospel. I baptized by my own will at 24.

Here’s the kicker: before my baptism, I did get rebellious in college. Random hookups (no sex, but a lot of PDA/third base) anyway… after my baptism, I understood how that was very wrong & not pleasing to God. I started to read my Bible more and stayed away from things God wouldn’t frown upon.

With that being said; I cut everything out of my life to the point I was miserable. No worldly friends, no dating, no more worldly music, wore more sweats and baggy shirts, I started to deeply study the Bible and I came to understand that many people play with God. They believe that they can behave and live in the world freely while still “worship” God. Meaning, they can have sex outside of the marriage, divorce, drink/smoke, porn, etc & still be in “good standing” with God. I don’t believe this is true because of how much I’ve studied the Bible. With that being said, I still fall short and sin. I sometimes watch porn and touch myself (this is my hidden sin) and I immediately get an anxiety attack after and start sobbing because I am truly sorry and I feel disgusting and terrible and I’ll stop for a few weeks just for it to happen again. My body craves connection, but my mind and heart don’t allow it. I feel a terrible conviction fall over me.

I’ve gotten such a great fear of the Lord that I have abstained from literally living and it’s hell. I see people my age date, have friends, go out, dress up, etc.. but something in my heart convicts me and tells me that it’s not pleasing to God. My family tells me it’s okay for me to date now that I’m older, but I just can’t bring myself to. I fear that I may cross a line like I did before I was 24, and that God would be pissed off at me. I tried to explain to my family and the church this but they don’t understand the big conviction I get. I even get anxiety just thinking about it. And on top of that, I have developed severe health anxiety because I’m consistently thinking God is mad at me or something of that nature. I don’t know if this is religious psychosis or what. I don’t go shoving my beliefs anyone’s throats but I do refrain myself from living life. I hate it so much because I’m not living, I feel like I am surviving and anxiety is so bad. And when I cry out to God, I wish he could just talk back but he doesn’t and It’s just a never ending cycle of self sabotage.

I'm scared

• Upvotes

i am in my adolescence, and i'm scared, they say God judges you with how good you've been but why does he hurt you, put you through all this, why does one religion determine if you are good enough, i'm not Christian and i have had people scare me into being Christian and I struggle with it, i try to be a kind person but if God judges me on if i am Christian or not what is the point of life, what is the point of going on if i won't make it to heaven, i love everyone i know and hold them close to me but what if it doesn't matter if God tells me i wasn't 'good' enough and all the people i love forget me because they were good enough but i wasn't, i don't want to suffer, i am afraid of going on if it is all for nothing in the end, i am just a kid, and now i am going to suffer for eternity because my parents didn't raise me 'right'

If any Christians are actually looking to spread a bit of love, i could really use it now, i am so scared and i don't want to live on if i'm not good enough just because of one thing, rn i'm thinking of just dying if i can't be good enough.

Tuesday, I’m Reading the Gospel of John with My Protestant Friends!

Hey everyone! Tomorrow, I’m starting a weekly livestream series where my brother, my friend, and I will read through the Gospel of John, one chapter at a time. We may have another friend joining us as well. I’m Roman Catholic, while my brother and friends are Protestant, so I think this will be a great opportunity to study Scripture together, share our perspectives, and discuss what the Gospel of John teaches us about Jesus Christ. After reading each chapter, we’ll discuss its meaning, ask questions, and explore different interpretations of Scripture. We’ll also talk about Catholicism, Protestantism, theology, and the differences between our beliefs. Of course, we won’t agree on everything, and there will probably be some debates, disagreements, and challenges to each other’s beliefs along the way. We’ll defend our interpretations, question one another, and examine what Scripture has to say about the topics we discuss. The goal is to have honest conversations about our faith, challenge each other’s understanding, and grow in our knowledge of Scripture. Whether we agree or disagree, I think it’ll make for some interesting discussions. The livestream will begin tomorrow at around 3pm CST. My YouTube channel is linked on my profile if you’re interested in watching. Whether you’re Catholic, Protestant, or simply interested in studying the Gospel of John, you’re welcome to tune in, ask questions, and join the discussion. God bless, and I hope to see some of you there!

Advice How do I love God more than my family?

• Upvotes

The question is self explanatory but I'm struggling to love God more than my family when I have never seen Him. I know he has performed miracles for us, and sacrificed his life for us which is a demonstration of his perfect love, but how do I prioritize him over my family? I can't seem to love God but rather fear him.

Support Getting married

I’m a woman in my late twenties and I really want to find my partner and settle down.

I’ve been waiting for my man for so long. My whole life I never engaged in flings or entertained ungodly men because I was waiting for the one for me now I am realising that perhaps that’s not real. I used to believe that God has someone picked out for us but I’m not so sure.

