finding job

ive (19f) been looking for jobs for seven months now and most of the time i don’t even hear back from the jobs i applied to, gets rejected, and would get interviewed but wouldn’t hear back after that.

i have experience in babysitting, receptionist (for like 1-2 months at my previous college), placement at hospital (6-7 months), cleaner of a food trailer.

and now i’m doing my first volunteer, it’s fun but i really need money to help my mom to pay bills and for myself too.

i just finished my pre-health level 4 and now i wanna take a gap year to save up some money for school but how can i even save money if i dont have a job 🫩

and yep i tried giving my cv in person and did not hear anything back : )

any tips and advice? PLEASE hehe

moving to chch Nearly 30 and still unsure what career path to take — looking for advice (Christchurch, NZ)

Edit I am a woman, and childfree by choice 🙂

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping to get some advice from people who might have been in a similar situation or have experience with different career paths.

I'm nearing 30, and honestly, I'm starting to feel a bit lost when it comes to figuring out what I want to do career-wise. I feel like I should have a clearer direction by now, but I don't, and with my current job being a fixed-term contract, I'm starting to think more seriously about my future.

A bit about my background: I currently work in auditing in a business role on a 6-month contract, which finishes in March next year. I'm not sure whether my contract will be extended, so I'm trying to use this time to figure out what my next move should be.

Before this, I spent around 5 years working in supervisory and quality control (QC) roles, and I've also worked for a government agency. So, I've got a reasonable amount of work experience across different areas, but I still don't feel like I've found a career I want to commit to long-term.

One of the biggest challenges is that I don't have many formal qualifications. I grew up in a pretty rough environment and had to start working young, so I left school at 15 and never got the opportunity to gain NCEA qualifications or go on to further study.

A few years ago, while working, I studied part-time and managed to complete a Level 4 Certificate in Business Administration. I'm proud of myself for getting that done, but now I'm wondering whether I should study something else that could open up better opportunities.

Ideally, I'd like to find a career that:

Pays well and has good earning potential long-term.

Offers job security and opportunities for progression.

Doesn't necessarily require a university degree.

Has qualifications I can study towards while working, rather than having to give up work completely.

Allows me to build a stable future without constantly worrying about whether I'll have a job.

**In terms of the actual work, I'm honestly pretty open to anything.** I don't have a particular industry or dream job in mind. I'm happy to consider different types of work, whether that's a trade, a technical role, a government career, IT, a specialist business role or something completely different.

The main things I'm looking for are good earning potential, stability and a career I can build on over time. Ideally, I'd prefer something that doesn't involve relocating, as I've recently moved to Christchurch and would like to stay here for the foreseeable future.

I've considered building on my existing experience in business, auditing, supervision and QC, but I'm also open to starting fresh if there's a worthwhile opportunity that doesn't require years of university study.

I guess I'm just feeling a bit behind in life and worried about spending another few years working jobs without actually building towards something more secure.

**For those of you in New Zealand, particularly Christchurch, what careers would you recommend looking into if you were in my position?**

Are there any qualifications, diplomas, apprenticeships or industries you'd recommend that offer good earning potential without needing a university degree? Are there any career paths you wish you'd known about when you were younger?

I'd especially appreciate advice from anyone who has changed careers in their late 20s or 30s, or who has managed to build a well-paying career without traditional school qualifications.

I'm not expecting to find a magic solution overnight, but I'd really appreciate any suggestions, personal experiences or advice on where to start.

Thanks in advance! 😊

Calling them carving pumpkins to try justify the price is a fucking joke. No one here carves pumpkins for Halloween and even if they did, every pumpkin is a carving pumpkin..

Good restaurants in chch with vegetarian options?

I have a good friend coming down from the north island this weekend and looking for a nice restaurant for a Friday night dinner. She is vegetarian, I am not, although I don't mind following suit if it means we go to the right place!

As a non-vegetarian person I have absolutely no clue about what/where the best options are! So hopefully this reaches people who have better ideas than I do :)

Ideally looking for somewhere close-ish to riverside.

Thank you so much in advance!

Social Date night ideas for anniversary

Hello! My partner and I are about to celebrate 5 years together and I was wondering if there was any suggestions on some good “fancy” places to go. We like to pick places that are too expensive for us normally, we’re not from Chch originally so we aren’t super knowledgeable about what’s around.

⚽ Casual 5-a-side Football in Christchurch – Beginners Welcome!
Hey everyone!
I’m looking to organise some friendly 5-a-side football games in Christchurch.
Nothing competitive, just a relaxed kickabout, some exercise, and a chance to meet new people!
⚽ All skill levels welcome, including beginners
⚽ No rough tackles or pressure
⚽ Pitch hire costs shared equally
⚽ Time and location to be decided together
I’ve already started a group and I’m looking for more people to join.
If you’re interested, leave a comment or send me a message!
Let’s get a friendly football group going in Christchurch! ⚽

Rolleston Xmas Parade Market

Was anyone a vendor here last year? What was it like? Number of people at the market? (not the number at the parade) Sales? Management of it?

Was thinking about getting a site there and responded to the online form for some of the "few remaining sites", but frankly was put off by the fact I got a response email and invoice automatically (which rather suggests they are not selling many sites). And their no refunds for any reasons in the terms and conditions rather stinks too. And after a quick search (including checking to see if it was their genuine contact - cause the speed made it seem very scamish) there are a fair few comments online that it was poorly managed.

Any other markets out there prior to Xmas than might actually be worth attending that anyone is aware of? I did the CHCH Xmas Parade one last year and its was ok, but not fantastic (I haven't even looked at it this year). And there are so many places attempting to run markets it's become pretty much impossible to ID the ones that are actually worth even looking at. And none seem to want to say how many people they actually get through.

Thanks.

Wanted: people willing to write in other people's books (annotated book club, first Monday of the month)

Post image
84 Upvotes

Kia ora r/chch. I'm starting an annotated book club and I need a few people brave enough to join.

Everyone buys a book they'd love to see annotated, new or from a secondhand shop. We pass the books around the group. Each person writes in the margins and underlines the bits that get them. Once your book has been round everyone, you get it back full of other people's thoughts. Basically a group chat, but in pen.

We'll meet on the first Monday of each month to swap books and have a yarn. The first one is Monday 2 November. I'm thinking a cafe or a pub, somewhere easy to get to. Mondays are rough, so a pub might be kinder. Open to suggestions.

Any genre is welcome, and you don't need to be a big reader. Writing in someone else's book feels a bit naughty at first.

If you're keen, comment below or flick me a DM
