META Just a reminder of our rules
Tēnā koutou,
Just a reminder of our rules, specifically our rule against solicitors.
This means no solicitation, no buying and selling. We allow limited promotion of events if there are deals like XXX free tickets up for grabs, but no reselling is permitted. If you have tickets to an event, please resell via official channels or bribe the mods.
Additionally, please note the following:
Quit asking for sex. That said, no trades involving goats, sheep, turnips, or other 'alternate' currencies.
No posts asking for drugs, where to source drugs or cleverly wording your request to avoid the filters.
Your "medicinal herb" enquiries aren't as subtle as you think.
Just ask the mods.
No sneaky sponsorship plugs, no affiliate links unless we get our cut.
No reselling of free event tickets, it’s free for a reason.
No hiring hitmen or bounty hunters, legal gray areas make us uncomfortable.
Last but not least, Don't be a dick, don't act like a dick.

Wanted: people willing to write in other people's books (annotated book club, first Monday of the month)
Kia ora r/chch. I'm starting an annotated book club and I need a few people brave enough to join.
Everyone buys a book they'd love to see annotated, new or from a secondhand shop. We pass the books around the group. Each person writes in the margins and underlines the bits that get them. Once your book has been round everyone, you get it back full of other people's thoughts. Basically a group chat, but in pen.
We'll meet on the first Monday of each month to swap books and have a yarn. The first one is Monday 2 November. I'm thinking a cafe or a pub, somewhere easy to get to. Mondays are rough, so a pub might be kinder. Open to suggestions.
Any genre is welcome, and you don't need to be a big reader. Writing in someone else's book feels a bit naughty at first.
If you're keen, comment below or flick me a DM

Plug in Solar
The inconing governments are looking at making plug in solar legal.
If your renting or own an apartment your typically limited to solar power generation. Is plug in solar something youd consider? Would you feel comfortable installing this yourself?

Social Spray tan recommendations?
Hi, I'll be real honest and admit I've definitely left it a wee bit late, but I was wondering if anyone here has any recommendations for places that do spray tans in Christchurch?
I'm Dunedin based myself, but will be up for a wedding during labour weekend and wanting to book a spray tan (to even out the farmers tan lol) for Friday this week. I have no idea where to even start, considering I don't know any of the places in Christchurch, so please help a girl out?
Thank you!!

bus schedules
is it just me or are the live tracking for buses not working anymore? even just a few weeks ago google maps would track the delays and update live, and even the occasional machines at bus stops seem to only show the predicted schedule now. i thought i missed my bus today because the machine that previously showed the bus as being a couple mins away just moved on to the next timing, when the bus was just running late. is it some kind of glitch or is it just in my head

Halloween for adults?
Anything going on for people who are too old to go to the discotheque (are the kids still into the discotheque?), but don't have children to go trick or treating with?
I just want to do something fun and spooky and I've been working so hard on my costume 👻

Hurt foot - where to now?
I’ve hurt my foot, been sore for about 2 weeks and I think it’s likely fractured. Certainly not an emergency, just really tender. I’m a little unsure where to go from here - I don’t need the hospital, and also my GP will likely refer me on to physio or xray etc. Is there anywhere else I could go directly? I was thinking maybe Riccarton Clinic?

old phone books for creative projects
Hi folks, I'm on the hunt for an old white pages phone book for a creative project, specifically blackout poetry. Since It's going to involve using it as a raw material it wont be able to be returned. Year and city aren't important. Happy to take one off your hands if you have one lying around and don't need it anymore.

Social Heads up
There's a woman in the carpark on Stanmore near the fish n chip shop approaching people and telling them she hasn't had a meal in three days, then requesting bus fare if you agree to get her food but not give cash. I'm not necessarily saying she isn't legit but she's kind of ambushing people, approaching parked cars and flaggjng pedestrians down

Bed/mattress recommendations
Has anyone bought a new bed and/or mattress recently? We are after a Super King bed and want to shortlist places to visit over Labour weekend. Not interested in ecosa etc. Definitely want to minimise partner (and dog!) disturbance, and generally like a medium firm bed. Not concerned about price.
Helping with a mental health crisis?
Hi all,
I've got a friend currently having quite a rough go of it at the moment. Previous experiences of my own under different DHBs mean I haven't engaged with and therefore don't know the quality of the services down here. If/when it comes to it, is the general consensus that it's better to call the CAT team, or just go directly to the ER? Hillmorton and it's services don't exactly have a stellar reputation, from what I've gathered.

Quantitative surveyors for hill build
Kia ora,
I’ve planning a small new build on a relatively steep Port Hills site, still in the design phase. I’m after a detailed trade-by-trade costing to sense check builder pricing.
The tricky part is earthworks, retaining and unknown rock. I’m particularly keen to find someone pragmatic who can identify and price those risks without everything defaulting to a worst-case scenario and pushing the overall estimate unnecessarily high. I’ve heard of cases with hill builds where the eventual builder pricing has come in well below the QS estimate, but I’m not sure if that’s common or just an unlucky experience.
Has anyone had a good experience with someone locally?
Particularly interested in whether their estimate lined up reasonably well with actual trade/builder pricing, and what the fee was.
Thank you!
Question: (probably) roadside robbery tactics?
Hi all, I just have a silly(?) question that's been on my mind and wanted to ask if anyone knows anything related to these kind of situation.
Yesterday I was approached by 2 strangers claiming they are lost, then asked me to 'help' them out by using/borrowing my phone to call for 'someone.' This has been the 2nd time this had happened to me in the past 3 years of living in Christchurch. Both incident happened at late evening (7-9pm), so understandably it's a thief hour lol.
My questions are:
Is this a common tactics? I lived in NZ for over a decade and never experienced this outside of CHCH.
What are the objective? To stop me and threaten for money? To runaway with my phone if I'm gullible enough to give it to them? To keep my phone a hostage and extort money from me?
Thank you in advance for any info!! Stay safe guys!!
Ps. Yes I declined to help them out, first time this happen I offered to call a 111 like they requested (different person, different incident, both within CBD area) but when I refused to hand them my phone, they told me to hung it up. So I'm 100% sure its a scam intent on both incidents at least, I just wanted to know more about it.
