Welcome to r/Christian! We're glad you're here.

Our community is a place for Christians of all kinds to come together for respectful discussion. We are an ecumenical subreddit for anyone who identifies as a Christian. Our core value is respect and our rules reflect that value.

Please take a couple minutes to review our sub rules (linked here) before posting or commenting.

If you're new to Reddit, you should also familiarize yourself with Reddit's site-wide rules (linked here) and Reddiquette (linked here.)

Please note that Upvotes and Downvotes are intended to signal content as relevant and helpful (upvote) or irrelevant and unhelpful (downvote.) While many people misuse voting on Reddit, we ask that community participants make an effort to use them as intended. We're here for discussion and the proper use of voting encourages healthy community participation.

Helpful Tips for Respectful Discussion

Because Rule 2 (Show Charity / Be Respectful) is so important, we're including a few basic tips for respectful communication.

-Consider using “I” statements (I think, I believe, I feel) versus “You” statements (You're wrong, You shouldn't, You can't).

-Remember that some community members are new to the faith and may have comments or questions that reflect their beginner level of experience and knowledge of the faith.

-Remember that your experiences, beliefs, and practices may be very different from someone else. Try to leave room for them to share theirs, just as you want to have room for sharing your own.

-Broad negative statements about groups of people are usually uncharitable. Rather than speaking for a whole group, consider speaking about your own views or experiences. Rather than generalizing, consider being specific. For example, a negative comment that start with, “Baptists always...” is not usually going to be an accurate or a charitable statement. Instead try something like, “My experience in Baptist churches has been..." (You can substitute your own group for "Baptist" if it helps make the example more clear to you.)

For your convenience, we are also providing the following links to older posts which give more helpful information for those who'd like to learn more.

I Don’t Know How to Say Goodbye to My Grandma

• Upvotes

Hey guys, so I’m currently working on a tribute for my grandma, who passed away. She was like my mom because she was the one who raised me. Her funeral is coming up, and I’m struggling with the thought of having to read my tribute. Honestly, I don’t think I can do it.

It’s all starting to feel real, and I feel like I’m losing my mind. I’m 22, and the last time I saw her was eight years ago. I was supposed to visit her last spring break, but I got a new job and couldn’t leave the country. She got really sick, so the plan was for her to come and visit me in September, but she passed away in July, just two days after my birthday.

Faith was one of the biggest things she instilled in me, and now I’m struggling with it because I genuinely can’t wrap my head around the fact that she’s dead. Most days, I pretend she isn’t gone and that one day she’ll call me on WhatsApp, and we’ll talk for hours like we used to.

I’m literally crying as I write this. I don’t even know what I’m looking for by posting this. I just needed to let it out somewhere.

That’s all. Thank you for reading.

Word of knowledge experiences?

Has anyone of you or someone trustworthy that spoke to you, ever experienced this gift from someone? And I am talking knowledge the other person had like something specific and unexplainable that it is either a ultra-rare coincidence or supernatural?

I have been convinced of the Trinity BUT still believe the title "Almighty" is for the Father alone, am I incorrect and why?

The reason is because even within Trinitarian belief, we still believe the Son is subordinate to the Father, that he is eternally begotten generated by the father.

Also, the bible itself only seems to give this title to the Father, am I missing something?

I still believe Jesus is the Eternal God.

But the title Almighty I think is for the person of the Father only.

Advice/Help/small vent

Good evening/morning/afternoon

I’m in need of people’s perspective on a situation I have been dealing with in my local church. For context I am a 23(M) year old VP to my youth at my local church. Me and the President of my youth have tried for months to organize events for our youth but it almost seems to fall on 2 or 3 people to be responsible for it and it falls on death ears on the youth.
I tried to organize bible studies to discuss certain topics that I believe the youth should tackle in this generation but yet again its like 3 people who only reply to any questions or whatever is given in our study. I got so mad to the point I even brought it up with my pastor and it’s like not even he understands the situation too (lol). So I said, okay let me pray on this and read my bible. I legit spent almost 2 or 3 months on this and finally last week the answer fell on my lap, to just walk away.

I find it hard to do such thing since for me its been a very long time since Ive had talked to people ( for context, growing up, i was very secluded, straight to school and home. STUDY AND WORK mentality due to my father so I barely did any clubs or went out with friends. Never partied, never had sex, never did drugs, not even dating. None of that(ik hard to believe but that was my childhood)). It wasn’t until legit last 3 years I’ve made only 2 friends (not counting my older sibling who I’m close with). But is this really the right thing to do? I feel awful for leaving a role that was placed upon me (for context. I never applied or asked for this. Somebody nominated me in an election of which I wasn’t present due to being a member at the time and being at my job). I wish I can do more with the youth im involved with but man it sucks, they plan things behind the youths back, even one time my sibling and current president paid out of their own pockets the gifts for mothers day (mind you, nobody fundraised it either) and the youth females got upset and said “thats it?” Behind their backs. Not in my 12years growing up in church have i seen youth be so distant and cold. At this point I might as well go on my own since my uncle is a pastor and my family ministers and became founders for a couple churches.

