META Just a reminder of our rules

Tēnā koutou,

Just a reminder of our rules, specifically our rule against solicitors.

This means no solicitation, no buying and selling. We allow limited promotion of events if there are deals like XXX free tickets up for grabs, but no reselling is permitted. If you have tickets to an event, please resell via official channels or bribe the mods.

Additionally, please note the following:

Quit asking for sex. That said, no trades involving goats, sheep, turnips, or other 'alternate' currencies.

No posts asking for drugs, where to source drugs or cleverly wording your request to avoid the filters. Your "medicinal herb" enquiries aren't as subtle as you think.
Just ask the mods.

No sneaky sponsorship plugs, no affiliate links unless we get our cut.

No reselling of free event tickets, it’s free for a reason.

No hiring hitmen or bounty hunters, legal gray areas make us uncomfortable.

Last but not least, Don't be a dick, don't act like a dick.

Social Heads up

There's a woman in the carpark on Stanmore near the fish n chip shop approaching people and telling them she hasn't had a meal in three days, then requesting bus fare if you agree to get her food but not give cash. I'm not necessarily saying she isn't legit but she's kind of ambushing people, approaching parked cars and flaggjng pedestrians down

Training partner

Hey Guys

I am a recovering addict looking for a training partner to start preparing for and enter the christchurch marathon next April together. Ideally somebody from the police/fire or defence force if possible as I look up to those in service and admire their work ethic.

I have a few months now of running experience and am approaching 1 year of complete sobriety.

Please message me if you know of somebody suitable or are interested yourself.

Cheers 😎

Question: (probably) roadside robbery tactics?

Hi all, I just have a silly(?) question that's been on my mind and wanted to ask if anyone knows anything related to these kind of situation.

Yesterday I was approached by 2 strangers claiming they are lost, then asked me to 'help' them out by using/borrowing my phone to call for 'someone.' This has been the 2nd time this had happened to me in the past 3 years of living in Christchurch. Both incident happened at late evening (7-9pm), so understandably it's a thief hour lol.

My questions are:

  1. Is this a common tactics? I lived in NZ for over a decade and never experienced this outside of CHCH.

  2. What are the objective? To stop me and threaten for money? To runaway with my phone if I'm gullible enough to give it to them? To keep my phone a hostage and extort money from me?

Thank you in advance for any info!! Stay safe guys!!

Ps. Yes I declined to help them out, first time this happen I offered to call a 111 like they requested (different person, different incident, both within CBD area) but when I refused to hand them my phone, they told me to hung it up. So I'm 100% sure its a scam intent on both incidents at least, I just wanted to know more about it.

The Christchurch City Mission

Someone spoke up about the going ons of The Christchurch City Mission. I hope this brings change. I was left a mental health dumpster fire by staff ( and I was a volunteer )
What are people’s thoughts? Experiences?
What changes need to be made? What works?
Edit: The people in the department and leadership started talking about my body which is creepy and upsetting.
Edit 2: They do good work and help so many people, but pull it together!!

Can anyone recommend a zip replacement for this swan dry. I love the jacket but it has a plastic zipper which lasted all of 5 minutes. I'd love to get it replaced with a sturdy metal one.

BestStart 20 hours free for 2 year olds

Looking at enrolling my 2 year old into a BestStart centre as the one I am looking at are currently offering 20 hours free for 2 year olds, but can anyone give me a rundown on how the 20 hours free actually works please?

They’ve said to me their 20 hour deal requires that I enrol him for a minimum of 6 hours a day and 3 days a week to maximise their funding which I am fine with but I’m wondering will it actually be free or are there additional charges?

Thanks in advance

Uber eats order cancelled

Wondering if its normal for an uber eats order to be cancelled after its been picked up? Order was picked up from the restaurant, ETA said 1 hour. No problem, its Friday night and I can wait. But after about 1 and half hours, and when the driver was 5 MINUTES AWAY... they cancelled my order... leaving me with no food and of course no apology.

Is this normal?? Uber customer service were useless as per usual and of course I got charged anyway...

Single parents of chch

Newly single mum of an infant boy due to some messed up actions on the fathers part.

What's your story? How do you handle the solo parent life? Do you connect with other single parents? If so, how?

How did you grieve the loss of the family you imagined? Do you coparent or are they completely out of the picture?

Just trying to wrap my head around this mess.

News - Local Rolleston town centre to expand, with city of 50,000 expected within a decade

Thumbnail

Summary:

Selwyn District Council has confirmed the next stage of Rolleston's town centre development, which includes two new blocks of commercial buildings in Rolleston Fields and a town square between the precinct, Te Ara Ātea and Rolleston Reserve. Construction of the buildings is expected to begin in February, with completion planned between August and December 2027, after the project was paused in 2024 due to economic conditions. The council will seek public input on the town square's design and uses next year, and its cost is likely to be considered in the long-term plan. Rolleston is expected to become a city, with a population of more than 50,000, within the next 10 years.

Some of the comments in the article kind of suggest a low-density, campus-like environment rather than a proper dense CBD. Hopefully it will be more like the three-storey commercial and office precinct in Frankton near Queenstown, rather than some of the badly thought-out local post-earthquake urban design.

Plus, it's interesting that the Selwyn Council is finally properly admitting that the population growth rate is currently at a minimum of 16,000 every 10 years.

Has anyone caught a respiratory infection around about northern ChCh?

I know I should contact a doctor, I'm going to, but that's difficult at the moment given it's the weekend. Just be useful information to know if anyone else has caught this before me, just to go by process of elimination... genuinely pretty damn concerned. Want to see if what I have isn't backyard poultry related since Ive been living with a chicken shitting and dusting up the house for well over a month. Thanks.
