Prayer Request Thread - Week of St. Luke and the Twentieth Sunday after Trinity

Also known as the Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost. Year A, Proper 24 in the Revised Common Lectionary, since modern calendars generally put more precedence on ordinary Sundays.

Important Dates this Week

Sunday, October 18: St. Luke, Evangelist (Red letter day, will take precedence of the Sunday in traditional calendars)

Collect, Epistle, and Gospel from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer

Collect For St. Luke the Evangelist: Almighty God, who calledst Luke the physician, whose praise is in the gospel, to be an evangelist and physician of the soul: May it please thee that, by the wholesome medicines of the doctrine delivered by him, all the diseases of our souls may be healed, through the merits of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect for the Twentieth Sunday after Trinity: O Almighty and most merciful God, of thy bountiful goodness keep us, we beseech thee, from all things that may hurt us, that we, being ready both in body and soul, may cheerfully accomplish those things that thou wouldest have done, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Epistle: 2 Timothy 4:5-15

Gospel: Luke 10:1-7

Vocations - process and delays

Hello@

What is the discernment process with your Diocese? I've had a sense of calling for several years. I moved to Anglican church a few years ago and a few people were noticing this and encouraged me to explore. However the vicar was not interested in discussing this at all. My spiritual director at the time encouraged me to think about moving to a church where I could settle and get involved and who'd support me on this journey.

I did this. 3 years later, I am referred by the Assistant Priest to the Vicar for discussion about vocations. We have a discussion and he says he'll get in contact with Vocations but actually he doesn't know me.

A few months later i follow this up as I've not heard anything back. We have another discussion, he has since found out about me, we discuss the calling, ministry I am calles to types of vocations and my involvement in church. He says he will get in touch with vocations team.

A few months later, still no news. I am advised to contact Vocations team directly. They get in touch with vicar. I am now advised i need to get even more involved with church and it's mission before we can discuss vocations.

I guess my question is how much more can i do when i work full time when i am already on rota for welcome, intercessory prayers, reading, deanery synod and pcc. I also wonder about the practical reality of this - I am in my 50s. I also wonder the practical impact of this as my ministry involves supporting people outside the church, sometimes outside of any church. This takes up my time and energy.

Would really appreciate your thoughts on this. And prayers.

Martyrs’ Day Anniversary

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Greetings to you in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Today we mark the first anniversary of the historic Martyrs’ Day Statement, issued by the Gafcon Primates Council when we met in Sydney, Australia, on 16 October last year.

On that day we announced that “the future has arrived,” and that “we have not left the Anglican Communion; we are the Anglican Communion.”

I give thanks to God for all that has happened in the year since.

At our G26 Conference in Abuja in March, we gave further shape to the Global Anglican Communion and established our new conciliar leadership.

Some have accused us of schism, but we reject that charge. The English Reformers did not see themselves as leaving the Church, but reforming it through a return to the Scriptures.

Today, on Martyrs’ Day, we especially remember Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley, who gave their lives for that Reformation.

Their courage reminds us that faithfulness to Jesus Christ and his Word can come at great cost.

True Christian unity can never be separated from truth. Jesus prayed that his people might be one, but also prayed, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17).

We have not chosen truth instead of unity. We seek unity in Christ and in his truth.

This is why the Abuja Affirmation calls our leaders to “principled disengagement” from Canterbury-led structures which have turned away from the clear teaching of Scripture.

The time for institutional negotiations with the Canterbury-led structures has passed. Our task now is to build for the future God has given us.

I call on faithful Anglicans around the world to join us in the Global Anglican Communion, so that together we may give visible expression to our unity in Jesus Christ and his Word.

Next week, the Global Anglican Council will meet in Kigali, Rwanda, to continue building the structures needed to support our Global Anglican Communion.

I ask you to pray for us in this important work.

Yours in Christ,

The Most Revd Dr Laurent Mbanda
Chairman of the Global Anglican Council

Conservative Anglicans in liberal dioceses

For Anglicans who maybe live in a smaller area or somewhere where they only option are more liberal/progressive churches, do you still go to that church and take Eucharist even if the episcopate ordains women and non celibate homosexuals/lesbian priests/bishops

Looking for a new church to call home.

Having passed by a Lutheran Church, I’d certainly like to visit. Learning about Reformed Protestant Churches. Have visited 2 PCA Presbyterian churches, one CRCNA (Dutch) Reformed church and an ACNA Anglican church. Lutheran would be next on my list. Having first started in an independent non-denom charismatic church and most recently a Non-Denomination/Baptistish Megachurch, looking for something more traditional/sacred. I’m also considering visiting a Reformed Baptist church. Visiting other churches convinced me to congregate elsewhere. But praying about it as well.

General Question Biblical Literalism

Having been in the evangelical church for so long, it was news to me that the historical churches didn’t actually teach biblical literalism. I have so many questions but am not sure how to even get the words right so here goes nothing:

  1. How do we know which books aren’t supposed to be taken as literal history?
  2. How does this mean we can trust the NT?
  3. OT stories are referenced in the NT, did the apostles think they were literal?
  4. Does this cause issue with Jesus’ genealogy going back to Adam?
  5. Any and all insight is highly appreciated. Thank you

Edit to add - Wow! I appreciate such kind and helpful responses! This made my day.

General Question TEC Priests in England/UK?

How common is it for TEC priests to move over to parishes/roles in the UK? Seem like plenty of CofE and Australian clergy move over to the US (including the current dean of VTS, the largest TEC seminary) but curious how the other way looks like.

I’d think less so mostly for all the other reasons most migration is this way vs the other (salaries, opportunities, even the weather etc.!) but I’m sure there are clergy who go over with their spouses etc. I know there’s a Redditor active here who went form TEC to Church in Wales, curious for other examples or stories!

(EDIT: Folks ordained in TEC who then moved over, not just North Americans who became priests in the CofE!)

33 bead Anglican rosary prayer book suggestions

I've used an Anglican rosary at times, but it's been years and even back then I only really did one prayer with it. What's the best book for an overview of the 33 bead rosary, with some general background as well as a broad range of prayers?