I don’t think I can stay here much longer. It’s like watching a sinking ship in slow motion. Is there any salvaging this? Or do I simply walk away from my role. Does that seem like an irresponsible thing as a christian to do? Anyone can help me or give perspective either biblically or on experience it would deeply help me.
I feel very lost and frustrated. Sorry if this seems like i’m venting but I’ve tried talking to the leaders and it seems like either they don’t want to disrupt a click or make people “upset”. I’ve set my mind that once my term as VP ends that Im not being in any positions and I am slowly fading myself out of there for good. I come here asking for help. Thanks to those who read this.

Do you think Christians can sometimes be too judgmental toward others?

I’ve been thinking about how we say we’re supposed to follow Christ, yet sometimes I feel like we judge people without really knowing them or understanding what they might be going through.
For example, when we see someone involved in adult-content creation or spending money on that kind of content, it’s easy to criticize them or make assumptions about their character. But we don’t necessarily know their circumstances, what led them there, or what struggles they might be facing.
I’m not saying Christians can’t have moral convictions or disagree with someone’s choices. I’m wondering whether we sometimes become so focused on judging those choices that we forget to treat the person with compassion and dignity.
Jesus called people to repentance, but He also showed compassion to people whom others looked down on.
How do we balance holding onto our biblical convictions with showing grace to people whose choices we disagree with? How can we address sin without acting as though we’re better than the people we’re talking about?

What does it actually mean to take God’s name in vain?

What does it actually mean to take God’s name in vain?
I’ve been thinking about the third commandment in Exodus 20:7, and I’m curious about what it means in everyday life.
I often hear expressions like “OMG,” even when people just use the initials, “for the love of God,” “for Christ’s sake,” and especially “I swear to God.” The last one is probably the most common expression I hear.
I’ve wondered whether using these phrases casually counts as taking God’s name in vain, particularly when people aren’t intentionally trying to disrespect God.
Are all these expressions examples of taking God’s name in vain, or is there more to the commandment than simply saying God’s name in a certain context?
How do you understand this commandment biblically, and what are some examples of taking God’s name in vain that Christians might overlook?

How do you know if something is a "God wink," or a sign or small measure of comfort from God?

I'm just wondering about this, as there are things that have happened for me that could be, but at the same time, they're also easily explained away as coincidence or something else. I'm definitely still trying to build my relationship with God and am struggling with feeling He's with me.

CW: Sensitive Topic Am I wrong for going no contact with my father as a Christian?

My parents divorced when I was young after my dad repeatedly cheated. Afterward, he made my mom’s life miserable, including financial abuse, getting her fired from jobs, stealing her car over night so she couldnt get to work, and assaulting her partner in front of me when I was 11. He also assaulted my mom when he closed the front door on her hand and broke it when she tried to pick up my older sister, cops were involved. Despite everything, my mom always encouraged me to honor him as my father.

Growing up, he could be funny and silly toward me, so I didn’t understand the full extent of what he’d done until I was older. He always had an excuse, when he assaulted her boyfriend he said he thought he was an intruder. He never came to my school funtions and was only around if it served a purpose to hurt my mom in some way. When I turned 19 and found out the truth, I went no contact, and went to therapy. After years of no contact, I eventually reconciled with him and we started rebuilding our relationship. We never talked about the past because if we do, he always tells the story as if he was the victim.

When I married my husband, we planned two ceremonies, one with each side of the family because it was hard to keep him in the same room as my mom and.. maybe this was selfish of me but I didn't want him to ruin yet another thing for my mom, shes been through enough. My mom said she supports my decision either way (combined or seperate weddings). My dad knew about the plans and agreed it would be best theyre not in the same room. I set a date for both ceremonies and deposits were paid. My moms came first and it went without a hitch. Then it came time to do my dads 4 months later however I became seriously ill and was hospitalized multiple times a month. It was honestly a scary time for me. He told me my health mattered more, so we agreed to cancel his ceremony. I was broken up about it, I was excited to see him and my extended family on his side.

Years later, he saw pictures from my mom’s ceremony and accused me of deliberately excluding him. I showed him our old messages with confirmation, but he got angrier, cursed me out, and insulted my mom. I eventually stopped contacting him to let him cool down.