I’m on dating websites but that’s not working out. There’s no one I’m into at church.

Do I just have to find a man that ticks the boxes (Christian, secure, good person) and then force myself to feel the attraction or maybe just marry them and never feel that attraction.

Advice please

I would love to hear your experience.

Self Hell is just used as a way to scare people into Christianity

I can’t do this anymore. I’ve been patient, I’ve loved Jesus, I’ve loved God, I’ve prayed, I’ve tried my hardest but I cannot accept it anymore. I cannot accept that an all loving God sends imperfect individuals into an eternal life of torture and agony.

You’re all scared, because you’re all imperfect, that’s the only reason you belive in God, you wouldn’t follow him if you didn’t have the fear of hell and that’s a fact, you say you feel his ‘peace and love’ but where is the peace and love of just constantly pressuring yourself to be different and believe you’ve got a ticket to heaven because you’ve gone by the books. You believe in him because biologically you WANT love, peace and attention from someone in a beautiful warm place, and the concept of Hell being real; a place so terrible makes you terrified into believing.

I can’t look at my gay friends and believe they’re going to hell, I can’t look at my atheist friends or friends of other religions and believe they’re going to hell all from a book that was translated hundreds of times. I can’t believe an ‘All loving’ God would send his OWN children to a place of eternal pain. And don’t try to sugarcoat it, don’t say he’s forgiving and merciful, not everyone is sorry to a man they don’t believe in. I can’t look at my OWN FAMILY, who by the ‘rules’ would be judged into hell. I would be too.

I somehow feel shame when I say I’m christian to somebody. Because today’s society of christianity is quite frankly disgraceful. So am I going to hell for supporting the LGBTQ community?

If I am such a lovely, loyal and helping person my whole life, but I might’ve been lustful at some stages or had some pride in my life but didn’t ask for forgiveness or believe in him, I’m judged straight to hell? Then someone who did no good but judge others based on their religion and identity their whole life’s; but because they asked for forgiveness of their ‘sins’ they’re judged to Heaven? It’s stupid. It’s a harmful ideology.

My aspect on Christianity as a child was very different as I was brought up in an Open Christian household, so I thought nothing of ‘sins’ or ‘evil’. Even my siblings are bisexual. All I knew was bad people and good people. Good people go to heaven, Bad people go to hell. But being a good and bad person is WARPED in Christian beliefs. All I knew was that Jesus was loving and he loved us all, that he kept the bad away from us, like murder, grape, sa, abuse.

Ever since coming online and seeing this community for what it really is has opened my eyes, all I came on for was to find others to worship and love with, I wish I never did. It’s disgustingly judgemental. I had a stage of worrying and feeling guilty over every tiny thing I did and felt like I was walking on eggshells but now I don’t care, I’m being me, I’m living free, worshipping how I want to. The community and people are disgusting online, abusive and thinking they’re of a higher power just because they’re ‘close with god’ by ‘asking for forgiveness of their sins’ so they’re automatically guaranteed a seat in heaven above the ‘losers’ who they criticise online and in real life.

I can’t believe even a few weeks ago I saw a post on here of a guy in extreme deep heartbreaking grief just because he believed a lovely friend of his who had died had gone to hell BECAUSE HE WASNT CHRISTIAN. The man saved peoples lifes, he was described as compassionate and amazing and made a mark on peoples lifes for the good, yet everyone in the comments even said this guy WOULD be considered in hell because he refused to believe in God. If somebody at your last moments of death tried to convince you into being muslim or a jew would YOU convert immediately? And even so, the concept of a man that’s done such good and was so giving his whole life is in the flaming pits because he didn’t accept God? You’re all brainwashed. I hope this post gives some people some decency.

I’ve lost a great faith in being Christian, I’m trying to feel anything but I’ve lost most of my feelings towards it. Hell is a disgusting concept I think used to control, scare and manipulate many people into believing something they don’t believe in— a threat of ETERNAL punishment and agony for basic human biology most of the time. I’m going to be honest, I even looked into the rules of Judaism and I’ve got to say they’ve certainly got it better than this. I don’t know what comes after death now, I’m not sure what to believe at all, but my image of Jesus and God is completely hijacked and gone. I’ll always worship God and Jesus as I have for many years and I could never erase them out of the equation, but this will always be a big scar on my beliefs and opinions.

Please stop trying to scare others with the concept of hell just so you think because you’re spreading the ‘gospel’ you’re automatically GOOD. Your bible quotes are taken out of context and heavily translated by a man’s hand.
Have some consideration of others and not just yourselves, that’s what I always thought being good was but it’s been modified.

Sorry this was a long one and not meaning to attack anyone in anyway, I’m just getting my thoughts and opinions out there on how this side of Christianity has turned toxic and harmful. Love and peace to you all ✌️