Months later called to tell him I was pregnant, he hung up on me. After I tried again, he finally picked up and I told him the news, hoping we could reconcile for the sake of the grandkids. He told me he doesnt care and that he had no use for me in his life unless I admitted I intentionally excluded him from my wedding. I reminded him we canceled because I got ill and the door was always open if he wanted to talk. He then told me to keep it closed and hung up on me.

I haven’t spoken to him since. I keep thinking about the commandment to honor your father and mother. Part of me feels guilty for not apologizing, but I genuinely don’t believe I did anything wrong. I’ve tried repeatedly to rebuild this relationship, and I feel like I’m being punished for something that never happened.

Am I sinning by not reconciling with him? Am I failing God by maintaining this distance? I’m scared that I’m not honoring my father the way I should, and I don’t know how to navigate this as a Christian.

CW: Sensitive Topic How Do i stay encourage?

For some weird feeling, i think there is a spiritual block over my life. I cannot seem to move forward in my relationships, in life and in my finances. Everything seems hard for me. I know I am not the only one struggling and the plans I may have for my life is not what God may have for me.

But Genuinely, these thoughts of giving up is getting louder, and everyday feels like a struggle to continue. I have had to be strong ever since I was a child. I have had to over come poverty, sexual assault and harassment, family abuse physically and mentally.

Now as an Adult, it feels like it is a never ending cycle. Now, I believe in GOD but it seems like things have not yet shifted for me for years. No progress, I often feel like I am talking 10 steps back every time I take one step forward.

Christian parents of teens and young adults, is their approach to dating looking different from past generations?

Just curious if the societal trends I’m hearing about Gen Z and Gen Alpha are also happening within the church.

Are your teens and young adult kids approaching dating in a different way from the norms of your generation?

Alternatively if you’re a teen or young adult, I’d like to hear your (SFW) approach to this topic.

Edit: I’m also curious if there’s a marked difference between denominations/streams of the church, so feel free to include info on that if you’re willing!

Baby Christian feeling separated from God at work

Hello Reddit,
New Christian here like the title says. I am new to faith and not spiritually strong at all. In fact, I am coming from a place where just a few weeks ago I spent a lot of my life actively hating Christianity (as you can imagine it’s been a long and confusing journey).

Right now i work as a barista and before God changed my heart it was great. I felt close with my coworkers and liked the job. Now they just are very bad influences to my walk with Christ. they laugh at christians and they tend to lie often/ make fun of people who fall into the spectrum of Godly people. Some are also into crystals and witchy stuff, spiritualism in general which is uncomfortable for me. I want to make it clear i am not judging them, and i don’t feel it would be as big of a problem if i were stronger in spirit but i feel very prone to sinning around them.

I was never into that stuff even as a nonbeliever but i did talk the way they do and I’m pretty ashamed of it. I had a lot of religious trauma and i was very convinced it was one big cult. It is still hard for me to wrap my brain around God being real and i still harbor a lot of resentment towards Christianity, so being at work makes me feel very tempted to go back to thinking it’s just religious psychosis and go back to my old ways. I feel very vulnerable being there and it’s not a positive experience.

the problem is that I make good money and need the job. I am in my mid twenties and I went back to school to study English with a minor in Education. I make 18 an hour plus tips, which makes me about 600 a week. I thought about being a preschool teacher or paraprofessional while i finish school but those jobs pay around minimum wage in my state, same with being a substitute teacher. I just really need to protect my soul right now, i feel this very deeply. I didn’t want to be a Christian and a part of me wrestles a lot with acceptance of the call of God. i really had made the conclusion Hs wasn’t there for a long time. I need to stop having people in my ear reminding me of my old ways, im sad to say it’s very tempting.

I really need to have enough money to live and finish my degree but every time i go to work lately i just feel so.. I don’t know dirty?? Is that a thing? I feel a heaviness that is hard to explain but i just can’t afford to leave. Any insight would be so appreciated!

Reducing Christianese-Look for presents

The last couple of days I’ve been calling blessings, presents, and honestly I feel like it’s Christmas Day.
Today’s present list (not exhaustive):
I saw some cute bunnies
A lady bird landed on my book
I saw some pretty wrens
My husband made me a nice coffee.
It freshens up the ‘count your blessings’ mantra and I feel so spoiled by God.

I am a 28 Woman, living in Russia. I've always thought that I don't need to seek anyone. That God will gave me the right man (or give me to that man)), but some brothers and sisters had told me that you need to do something. I'm from really small church. It's hard for me to make a connection with guys at some conferences or Christian forums. I just don't seek for it. I have some male friends, but I don't see me going out there and making friends with guys just to became more than friends one day. What do you think about it. Should I try and seek that right man (and if so, than how?) or should I wait.

P.S. I know that God didn't promise me that I will ever have a husband and that being alone is always an option

CW: Sensitive Topic past relationship

  1. Hey guys I got a question I wanna know how can I stop yearning for a relationship and even envying people especially envying their relationships even wicked people. Like I just hate this burning pain in my heart and I’m gonna be honest; it’s even making me fall into lustful desires like seeing people who don’t believe in God having relationships while I’m still waiting it just sucks yk. But it disgusts me the way I’m feeling because I know Jesus wouldn’t feel the same like I’m even missing my ex who did me wrong and stuff man. Idk what to do and rn today somehow the past just keeps coming up with my ex knowing she replaced me with another man and shes happy with someone while i have no one and that pain hurts me for what she did like idk this week is weird because that happened like 7-8 months ago that i felt at the beginning of the year but after like 5-6 months months i've been good focusing on God but that pain just came back out of nowhere and it sucks.

I need guidance. I am feeling so down

Hello everyone. I work in healthcare and have been at this job for 2 years now. This one lady is 63, im 24 for reference. She says I’m trouble and how the office is so peaceful when Im not there. Mind you, i dont bother anyone. Any chance she gets she says something that hurts my feelings. I am really trying to get closer to God. I have a baby and I already feel doomed because I am not married and I sinned badly against God. My baby daddy basically left me. So with that and no one liking me at my job its really making me down. I didn’t talk to anyone at work today or said goodbye. I felt sad and jittery all day and thats just not me. I love to laugh and talk ): I really don’t know how jesus would handle the situation because i feel hurt and im not a fake person i dont want to say goodmorning if i dont mean it but I know thats not christ like but i really dont have it in me to talk to these people but also i dont wanna quit bc i love my job and what I do and I am a single mother. I dont know if there is a scripture that talks about how to deal with people but i really need guidance ):

is the theodicy of mystery the closest realistic answer to the problem of evil?

I’ve noticed that the Free Will theodicy is used a lot when talking about the problem of evil, and while it does explain human evil, it doesn’t really address natural evil like natural evil like diseases and disasters, so that sh*t gets shut down quick. Other theodicies like soul-making theodicy, best of all possible worlds, etc. don’t really do much and get shut down as well.

CW: Sensitive Topic I'm tired of repeated sins

Hello my name is Nathaniel, I am a pastors kid and I struggle with lust and pornography. I'm tired repeating same sins over and over again, I keep repenting then once again after weeks or so I fell to pornography again. I know I've surrendered everything to God buy why do I keep failing God?

‎

‎Talking to myself "I am a hypocrite" or "How can you lead if you can't even lead yourself" The spiritual warfare in my life is real. This week, I feel so empty inside that I've come to a point where I feel like giving up on my faith that I'll just gonna accept that im going to hell.

‎

‎As a pastors kid I can say that people also look at you the same with your Parents where you have to be strong with your faith, spiritually connected to God, and etc.. But I have some repeated hidden sins that people don't know. I can fool the congregation into thinking that I'm okay spiritually, but I'm not. And God knows everything I do. It also hinders my worship where I keep repeating the same mistake in my head during worship service.. I'm tired being in a emotional high moment where when I repent to God I sob and all that just fall again.

‎

‎How do you stop sinning? I know no one is perfect that if you love God eventually you stop sinning. But do you guys carry the same sin, the same struggle as I am? I need tips pls..

‎

‎I trust in God, that my salvation is through him not through my works.

‎

‎I'm spiritually numb, Lost hope in myself. I need your prayers guys.. I did repent to God but I feel like he won't hear my prayers, I feel like my worship means nothing to him anymore. that in the day of judgment he will deny me.

Lately, I have stopped feeling closer to God, and I think I have lost the privilege of being in his presence.

So.. I feel ashamed to share this here because, yes, I fear being judged. I have never made a post on any social media asking about something this private for me (shame). But I thought it was time to ask about what I can do rather than looking it up online. I have been struggling a lot to feel closer to God. One day I want to be close; I do for some days, and then again I feel like I am a mistake to him.

My mom always tells me, "God will come back to us one day, and if you aren't ready, you will go to hell", and that scares me so much that I really get anxious. I do not wish for people to be rude to me, but I would love for you guys to be honest.

As a woman, I definitely want to be closer to God, but these days it feels so hard that I think it's useless to keep trying.

I feel like I am definitely someone who doesn't deserve anything from him because what can I offer? I can't even offer to be the Christian people I see online or around me that seem so close to him, so hard that I feel all left behind, and it also makes me so angry, but then just sad and after? I close off.

If anyone can instruct me on what to do exactly, I would really appreciate it, yes I am a sinner, and yes, I have accepted Jesus Christ as my lord and Savior. But I truly believe I am a mistake and that I no longer deserve to be heard by Him, and he doesn't wish to hear me anymore.
